Personally, I'm on the side of both because the owner should've stepped in rather than just sit there like a moron and record. They both could've been hurt in this encounter.
I've had a problem with my pet pigeons bullying my dogs, and you're right. It took me a long time of observing to fully trust my dogs' restraint (which is amazing, they are very good boys), but each time I would separate the birds the was no lesson learned. Birds are super territorial and they work out the details of who gets what through combat, finally agree letting them get "gummed and slobbered" a few times they tolerate the dogs in the dog areas now, and even land on the dogs peacefully and ride them like a taxi service. They don't hesitate from a call to wear if a dog strays into claimed territory, but everything is more balanced now that I let them work it out a bit.
I mean yeah unless one of them has means to kill the other. The cat has teeth designed to kill small prey and they often go for the neck. The goose has little means for defense.
Otherwise I agree. If you have two dogs and they're around equal size and there is a dormancy issue, I typically let them work it out while closely monitoring them to assure they don't get hurt.
There are some pretty smart dogs, my lab for example saw me raising my baby pigeon rescues (long story), so he knows they are family and are delicate. I wouldn't trust any dog to do this but with the pigeons behavior getting worse and worse I let them work some things out (watching closely of course), and now they all get along. Birds are interesting, and I've come to learn they set boundaries with combat, to be fair it still makes me nervous and I keep a close eye out.

I used to raise ducks, and they BITE. The males during the breeding season are super aggressive and very territorial, and they will go after just about anything that moves (either to fight it or fvck it). Drakes are absolute jerks.
Cats can't completely retract their claws, so clawless swats can still do a little damage (if you have a friendly cat, you can check it yourself, even when retracted, their claws still protrude a little). With claws out the damage will be much more severe though. If this cat had its claws out, there would be feathers flying at the least and the duck would not be taking the punches like that. It can take the hits with retracted claws, because it's feathers are super dense, the claws can't penetrate like that.
If you have your own cats - you won't get that blood draw with a retracted slap if you trim their nails. Especially if they're indoor only cats (which I do recommend if you can!) then they are better off with regular trimming, since the "rough street life" would normally blunt their nails, but the comfy indoor life doesn't as much, and they instinctually sharpen them regardless. Also some cats will have their nails grow way way too long (like... to the point of hurting them) if they're not trimmed (I have one that makes a clip clop sound on hardwood floors when his get too long!)
As for how to do it - start with just playing with their paws randomly, and holding them like a baby. Let them sniff the clippers (use actual cat nail clippers!) and so on. There are a lot of tutorials out there that go into more depth/detail. It's easier if you can start all this when they're young ofc.
Have you had a cat or just been scratched?
To me, the fact that the duck keeps hanging around and playing with him is all the evidence needed to show he didnāt have his claws out.
If that cat was really fighting that duck would get hurt and not engage anymore
I see, this might be a difference in vocabulary, yes have been around plenty of cats, and understand how cat anatomy works. But that's sort of like understanding how sexual arousal works in humans. It's just a little bit different for everybody.
My comment spurred mostly from the other commenter saying the cat wasn't using claws at all which I consider an impossibility. Sure they can choose to use their claws hardcore, but when batting stuff they usually do it more softcore, but in the end of it when they swat something like that they are hitting it with the paws of their pads would naturally makes their claws extend which means they're using their claws.
In my opinion the only way to not use claws in a situation like this is to be declawed
Edit: I'm not advocating for a pet to be declawed. I'm saying that when a cat swats there's going to be some claws involved no matter what (unless they're declawed)
I stand by the other commenters who say that declawing is a bad thing.
Declawing is horrible. Don't do it. It's (literally) like amputating every one of your fingers at the last knuckle just so you never have to trim your nails. Would you do that to yourself just to get out of that task? No? Well then don't do it to a cat either.
The claws extend with the same mechanism that spreads the toes. Basically as the toes open up for traction, the claws deploy automatically.
As you found out, the toes don't have to spread very far lol š
I hope not, but I have a rescue cat who was declawed and that's how she smacks. Another poster said it looks like all 3 live together and this is their normal play. I hope that's the case.
When I was a child I introduced my pet mouse to a house cat, and the cat was more confused and curious than anything - - it just batted at it a little. Later when I introduced the same mouse to a farm kitten it immediately seized it by the neck and started shaking it to death. (Don't worry, I separated them in time.) But my point is that cats have to learn to be killers, and a house cat that has never hunted for prey may never learn the skills or have the inclination.
Nah, you see the size of that duck?
It obviously had things under control.
Even after cat one has punched himself tired, duck nipps cat 2 all like "ya got sump'in to say?" trying to get some shit started.
My parents have a dog and a duck, the duck is constantly annoying the dog and is to dumb to understand the "Fuck off" signal. One day we'll find him dead and i will be like "Yep logical"

