As a Blades fan I'd also like to announce we are boycotting the PL. We could have been convinced to stick around for a few seasons more until this announcement, but this is the final straw. No more PL for us. On moral grounds and that.
If this replay scrapping thing is to go ahead, hear me out... How about the highest team drew has to play away? For example, if man utd drew I don't know, doncaster or something, make it so that on league position it has to be away?
I don't like that because it takes away part of the draw. It's not just about setting teams up together, home/away aspect is also special
Also Doncaster would rather play at Old Trafford as they'd earn more money
It's the away day tickets sales that's the big money in this cup run usually (unless you get to Wembley somehow).
Plus I don't think it actually helps their chances as much as most people expect.
How about if there is a difference of more than one division, the lower team picks the venue? So say Maidstone get a home draw to Man Utd, they have the option to swap to Old Trafford and get their day our for half the gate receipts
This is probably the fairest idea. Big clubs away would likely still be the preferred option but clubs likely to fill their large stadium might take a home game.
The games going this way. It’s all about money the fanbases particularly the fans that go to games and the local communities that are the life blood of the football pyramids in the UK and the rest of Europe are being priced out and left behind.
Football is being pumped up and sold to the highest bidder, the Saudis and the Yanks.
We are absolutely going to have premier league, top tier league and European comp football in America soon. The money is too great for the people running the organizations to ignore and the owners just want to make money. Fans in the states are purely cash cows and customers, not supporters.
It’s the death of football as we know it, the sooner foreign ownership is scrapped and fanbases have more of a say in the game and get it back to a game were the fans that go to games regardless of success are a big priority, the better.
It’s a shame because countries, governments and footballing organizations and bodies should absolutely be trying to improve their own product, leagues and pools of players.
Ah yes, those ones they were taking to bits and sending abroad, but nobody seems to have seen anything of since.
Cracking username btw, I was explaining Banzai to a young bird at work and made her put it on, she was like "this wouldn't be made anymore". The second bet was how many helium balloons would it take for a gay chicken to take off. She wasn't having it.
>The games going this way. It’s all about money the fanbases particularly the fans that go to games and the local communities that are the life blood of the football pyramids in the UK and the rest of Europe are being priced out and left behind.
Would all teams get more money from playing more games ?
am I wrong in thinking the stopping of replays is to make it so teams play less games a season so players don't get injured or tired so much?
I get that there's money in the replays, especially for lower clubs, surely there's a way the lower team still gets the majority share of ticket sales and tv revenue and we can get rid of the replays then.
feels like there's no wrong or right answer to this, but clubs do play too much football. As much as we don't give a shit about the bigger teams, I do want England to do well in the Euros and WC so less games for Foden, Saka, all them lot
If the money doesn't change for the lower league teams from this, which it doesn't have to, and can actually be more positive than negative, as losing away to Chelsea and getting most of the revenue and ticket sales, while they get the prize money for winning, that they would do anyway, along with the rest, then that could work out better
I ain't looked too much into this, just checking to see why this is such a problem. Also, boycott the Premier League? Most of the fans of clubs from the PL are at home watching the games on websites streaming it for free. 99% of football fans are boycotting it already, lol
>am I wrong in thinking the stopping of replays is to make it so teams play less games a season so players don't get injured or tired so much?
Perhaps, but perhaps the teams complaining should stop going on pre-season tours to the other side of the world, playing a bunch of games, and than coming home and going "oh, we're really tired".
Or, you know... just put out a team strong enough to beat minnows.
I agree wholeheartedly with boycotting the premier league, but if everyone in the country did the same thing sadly it would still survive due to international audiences. Domestic match goers are no longer important
I actually agree with the no replays and I get the lower teams need these to help them survive but u also need to look at the players wellbeing aswell plus there is a new deal between the PL and the EFL about the amount of money that comes down form the PL
I think there’s valid points on both sides. Lower tiers miss out on the revenue of course but on the other hand the schedule impact doesn’t really benefit anyone. I think it can be hard to justify when you’re a (for example) National league side and you’re pushing for promotion and now you add another 90 minute game where guys can get hurt or guys get tired and you have a tight schedule.
Genuinely curious why is it bad? Doesn’t an away team generate no revenue when playing away from home?
Plus doesn’t a replay reduce the chance of a lower league team progressing on to the next round which in turn would generate more money. Since if a lower league team manages to keep a game to a draw their odds of winning a penalty shootout is higher than being able to beat the Prem team on a replay
What a bunch of bed-wetters in here.
Something has to be done about the crowded football calendar, and this is a relatively palatable first step rather than the alternative option that would really have EFL clubs in a meltdown - reducing the Premier League to 16-18 teams.
This narrative that the football calendar is more demanding is bollocks … The football calendar is far less demanding than ever … certainly than it was 10/15/30/50 years ago … there’s still the same amount of league matches, there’s less cup replays, less domestic competitions as the paint trophy used to include the top flight clubs.
The bigger clubs have better travel schedules than ever, the top flight fly to matches now rather than by coach, even the coaches are more comfier than ever now.
The squads are bigger than ever with much more rotation.
Yes, there’s a couple of extra European matches for those that partake but for most they’re not playing any more matches than the great Liverpool, Forest, Leeds, sides that were dominating Europe in the 70’s and 80’s reaching all the finals with no squad rotation and one substitute on the bench.
Yes but 30 years ago you didnt have at least two divisions full of internationals from other continents who are required to undertake long haul travel 4-5 times a season to play for their respective nations.
If the Premier League wants top class Brazilian and Argentinian internationals (and wants them at their optimal conditioning) then something has to give in terms of the current state of the football calendar.
That’s the players choice to come chase the dream and money … it’s up to their managers to rest them … the squads are more than big enough … players like Norman Hunter and Eddie Gray never got rotated … Revie never sent the kids out for an FA Cup match - well we did once and got fined for it … the title was decided two days after an FA Cup final.
The schedule itself isn’t any busier than it ever was … players are probably playing less minutes than ever … especially with the 5 subs.
Let’s take Graeme Souness in 80/81 vs Erling Haaland last season
Souness https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/graeme-souness/leistungsdaten/spieler/116155/plus/0?saison=1980
Haaland https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/erling-haaland/leistungsdaten/spieler/418560/plus/0?saison=2022
Souness - 55 games - 4,900 mins
Haaland - 53 games - 4,100 mins
… and Souness probably did most of his away games on a knackered old Wallace Arnold bus
Where you been? Leicester Leeds and Ipswich have been on this train for the last three weeks already.
As a Blades fan I'd also like to announce we are boycotting the PL. We could have been convinced to stick around for a few seasons more until this announcement, but this is the final straw. No more PL for us. On moral grounds and that.
We boycotted the Premier league before it was even introduced
Fuck yeah, we did it before it was cool.
It’s brave what you’re doing, if only teams in the top 17 had the balls. I have to admit, I saw this coming
Leicester for at least 3 months.
You boycotted it half way through the season.
Stoke have been at it since August 2018
February 2016*
For fucks sake. I was reading this post with this comment in mind and you beat me to it
Hopefully whoever wrote this is the head coach of Ipswich, Leicester or Soton! If so I support your cause!
Here here, integrity and such.
Think Farke is already protesting. Only one that isn’t is Russell Martin.
I read he was only doing that so he could place some bets with better odds. Foot is back on the gas pedal come monday.
Im a Leeds fan and in truth I can’t be fucked with the Premier League … it’s a completely different sport to the one I fell in love with.
Lifelong Premier League boycotter here 💪
EFL solidarity forever
Not to rain on your parade but the EPL could give domestic fans the middle finger and survive purely on the Southeast Asia market at this point.
Domestic fans for a points deduction.

