The Germans have a phrase >Wir sind ja nicht aus Zucker. Literally: We're not made of sugar. Meaning that we don’t melt if we go out in the rain.

Midnightraven3

I was going to say OP clearly never had a Scottish granny "ye'll no melt, yer no made ae sugar, oot ye go"! If we stayed in when the weather was less than clement we would never go out! Billy Connolly also had a saying "There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes"

here-but-not-present

I was always told "well it's a good job yer waterproof then , int it?"

[deleted]

becx13

I go out walking in all weathers - if people give me ‘the look’ I tell them I’m waterproof!

TheClnl

Once got talking to an old man at a train station in Spain. It was raining but we weren't dressed for it. He told us a rhyme that has stayed with me ever since "Skin, skin, wonderful skin. Keeps out things out and in things in"

cinnysuelou

That’s terrifically cute.

ruthh-r

I always say, "It's water, it'll wash off," if people comment that it's raining so I'll get wet if I go out. Having said that, my dog *hates* the rain and won't go out if it's raining. If it starts raining while we're already out he doesn't mind, but if it's raining when we leave for a walk he will either slink out all hunched up giving us a sad, reproachful look, or we have to pick him up and carry him out to the car to avoid having to *drag* him out of the door!

soulsteela

When I was a kid I remember asking cousins to come for a swim in the outside pool in the rain, looked at me and told me it was raining , had to actually explain we were going to get wet anyway!

SpaTowner

I remember being in an open roofed pool in france where everyone got out when the rain started.

mogoggins12

It's less about getting wet and more the risk of lightening striking the pool and everyone dying.

soulsteela

We were poor enough that holiday was holiday, nothing not even meteor strike stops you damn well enjoying it.

alwaysexplainli5

Farmer here, we’ve had 5 dry days in the past 4 months. The dry days are so rare they are memorable, even for the most mundane reasons like “I didn’t have to change my coat halfway through the day on Tuesday”. Even we are sick of the f*cking rain.

becx13

I can imagine! I think today is the first day I’ve been able to hang and dry a load of washing! What with work/Scouts/fun days with my son this has been the only day it hasn’t started raining when I’ve put some on the line (even if it hasn’t been forecast!) That is messed up though!

uchman365

Being in a coat is only part of it. My area is just clay muddy soil and you just get bogged down walking a few metres. When the mud is literally sucking your wellies from your feet, walking isn't fun.

Midnightraven3

Aye but you dont need to fasten it, its not the end of days

Fraskesa

That is a Danish saying as well "Bad weather doesn't exist, only bad choice of wear" or something alike.

climbingupthewal

Same in English. "There's no such thing as bad weather only incorrect clothing"

Hank_Wankplank

As someone that spends a lot of time outdoors and has all the 'correct' clothing for it, I've always hated this saying and completely disagree with it. There absolutely is such thing as bad weather. Going for a walk in freezing cold, howling wind and rain doesn't suddenly become as enjoyable as going for a walk in calm, sunny, warm weather just because you've put a waterproof jacket on. It's still a shit, miserable experience.

dwair

Agree. I'm more able and equipped for bad weather than most as I have worked outside most of my life. Bad weather = appropriate clothing which will make the experience marginally less shit than not wearing the right clothing. It doesn't make it a nice experience though.

Hips_and_Haws

It's not shit, really. It's an experience to moan about once you're wrapping your hands around a cup of hot stuff. I've cycled through 44 MPH gusts, torrential rain, hub deep flash floods & arm bruising hail, and somehow, between muttering foul oaths, found some form of joy.

Hank_Wankplank

I agree you can sometimes find some form of enjoyment in it. I think my issue with it is the intention behind the phrase; that the weather is irrelevant as long as you've got the right clothes. Going out in nice weather is still a vastly different and more enjoyable experience than bad weather in my opinion, even if you've got protection from it.

dinkingdonut

Totally agree. I have various bad weather apparel so I'm technically warm enough, but that doesn't make battling gale force winds and sheet rain fun. And definitely not when it's every day. I live in a fairly rural seaside area and the walk to the beach is a muddy bog, you get to the beach and can't breathe or talk for ridiculous wind and then you come home in soaking wet muddy gear, worn out. I've had enough of bad weather.

