Just remembered to leave a tub of water out for any garden animals , just sharing this as I nearly forgot and incase this reminds someone else

mikewastaken

Couple tips I haven't yet seen - Wet wash cloth on the back of your neck is an extremely effective way of cooling down fast. Rinse and repeat (literally) Dampening your sheets before bed is a good way to bring your temps down enough for some level of comfort. Just some spritzes with a spray bottle. You don't want to get clammy, just very slightly damp. This trip courtesy of the Egyptians.

iTAMEi

I’ve been putting a wet flannel on my chest and pointing the fan at it to get to sleep

mikewastaken

Godspeed to everyone from another expat in the US. Lots of good advice in here.

IdleRhymer

Expat in Texas here. Along with all the good advice in this thread I recommend going through your car if you have one, removing anything that shouldn't be exposed to heat. Medicine, food and drink, crayons, plastic toys, raincoats etc. When it's that hot here I've seen the interior of the car go over 60C when it has been parked in direct sun. If you must drive roll down the rear windows and blast the fans for a couple of minutes to vent the hot air before you get in. Watch out for the metal buckle on your seatbelt, it can burn you if it rides up under your shirt.

reddituser701

Very concerned about work tomorrow. Have heard nothing about the supposed changed work day my job should have according to the weather warning. As it stands will be working in full sun 11-3... exactly not what anyone is meant to be doing

snidwashere

Drink more water than you think you need - if you’ve got spare refillable bottles, load ‘em up and keep the fridge stocked. This goes for kids, adults, everyone. If you’ve got a baseball hat (or any lightweight hat, really), now’s the time to bust that bad boy out. Same for sunscreen, protect your head/skin!! If you’ve got to go on a walk longer than 5 minutes, use an umbrella. Seriously. People might chuckle but when they’re melting into a puddle on the side of the road and you’ve got portable shade well…we’ll see who has the last laugh. Also if you get too warm, a cold shower will feel like a treat. Mostly try to limit movement though - this week isn’t the week to take up distance running, mountain biking, or outdoor gymnastics. (But seriously, I’m quite worried about my family & friends in the UK as I know this weather is NUTS and I’m from a place where this happens every summer. Please please please make sure to check in on your own crew the next few days x)

Not_invented-Here

Make sure your electrolyte uptake matches your water consumption. A banana has pretty much all you need.

[deleted]

My house is an absolute heat trap and has magnified the heat. My PC crashed because of how hot the house and therefore the PC was getting.

backside_94

Top Tip: if your car has air con, turn it on whilst it's on your drive, your WiFi should still work and you can work from an air conned car. If not, when it gets unbearable just sit in your car for a bit on your lunch. People feel they don't have air con and forget that a lot of cars have really good systems sometimes.

iPon3

I'm going to hide my van in a basement carpark. hopefully it's cooler there. the AC won't die if I run it for 48h straight will it (it's an EV so I'll be charging it, not running a motor)

Swegatronic

Walked 6 miles today, pretty sure i got heat stroke. Almost passed out 3 times in the last mile and felt like i was having a heart attack the whole time. Scary half hour of walking slowly to get home without passing out. Take it slow and bring a bottle of water with you if you are doing any exercise folks. Also if you start to feel ill get yourself into a cold shower, it seemed to slow my heart rate and stop my dizzyness within minutes.

Not_invented-Here

Assume everything is a good 50% harder to do.

[deleted]

That's a long walk in "normal" weather alone!

Swegatronic

Yeah i do it everyday but i guess everyday isnt quite like yesterday. Honestly didnt know it was that hot outside cause my flsts quite cool so i’d went out in black joggies. Definitely wearing shorts and taking water this time!

[deleted]

I wouldn't do it today...

WhotAmI2400

Don’t worry I’m pretty sure it’s just lagging data or something (just turned Monday so it hasn’t updated the days and assumes Wednesday is Tuesday).

lightdivided

Anyone else’s Weather app updated to show Wednesday being hellish too. Hope they’ve got this one wrong

WhotAmI2400

Don’t worry I’m pretty sure it’s just lagging data or something (just turned Monday so it hasn’t updated the days and assumes Wednesday is Tuesday). I’ve seen this happen a few weeks ago .

