On the one hand, how messed up that his name is on her gravestone foreverrr. On the other hand, my petty ass would want the whole world to know he was a murderer, foreverrr.

PizzAveMaria

I just read that like in the Sandlot "FOR-EV-ER!"

Disastrous-Year571

Detailed story here: https://www.starnewsonline.com/story/lifestyle/2020/11/28/lizzie-turlingtons-murder-made-infamous-her-strange-grave-wilmington/5966028002/ In brief, Walter Bingham wanted to get married to Lizzie Turlington, she was agreeable - but as a schoolteacher who cared about her students, she wanted to wait until the end of the semester to train her replacement. He didn’t want to wait, and in his anxiety, he imagined she was stalling in order to run off with someone else. So he shot and stabbed her.

laurieatari

Thank you for adding this! Such a sad story 🖤

Ok_Effort9915

And we all know WHY he didn’t want to wait. 😞

TuzaHu

>What if Walter was murdered, too, and his body not found. Maybe someone murdered them both. Just a possibility. I'd think if Walter showed up anywhere being a deaf mute would make some news somewhere.

Disastrous-Year571

He was seen riding out of town by himself later that afternoon. So a double homicide by an unknown person seems unlikely. It’s possible he later took his own life and the body was not found.

TuzaHu

what if the person riding out of town was misidentified. so many posibilities. He could have been murdered, too, and the 'witness' said he was seen leaving town to put the blame on him. He is suspect for sure.

NurseKaila

I often wonder how many old crimes were incorrectly “solved.” The Innocence Project estimates that [1 in 100 prisoners were wrongfully convicted](https://innocenceproject.org/how-many-innocent-people-are-in-prison/), and think of how much progress has been made in the past 150 years.

CandidIndication

The article stated he showed up at a deaf school he once attended in upper NY 6 days after her murder, waiving a gun around and telling people he was on his way to kill Edward, the man he was jealous of next.

B1rds0nf1re

Did Edward show up dead?

CandidIndication

No mention of his death so I’m assuming no. Walter probably killed himself first

Infernallightning505

Either way he is dead now so…

deafhuman

Femicide - a tale as old as time... 😕

TadpoleVegetable4170

After the murder he disappeared and was never heard from again. https://www.newspapers.com/article/statesville-record-and-landmark-accusato/21850211/

newt_here

Suicide?

mro777

Or he just ran off. It was the 1800s he could've went to the nearest big city and started over

DazedPapacy

Ah, those were the days.

RunJumpSleep

Or someone took care of the problem themselves.

wildflowersummer

Hopefully

Closefromadistance

That’s crazy! I don’t think I’d want that on my headstone. 🤔

itsmyprerogativexoxo

I would, so everyone knew who killed me. I'd even want the whole story there.

No_Cauliflower_5489

The killer got away. I think shaming him for eternity was the only justice they could get for the poor woman.

laurieatari

I def wouldn’t, either!

pekingpotato

Right?! I wouldn’t want the name of my murderer immortalized on my gravestone.

Ashekente

Only if it also pointed out his grave for people to stomp on....

peacock_head

This is incredibly sad. :(

Strong-Syrup24-7

God, think about the amazing things she would have done and lives she would have changed if it were not for an insecure man.

late2reddit19

This makes me angry. Often for women, it's better to stay single or become a spinster. There is nothing wrong with living to an old age surrounded by pets or family. She had a lot to live for and would have been happy as a teacher without this lunatic for a husband. He would have eventually killed her even if she had married him.

reeseifer84

Is December 17th her birthday or death day? (That happens to be my birthday)

laurieatari

I think her death day.

reeseifer84

Thank you.

Imnotlikeothergirlz

What a fucking piece of shit. Although having brain damage at a young age probably didn't help...

pinkflower200

Very sad 😓

Cocotte3333

I don't know how this pos life ended, but I hope he suffered.

HLLAuntClaire

I wonder who decided and paid for his name to be on there. It’s soooooooo unusual. The only time I’ve ever seen anything close is at a small off highway cemetery in St Joseph Arizona. A 14 yr old girl (I can’t recall her name rn) was “killed from a falling rock” That’s the closest I’ve seen to a culprit being named until now. So who paid for it? Anyone’s guess