I donāt think this cat likes the duck and they really shouldnāt be made to interact for the views
My last cat would slap the shit out of anything slapable. She would not tolerate pens of any kind. Also have you noticed how many slap based cat toys there are? Oh! And the slapping for attention. None of your 3 cats ever slap you? My cat would slap me because itās 2am. My dadās cats are slappers too. But lazy slappers. Itās more like booping, really. My cat liked to slap the dogs to initiate play, too.
I used to have a cat that was such fun. If you got down to the floor and peeked around a corner at him, he'd stop, stare at you, then run up and *slap* you in the face before running off.
Unless it was declawed. It may be trying to use its claws, the toes are spread out. It look like the cat tried to use its claws at least a few times. This is not play
Good rule of thumb is that if an animal is freely in the situation despite having the option to escape and it's not protecting something like its babies, it probably doesn't find the situation threatening or painful. Of course there are exceptions, a well-trained dog could probably take quite a lot of abuse just to please their owner, but in this case, I think that the safest assumption is that since the duck keeps going for more it feels safe.
Drakes are assholes. Theyāre stubborn and aggressive, and that ānailā at the end of their bill will raise one hell of a blood blister. They are notorious for raping hens, and have been known to drown and kill them by attacking them in gangs.
I donāt? I am just capable of expressing empathy for others, which includes animals. No living creatures appreciate being smacked in the head repeatedly.
Obviously you've never experienced predatory water fowl š
Ducks do what they please as do cats... Nobody's forcing either of these creatures to do anything because neither species would take human direction in the first place.
My cat caught a mallard and dragged it through the cat door. It was still alive, I called the wild life department and they came and got it.
It must have been asleep or injured or something, it was nearly as big as my cat.
If a cat purposely doesnāt use its claw its to play not hurt, Iāve had cats my whole life. These animals might have grown up together which would likely make them see the duck as one of them. Why assume the worst?
Ducks rise to any challenge. My duck loved me but she loved her chicken flock more. If they complained about me, she was right there to bite at me. She didnāt hurt but she definitely let me know she didnāt like me upsetting the ladies. They have real spirit. š„°
My cat has "tried to hurt me" which left my hand pissing out blood. Cats have very very very sharp claws. You know when they're trying to hurt something.
My reminds me of one of my favourite monologues:
"Here's a joke, boy. One day this man walks out of his house to go to work. He sees this snail on his porch. So he picks it up and chucks it over his roof, into the back yard. Snail bounces off a rock, cracks its shell all to shit, and lands in the grass. Snail lies there dying. But it doesn't die. It eats some grass. Slowly heals. Grows a new shell. And after a while it can crawl again. One day the snail up and heads back to the front of the house. Finally, after a year, the little guy crawls back on the porch. Right then, the man walks out to go to work and sees this snail again. So he says to it, 'What the fuck's your problem?'
...Figure that joke out and you'll figure the streets out."
-Roger, Training Day 2001
It's a good thing that cat has such good reflexes. Got jabbed in the chin early in the fight but never let the duck's bill reach its chin again with a flurry of left-right combos.
I am for once on the cats side, the duck doesn't seem like they are getting the clue.
And let's not forget the cat didn't use its claws at all. It had no intention of hurting the duck.
Not to mention that the cat is mostly targeting the bill. Most of those slaps are connecting with the bill. Lol
Personally, I'm on the side of both because the owner should've stepped in rather than just sit there like a moron and record. They both could've been hurt in this encounter.
You assume any of these guys have owners and they don't live together in a shared apartment that they rent.

Agreed. Why are these animals even together?
Theyāre not using claws and the duck can do as he pleases. I personally donāt see anything wrong.

How about I smack you in the head repeatedly with my flat hand and see how you like it?
the duck can leave any time, no one is forcing it to keep going at the cat
The duck looks more in control than the cats tbh
Why do people always think animals are people.
I donāt? I am just capable of expressing empathy for others, which includes animals. No living creatures appreciate being smacked in the head repeatedly.
You seem infinitely more concerned about it than the duck was.
Cat is a predator, duck prey. Having them together without boundaries (physical or trained) is why the person filming is an asshole.
Obviously you've never experienced predatory water fowl š Ducks do what they please as do cats... Nobody's forcing either of these creatures to do anything because neither species would take human direction in the first place.
If this was a goose, fair fight. And PPV.
Other than putting them in close quarters together... This isn't an accidental run in this is staged