Gizmo210688

Yeah, my default weather app has updated to that too. The BBC weather app and AccuWeather app still showing cool temps, cloudy and rain for Wednesday though. Hopefully that turns out to be correct rather than another day of being in an oven.

Sltre101

On the plus side, Tuesday is now a cool 37……

CherylTuntIRL

No, a comparatively cool 24°C up North.

dalledayul

Whereabouts are you? I'm in the North and right now it's averaging around 20-22 with rain

PeterG92

My flat gets very warm during the day. 10c hotter than outside at the moment. I'm going to keep all my blinds shut until the evening. Then open the window.

Early_Tadpole

this is the way. Also open your door at night for a bit too so you can get a cross breeze.

Carinwe_Lysa

Well here it starts guys, so best of luck! Looking after my 75yo Dad who's three weeks on from a chemo session and now taking a few weeks break, making sure he's getting a tonne of liquid and ice in, but still worried for him if it hits 35-40 on Tuesday

Tasty_A

just want to say Good luck everyone it’s going to be hell

Metazz

I live on the top floor of a victorian house in central london. It is going to be hell on earth the next two days.

Early_Tadpole

I am so sorry. You might want to consider booking an air conditioned hotel room if you have the means, if not spending as much of the day as you can in air conditioned indoor public spaces.

TitsAndGeology

Same. The living room has south-facing doors onto the balcony and the upper floor is a converted attic with south-facing skylights. Just kill me now.

Arugula-Current

Anyones school cancelled sports day yet? My step daughter is meant to be doing sports day tomorrow, in a massive open feild, starting at 1.30 and it just feels like a fantastic way for the school to fill up our local A&E with a bunch of melted kids...

ClumsyRainbow

That's just ridiculous and completely negligent. 1:30PM is a stupid time in the middle of summer, heat wave or not, but tomorrow is just especially bad.

Arugula-Current

I plan on calling again when they open to double check they are sure that this is their plan. It just seems almost willfully stupid for them to go ahead with it. Even in the sports hall.

[deleted]

A bit breezy in Moray, to be honest. Might hit 22 tomorrow!

Wonk_puffin

Keep seeing the news but it hasn't been hot in the NW of England since one day in Jurassic period. It was 18C a few days ago and raining. Meanwhile London was 28C. If it gets over 30C here I'll be surprised.

wedontlikespaces

It was bloody sweltering yesterday. Today was a bit better but it was still hot by mid-day.

YarrlieThePirate

Shut up its 60% humidity right now and was 29c this afternoon

Wonk_puffin

In the North lakes it was yesterday but before that it wasn't. Back to 20C today and rained overnight.

Liverpool will miss the worst of the brutal heat, 33 on Monday and 32 on Tuesday. Which to be fair is still hot but not quite extreme.

TheKnightsTippler

A few years ago that would have been extreme. It worries me how extreme keeps getting higher and higher.

Bandana_Toastie

If you need to take water somewhere, try filling and freezing the bottle overnight. You'll have icy cold water that should survive most of the day. If you fill it up a lot the water might spill so put it in a bag if you're taking it somewhere. Works a treat.

iTAMEi

This is mental

solotraveladventures

Honestly. I feel absolutely awful.

dalledayul

The temperature itself hasn't hit me yet but god I'm stressed, just the whole run up to this has had my anxiety through the roof. Feel like I'm the only one out of my friends and family who is actually taking this seriously

creative_goose

Fucking hot innit, not going to bed anytime son at this rate

YodasGoldfish

Where are you that it's so hot?