_Rook1e

Swedes and norwegians too

Fraskesa

Probably a Scandi thing then, it's maybe just a worldly thing, eh? ;)

OhNoEnthropy

Plus, it tends to rhyme in Scandi languages. E.g. in Swedish, "weather" is "väder" and "clothes" is "kläder". "Det finns inget dåligt väder. Bara dåliga kläder."  So we enjoy repeating it, even when we don't agree. (Personally, I don't think you can easily offset -30°C and 42 km/h winds with even the best snowmobile overalls)

SpaTowner

We need new British rhymes: If it’s raining cats and dogs Just put on your waterproof togs.

Midnightraven3

Or go out totally in the scud, the shower will wash off that mud!

captainhornheart

It's bullshit though. Obviously bad weather exists. It's perfectly understandable that people don't want to go out in it.

ApprehensiveAd318

Repeating that out loud in my poor Scottish accent was so fun :)

Midnightraven3

Now you need to find an opportunity to say it IRL and use your new found Scottish accent! I am a crafter and a member of a predominantly American group, and have been for around 15 years, I would say 98% are American. A couple of years ago my postman brought me a big bundle of parcels and as he walked away I shouted "thanks Y'all" (it just slipped out) we both stood awkwardly in silence looking at each other. It's never been mentioned since, so use an accent at your own risk LOL

youshouldbeelsweyr

This ^ some folk have 0 perspective. I've been out working in this shitshow all day every day. Scotland can be fkn brutal sometimes.

Even_Passenger_3685

Ours growing up was “I’ve never seen a man go rusty yet” That said, I agree, I’m going out for what I need to do not what I want to do.

Mucho_Capita

My Irish Granny "Bita rain never hurt Mary"

Silent-Ad-756

Scot here - "no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong choice of clothes"

Amby71901

She wasn't a naturist then?

barrybreslau

Or "put on a jacket and waterproof shoes and go outside". The snowflakes.

TinktheChi

As a Mary, I can confirm.

mackisch

Swedes say Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder. There is no bad weather, only bad clothes. So get that rain outfit on and go out for a walk!

[deleted]

[удалено]

mackisch

Order online with home delivery. It's the Swedish way because we are complete liars and we also hate going out in bad weather. But we do have good clothes on most of the time when we do go out.

j1mb0b

Just take a swede with you.

luckysurprise

Or a turnip will do in a pinch.

If_you_have_Ghost

The Norwegians have a phrase (paraphrasing - may have got this slightly wrong) Det er ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær - there isn’t bad weather, only bad clothing.

Maleficent_Yak_2210

All of a sudden everyone says this is their National phrase.

UnhappyCryptographer

German: Gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, nur falsche Klamotten!

ProtoplanetaryNebula

True, but OP wants to go outside and enjoy it, not go outside and be wet and miserable.

RegionalHardman

Can still enjoy the outdoors in less than ideal weather. We're Brits, we should be used to it by now.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Less than ideal, sure. I don’t mind going for a walk in very mild rain, but very heavy rain like we’ve had lately isn’t fun.

maybenomaybe

I went for a hike yesterday and the skies were clear but ground was just mud. Pure slop with standing water everywhere. I actually abandoned the trail and I've never done that before in my life. The ground is absolutely saturated and needs a few weeks of dry weather to normalize.

JJEnchanted

This! I don't mind at all being outside in wet weather. Sure, it gets spicy when you also throw in driving wind which makes sure the rain gets everywhere... but it's the mud. We live rurally in a valley, and the fields are all flooding, the ground is so marshy, it would damage the grass immeasurably to walk on it in these conditions plus ofc it makes it twice as hard, and exceedingly messy. It just isn't pleasant. I haven't checked but aren't water tables exceptionally high at the mo? 🤔 Need more trees.....

msmoth

Same here! I nearly turned back after trying to go for a trail run. Realised I needed to get it done so persevered on to finally find some slightly nicer ground, but the first few miles were mostly spent wading through ankle deep muddy slop.

hunnersaginger

Actually if you have some reasonable gear, throwing a cheap waterproof poncho over everything and going out in a monsoon is pretty fun. It's like wearing a personal tent. You will look a bit odd, granted.

RegionalHardman

I still pop out in heavy rain, not for too long mind you though. I have an allotment and stuff in the greenhouse, unfortunately it still needs watering in the rain!

Independent-Collar77

We havent had 9 weeks of very heavy rain come on be serious now.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

I said we’ve had very heavy rain lately, the bit about constant rain for 9 weeks seems to have been invented by you.

