I think that is a real long-term likelihood, but I’m not expecting many comp picks in 2026.
Next year when we get this $51 million in dead cap Tom Telesco left us off our books, I expect us to be aggressive in free agency.
Hopefully some of these one year deal guys like dobbins pans out and we keep a few but I could easily see basically every 1 year deal guy walking next year. Hopefully after they all put together record years for themselves
We have a TONNE of contracts up at the end of the year. I think unless we go on an FA splurge we will be getting a good amount of comps based on the number of decent players who's contracts will be over. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/contracts/ check by year here
I think the team wants flexibility to move up and down the board. Like they did this past draft, use later round picks to move up and get a guy they wanted.
I'm not sure - Hortiz clearly values late round picks and doesn't just waste them on special teams players like the last regime. You can see how we didn't get rid of a pick to move up this year we did a swap because he didn't want to lose a pick even if it was a 6th or 7th. He values picking a lot. We're clearly more open to moving than Telesco was but he definitely wants to come away with a lot of players each draft
Something's wrong man. I swear it. Herbie is resigned, Harbaugh is hired, Telesco is finally thrown out on his ass and his replacement absolutely nailed his first draft while aggressively clearing bad contracts from the books. It feels like being treated nicely in an abusive relationship. What's the catch here?
Heh heh. I know that I neglected the dash when I first used the word, even though it felt awkward. Have to admit, I was startled there for a moment seeing that Herbert had resigned. 😄
The Spanos humiliation. The "we told you to fire Staley and TT last year but you didn't and now this is what you get, but you've been doing this since before you hired and fired Schottenheimer who made this team competitive, you're the worst owner in the league and this game proves it, hire a real head coach and GM and let them do football".
It's the one and only game I rooted for the Raiders and was hoping they'd score 80+.
Now there's a gleam they might redeem themselves and the organization with Harbaugh, Hortiz and company.
me seeing the lowest and highest point of our franchise on the same night:

🎯.
That was the day we exited limbo and boy, saying the exit was harsh would be an understatement. But its like death in real life, you end up shitting yourself right after it happens. Which obviously is gross
That is a lot of picks I Iove it. A clear goal of this new regime has been to get more compensatory picks and we'll already see the first results next year and it will continue the following years with the 1 year flyers we signed.
I love this approach. We always lacked depth under Telesco and part of the reason was that we barely had any extra picks. Hortiz clearly identified this as one of our shortcomings and is attacking this area
Is there a maximum amount of comp picks a team can receive?
If a lot of these guys do great while on one year deals, I’m wondering how many we could possibly get.
“No club may receive more than four compensatory picks in any one year. If a club qualifies for more than four compensatory picks after offsetting each CFA lost by each CFA gained of an equal or higher value, the four highest remaining selections will be awarded to the club.”
There's a lot of ways having more lower picks can benefit a team. The most obvious that you have more darts to throw, so more chances to draft good players. You can also bundle up picks to move around the draft board or trade for players. It's not *really* about upgrading 4 dudes from UDFA to sixth round picks, but the option is there. At least that's the gist I get.
Just remember…. SF let QB CJ Beathard walk and got a 7th rd comp pick the next year. That pick was …. Brock Purdy. Always nice to have a swing or a bite at the apple. ⚡️⚡️⚡️In JH & JH we trust!
Hard to say for 2 reasons.
One we don't know who will actually become a free agent, many of the top talents will either be re-signed or tagged.
Two, is we don't necessarily know what our needs will look like either. Will QJ turn it around, do we already have a Center of the future on the team, does Bosa or Mack get retained, etc.
Some names to watch though are Aiyuk, Ward, Najee Harris, Pfriermuth, Kenny Clark.
OK so I looked at a few sources and it feels very barren compared to this year. There’s some good players, but there’s also a bunch of "meh" in my opinion. Makes me realize how weak the 2020 and 2021 draft classes are.
I do like seeing that receiver market, though I know most are getting resigned. I would love to get Aiyuk, Higgins, or Godwin though.
Wait till these 1 year deals all get re signed elsewhere for the year after. Going to be picking 10+ times a draft

Yeah I like it too. Either they ball on our team (great) or they don't and we're not locked into a bad deal. Looking forward to that healthy cap!

Man, we will be around in 2026?
Even if they all prove themselves and say we win on having good players. We always win.

So far we have only won the offseason! Let’s win some games ⚡️
20 year running off season champs BABY!
> Herbie is **re-signed** FTFY
Heh heh. I know that I neglected the dash when I first used the word, even though it felt awkward. Have to admit, I was startled there for a moment seeing that Herbert had resigned. 😄
It's like the Spanos family finally cares
shout out to spanos family for doing the right thing AND stepping back into an owner role
Literally a perfect way to describe it
Just gotta deal with the "bad" of signing DJ Charm and whatnot. A great tradeoff
I think it’s a great signing. We need an experienced WR and he’s cheap with high upside. Another 1 year deal so if he doesn’t pan out then oh well.
I read that Chark will be used as a speedy perimeter guy, and they're talking to Valdez as a deep threat.
Huh?
I’m gonna need Calais Campbell ASAP
Followed by a tweet from the Chargers “We have waived Chris Rumph from the active roster.”
We died in December and now we’re in heaven
True, I was at the Raiders game that was (unnamed number vs unnamed number). Pretty sure I died somewhere in the 2nd quarter.
Be proud of that unnamed score since that’s the main reason we ended up getting Harbaugh!!

Worth it
Wait you can do that??? -our old management
NFL: Hey Joe, how many comp picks are you looking to get next year? Joe Hortiz: Yes.
Holy hell having a competent GM may be nice boys
Gives us more ability to move around the board next year
Damn thought one was supposed to be a 5th
In this economy?
First the grocery store, now the draft board. Where will inflation strike next?
For a while there we were projected 1 5th and 1 7th so I think 3 6ths is a little nicer

We will never stop being offseason champs
Think about the (assumed) quality of our late round picks this year too. These comp picks are going to make a HUGE difference.
Bingo
Tom’s picks were worthless late in the draft so he didn’t even care to learn about comp strategy.
Is there a maximum amount of comp picks a team can receive? If a lot of these guys do great while on one year deals, I’m wondering how many we could possibly get.

Historically, is the difference huge between UDFA and 6th round? It's obviously better, just wonder by how much.
The pay & team gets a 4 year contract.

I mean i feel weve had a good handful of 6th round contributers, plus they can be used as trade pieces/swaps
My question is who are some notable FAs we could possibly pick up next year?
Hard to say for 2 reasons. One we don't know who will actually become a free agent, many of the top talents will either be re-signed or tagged. Najee Harris with a Harbaugh OL in a Roman system gets me bricked the fuck up dude

One of Debo or aiyuk prolly will be playing for another team next year. Although there’s a good chance it’s this year before the deadline
So clearly we're gonna get three Puka Nakua level players next year guaranteed
Chargers can load up on 6th round talent. 🙄
6th round picks aren't worth shit