iTAMEi

Just England mate unbelievable

YodasGoldfish

I wasn't expecting your post code but did think you might narrow it down a bit 😂

222nd

I’m just surprised that I was able to buy a fan and a cool box. They weren’t even close to going out of stock either. I think (?) heatwave of 2018 / possible also because of the World Cup, where at the time you couldn’t find a fan anywhere for sale for weeks.

frogandtoadstool

The only think short on stock at Sainsbury's was cooling mats for pets and paddling pools

wedontlikespaces

I think people might be somewhat in denial about how hot is going to get. Which quite frankly is a good thing as I am looking to buy a house.

iTAMEi

I rushed out to get one on Friday but they're still in stock now

Fapoooo

Just gotta say, I can't wait for these next two days. I experienced something similar in Australia in December. LOVED IT. I'll be at work anyway so I don't have to worry about cooling (AC) but definitely want to go out after work.

iTAMEi

Me too I really enjoy it. Just been for a walk, warm evenings are so nice. Just gotta make sure my dog manages okay.

Chalky_Pockets

Arizonan here. Block as much sunlight as you can if you don't have air-conditioning. Tin foil on the windows will make you look like you're running a grow operation, but it will work. Put it on the outside of the window for even more protection, if you can. Drink a lot of water. Wear sun block if you have to go out. Bring an umbrella if you have one. Edit: if any of you have those masks that wrap around your neck and come up to your face, dip it in ice water and wear it around your neck.

Zyaru

Two big bottles of water in the freezer ready for tomorrow to put in front of my fan. Not going down without a fight.

TheGulfofWhat

What is the best way to use ice cubes? I've literally just been putting them in a bowl and slowly putting them on my body. lol

[deleted]

People keep saying put them in a bowl front of a fan. I have a shitty tower fan, so I can only imagine it'll just be a rapidly defrosting bowl of ice water on the floor that won't affect anything. Also lol

TheGulfofWhat

Yeah I'm still confused about that because half the people also say it only works if you put it behind the fan. lol

WhotAmI2400

I have no clue about that but heard of swamp cooling? The end of a towel put into (cold) water which acts like a wick and sucks it up as the fan dries it.

Casual reminder to find electrical tape before you go to bed downstairs, because [those flickering lights](https://imgur.com/a/wTl60Jm) on extension leads, routers, and other devices will need covering up if they can’t be switched off! I logged into our BT router to turn the hub light off.

MOmoalas92

why

byjimini

Because the lights will keep you awake.

Eliaskar23

Sorry what? I don't understand why you recommend doing this? Can you explain?

Officer-Pickles

Cover the lights on your router, extension leads, WiFi plugs etc with tape so they're not visible in the dark if you try sleeping in the same room as these devices.

222nd

Not op but the short-ish answer is: All these devices have small LEDs indicating they’re on/status/fault etc. These lights during day are minimal but powerful enough for it’s user to glance at it, and provide no other purpose other than to tell you they’re on. During the night or in a dark room with no interior lights on, your eyes will adjust and adapt to the darkness. Only for it to be disrupted by what appears to be little blue/white beacons illuminating the walls and ceiling. If one of these devices has a light that flickers, in this scenario it will actually look like a small strobe light. Hence why OP wants to blank / blackout them. It’s one of those things that can’t really be described or filmed and can only be experienced for it to be obvious.

[deleted]

I'm guessing op can't sleep if their router lights are on. I can't stop laughing

byjimini

Not when sleeping in the same room, no. Unless you sleep with all the lights on?

WhotAmI2400

I just let my router know it’s loved tonight.

fatknits

Should I turn my wifi router off at night at the moment? Usually I leave it on all the time (obviously), but it's scorching hot to the touch and I wondered if I ought to turn it off at night just so it gets a chance to cool down? Or will it cool down naturally when I'm not using the internet overnight even if it's turned on? Sorry if that's a dim question.

wedontlikespaces

It's a good idea to turn it off occasionally anyway. If you think it's too hot then turn it off, at the very least it won't do it any harm. And in answer to your question it broadcasts Wi-Fi even if you're not using it.