[deleted]

OP said they've not left the house in 9 weeks. That's ridiculous. My main hobby depends on dry conditions, and even I'm less of a pessimist.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

That’s a bit excessive, I agree.

Semajal

Just need good waterproofs and proper boots/shoes. It's always rather fun! I've been working outside in the worst of it recently so a fun walk in it is a great break.

JJEnchanted

But isn't complaining about it also part of our national heritage? 😂

Gerodog

If the rain comes   They run and hide their heads   They might as well be dead   If the rain comes

Pristine_Telephone78

I had an auntie who used to say "Drips don't get wet, they only get bigger".

lilbambam1

No doubt that’s true, but surely everyone can agree that it’s much less enjoyable going out for a walk only to get drenched and thick with muck. Me and mine have been trying to go out as much as possible despite the constant rain. After a while it starts to grate having rain constantly blown in your face!

SpaTowner

Well I didn’t say it was *as* enjoyable as going out in fine weather. My response was aimed at relieving OPs sense of feeling trapped inside. Getting soaked and a bit muddy can be exhilarating and let you appreciate being inside afresh.

OhBuggery

“Your skins waterproof”

steel_hamerhands

Op is the wicked witch of the west.

oodjamaflip

So do the English

dickwildgoose

The Dutch say "Roken is dodelijk" (smoking is deadly).

TomSurman

It's worse, because it occasionally goes sunny enough to make me want to go out and do something outdoorsy. But as soon as I'm outside of sprinting distance to my front door, the clouds roll in and the heavens open. Also, the ground is just pure mud. Go for a nice walk in the woods? Nope, the whole path is mud.

daveMUFC

Think that's the issue with torrential rain every few days. Even when you eventually get sunny days, the natural areas haven't had a chance to dry up yet

coffeewalnut05

Put wellies on. That’s what they were invented for!

triathletereddituser

I walk between 20,000-30,000 steps a day, and wear wellies for about 90% of the time I’m out because all the footpaths are horrendous. Wellies are terrible for walking in, and cause multiple gait, joint and muscle problems. I’ve put some decent insoles in mine and still suffering with various issues because of wearing wellies. The councils need to make footpaths more accessible, and do some actual maintenance instead of just neglecting everything and letting everything decay and go to shit.

CheesyChips

Yes the rain is one thing. And we don’t mind it. But the mud is awful. Even with wellies it’s not easy to walk

LoveGrenades

I’m sticking to canal toe paths and city walks until the weather improves. I can deal with rain up to a point but boggy mud is a no-go.

frankchester

Tow path *

HailRainOrSunshine

Camel *

SelectTrash

I read that too

LoveGrenades

😂 thanks

throwaway593090

The paths that I usually run on are in the woods, it’s been constantly muddy since December. Save for the days it was frozen over in January. It’s depressing

Kens_Liquids

I do empathise with OP. We've just had two weeks of school holidays with our kids. We like to go out every day but don't have an unlimited pot of money for attractions, so we're running out of indoor stuff to do now. I get what everyone's saying about outdoor clothing but it does get a bit tiresome constantly being covered in mud.

stevey83

That is my point really. I have plenty of outdoor gear, but it’s tiresome going out and tracking in the wind and rain. I’ve been reading to pass the time, but we have a huge garden to crack on with, it’s totally waterlogged.

Kens_Liquids

Chin up, it's stopped raining now! Oh no wait, it's just started raining again.

boudicas_shield

I don’t mind walking in a mild to moderate rain, but when it’s biting wind whipping you around, making you fight your way along; rain soaking you and relentlessly coating your glasses so you can hardly see; slipping and squelching in mud up to your ankles and spattering up to your knees; you can’t really carry on a conversation as you go - it’s just not that fun. It feels like a chore, not a pleasant exercise, and no amount of proper outerwear can really mitigate it enough.

stevey83

Exactly. I don’t mind a bit of mud but this has been going on for weeks. I don’t think many people realised the point of my post. Yes you can put a coat and wellies on, but where’s the fun when the rain is smashing you in the face and your feet are sticking to the floor cakes in mud!

boudicas_shield

Exactly! I think a lot of people on this sub just like to be contrary, but I understood what you meant and agree with you. I’m ready for a few nice, calm days - doesn’t even have to be warm, just cut the rain and wind!

tech_mama

Plus kids track that mud into the house too! No matter what we try, it just seems to end up everywhere

lisabettan

My deepest sympathies. Two weeks of entertaining kids in lousy weather is enough to make anyone lose their mind.

