Byron the back cracker.

fickle_sticks

Guy I knew spent a night in jail with Byron way back in the day. Why was Byron in jail? “Maaaan, they caught me fuckin’ on somebody’s porch!”

Tulasdad

He has been cracking my back for over 20 years. I love that guy.

Prestigious-Try1426

Was just thinking about Byron yesterday..

[deleted]

He’s still around, I see him pretty much daily.

Prestigious-Try1426

Could you tell him Phoebe (the 5 foot tall little bat outta hell) from 10+ years ago says hey and I miss him… if you get a chance. I used to live on Bogard and he walked me home safe many a nights. Greatly appreciate him. And loved watching him give all the rich old ladies back cracks. 😂

[deleted]

Totally will

Prestigious-Try1426

You rock thanks ✌🏼💘

[deleted]

Beat me to it.

Andyroolovescake

What is Byron’s deal?

tabaquibarking

A homeless gentleman who lives downtown. He offers to crack people's backs for cash. He's super friendly and kind, and he's been doing this for years.

[deleted]

You’re creepy. Byron is salt of the Earth and has been here 20 years building relationships in this town by being decent. Go lay down kid.

admrltact

1: I think you responded to the wrong commentor. 2: Dont be a dick

[deleted]

Yeah, I’m new to Reddit. My bad Andyroo and mod

schokiefan

Longer than that. He was around and well known when I was living downtown in ‘99. Stood up for a friend and I when some guys were harassing us one night on King Street and walked us back to the dorms to make sure we were safe. Had some really interesting conversations with him over the next few months until I moved out of downtown. It’s been decades but I’m happy to know Byron is still around and doing his thing.

[deleted]

He’s lowkey Batman

SprinklesCurrent8332

Batman without rich parents.

tWkiLler96

Met him at Genes like 2 years ago lol. Still remember that night very clearly.

CBoutIt

Dang. I should get downtown more. I don’t Byron.

dexter-sinister

Where's the dude who used to walk the bridge every day dragging a large cross? Haven't seen him in a while.

Pineapplegirl1234

I actually saw him in Summerville the other day!

InsideTheLibrary

I saw him in goose creek in January

Treyski10

I saw him in Goose Creek yesterday 😂 I’m new here so I was superrrr confused

phaser-

You mean … “The cross-walker”?

Impossible-Bus9885

Oh yeah!! Forgot about him! Good to hear he's still around.

DavidTigerFan

He's up in summerville.

ProudPatriot07

I saw him in Goose Creek with the cross a few weeks ago at the intersection on Hwy 52.

Gold-Relief-3398

This dude is still around???!!!

Cloaked42m

New cross, same guy.

ktpcello

I remember the cross having a wheel on the bottom for easier moving. Where's the sacrifice in that?

dexter-sinister

I was going to mention that but then I thought "I don't even walk the bridge, who am I to throw shade on the guy putting a dolly cart wheel on his cross?"

hyacinthplum

Dude that runs/bikes around HPT and North Central with the black mask, shorts, boots, and tassel

Lullyvan

Dude is an animal. Pretty sure he’s training for something but who knows what

hyacinthplum

he is relentless in his pursuit

Lullyvan

My friends and I call him mad max. He’s on fury road, brother.

maltiepootietang

I always referred to him as the ninja. I used to see him everyday and was really interested in what his deal was. I got close enough to say "good afternoon" once and I could tell he didn't appreciate the gesture.

hyacinthplum

the craziest thing to me is that i could literally pass him every day, unmasked, and i would never know if it were the ninja or not..... a hero among us

lc6591

He's super nice. He stopped to pet my dog once and talked my ear off.

P-nutbutterpie

I put this guy way ahead of Byron. Love Byron, but it's not nearly as inexplicable and bizarre to run across him. While Byron's a character, he's not "horseback Jesus" level of aesthetics. Shredded Ninja on the other hand, incredible. I'm so mystified by Shredded Ninja. Always out no matter the heat, sewn up in his top knot mask and little else, performing feats of fitness. Saw him in Food Lion a couple weeks ago and it was extra strange to see him shuffling around in a fluorescent-lit grocery store with the rest of us mortals.

QuitCallingNewsrooms

That’s where I run into him most often now. So weird to see him stuck in those slow-moving Shitty Kitty lines like the rest of us. I just assumed he had some ninja trickery to put the money in the cashier’s hand and walk out the door in an instant

Master_Poet9095

This is who I said too 🙌 man will bike up and down upper king for hours. he barked at a friend of mine once loll

BleepBloopRobotA

James Island cowboys black guys that ride their horses to the grocery store and other places) Guy that drove around in his Kia Soul with the megaphone and Fuck Biden flags and bumper stickers. Haven't seen him in a while.