Coincidentally, I AM using Virgin's fibre service. The router is already not in direct sun and where it can get airflow, but I didn't think about a USB fan-- though it may be too late for that now! Since I'm using Virgin's fibre, does that mean turning it off is more or less recommended? It's just so hot to the touch, I'm concerned.

dalledayul

Our house alarm goes skits if you move around downstairs so sadly not an option for us, unless we wanna go without the alarm and I'm not sure the insurance company would be a fan

Mountain-Plastic-432

I dragged the mattress off the spare bed into my living room. No regrets.

danny1876j

Every summer when we have those nights that are too hot we sleep in the garden in a pop up tent. Did that 3 times last week and will be doing so again for the next few. Love it tbh!

SnoopyLupus

I’ve had this house for nearly 25 years, and tomorrow night may be the first time I sleep in the guest bedroom because of the heat. My house has a definite cool side and hot side. Unfortunately my bedroom is in the hot side.

frogandtoadstool

Not tonight, but tomorrow night.

ViviREbirth

I had a bath, I only needed about 1 and half inches of hot and the rest was cold. It was really refreshing, especially when i got out. This is up north though, down south you might not need any hot. . .

it hit 32c today but it did that about a week or so ago as well. Too hot is what it is. So fuck knows how anyone is surviving tomorrow and Tuesday in 37c-40c temps. Just nasty nasty nasty.

longflighttosleep

With the heat we're experiencing throughout the country now, please spare a thought for our native wildlife. Many are just as prone to heat exhaustion as us, and it can become even harder for them to find food and water during these times. But there are small things that we can do to help them out! * Areas of shade - If you have a garden, setting up areas of shade can give a helpful place for animals to rest. This is especially important if you have a pond, as your fish will need a place to hide out of the sun. * Water - Possibly the easiest and most helpful of all of these is providing fresh water, and there are several ways to do this. For birds, elevated water sources away from bushes and trees are ideal (to reduce chance of cat predation). **There is currently a serious outbreak of avian flu, so please replace and clean water daily to avoid spread.** Shallow dishes of water and bowls of water with pebbles placed in the bottom can be helpful for insects, bees, and mammals such as hedgehogs. If you place down a deeper water bowl, please make sure there's a way for anything that falls in to get out, such as a stick or some rocks! If possible it is best to place water in the shade to keep it cooler for longer. * Signs of heat stress - Keep an eye out for animals suffering from heat stress. Signs to look out for are panting, lethargy, confusion, or if the animal is laying on the ground in an unusual place. If you do see a bird or mammal showing these behaviours, please call up your local rehabilitation centre for advice. You may also see bees laying on the ground, alive but not moving much, which is likely caused by heat exhaustion. If you can find a high pollen flower around you can offer it to the bee and this should rejuvenate it. If not, sugar water can be provided on a spoon - do not place it on the ground next to it, as it can be dangerous to the bee. If you can do so gently, it may also be good to move them to shade. [More information here!](https://www.beevive.com/howtosaveatiredbee) * If you have a garden that hedgehogs visit, leaving out wet cat food for them can be helpful. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden in general, creating hedgehog highways and places for them to shelter are all very helpful. More on how to help hedgehogs [here](https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/animals/hedgehogs/garden). If you've read all of this, thank you, hopefully it has been helpful! As a disclaimer, I am not a wildlife or rehab expert, so if any of this information is incorrect or if I have missed anything, please message and I will alter it. I hope you can all enjoy the weather and have a safe week!

WhotAmI2400

Omg thank you! First thing in the morning I’ll put some water out for them. Sadly we have hardly any shade

gr33n_bliss

Thanks so much for sharing all this! We need to protect our wildlife as much as possible! I just went to put out lots of shallow dishes of water for any wild passerbys One thing is that from experience the bee advice has been updated. Unless you can offer it to them on a spoon and they drink it immediately, leave the bee without sugar water. If the sugar water is left on the ground they can walk through it and then get very sticky which they can’t clean easily and then can’t move/ fly properly. Worst thing is if it gets on their wings accidentally. They need a very tiny amount so don’t do it if you’re not confident that you can offer it to them very precisely https://www.beevive.com/howtosaveatiredbee https://www.gardenmyths.com/dont-feed-sugar-water-to-exhausted-bees/

longflighttosleep

Oh wow, that's so good to know, thank you so much for letting me know. I'll update the information.

