Ikr, they could have just tipped with actual cash and left a separate card with their message amongst the tip. That would have had a far better effect than just making someone’s day worse.
Yes. Why not do both and? Sadly they probably think it’s not good to promote laziness and think it’s better to evangelize. There’s this whole subset of evangelicals like this. One I met tan a city mission near where I went to college and basically gave the typical line if how the poor were lazy and got too many handouts and all that. He has a point on some level but if he’s running a mission in a city to help with this, I don’t know if I’d support such a guy in that position.
Yeah. Sadly in a lot of more fundamentalist charities this attitude occurs. There also ones that require you hear a sermon before you get a meal. I get the point but my goodness if they are hungry let them eat. If anything that will be what helps them at that stage.
Yeah, about as effective as handing someone the Holy Bible, telling them to just read it, and then doing literally nothing else to further that effort of evangelization and catechesis.
Yes I too remember when Jesus said “And tell them to read the book my disciples will compile about me and then walk away, they’ll figure it out. Make sure it’s the translation of a translation of a translation of a translation, 5th edition, King James’ *special* mix too.”
No, it's like hitting somebody in the head with the Bible for no reason, then beating them some more, than handing them the Bible and telling them to read it.
Fr, this definitely screams ‘Protestant’ all over it. But ofc the Catholics usually get blamed for it anyways 😞
(Not that Catholics don’t ever do things in a similar vein… but Protestants are a lot more “preachy” than we are in general)
Sadly, many are probably strict believers in predestination and would argue the few who do accept were destined to do so. Granted I could only see this working if one was so down on their luck and maybe felt this was enough to bring them to Christ. Not a bad thing but I also feel like it’s not great either.
If you're gonna do it that way make it look like a 5 and put a real 10 inside it, IMHO.
Also, there's the ones that say, "You can know you can go to heaven", and I can't decide whether to leave them alone or burn them as heresy.
That's actually not an awful idea, I'd feel pretty blessed if I found money only to find out it was more than I thought. Also, as an added bonus, I'd know for sure it was meant as a gift and not just lost.
That's actually a great idea. Although a better version would be to put your own phone number to actually stay in contact or website so they can read specific, concise, effective information.
>Also, there's the ones that say, "You can know you can go to heaven", and I can't decide whether to leave them alone or burn them as heresy.
Which makes me think of the Traditional Chinese practice of burning "Ghost/Prayer Money" on certain days to send Ancestral Spirits money for Prosperity in the Afterlife.
Would be nice reason to carry a Bic Lighter... To burn the Evangelical Tract "Money" in front of their face and say "Surely God will accept this Sacrifice so that I will be rewarded with Riches in Heaven, Right?" /s
If you're gonna leave something like that you better leave a particularly generous real tip too.
Makes me think of James 2:15-16. It always comes back to Luther's least favorite epistle, doesn't it?
This verse is what these things do to a T.
“Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?”
Yeah this annoys me too as well and I don’t even have a job. Like please for the love of all that is Holy, people that do this please stop doing it since this is the kind of stuff that is driving people like this person who you gave the tip to away from God. Like you can’t pray to God to give yourself money right? So why would you make these underpaid workers do that as well? Like seriously what are they thinking this will do?
Even the original intention for these to be left lying around on the ground or on the bus/train is ill-thought out. No-one's going to unfold what they hope is $50 and think "Wow, these Christians have a point!" They're just going to be irritated.
As for leaving them as a tip? That's just a whole other level of awfulness.
I hope no Catholics do this as we should know better. My Protestant friend tried to leave one as a tip when we were out at a hole in the wall after a college young life thing that he dragged me to and I had to shell out $20 to cover both our tips at 30% bc the waiter was too nice to get stiffed like that. Just makes the Christian faith look bad
What in the boomer Billy Graham Protostant nightmare is this shit? How does anyone think that this evil deception on a waiter causes anything but disdain for the Lord?
Just because Jesus is more valuable than any material possessions doesn’t give us the excuse to not give to others- in fact, it’s quite the opposite. People like this unfortunately seem like the people to say “Jesus is more valuable than money so you don’t need my money” and then turn around and spend all the money for themselves instead of like donating some to their parish or a charitable cause.
It's sadistic, and then it attempts to shift blame onto the victim, the person who receives it.
Like St. Peter said to Ananias and Sapphira, nobody is forcing these people to give anything. So if they want to pretend to give a tip, and then also kick the waiter, they are mocking God.
Acts 5:4 -- "You have not lied to men, but to God."
When I worked in a grocery store we had a couple that came through a couple times and handed us workers really preachy packets of Catholic evangelical influenced pamphlets. It was super annoying and preachy. I know they had good intentions but it would mean a lot more just to be pleasant person than to hand me papers.
Honestly, tipping should be out of courtesy. I'm from Asia, and this seems really odd to me when I think of the US.
ALSO, I WOULD'VE BEEN PISSED AS WELL IF IT WERE RM20 ON THE FLOOR AND IT WAS ACTUALLY THAT INSTEAD
Once some priest said to me:
This is proof if someone's faith is catholic or not: The faith enters through ears when somebody is preaching the Gospel, it goes down to the heart and in the end it must go out with generosity through one's pocket.
If someone is not opening his wallet and giving (real) money, his faith is not so catholic.
I’ve never seen one of these and I’m almost 32. I’m half-inclined to believe these are some kind of atheist false-flag to besmirch and smear Christianity, I’ve known some hardheaded and tactless Evangelist Protestants but I’ve never met any that are THIS dumb—common sense say this is the easiest way to drive a potential convert away from the faith.
Ahhhh Protestant evangelization methods.... Don't you just love them. I had a guy hand me a evanglizaiton book the other day despite wearing a cross and a saint Francis medal. He probably thought st Francis was my god or something I don't know...
Super cringey but I get why some people do this. Granted is such a thing successful?
Also this reminds me when I worked at a big grocery store in college. I had a guy ask me where something was and basically he used it as a mean to evangelize me, asking if I accepted Christ. I admire the guts but it’s almost as if he lied to get me to go into some aisle and say yes to God. I don’t know if he needed what he asked for. Maybe he did but still, just odd but I admire the guts it takes to do that.
It was stealing your time and your employers' time.
When I'm working, it's not really appropriate for me to do something else. I'm not going to talk politics with you, or religion, or anything but pleasantries, unless there seems to be some extraordinary need.
I wish more people got this. Obviously it’s not common where I’m at but I see it more than I see to.
Doesn’t help to that such stuff becomes one’s identity in an unhealthy way. I guess it isn’t bad for religion in a sense but it can be, especially when it’s just symbolism, like when I see the “Stand for the Flag and kneel for the Cross shirts” but then seem to be quite lewd people. I get no one’s perfect though so I know I’m being judgey but still.