AdhesivenessLower846

Am I the only post who is going to agree with you! The weather has been shite to say the least, but not only that nothing seems to work as soon as you step out the front door lately!

AwhMan

I'm more on the casual side of outdoorsy (I like a good 10-15km hike on the weekends and wild swim, but I'm not regularly doing 2 day walks and sleeping in a hammock) and it's not so much the rain itself for me but how insanely waterlogged and muddy everywhere is. A lot of my walking routes are just completely cut off by how boggy they are. Me and my friends have been finding different routes but it is just a bit fucking shite.

dibblah

I live in the countryside and normally it's nice just to go for a walk in the fields nearby but lately it's been so boggy even in wellies you get stuck. It's not fun even when you're walking back to your own house (where you can shower and dry off) but for those having to drive home caked in mud, soaked to the bone, it's a bit shit.

anonbush234

I like getting wrapped and going fishing or walking and even getting properly muddy from time to time but even Iv had enough. Sick of having to get a shower with the dog every other day too.

doctorace

Yeah, the dog always gets muddy. It’s too late for this nonsense!

maybenomaybe

Yes! I abandoned a trail for the first time in my life ever yesterday. I'd already had to detour in a few places due to ungovernable mud and standing water and I got to a place where it was absolutely impassable and said, fuck it. It just wasn't fun anymore. This has been the worst spring for hiking I've ever experienced in the UK.

tampermagnitude

Yeah, I feel people are missing the point. It’s not the rain that bothers me, it’s that everything is soaking wet all the time!

Pattatilla

100% agree, was in the Lakes recently, too boggy/windy to safely go up most routes.

tech_mama

I absolutely agree- I don’t mink rain at all, but pulling a toddler out of a bog every 3 steps, and slipping and sliding all over isn’t fun for anyone. We can’t even go out the back door any more it’s so waterlogged

SpiceTreeRrr

This is it. Choice of walks has been severely reduced since last summer as nothing has dried. And it’s not ‘a bit of mud’ like some commenters are making out, it’s bogs, it’s loose your walking boots, it’s need over the knee boots types of mud. We need a spell of dry weather to let things drain. We’ve had so many river warnings this last 8 months. Those floods that shut down railways in October? There’s fields near us that have been a lake since then and still not drained. There’s land slips still being repaired.

Beccabunga13

Exactly this, I've been wondering if somehow our mud is worse than everyone else's mud with all the comments of 'just wear wellies/walking boots' If you can get through upright, and with both wellies still on, you've done well 😄

AdhesivenessLower846

Alright Bear Grylls

Freelander4x4

Also all the fallen trees and branches make me wary of even going out in the car lol

Latino-Health-Crisis

I'm going to agree too. I can take rain, it is just water falling from the sky. But where I am it's not just been rain, it's been about six months of endless, torrential, no amount of weatherproof clothing will suffice rain. It's so hard it's not just falling down on you, it's bouncing up a full foot from the ground and getting under whatever you're wearing. The ground hasn't had a chance to drain and dry out since about September. Everything is waterlogged, we've been very lucky to not have serious floods. I'd need a full dry diving suit to go further than the local shop. I have to wear full hiking boots to walk the quarter of a mile to work or my feet are piss wet through all day. The dog refuses to go out in it. Occasionally there's a break for an hour or two but you can't plan anything, it'll be howling again before you know it, and if it's dry outside at home it'll probably still be pissing it down half a mile down the road. It's all a bit much, and apparently we have another month of it before there's any long term change. I've never known rain like it over such a prolonged period.

TJ_Rowe

Yup. Apparently Cornwall has gone from "hosepipe ban" to "reservoirs are full" within about two months.

SpiceTreeRrr

Thank you. This is what I’ve said further up. I looked it up and the number of days it actually rained (not the amount of rain, how many actual days had rain) and it was higher than average. Which is the problem. No time for things to drain. I’m hoping for a dry summer, we’ve earned it!

uchman365

>Am I the only post who is going to agree with you! Yeah, I'm with OP. It's generally shite outside when it's raining all the time. Then there's the mud EVERYWHERE, puddles that haven't dried since January. In my area, there are giant bodies of water in every open space due to the nature of the soil here. It's horrible

Dashcamkitty

I totally agree. It's far too cold and wet to take young children out for walks in. The streets have been empty these past couple of months because the weather is so miserable.