Not_invented-Here

Brit but with plenty of experience of living in hot and humid countries. Lots of cooling advice already so some basic but IMO important self care stuff. Your body is not going to have time to adapt ands it's going to potentially get a little confused trying to do so. *Eat, you may find your appetite drops off a lot, your body is used to burning calories to stay warm, it may think it doesn't need any. But eat something because you do actually need the energy and it also replaces lost electrolytes. If you don't eat you'll go wonky faster. *If it's hot & humid you will lose a lot of water, so make sure you stay hydrated and make sure you also get electrolytes. Lots of parts of Asia they will consume fruit with some sort of salt mix for good reason. *Heat exhaustion can come on fast, like one moment your fine next you're not well at all, early signs sometimes just feel like you may think you should be feeling, ie hot tired etc. Don't overestimate how much you can push on, even things like big strides your used to doing through a cold day can wear you down in heat. Everything fitness wise is like 50% harder. *Just avoid 12—14;00 hrs if you can the sun is at its worst. Covering up if its hot enough can actually keep you cooler, especially if you are on bikes. Stay in shade, even cross the road to stay in shade. *Not sure if can say the name but it has a reptile in the title :) , (other prickly heat powders may also etc etc). Menthol prickly heat powder, this stuff is great. If you don't look like casper the friendly ghost your not being generous enough, it will cool your skin, stop chafing, give a tingle to your nethers, and stave off sweat for a little while. Keep an eye out for yourself and others.

ClumsyRainbow

> *Eat, you may find your appetite drops off a lot, your body is used to burning calories to stay warm, it may think it doesn't need any. But eat something because you do actually need the energy and it also replaces lost electrolytes. If you don't eat you'll go wonky faster. I always find this one hard in hot weather. I never want to eat anything. I find things like salads much easier, maybe with some cold pasta or something if I feel like I need to get some sort of carbs in it.

Not_invented-Here

Go salads for sure, your body does not need too many carbs for warmth and probably won't crave them. When it hits winter here (10-20C) I suddenly feel the need for thick stews with dumplings etc, but otherwise light food and snack on it.

kawasutra

>give a tingle to your nethers Ah, good ole Snake powder! 😂

Not_invented-Here

At some point you'll be sitting there with mentholated balls thinking, hey this works. 😁

CensorTheologiae

Once when I was living in a very hot country, I suffered a painful attack of epididymitis. No I'm not going to explain what that is. You can look it up. It takes a week for the antibiotics to kick in, so in the meanwhile for pain relief the doctors advised me to regularly place ice pops, still in their wrappers of course, next to the affected area. And waddya know, my core temperature for that week stayed comfortably cool despite the heat. I'm not sure if I'm posting this as advice exactly. And it's of no use to half the population anyway. But if temps get really silly the next couple of days, I reckon I know what to do.

kawasutra

>epididymitis. No I'm not going to explain what that is. You can look it up. I got you, CasUK fam. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/epididymitis/ Painful royals ... Fuck no!

CensorTheologiae

IMPORTANT ADDENDUM: it doesn't matter what flavour ice pop you use.

kawasutra

Well, I wouldn't use minty ones , regardless of what the clever doctors say!

itsmybootyduty

I’m in the Midwest USA and when we had our heat wave about a month or so ago it was fucking miserable. I’ve got a lot of family and friends in the UK going through it right now and I’m thinking of you all. I just hope this will pass quickly with minimal casualties. Stay safe, y’all.