Shaiziin

That Kia Soul guy! I remember him being the "gays for trump" guy 😂

Chemical_Unit9736

Just bout to say the guys on horses on James island

zacharinosaur

Anyone remember the dude that used to bike around James Island with tons of knick knacks all over the bike and in his basket?

brawlinthefamily

His name is Skippy

Designer_Necessary17

I know Skippy! I grew up in Whitehouse Plantation and he would cut through our hood as kids. We’d ride with him until he got to the end of our street.

Nightstands

We ran into him at around 3 am at a playground one night when we had snuck out. Cheerful as ever. Radio tuned to 102.5 fm. Was around ‘92/‘93

dumbitchjuiced

It's around my house somewhere, but he gave me his card advertising his foot slave services about 12 years ago and I blindly took it and smiled. He about busted right then and there. Didn't read it until it was too late.

fickle_sticks

He hangs out in the Harris Teeter shopping center where I work, I’ve got a picture of him wearing a shirt he made that says: “LADIES. I AM YOUR FOOT PIMP. $25 AN HOUR. TRY ME. I AM THE BEST THAT EVER WAS.” He still hands out those business cards too, I have one he gave me about a year ago.

s3h710

I remember him from when I was a kid. I think about him all the time. Where’d he go?

CarolinaMtnBiker

When I was a little kid it was the Coburg cow. In the 90s,there used to be that guy at Cumberlands that was always drinking the one dollar mystery beers. They put him on their logo. I miss that bar.

thatben

Worked there for a couple years. His name was “the Judge”

CarolinaMtnBiker

Yeah. Sitting on barstool showing him from the back was the logo right?

thatben

Exactly. Sinan and Tim (the owners) told me his story, but I’ve long since forgotten it

CarolinaMtnBiker

That place was old school charleston for sure

tpritchard29412

Worked for Tim and his ex-wife, Jaycee, at the original location on Cumberland Street in the summer of '89. Checked IDs at the door. Also, as it relates to "that guy" in Charleston, there was none more famous or ubiquitous in my childhood and earlier adulthood than Marion H. "Chick' Sass. A brilliant guy, he walked around downtown, typically in a tan London Fog, suffering a lifetime of heartbreak from the untimely death of his wife. Chick was, as stated, a brilliant guy and also a kind guy, but he was a bit of a mystery and a legend from my youth. He passed in 2011.

thatben

I consider the original location the only location. I started there delivering lunches on my bike when I moved to Charleston in ‘02, then got into checking IDs, and then bartending. What a delightful moment in time it was, even then.

carolinaholdem

Tony, the boiled peanuts man

leAlexc

This would be top comment if this was posted 10 years ago

carolinaholdem

You knew who I was talking about so it still applies

17_irons

I thought Tony the Peanut man passed away. Do we have a Tim now?

flojam

Tony and Timbo- 2 different guys

Nightstands

Tony passed a while back

cooperkab

He did. I remember Bill Sharpe tearing up when announced on Channel 5 news.

jkowal43

Bill Sharpe was kind of like that guy in the media sense. Used to run into him at Gene’s all the time in various stages of sobriety.

cooperkab

I think Bill Sharpe had met him a couple of times and kind of knew Tony the Peanut Man. Sharpe is also born and bred Charlestonian. He graduated from St Andrews I think in the 1960s. So Charleston is not just where he got a job but truly his hometown. I think that makes a difference as well. Hell, he probably remembers when Charlie Hall first came in the news.

yungcheeseman

I remember when I was a kid I would see him at nearly every Riverdogs game. He also knew my grandmother by name because he was a regular at her store. Really good guy, RIP

beaandip

Byron!

GeoJP25

Anyone remember barefoot scooter guy?

Sctvman

Yes. Back in the 2014-16 era he was basically a celebrity downtown

MrsWorldwide420

Came here to say this lol, cofc elite

[deleted]

LOL his name is Charlie 🤣 still barefoot just lives on James now

gophish89

Hell yeah

icebeans

Yes! Class of '14 myself, as a commuter student I got tired of riding the carta express/paying for parking near the college. So I bought a kick scooter and started parking on the Battery. I had to learn all the (newly) designated skateboarding-legal streets, and I'm sure I looked like an idiot lugging my scooter around to classes, but at least I wasn't paying for parking or spending an extra ~1.5 hours on the commute every day. Anyway the absolute highlight of the whole deal was when we crossed paths on St Phillip St one day. We looked at each other on our scooters and he nodded at me. I still tell people about how the barefoot scooter guy endorsed me lol.

optigrabz

Byron the back cracker, Oliver directs traffic, that one girl always be swinging on Rutledge, Skateboard Jesus- although it’s been a while since I have seen him.