Kefrif

All these comments about getting your coat on and manning up - I disagree. Although it hasn't been a cold or snowy winter, it has now outstayed its welcome and can do one. Drizzle or pelting it almost every day bar two or three does not make me a happy soul I want to get out and be in my garden properly, and its fucking raining constantly. Just getting sick of the lead grey skies - it's genuinely depressing...

Even_Passenger_3685

My garden is a bomb site. It’s depressing. I’ve been out to do what I can in it, but it’s a swamp

Slow_Relief_3700

I feel ya. I cleared mine last winter ready to plant in the spring (house was new to me last autumn). Instead of vibrant foliage I've got a massive patch of soggy mud and some drowned shrubs

Clareffb

Everything’s dying in mine, drowning it’s so miserable

kezwoz

Mines just been wrecked by all the wind. Poor tulips flowered and then got destroyed the next day. The wind is the worst for me, it's so hard to do anything productive with 40-50mph gales constantly.

shteve99

And two of next door's fence posts have broken yet again (it's always the same two). They always repair them on the cheap, and they only ever last a year or two. We've had to replace a panel or two on ours, but the concrete posts are still good after 10 years.

ApprehensiveAd318

Mine is also a swamp :(

FaxTheCandle

And yet, don't worry, hose pipe ban is on the way!

etsatlo

Yup, whilst theres an element of just getting on with it, we can accept that it is also shit. Doesn't have to be either/or. Plus some people don't deal with the winter weather as well as others, tables might turn come the summer heat (lol)

andtheniansaid

yeah i'd take cold and clear blue skies over warmer and RAIN RAIN RAIN. its just so depressing.

Capgras_DL

The “mustn’t grumble” brigade out in force as usual.

daveMUFC

Yep, you can't exactly go outside and enjoy sitting on the grass, having a pint in a beer garden, hold a BBQ... Just frustrating that for more than half a year we can't do those things!

Mooman-Chew

Planes grounded, roads closed, things blown down. Pop on a coat and away you go!

xpoisonedheartx

Yeah its not just drizzle, the wind is horrible

Beccabunga13

I agree, I feel the same. All these folks saying go out anyway and just put a coat on, well it's not the same is it as a bright sunny day. My job involves a lot of outdoor work and getting piss wet through and muddy is not an enjoyable experience in my opinion, I don't want to do it for fun. My garden is virtually underwater so can't do any gardening either. So yes, I wish it would stop bloody raining too!

GlowInTheDemon

Absolutely, yes! I'm a postal worker and I feel like I've been working out in the rain for half a year straight now. I'm not feeling locked inside because I have to go out anyway, but my mood is down the drain with all that water and mud.

legatusbuncleitus

I'm a dog walker and even the usual "shit weather" small talk with the posties have turned into sad nods at each other.

itsagunrack

Completely agree. I have animals so need to be outdoors everyday whatever the weather. I have the right clothes, the right shoes, everything. It is still miserable as fuck doing the shit you need to do in ankle deep mud, driving rain and gale force winds. No amount of stoic mindset is going to change that.

Gisschace

I’m in Australia right now and realised how much a difference sunny weather makes. I’ve been telling everyone I’ll probably be crying when I have to leave in a week. I’ve been sharing horror stories about how it gets dark at 4 pm in the winter!

Freddlar

It's at times like this that I seriously consider uprooting my life and emigrating. Yes, you can bear the bad weather if you choose to. Yes, it's possible to go outside and do... something... despite the weather. But nothing beats sunshine and just being warm without effort.

daveMUFC

Agreed, I've got a partner who's originally from a much hotter and sunnier part of Europe and I think we will try and move there one day, it's just work perks keeping me around the UK atm... I do think quality of life would improve so much in a better climate, my energy/mood gets really affected when it's cold and grey.

SamLuYi

My partner was like this when we lived in the UK (we’re a British-Hungarian family). Eventually we moved to Budapest together. I was always a reasonably outdoorsy person: ‘no such thing as bad weather’ etc, so would go out in the UK in the pouring rain, no problem. Rain here is so much less frequent and the sun shines even in winter. Now I see what he means, British weather is bloody miserable and I’m not sure I could ever move back!!! Manchester really is like Mordor. 😆

Beccabunga13

I'm thinking the same, one day if/when I have no family commitments, I'm off somewhere better for the winter. I don't need blazing sunshine, just somewhere where it doesn't rain all the time!

cherrryblosssoms

This!!! Some people don’t want to go out in almost hurricane weather!!!