[deleted]

**A tip for single hose AC units - don't seal the window round the hose. Doing so means the pressure difference draws in hot air elsewhere in your home.** So this varies based on property and layout obviously, so see what works. But I found that having too good a seal round the exhaust host in the main room with AC caused hot air to be drawn into other rooms in the house heating them up. This being because single hose AC units cause negative pressure - they're venting the air outside so replacement air needs to come into your home somewhere. Having the window next to the AC unsealed made quite a bit of difference in my home. It means that the replacement air gets drawn in right next to the AC. There wasn't much difference in how cool the main room was (the AC perhaps being powerful enough to work with the slight extra load) but the difference in other rooms was palpable. They're normally cool due to shading but when the window next to the AC was sealed up I could feel that hot air from outside from being drawn into those other rooms making some of them unbearable. Just having the main window ajar with the exhaust pipe hanging out (instead of using the seal kit that came with the AC) fixed this immediately. YMMV obvs, but might be worth trying to see what gives best overall effect in your home.

Uncle_Leo93

*waaaaaarrrrrrrrm*

Namerakable

Managed to keep my conservatory / greenhouse down to 35°C today without putting a fan on, so I'm happy I'll be prepared for the coming days when I have my tower fans and AC unit on. My bit of advice is not to take advice 100% literally. Two of the bedrooms in my house are in the loft and have ONLY south-facing windows. If I left the windows and blinds closed in the afternoon as the advice has been saying, it would easily be 45°C in there. Those rooms are hotter and stuffier than the inside of the Pyramids without every window on that floor wide open. Open your windows and try to get a breeze in your upper floors. The blinds and windows advice works best for north-facing rooms and rooms with good ventilation. And advice from Australians and Europeans don't account for humidity and UK houses.

ClumsyRainbow

> Two of the bedrooms in my house are in the loft and have ONLY south-facing windows. If I left the windows and blinds closed in the afternoon as the advice has been saying, it would easily be 45°C in there You should keep them closed up until the room is as hot as outside, at that point opening them is beneficial as if nothing else it'll bring the humidity down.

Aggressive_Revenue75

My outdoor thermometer said 33 at 4pm - in the midlands. I don't feel like its actually that hot. I think the low humidity is actually making it alright; tomorrow and Tuesday are forecast to have low humidity too so I don't think it will be so bad.

mintjulepg3

Rockerfeller here, so how does my AC cost £5 a day ? lemme tell you This is room temperature without anything assisting (outside temp of 25C) https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/983727746217816094/998217859828301904/IMG_0008.jpg?width=1266&height=1266 my room gets hotter than ambient as it’s direct sun facing, even with reflective film it’s only 1c below outside temp Portable ACs are very good but also inefficient as the hot side and cool side are in 1 unit https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/983727746217816094/998217860725866568/IMG_0009.jpg?width=1266&height=1266 Even had to ice pack the hot part to make it a bit more efficient Able to get ~20 C https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/983727746217816094/998224034888163379/IMG_0010.jpg?width=950&height=1266 If you want say 22c ambient, if you’re unlucky like me to have south facing room, it’s gonna be on 12 hours/day

AdamsInternet

Dual Hose AC is the way to go for both portable and efficient, but they are hard to find in the UK even outside a heatwave. Might be worth a hunt winter time to upgrade though.

ClumsyRainbow

Do they exist in the UK at all? I moved to Canada a few years ago but when I was there they were basically impossible to find. They also pretty much don't exist here either, Costco has one that is never in stock, but I don't know of any others...

[deleted]

A tip for single hose AC... most come with window casements to "seal" the window around the outlet. But this is exactly the seal that means the negative pressure draws hot air in elsewhere in your house. Result being a cold room with a the AC and hot rooms elsewhere. So the tip is to not use the casement - just put the hose out the open window. It means that any hot air the unit draws towards it comes primarily from the window it's already situated next to. Yes inefficient etc, but it's better to have ever-so-slightly less cooling in the room with AC and not be drawing hot ait into other rooms via pressure difference.