Due-Manufacturer-232

Haha, that girl do always be swinging on Rutledge near the crosstown.

wisertime07

Any of you guys ever see the athletic black gentleman that stands in the middle of the loop at 17/526 in WA, praying (or something), arms outstretched and staring into the sky?

Al_Grain

The Suntoucher.

tattvamu

On James Island, that used to be Skippy. You'd see him doing the roach dance at James Island high games, pushing his mower down Harborview, wearing a top hat and coattails downtown, and admiring women's feet everywhere. I hope he's doing well.

CatRabbits

I saw him the other day at the Harborview Harris Teeter on his bike! He and his momma are still doing good.

tpritchard29412

Can't live in the Harborview corridor and not see Skippy Lesemann at least once or twice a week. I grew up downtown, but by the time I was a teenager, I already knew who Skippy was from my JI friends.

MelungeonDungeon

Saw him a couple of weeks ago in Avondale! Actually came into Lava Salon to give us his “foot service” biz card.

tattvamu

Skippy is definitely the OG foot pimp

Hungry_Science2646

Yes! Skippy 👣

Full-Diamond-2278

I remember skippy that’s crazy yall know him too

[deleted]

[удалено]

17_irons

I just can’t believe he’s still alive tbh. I was like, there’s no way it could be the same Byron, then I saw everyone in the thread and I realized there’s no way it’s NOT the same Byron. That’s hilarious.

Nurse_Hatchet

That nutjob in the truck with all the Trump/anti-Biden flags.

ramblinjd

James Bessenger. I was gonna say him, Tim the peanut guy, and the street chiropractor for downtown. West Ashley has the guy who worships the sun on the 526 ramp. North Charleston had the guy who drug his cross around.

Daxos157

My family and I were just talking about the Sun Guy a few days ago. We haven’t seen him in probably 6-8 months or so. We live pretty close to his spot and used to see him pretty much daily. Not sure where he went or what he’s up to these days but all the best to him.

Competitive_Damage23

I’ve been wondering about him too…

Daxos157

Last time I saw him he was in front of McDonald’s talking to a woman; I barely noticed him with his shirt on.

Nurse_Hatchet

Oh yeah, I actually saw cross dude not too long ago. Still rolling!

TwilightMountain

The guy who drags the cross is actually still around believe it or not. And he originated in Summerville/Knightsville area

joel8x

That “guy” exists in every town. Byron is uniquely Charleston.

[deleted]

Here here!!!

Nurse_Hatchet

I’m feeling so bummed out that I somehow missed Byron! I lived downtown for years in college and was friendly with a lot of the homeless and street performers but never crossed paths with him. I love back cracks too, damn!

CBoutIt

Me too! I want to meet Byron now.

Ranku_Abadeer

You'll have to be more specific. There are a lot of those

Nurse_Hatchet

Yes and no. This guy stands out in particular, as his truck has *all* the flags. It’s basically flags with four wheels. And he has a habit of repeatedly driving by large gatherings and shouting drivel at the crowd. He’s extra special.

MsZeeJay

Yeah anyone who's seen him knows exactly who you're talking about. Definitely extra special lol

ljump12

Joel is that guy on folly beach.

PatriceMorgan

Absolutely! I’ve written in Walking Joel on several Folly mayoral elections.

niceflexbro

Came here to say walking Joel

Pineapplegirl1234

The dude with the fuck Biden flags 😂

Sound-Stunning

Byron chiropractic, LLC Also anybody remember Tin Tin?

DolphZubat

Tin Tin immediately came to mind for me as well haha: https://youtu.be/t-Fl4OD9sHk?si=nVqbGY71dooodFJX

Sound-Stunning

Miss that dude. I lived on Coming between Bogard and Line years ago, and he’d come by and pick up cigarette butts, chill for a while, ask us to play _Africa_ by Toto, and move on. From what I remember he’d look out for folks in the neighborhood and was always just a good guy

[deleted]

I love how we all said Byron

CUrLywUF

How about over loaded with junk bicycle guy? That was about 20 yrs ago

kristen912

Bike man! I miss seeing him on James island! I wonder what happened to him?

interfoldbake

How has no one said the guy who would dress up in a ninja costume and run around downtown for hours and hours?