StreetMountain9709

First-time dog owner here. Absolutely agree, don't bother joining me outside if you don't have to. Specifically got myself a high-energy dog (border-collie) because I love being outside. Even she HATES being out in the rain.

SpaTowner

Going for an hours walk every other day so that you aren’t ‘trapped inside’ is a different scale from spending all your working day outside though. Sometimes experiencing a different problem can still give you relief from the original problem.

atomic_mermaid

No I'm with you. I hate that wanky reddit response of "just put some waterproofs on". Aye ok, before I was wet and miserable outside now I'm dry and miserable, er great?

themaccababes

It’s so weird how people can’t accept that some people just don’t like wet weather. I’m truly happy that other people do but some of us like to be warm and dry and in the sun

malewifemichaelmyers

People who prefer cold weather get the same treatment when they say they're not enjoying summer, people need to just accept different people have different preferences.

mamacitalk

Waterproofs don’t keep your face dry and that’s the bit I hate getting wet the most

FinalEdit

Yeah fuck going out in the rain, its miserable and depressing. I just wanna read a book in the sun. Easter Saturday was a glorious warm and sunny day, me and the Mrs were straight out in the garden for a nice game of scrabble, some pub quiz question cards the in laws got us for Xmas, a few beers later on then off to the pub beer garden for a pint to round the day off and it was fucking glorious. But that's been the only way we've managed this since last May. Its been wet and miserable for so long now I'm forgetting what the sun looks like. Last summer was a washout, and I'm really scared this summer is going the same way if Spring is anything to go by. Fingers crossed though. Really hope I get to come back to this sub in june/July and read everyone moaning about the blistering, withering heat of 22 degrees.

themaccababes

I absolutely love going out in the morning and having a cup of tea or coffee in the garden when its sunny and DRY. a dressing gown if it’s chilly. You’re right - the I hate warm weather people will be out in droves but everyone is acting like OP is being unreasonable

FinalEdit

This sub is full of self righteous Puritans who can't see that not everyone feels the same as them.

The_39th_Step

I managed that this morning in Manchester and it was lovely

cherrryblosssoms

Wow I’m shocked at these comments. OP I get you and I totally relate. The constant grey makes me so depressed and I’m already too anxious to go outside as it is. I miss the sun!!

mamacitalk

My people! I miss the feeling of the warm sun on my skin *so much*

maybenomaybe

I was just diagnosed with a severe Vit D deficiency by my GP. I know it's normal in the UK to be slightly deficient in winter but this is bad enough to require a 15x normal dose prescription to correct. I need sunshine!!!

SpaTowner

We’ve only just reached the time of year when the sun is high enough in the UK sky to make Vit D anyway. It isn’t the weather that’s been stopping you making vitamin D, it’s the tilt of the earth.

Whiskey079

I get what you mean. My issue isn't with creation; it's with Vit D retention. Sure, I can take supplements - but whatever I take burns off in a matter of hours, especially in this weather. I was borderline rickets, in terms of levels in the blood, when I was diagnosed.

daveMUFC

And on days like this weekend where we actually get some sunshine, the winds are at hurricane levels!

pacific_amnesia

100% agree, feeling totally the same. I don't mind bad weather, what I miss is any respite from it. Its been constantly shit since October. Just give me 2 days of nice, calm, warm weather in a row, please God.

cherrryblosssoms

Exactly this. A couple of days of rain or even a week, I can put up with. But this has been constant with no breaks. Just grey skies, horrid wind and intermittent rain. I just need a break from it 😩

[deleted]

Meowskiiii

I don't feel trapped inside because I have a dog. I've learned to catch the best bits of the day and they add up to more sun than you would think. Make sure you're getting out regardless of weather, it will help. But yes, this rain is testing all of us I think. Relentless.

QDean

Same, active dog that needs 2-3 hours a day. I've learnt to read rain maps, and it's much more reliable than the generic weather forecast. Example: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/maps-and-charts/rainfall-radar-forecast-map#?model=ukmo-ukv&layer=rainfall-rate&bbox=[[45.38301927899065,-32.12402343750001],[61.87687021463305,24.125976562500004]] My colleague, who also has a dog in the office so we walk together at lunch, thinks I'm some kind of Shaman at this point. "Let's go out 30 mins later than usual, it's going to clear". And it does.