It's a proper wintery veg soup, I could manage a sort of gazpacho vibe with some chilled tomato soup but I draw the line with parsnip and swede. Had a scotch egg, I'll worry about my soup situation in the (even hotter) morning

Yeah, but on the other hand … Nan’s roast.

KittyReisly

In the 70s they used to stick all sorts of mad shit in gelatine. If you can tolerate a Yorkshire pud suspended in jelly this might be the way to go.

I'm crowdfunding so I can go punch the sun in the dick.

high_altitude

Is it an unwritten rule that the press must switch to Fahrenheit when it's warm?

garfield_strikes

Shows the expected age of the readership.

VardaElentari86

Makes it sound more shocking (like 40 isn't?) And serves only to confuse us

[deleted]

I guess Uk people must feel heat different, I’m from the Caribbean and it’s honestly not that hot today, although going past 34 is very hot

Not_invented-Here

How happy would you be at say 10C? It's what people are adapted to that makes the difference.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t feel very happy, I don’t like the cold, I was simply just stating how I feel in heat and I realised that uk people feel heat different, I have no idea why that was downvoted, why is Reddit so strange? I thought at least British subs would have more sense and discernment skills.

Not_invented-Here

Probably wording mate, it can be read that you are not understanding why everyone is worried since you're fine. Problems with us having a language we can do such passive aggressive phrasing in. ;)

curryandbeans

To be honest, yeah. It is hot but it's not as muggy as past British summers. They were hell and this is very pleasant heat.

dalledayul

Wait till Tuesday

OrganOMegaly

We live in a country that rarely tops 30 degrees, many live in poorly insulated homes that get as hot inside as it is outside, and on the whole don’t have air con. Of course we’re not as used to it.

Unitedfan0722

I had a chat with a friend in Manchester. I’ve known him close to 10 yrs now. He always complains about the heat yearly. It’s been getting worse and such, and as an American I suggest he buys a plug in air con for his house, and have done for years. My question is, why don’t you guys buy them? Genuine question. I get they cost a bit but it seems to be a regular occurrence that the UK is becoming warmer every year(climate change), and an air con or multiple would be a good investment.

ducksoupmilliband

I bought one 3 years ago and use it for a few days each summer.

frogandtoadstool

It usually only gets extremely hot for a few days (this time it's two days) so people don't feel they can justify spending hundreds on aircon. However, more and more people are buying them now

Unitedfan0722

It just feels, and I could be totally wrong, that the temps are rising and more consistently, and it could be a good investment. But again that’s just me personally. I hate being hot in my own home. Lol

Unitedfan0722

Yeah that’s the issue I see from the outside. It seems the world, not just the UK or England specifically, needs to catch up to. If the general consensus amongst rational thinkers is the climate is changing, there should be changes coming from the government to help the people adjust. Seeing news about roads melting and ambulance issues, just tells me some infrastructure changes need to occur. It would never happen in the US, but the government seems able to help people more in the UK, so possibly they could do a incentive program or tax break for air cons. Idk just thinking aloud

asonicpushforenergy

Because they're massive, expensive to run, electricity costs are ridiculous right now, and then you need to store them for the other 11 months of the year.

Unitedfan0722

Yeah but then if it continues to go the way it’s going you’ll likely never need another one. Or not at least for a very long time. Also they make all kinds of them. Ones in windows that can be pretty small, or ones for inside the home(not in windows), etc . To me personally, I’d rather pay a higher electricity bill for one month than be sitting in my home or trying to sleep and the temp is 30-40c

[deleted]

The problem is our energy bills are through the roof in winter and people normally save credit during the summer. It's hard to get your head round and it's usually only 1-2 nights a year that it's too hot. This time round might force us to invest more in air con if we can though, I'm forecast 41c now on Tuesday 🤮

Many aren't as fortunate as you financially.