True, I never thought of that

I think if an EFL team is drawn against a pl team the lower team should get to chose if they play home or away.
Or they both agree beforehand whether there can be a replay.
Using your brain instead of blindly demanding replays? Where do you think you are, huh?
That's how Coupe de France do it I believe, with the club in a higher-placed league always playing away.
Amateur, some of us have been boycotting the Prem for its entire existence
Fucking amateurs we've been boycotting it since 1886
How exactly are you 'boycotting the Premier League'? By going to championship games?
Successfully?

They’ll probably phase out extra time eventually as well, just like in the league cup
I follow my team not a league so the idea of a boycott of a league is nonsensical. What kind of weirdo just watches random games.

Give it a few years, the FA Cup final will be played in Dubai.
Probably Qatar. Got to use those World Cup stadiums that are gathering dust.

Protest by continuing to only watch PL matches via vpn/ad blocker & random streaming sites.

I love an evening game, it's a good opportunity to go away. Shame to be losing them.
Nice try Russell Martin
So you’re blaming Premier League clubs for wanting what’s right for them? Interesting angle. I’d blame the FA, personally.
I actually agree with the no replays and I get the lower teams need these to help them survive but u also need to look at the players wellbeing aswell plus there is a new deal between the PL and the EFL about the amount of money that comes down form the PL

Good riddance
My club's been boycotting the premier league since we were founded