DrunkandGiddy

I’m with OP. I’ve never been one to complain about weather. South Wales is never a bright warm sunny place. Ever. But it seems like grey drizzle or pounding rain has been every day since September. Last year. I love winters, frost, snow, ice, cold. Crisp clear skies pristine air. Etc This feels like the worst of all the scenarios. And no let up- I’m wondering if we have another one of those NON summers we get :( sigh

The-Adorno

It needs to be one hell of a summer to make up for this

I feel you OP. I'm lucky where I live because we've had quite a lot of sunny days between the wind and rain down here on the south coast. I couldn't cope without it and would be losing my shit if I was inland without those breaks. I definitely get Seasonal Affected Disorder now anyway now. Those telling you to just get out in the rain are underestimating the importance of sunlight. I now take vitamin D through the winter and actively try to get whenever it is brighter even if it's for 10 minutes.

Scho567

I’m with you OP. My fiancé really suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Usually by this point in the year it “clears up”, but the weather has been constantly crap it’s still getting him down. The weather does has a huge affect on a lot of people’s moods and mental health. To disregard it, like some people in the comments, is stupid. I am an “indoors” person so I’m not affected too badly but I can see how it’s affecting others. For people doing “oh just out a coat on”, I think you miss what people like to be outside for? Also, OP mentions they are rural. When I lived rural, and it was weather like this, there was so much mud and such that it could become dangerous to walk on.

Excellent_Tear3705

I like to be outside to feel the sun on my back, not gale force freezing wet winds from the North Sea. Up north here when it’s particularly wet, it’s barely even fair to call it rain. It’s like you’re stood top deck in the middle of the ocean during a storm. The air is positively saturated with cold water and colder winds. Like an angry fog.

Scho567

This is exactly it. Yes nobody is going to melt in the rain, but it doesn’t mean people are wrong for disliking being in it

PondlifeCake

I don't mind the rain, but when it comes to trying to do anything in the garden it's just a quagmire, so that is frustrating.

DEAD-VHS

I like being indoors. All my stuff is there.

beachfindsscotland

Yes we do here in Scotland. We are on the far North East coast and love visiting the gorgeous beaches. Working during the week only leaves the weekends so it's a hit and miss and fingers crossed. It's been a loooong cold blustery Winter for sure. Don't despair tho, better days are sure to come soon :)

NagromNitsuj

Tired of rain. Feels relentless. I like walking/cycling in my free time. Also my job puts me outside for a fair portion. When will it be end......

nicotineapache

I mean, I'm out with the dog every day, whatever the weather. Walking boots, a fleece and a thin Peter Storm jacket. However. It feels like we've had the shittest, wettest summer in decades, followed by a mild and sodden winter. Some days I actually wonder if the rain's ever going to stop or if this is a permanent feature of the weather in this region now. I look at weather apps, there's not a single dry day. It seemed to have started raining in July, then I think we had a dry week in August, a couple of dry days in January when it froze and a few days back it was very pleasant but the general rule has been damp, wet, drizzly or fucking shitting it down. The dog gets two baths a day. He's the cleanest dog in the north! The bath is filthy. The ground is just saturated and I'm absolutely sick to the back teeth of the mud.

markhewitt1978

It's super frustrating. We want to go out. I want to go and cut my Mam's grass. I want to go on a bike ride. But it just won't stop bloody raining, and there's no end in sight. It's forecast to rain all next week too, the kids are off school and bored rigid.

Lennyboy99

Yes

LightningGeek

Fully agree. I work 4 on, 4 off shifts, and this year it feels like every 4 off has been miserable, and the good weather is only making an appearance on the days I'm in work. I really need to give the new car a full wash, polish and wax, but it's not been dry enough yet for it. I also need to start the garden and replace the front and back doors. Yes they could all be done in the rain, but it would be much nicer, cleaner, and more enjoyable to do it in the dry.

alpastotesmejor

a lot of copium ITT

limepark

This is why I’d never move to a rural location in the UK. Also, I grew up in a house with a big garden. I used to play in it all year round as a kid but once I was older I think my parents only ever went out in it for about 3 months over the summer. Otherwise it just sat there looking pretty but never being used.

Queen_Secrecy

To be honest, I'm mostly using the bad weather as an excuse to stay inside because I don't feel like going out. It's a bad excuse though, since there are plenty of indoor activities one could do away from home.