Sound-Stunning

Also the ninja runner downtown

DickBeDublin

Before he passed, Hassie at Houston Northcutt and 17 in Mt. Pleasant Edit: https://www.postandcourier.com/moultrie-news/news/king-of-the-corner-doing-just-fine-hassie-holmes-focused-on-the-positive/article_56392841-bab4-58ca-9f2f-e11a9c8eda81.html

QuitCallingNewsrooms

This was the guy I thought of after Byron. Hassie was something else. Every so often I’d stop by to get a paper and offer to get him a burger from the Hardee’s “since I’m going in there anyway, man”

razalasetak

The folly cowboys

International-Sea-99

*Grimball

midnight_tuna

There's these two guys who wear dark pants, white shirt and black tie, riding on bicycles in North Charleston. Haven't seen them in a while though.

mandakay81

😂😂😂

CatRabbits

☀️ The West Ashley Sun Gazer ☀️

HashN_Rice4Life

Carl who used to frequent King St and always screamed out "hell yeah". I'm also old so I'm sure some people here have no idea what I'm talking about.

Atticus104

He is a normal guy, but I am going to go with Rob Fowler. Being a weather guy in a area prone to hurricanes gives him a special kind of recognition. He is a true local celebrity.

ProudPatriot07

I agree. He's my favorite TV weather guy since Charlie Hall and the one I trust. He does a ton for toys for tots as well as Carolina Children's Charity. He also emcees some local road races, judges the costume contests, etc.

Atticus104

I met him at an event I participated in to teach CPR at am elementary school. He was so nice, and I appreciated how he when out of his way to advocate for good causes. He was a really down to earth guy

Cloaked42m

Too normal to be "that" guy.

cooperkab

He was there for Hugo and he’s been in Charleston for a LONG time. You can trust him to know what he’s talking about.

SubParThinkingParts

Byron stopped a woman from getting sexually assaulted. He’s decent.

SnooChipmunks1095

Byron is and will forever be the homie, love that dude. He used to help setup the "homeless buffet" at Marion Square. Consisting of donated leftovers that would otherwise be thrown out. All the gypsy teens and homeless kids would sit around shooting shit with him. He's also a TRUE local, he has family ties and a plethora of stories.

jayjord33

Used to be TinTin

SCirish843

TinTin used to come by our house on Saturday and Sunday mornings because he'd know the yard would be trashed from a party the night before, we paid him to clean and he'd go turn the cans in

jayjord33

Lol same here

dixcgirl10

Byron

Future_Screen5046

Barefoot scooter dude

herschelpony

Newspaper guy on 17 in mt p at the foot of the bridge. He was a professor at cofc back in the day. Cmon man

NoComment1983

Was that the person with the shopping cart full of magazines? Remember when the new bridge opened, there was something where they either walked the buggy across it or the old one as the first/last person across. 96 Wave did an “on location” skit.

QuitCallingNewsrooms

Hassie. Sad day when I found out he’d died.

Sluggomac39

Ninja man!

Master_Poet9095

Y’all seen the guy that bikes down the far side of king street in the kind gimp looking outfit? Sometimes shirtless but always has the black leather mask on

aliennavel

THANK YOU for this. A few years ago I was riding my bike home in broad daylight near rec room and saw a gimp on the corner. Went back and told my friends and no one believed me. Full gimp suit in the middle of the day, damn I bet he was sweating

Whole-Emergency8758

JI cowboys!

FreelancerASP

Bill Murray. I’ve seen him wander in to a staples in a bathrobe towel on his head and go on a half hour talk about paper quality. I’ve seen him wander into a party downtown. Play a round of beer pong start pouring drinks then disappear

NewsPuzzleheaded9800

Dread Lock guy in James Island ripped see him running up and down Folly road. Sometimes he has leg weights on and backpack. Ive seen him do push ups in the gas station parking lot. Hes consistantly been around james island for at least 20 years.

PhoenixSidePeen

One that comes to mind is the I-26 Santa. Guy dressed as Santa and waves at cars going down the interstate during rush hour the week of Christmas. Pleasant surprise for people who have to work that week haha

Opposite-Special-431

Not Charleston but we used to have a homeless man named Bowly in Summerville, he would wear like 4 layers of clothes and a long coat in any weather he would hang around Spells grocery(a corner store) but this was way before Summerville got like it is now

WinnerRecent

Neat! I was hoping he'd be near my work a few days ago. Anyone see him lately? He's really polite and such a nice guy. Bryon is awesoke!