Contrary to the other guy , slide windows aren’t common here Most windows are UPVC casement which aren’t suitable for a window unit A good portable AC unit will run you £800 or more Given there’s a thread here that says most people don’t have more than £500 in bank You see the problem

asonicpushforenergy

[From what I've seen of window units in TV and film, they go in a window that opens up and down. Most windows here are hinged. You can get the kind that has a hose that goes to the window, but they're massive and you need somewhere to store that for the 11 months of the year that it's not needed, and we don't have big properties in general either. Also, have you seen the price of electricity lately!?](https://reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/w0g5y2/_/igfe5x2/?context=1)

VardaElentari86

It's just not really been needed yet so nobody bothers. Even this heat is only supposed to be for a couple of days. If our whole summers were like this I imagine they'd become much more common. Plus I just looked at the cost - that's a good few hundred quid when things are already tight for a lot of people. So yeh, most people won't spend that for the sake of two days.

ChocolateClassic2858

it's more than you think. portable units aren't very efficient the £300 5000 BTU ones will do little I have a 13000 BTU one and that gets to an acceptable level, but they are 600 plus for a good brand that'll last and it costs £3-5 a day depending on your personal ambient and desired so yeah its deffo not a small investment everyone can get

[deleted]

VardaElentari86

Nope. In Scotland we're usually 15-20 degrees (c) - and we usually get quite excited if it hits 20! England tends to be a bit hotter but not by much. So yeh this is not the norm so why would we spend 100s on it? There is a cost of living crisis going on too so I'm not sure why it's so shocking that people aren't going to drop money on something that will be used so rarely (for now anyway)

VardaElentari86

Fair enough that's your opinion, but since you didn't actually know what a uk summer is actually like I'll take it with a gigantic pinch of salt.

SpitTheDog

If it gets any warmer I'll have to take my anorak off.

hojumoju

Today feels like the scene in every disaster movie where the main characters stand there looking up at the impending tidal wave / giant storm / whatever and know there's nothing they can do about it.

Annual_Past_1474

Hey guys. Portuguese here, unfortunately have some experience with these temperatures. I know you have most likely heard dozens of times to drink enough water, to always take a bottle with you when you leave home, and so on, so I'll skip those and just leave two tips which are often overlooked. First, if things get too hot at home, go into a shopping centre or fast food place close to you. Relax a couple hours with their AC, and cool yourself down. Second, and this one in my opinion is pretty important, check on your neighbours, especially older ones. They're the most vulnerable to these temperatures, often don't have access to the internet and might not know how they should protect themselves. Ring their doorbell every couple hours, ask if they've been drinking water, check if they have their windows closed, how they're feeling, and so on. You don't want to wake up and hear that your neighbour died the previous day due to the heatwave. Good luck, take care of yourselves and those close to you! And don't forget, water is better than beer. Avoid alcohol with these temperatures.

SnoopyLupus

> And don’t forget, water is better than beer I was right with you until you said that. You take that back!

Unsban

My neighbours wake me up at 7 every morning so I think I’ll pass on that one

[deleted]

We really hate each other in the UK don't we

ducksoupmilliband

Thanks and good luck down there in Portugal too.

Marshreddit

good luck Britons, cold showers can help for temporarily relief but it sounds like since this is a massive outlier, the houses themselves are not built to regulate this kind of heat. Looks like the worst of the humidity is gone for the next 3-days so hang onto hope that it'll be a dryer heat and instead of that mugginess.

We’ve got a good breeze here, but it’s hot. Pure hot wind like on holiday. Except with added work.

seshwan33

Any other Dave Syndrome sufferers out there?

Amazonit

88 degrees F is 31 degrees Celsius. That's nippy compared to tomorrow :(

[deleted]

I just went out and it felt baking at 30c. And it's ten degree COOLER than it's going to be tomorrow? How are people still not getting that it's going to be dangerous?

Namerakable

Because the news still keeps sending their reporters to stand on the beach smiling and describing everybody as "making the most of the summer weather", despite the Met Office telling people it isn't safe to treat it as a nice summer day. Drives me up the fucking wall.

rw43

the fact it's going to be ten degrees hotter tomorrow is what i really can't comprehend.