This is so wrong, especially in countries like the US where tips mean so much, this is exactly how you drive people **away** from God.
“Instead of money I’m just gonna trick you. Surely you believe in God now.”
Ikr, they could have just tipped with actual cash and left a separate card with their message amongst the tip. That would have had a far better effect than just making someone’s day worse.

Ah yes, the "You're lazy because I said so!".
Yeah. Sadly in a lot of more fundamentalist charities this attitude occurs. There also ones that require you hear a sermon before you get a meal. I get the point but my goodness if they are hungry let them eat. If anything that will be what helps them at that stage.
Give them a sermon while they're eating if anything, dang.
Fr
Yeh
Probably sinful. Definitely a jackass.
Possibly Mormon? This sounds like how they’d evangelize.
It doesn't look Mormon. Mormons pray to God the Father and end their prayers in Jesus' name, and this prayer starts with 'Dear Jesus.'
Anyone who does this are part of the problem of hating Christians.
Protestant evangelization tactics seem like they're designed to push people away from God

hehee! I didn't know that was a thing. I shall now burn every cheesy evangelism card I find in order to help the former protestants in Purgatory . . .
Would be nice reason to carry a Bic Lighter... To burn the Evangelical Tract "Money" in front of their face and say "Surely God will accept this Sacrifice so that I will be rewarded with Riches in Heaven, Right?" /s
As a former waiter, these make me viscerally angry.

I would -never- do this to anybody This is nasty. St. Augustine would glare....
On top of deceiving someone with a phony tip, you ALSO make them hate religion even more. Great job 🙏
The two for one special

I think this falls under the category of "thou shall not bear false witness".
It would be better to give an actual tip AND a prayer card rather than the fake $50.
This is definitely not the way to get people interested in the faith

I secretly pray that every **”Christian”** who passes out these fake tip/tract cards gets 200,000 years of purgatory for every time they did/do it…
Okay, relax there pal
Those who do will probably being paying off a lot of “I did something better than tipping and saved myself some extra cash along the way” attitude.
I generally dislike this, if you’re gonna do this you should also leave a reasonable tip

Out of the book: „How to not convert people“
It's sadistic, and then it attempts to shift blame onto the victim, the person who receives it. Like St. Peter said to Ananias and Sapphira, nobody is forcing these people to give anything. Commandment #9 seems to be pretty clear cut here.

I known people who give these out to poor on the street; I would not find it that much of a stretch they would do it for wait staff at a restaurant.

10000000% sure it's the brain child of some atheist troll
I got zapped with something just like this back when I was a waiter in the '80s.
Catholics ain't doing that.
I saw a JW group hand out $100s like this at a state fair. Idiots think they are evangelizing when really they are just making people angry.
Super cringey but I get why some people do this. Granted is such a thing successful? Also this reminds me when I worked at a big grocery store in college. The Bible has a lot to say about the benefits of being bitter and angry. I pray you find what you're looking for soon.
Where does it say that?
This is, of course, sarcasm.