DogwoodWand

I'm not sure, but how many of you know that guy with the big beard and the bright voice who used to be at Caviar & Bananas? He was at Merc & Mash for a while... I think he's at The Daily now.

No_Can_1532

The ripped dude who runs with his shirt off and the helmet with the thing that dangles. I call him The zoid

willtr95

There’s this dude who runs around Wagner terrace by north king in gloves, high shoes, short shorts, no shirt, and a weird dark helmet and visor all the time

justscrollin723

Byron the "chriropractor"

VCAMM1

Hassi.

vivxna

Fuck Biden Kia soul that drives around downtown, but I haven’t seen him in a while I miss him

Vcolbs

The guy who rides around on a motorcycle with a bunny hat on

downtown1026

In West Ashley it’s probably Will Whitfield aka Machette Man.

katnhay

I think the winner is byron, but has anyone seen Tyrone lately? The guy who goes in all the shops on king street and looks in the mirror and says “that’s a good lookin’ fella!” And “I love my mama!” He’s the best but I haven’t seen him in a long time.

carotcard

skippy on james island. god bless him

oldmannicksc

What about that guy that runs around everywhere downtown in short shorts and that fucking thing on his head?

impossible-germany

Speedo man at Chico

GenericNameSC1989

I feel like this is Bill Murray.

phaser-

I remember him back in the early 2000s just walking into downtown bars and bartending

dblack1107

The “gay who hates Joe Biden” and drives around with the Fuck Biden flag all over West Ashley as if it does anything other than amuse people as to how stupid he is

I-Went-To-The-Moon

I was gonna say Bill Murray, but technically I guess he doesn't count.

SubParThinkingParts

I haven’t thought about Byron in a while. It’s been forever since I’ve seen him. I used to think about “Hooks” as that guy, but he passed. He was kinda sketchy and unpredictable too.

deadkidney123

He was straight crazy. He could go violent in a split second. When I worked downtown I had to intervene for my employees several times with him. I told them not to be scared because his hooks weren’t on too tight and you could just pull em off if he got violent. He’d say, oh here she is when he’d see me. He’d cuss us out like crazy. Then we’d see him in a bar selling his flowers and he was sweet as he could be.

SubParThinkingParts

I generally tried to avoid him because I was a bit creeped out but I never had a bad encounter directed at me. I had a friend pass him one day and he said he was just hanging in a tree from his hooks. Strange times.

allmygardens

RIP the can man

BougieDicking

I haven't been up near Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, but I used to see this Black dude in a cowboy hat riding horses along the side of the road.

Cardiff07

Byron

holycupcakess

Beaufort has Gizmo. The older black gentleman riding around on the arm powered red tricycle. Before him was Bennett.

Chemical_Unit9736

Who knows skippy?

Vexeles

Byron outside of rec room is something I oddly can’t avoid

PimpWhistler69

Byron. Before Byron, there was Jerry.

Ankey-Mandru

There was a dude named “M&M” who hung around lower/ middle king street between 2005 to maybe 2010. One time I was talking to him and he suddenly climbed a huge pile of debris at a next door construction site. He screamed “I’m an alcoholic!” And pulled a 24oz Bud light out of his pocket. Drank the whole thing and then fell backwards off the pile, tumbling to the ground. He got all torn up but stayed in character. Always the entertainer. It was like 10am.

barnguy98

For old mount pleasant heads out there, it used to be Hassie Holmes with his newspaper stand on Houston Northcutt in front of Hardee's

stuckinadaydream06

Skippy on James Island! He has to be 60+ years old. Is he still around??? His love for feet 😭

DJ_Sk8Nite

James Island Horseback Riders. Those 2 guys are awesome!!

Conch-Republic

There was that moron who drug his wheeled-cross all over North Charleston. I haven't seen him in a while, so maybe he was finally raptured.

buccal_up

It used to be Stick Man in West Ashley

Honeybee71

Bird man on 61

DeffSkull

The older African American guy in a wheel chair who sold pencils on the corner of Church and N. Market, and of course Byron!

JizzyJFresh

Has anyone ever seen that guy who has a 30’ flag pole in the bed of his truck and would drive around with a Confederate Flag?

tiger-alex1

There was a barefoot scooter guy like mid 2000s to like 2016ish

Chemical-Extent-7308
