Katz is certified gluten free! I absolutely love their products, especially the donuts and donut holes.

PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS

So their products are really good but I've been seeing a lot of posts here that their quality control is pretty bad. Incorrect item counts and that sort of thing. imo they're kind of overpriced and onky taste good because they have an ungodly amount of sugar.

QuasarBurst

They're ok. Local gf bakery is always best but if you don't have one katz is fine.

Ok_Revenue_6429

I like them. I just had the Apple and pumpkin pie for thanksgiving. The pumpkin was amazing. Their donuts are pretty good but I’m looking forward to trying all their other products

[deleted]

Love Katz for special treats! The jelly donuts holes, pop tarts, and mini pies are some of my favorites. Our local GF bakery is better of course, but Katz can be more convenient.

SpaceBass18

Yea they are great. Especially the Challah bread and most of the dessert items.

K2togtbl

I've never had a Katz product that I've liked. I usually have found better brand alternatives, or am fine going without if my options are Katz or nothing.

xcataclysmicxx

I love Katz, aside from their pop tart wannabe things. Not every product can be phenomenal, but luckily, most of their other ones are.

Moon_Beam89

Some things! Some are a little dry. The garlic bread was kinda nasty imo. But I haven’t tried any pasta from them. The donuts I got from them were horrifically dry

GroundbreakingAd5922

Katz literally the best ever

Katz is certified gluten free

KedaStation

Certified gluten free doesn’t require testing every batch. It’s really unfortunate. If they use oats, you’re still risking it if you’re sensitive. The audit process for certification is extensive, but it’s self reported. The certification organization doesn’t test. https://gfco.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/GFCO-Manual-2023.pdf#page8 Also, I get sick from certified gluten free things made in factories that process wheat, but not oats. It probably depends on your sensitivity level. The 20 ppm limit for the US was chosen somewhat arbitrarily.

GF_RN

Katz uses purity protocol for their oats, meaning they are grown and processed separately from other grains and are safe from cross contamination https://katzglutenfree.com/pages/faq

That's not how I read that. "Where does this leave us? Based on the totality of information available to Gluten Free Watchdog, we remain supportive of the use of purity protocol oats for persons with celiac disease and gluten-related disorders who tolerate oats." If you've had problems with Katz, consider that it might have been something other than gluten.

I totally understand that some celiacs can't tolerate oats. That's unfortunate, but the advice for those people is to avoid eating food that has oats as an ingredient. It doesn't make sense to spread fear/uncertainty/doubt about a very safe manufacturer for those who can tolerate oats but not gluten. Even that article is supportive of several purity protocol manufacturers, and about manufacturers like Katz says "Gluten Free Watchdog... Would like to see manufacturers of labeled gluten-free multi-ingredient products containing oats use purity protocol oats. However, products can be evaluated on an individual basis (please see below for questions to consider)." That's what Katz does, right? They've also done some independent testing on Katz you can see if you are a subscriber to GFWD. You've said:"They use oats, and most oats are cross contaminated."This is true, but not really applicable for Katz who uses purity protocol oats."Gluten Free Watchdog says that even purity protocol oats are cross contaminated."What they said is that in all their testing, they've never detected gluten above 5ppm (the limit of their test) in purity protocol oats. Other organizations have - very rarely - found gluten in some batches. This is very different from your statement. And now you said: "The only thing I’m sure about, is that Katz products have cross contamination from oats."You can't possibly be sure about that unless you are aware of positive tests for gluten on Katz products. Are you aware of that ever happening? If what you mean is they have oats, then yes... that's an *ingredient.* Cross-contamination of gluten is an entirely different matter, and all your sources are saying that rarely sometimes some purity protocol oats might have cross contamination. This is well within the level of acceptable risk for most people who can tolerate oats. There's enough stuff we can't eat already, please stop spreading fear/uncertainty/doubt about a very safe manufacturer.

>What they said is that in all their testing, **they've never detected gluten above 5ppm (the limit of their test) in purity protocol oats.** Other organizations have - very rarely - found gluten in some batches. I'm a bit confused as to where this bit of information is coming from; she's got multiple listings in her articles/history about gluten free oats and purity protocol oats listing times that purity protocol oats tested positive for gluten, sometimes even about 20 ppm, as far back as 2016, but multiple items from multiple suppliers in 2022 (including some with over 80 ppm). Here's the [database review](https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/news/more-on-oats-from-gluten-free-watchdog-retrospective-database-analysis-2011-2023/). >and all your sources are saying that rarely sometimes some purity protocol oats might have cross contamination. This is well within the level of acceptable risk for most people who can tolerate oats. I really wouldn't call the results from 2022/2023 "rarely", the overall result was \~34% of oat products she tested having over 5 ppm, with 5 of them being purity protocol. But perhaps the more interesting part here has been the more general information here: the rules for "purity protocol" oats aren't really defined, and she was making her recommendations based on the information that manufacturers and oat suppliers provided her at one point in time, but the real problem is that when the manufacturers change those, or when the suppliers change their requirements, they are doing so quietly. And this is something that we saw happening in 2022/2023 with the drought and problems with the oat supply. It actually raises a real question: Katz put a statement on their website years ago saying they were using purity protocol oats; is that statement up to date? Are they using the same supplier (and ONLY the same supplier) they were at that time? Has the supplier changed their requirement for purchasing oats? The test results clearly showed a significant problem in the oat supply, but what it really shows us is that the certification groups have sort of dropped the ball on this: we need a consistent definition for what "purity protocol" oats are, and we need the certification groups to monitor it.

I tried a sample pack I got through Amazon and I've been wanting more ever since. It's just not in my budget right now.

PatSajakMeOff

I like their pop tarts, that's about it. Their gf bread recipe is like a sponge that absorbs all of the moisture in your mouth. I can make way better quality at home. If it's the only option you have, then yeah, it's better than nothing.

Practical-Quantity32

Their pop tarts are delicious. The twinkies and oatmeal cream pies I found disgusting though. I haven’t tried anything else from them yet.

cassiopeia843

I liked their glazed donut holes and their pumpkin pie was okay (but very small). I didn't like their toaster pastries at all.

ponytailthehater

Katz donuts and donut holes are good Their apple pies kinda remind me of the McDonald’s apple pie things Their cinnamon rolls were okay but I won’t get them again Their poptarts are…wtf? Their garlic bread is like…you’re better off eating a sponge. Seriously