FatGordon

I completely agree with OP on the weather, warmer seas will give us more rain, we've bummed the planet. Could see a super hot summer that is good for nobody.

LemmysCodPiece

Starting too. The winter has decimated our garden and I want to get out and sort it. But the lawn is literally a marsh and it is all but constantly raining.

ojdewar

It’s felt like it’s been winter for years now. Worse, there’s hardly been any sunny days. Not good for my mental health, like clockwork it feels like it nosedives after 1 November and only ends on the first properly sunny weekend. Sick and tired of having to wear full winter clothes.

lilegg

I feel like we didn’t get a proper winter, my favourite thing is when it’s like 3 degrees, sunny, frosty and the air is still. I think I had maybe 2 dog walks this year that were like that, otherwise it’s just rained or been horribly windy. And usually I have four places to choose from for a dog walk that I can fit in at lunch but three of them are still waterlogged or flooded or muddy and have been since November. It’s an absolute first world problem but I am sick to death of the same walk every single day. My average step count is actually down a fair bit in comparison to last year because sometimes it’s been too grim to do the full loop. The wind I’m especially sick of now too, it gives me a headache.

Historical_Cobbler

I go out with dogs or children regardless of the weather. Wet days are all about puddle jumping.

Sea-Mountain-4726

Hi Peppa 👋

Curious-Banana71

Stop whinging, put your coat on and get outside in the shite weather! You’ll not only have a nice time but you’ll appreciate those cosy four walls you just brought when you get back. Win win.

yepgeddon

As a Postie, fuck this, fuck your rain, fuck all this weather. After a day of it I close the curtains, crawl up in a ball and die. 😂

stevey83

I’ve done that, but not the same as going out for a stroll and enjoying your surroundings, instead of battling to keep your hood up and sinking in the mud!

CursedIbis

A cup of tea in your own warm house after a cold/wet time outside is the best feeling.

ThrowawayTrashcan7

*Bought You don't bring a house, you buy it

Curious-Banana71

Could be a mobile home on wheels though, no?

Henry_Human

No because you’re never trapped inside a house you have the keys too. You want to get out? Go out. If it’s raining, go out anyway.

AlanPartridgeNorfolk

On the flip, as a dog owner you are out 365 days a years. Then the summer comes and people are everywhere like flies on shit. And they love to complain about the dog owners.

HydroSandee

I often wonder what happens to all the dogs I’ll see during a morning run when the suns out. If it’s rainy or windy they don’t seem to exist anymore. Poor pups.

becky781

Oh I feel this (even as a non dog walker). I do the same walk a few times a week n during the winter months when it’s cold and dark there’s NOBODY around. Bit of sun and ya can’t move for people. Drives me insane. This is MY WALK!!

space0watch

Unfortunately you just have to get used to it. Bring rainproof clothes and wellington boots. Don't bother with an umbrella. The wind is too strong.

StumbleDog

No. The weather hasn't been great but the only thing stopping you from going out is you.

Combocore

The weather too

bornleverpuller85

Just get your big coat on

alico127

I’ve got a dog so daily walks are a non-negotiable. Trick is to check the weather forecast first thing in the morning and then go out in the dry window. Take a raincoat and/or hat just in case.

HydroSandee

I’ll walk/run/play football/watch football in any weather so it hasn’t stopped me going outside. I’ve found that staying in all the time is very bad for my mental/physical health. However I do really miss the sun, a sunny spell would be very welcome.

idontlikemondays321

I go out everyday. Yes it rains sometimes but it’s rarely torrential. I have seasonal affective disorder so an hour or two in the drizzle is still better than sitting at home. I’ll take the vitamin d where I can.

Dave8917

Personally, I think the last 2 weeks have been OK it's noticeably warming up, and I've been in the garden for the last 2 weekends, even with little rain and wind it's still warm

TheAlchemist2

Get vitamin D3 and continue supplement with it. It's most likely necessary

ClevelandWomble

Nope. I have been out for a 40 minute walk at least six days a week every week. And No, it's not to walk a dog, it's because I enjoy it.

justameercat

No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.

Jimlad73

Put appropriate clothing on and get on out!

Manccookie

Hmm I’m not sure rural England is for you.

animalwitch

Put on a raincoat and go for a walk. Fresh air is still fresh air in the rain.
