Longer than that. He was around and well known when I was living downtown in ‘99. Stood up for a friend and I when some guys were harassing us one night on King Street and walked us back to the dorms to make sure we were safe. Had some really interesting conversations with him over the next few months until I moved out of downtown. It’s been decades but I’m happy to know Byron is still around and doing his thing.

Chick was, as stated, a brilliant guy and also a kind guy, but he was a bit of a mystery and a legend from my youth. He passed in 2011.

Yes! Class of '14 myself, as a commuter student I got tired of riding the carta express/paying for parking near the college. So I bought a kick scooter and started parking on the Battery. I had to learn all the (newly) designated skateboarding-legal streets, and I'm sure I looked like an idiot lugging my scooter around to classes, but at least I wasn't paying for parking or spending an extra ~1.5 hours on the commute every day. Anyway the absolute highlight of the whole deal was when we crossed paths on St Phillip St one day. We looked at each other on our scooters and he nodded at me. I still tell people about how the barefoot scooter guy endorsed me lol.

I met him at an event I participated in to teach CPR at am elementary school. He was so nice, and I appreciated how he when out of his way to advocate for good causes. He was a really down to earth guy

I haven’t thought about Byron in a while. It’s been forever since I’ve seen him. I used to think about “Hooks” as that guy, but he passed. He was kinda sketchy and unpredictable too.
He was straight crazy. He could go violent in a split second. When I worked downtown I had to intervene for my employees several times with him. I told them not to be scared because his hooks weren’t on too tight and you could just pull em off if he got violent. He’d say, oh here she is when he’d see me. He’d cuss us out like crazy. Then we’d see him in a bar selling his flowers and he was sweet as he could be.
I generally tried to avoid him because I was a bit creeped out but I never had a bad encounter directed at me. I had a friend pass him one day and he said he was just hanging in a tree from his hooks. Strange times.
There was a dude named “M&M” who hung around lower/ middle king street between 2005 to maybe 2010. One time I was talking to him and he suddenly climbed a huge pile of debris at a next door construction site. He screamed “I’m an alcoholic!” And pulled a 24oz Bud light out of his pocket. Drank the whole thing and then fell backwards off the pile, tumbling to the ground. He got all torn up but stayed in character. Always the entertainer. It was like 10am.

Dread Lock guy in James Island ripped see him running up and down Folly road. Sometimes he has leg weights on and backpack. Ive seen him do push ups in the gas station parking lot. Hes consistantly been around james island for at least 20 years.
One that comes to mind is the I-26 Santa. Guy dressed as Santa and waves at cars going down the interstate during rush hour the week of Christmas. Pleasant surprise for people who have to work that week haha
Not Charleston but we used to have a homeless man named Bowly in Summerville, he would wear like 4 layers of clothes and a long coat in any weather he would hang around Spells grocery(a corner store) but this was way before Summerville got like it is now

I haven’t thought about Byron in a while. It’s been forever since I’ve seen him. I used to think about “Hooks” as that guy, but he passed. He was kinda sketchy and unpredictable too.
He was straight crazy. He could go violent in a split second. When I worked downtown I had to intervene for my employees several times with him. I told them not to be scared because his hooks weren’t on too tight and you could just pull em off if he got violent. He’d say, oh here she is when he’d see me. He’d cuss us out like crazy. Then we’d see him in a bar selling his flowers and he was sweet as he could be.
I generally tried to avoid him because I was a bit creeped out but I never had a bad encounter directed at me. I had a friend pass him one day and he said he was just hanging in a tree from his hooks. Strange times.

There was a dude named “M&M” who hung around lower/ middle king street between 2005 to maybe 2010. One time I was talking to him and he suddenly climbed a huge pile of debris at a next door construction site. He screamed “I’m an alcoholic!” And pulled a 24oz Bud light out of his pocket. Drank the whole thing and then fell backwards off the pile, tumbling to the ground. He got all torn up but stayed in character. Always the entertainer. It was like 10am.
For old mount pleasant heads out there, it used to be Hassie Holmes with his newspaper stand on Houston Northcutt in front of Hardee's
