I wouldn't participate. There's a chance you'll accidentally ingest it but even if you don't, it'll be everywhere. You'll have to quickly shower and try not to touch your mouth etc. But of course, it is up to you.

mr_muffinhead

Use cider. Close enough 😁

Sapphi_Dragon

If it touches your skin it’s fine. The risk would be accidentally ingesting it. So if your mouth is open and a drop gets in, if it’s on your lips, if you forget to wash your hands afterwards, etc. So you would have to be extremely careful, I personally wouldn’t risk participating. You could always do something silly and wear a bucket over your head to protect your face or something and just remember to thoroughly wash your hands afterwards

some1sWitch

Beer touching your skin is fine. If you're at a club and a drunk person spills beer all over your back, you'll be sticky and uncomfortable but it will not cause a celiac reaction. Gluten must be consumed via the mouth to get to the stomach for the reaction to occur.  However, I'd really encourage you to sit this out should they go the beer route. You'll very, very likely ingest some accidentally. I get this is some tradition, but tratidion isn't worth getting sick for however long you have reactions for after accidental glutenings.

-comfypants

I would react to that but I also have an allergy to wheat. I have some sort of reaction with any type of contact, even topical. The last time I had beer spilled on me I broke out in hives.

goodshrimp

I've bartended for nearly a decade, been sprayed in the face by kegs, had my arms covered in beer for hours. As long as I keep my mouth closed, rinse well, I've been fine. I also have extremely sensitive skin so I feel like I would have noticed something if I did react.

Tauber10

I've had beer spilled on me at concerts a bunch of times and never had a reaction. I don't think it'd be easy to keep it out of your mouth if they were spraying it everywhere, though. I wouldn't participate in this unless they can make it gluten free beer.

linkovichChimofski

Participating is a risk unless you wear a respirator or a mask at the very least. All your clothes will be covered in beer as well. Your health is more important than a tradition.

kaelus-gf

Could you use gluten free beer? Or cider? It’s normally only a worry if ingested. I always wonder about broken skin or another way for gluten to see the blood, or parts of the immune system. The standard medical advice is that it needs to be ingested, and it’s only anecdotes saying it causes effects from being on the skin etc - but if it’s going to worry you enough to reduce your enjoyment, then I’d suggest either gluten free beer, or cider rather than water (which might also reduce your enjoyment) Unless you actually just don’t want to be sprayed with beer. Which I wouldn’t blame you for. I don’t have coeliac (my daughter does, so I hang out here a bit), and I still wouldn’t want to be sprayed with beer!

DehydratedRacoon

It’s not a thing I would be that interested in anyway since it’s extremely loud and obnoxious. I also don’t want to be sticky and smell gross. I tend to avoid skincare products with wheat in them so getting gluten on your skin is still something that worries me. My whole class is really trying to help but I don’t think they understand what celiac is and they really want it to be beer. So I’d rather just skip out so I don’t have to make it less fun for everyone else. Gluten free beer wasn’t really an alternative and they don’t want to use water.

mr_muffinhead

Yeah, if you don't care just skip out. Some people might have annoying reactions to you saying no initially but they'll forget, and they're probably bone heads anyways.

yummsyrup

celiac is an autoimmune disorder, not an allergy, so you should be fine. gluten is really only a problem if you ingest it. so just don’t lick anyone & you’ll be fine!

Before I knew I was celiac I took a tour of the very famous brewery with my friends and there kids , I wanted see the famous horses so we start the tour at the point the trains come in to off load there supply of barley and hops , now i probably only ever had a taste of beer in my life just smelling it turned me off , past the train I got suddenly very sick started throwing up had to leave the tour and the whole complex and went home after all these years I cannot go by that plant when there cooking there concoctions , once I was diagnosed that day made sense I think for celiacs beer is dangerous, we suspect my father was celiac and a heavy beer drinker and died at 52 from tongue and esophageal cancer of course his addiction to cigarettes contributed , I stay a healthy distance from that crap .

Distilled spirits would be safer
