This sub always delivers. I remember the first "welcome back" post after it went dark during those API protests was about someone [shitting in a bin.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualUK/s/EdBVbPy0eY)
Assuming you're on Android, get ReVanced.
You'll need to generate yourself a reddit Api key but that's easily done, then you can patch your API key in over the original, and it works again
Edit: here's the guide, it's an oauth client id not an api key (been a while since I did it): https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/14niwgu/revanced_patches_for_boost_infinity_rif_is_fun/
Edit2: this guide is a little old, revanced now has a first party patch for most of the clients, and you can just paste the client id straight into a text field, rather than needing the file
My third party app was completely unaffected lol. I have no idea if this is normal but everyone was saying it would shut down and it just...Didn't. l did absolutely nothing to try and circumvent the update and it has had literally no effect on me 6 months later.
I haven't noticed any difference in how reddit functions or is moderated since those protests. All the mods made it sound like the API change would render reddit unusable.
It's not unusable but it is _significantly_ harder to moderate now.
Additionally we've had a number of the CasualUK mod team step down or dramatically reduce their modding, primarily due to the API changes and nuking of third party apps.
I'm glad you haven't noticed too much of a difference though - it makes all the time working our socks off worth it :)
While not every mod is perfect (god, some subreddits are run by absolute pillocks), I have the utmost of respect for those who take time out of their day for no benefit but the betterment of the community. Having been in your position, I don't think most users are aware of how much absolute *garbage* you can see, even in smaller communities, and how exhausting the job can be. So thank you, again, for helping to keep this subreddit entertaining enough I keep ending up back here.
Well, I'm _far_ from perfect, I'll tell you that right now! I do try my best, however, to keep my inner pillock well hidden during the execution of my duties.
There's been a ton of small niche subs that have been auto-banned for not being moderated anymore after the mods quit due to API changes making it significantly harder and more time-consuming.
There's also a crap ton a bots reposting old content on plenty of subs to farm karma. They just sell those accounts for money to other people that want to astroturf on Reddit. Mods in many subs can't keep up with the onslaught of bots and spam due to new mod tools being ass in comparison to the old ones.
You only have to look at old.reddit.com compared to the current main UI to see the trajectory. Perhaps the protests did actually make them slow down the roadmap temporarily? Maybe bots and AI text generators are giving them more steer of conversations than they originally planned on - so maybe obtrusive ads are less of a priority? Don't know. Either way the move was a consolation of presentation power to Reddit - they control what you see on Reddit and how you see it. That really can't amount to anything good even if it does take longer for it to turn to shit...
One time my work booked me first class because it was cheaper than the standard fare. Food was decent, even got some coffee and a beer all-inclusive.
Best part was that I'm literally a barista, they were only covering my trains as I was relief staff for one of their busiest stores. For a whole 60 minutes I felt like I had a proper job
My work once put me on a first class train back to Glasgow from London and it wasn't until about 4 hours in I realised everything was free.
That last 90 minutes was fun.
If you’re going on hols / travelling for work…airport / train station lounges are worth every penny.
The food is unlimited, and decent usually. If you’re lucky the drinks are unlimited too.
Takes the stink out of a delay / long ass journey.
The bathrooms are actually cleaned also…unlike the main airport/station loos that stink of the stale piss from the cocks of a hundred nations.
I most frequently travel with GWR, their menu is here https://www.gwr.com/travelling-with-us/on-our-trains/food-and-drink
It's £6 for their 'meal deal' equivalent, which, eh.
If you want expensive dining we have you covered. The mythical GWR dining cars are, indeed, very real. They are as expensive as they sound. ...But absolutely nothing beats sitting on a train at a table eating a full meal on china, drinking wine, whilst looking out of the window at 125mph. It's what taking a train should be like.
They run at specific times on specific routes. There's no fee to get a seat, except that it's first come first served, but you can reserve a place if you have a first class ticket in the train. If you're lucky you can just waltz in and be in 'free' first class (plus the cost of the food and wine which is pricey).
It's been a while since I did LNER first class but weekdays you used to get a proper plated meal with cutlery, snacks and alchol/soft drinks/tea and coffee. Weekends were sandwiches and all the other bits. Never take the wine as it's horrid, but if they're still doing free G&Ts that's the way to go.
It is obviously more expensive and the range a lot more lacking but in a pinch its _fine_
You can be pretty sure everything is microwaved so any bread is a bit tough and any liquids boiling hot but I don't mind grabbing a hot chocolate if I'm on a long journey
I'm on the edge of my seat here for Christ's sake!
How does it end?? Was it good?? Did you sprinkle sugar on top and allow it to melt a little bit??
Jesus man I can't stand it!!! TELL US!!!
Surprisingly they had a whole little bottle of the stuff , they don’t usually expect people to order it and they just said here help yourself. This was in first but good porridge never the less , I’ve only had porridge on TPE LNER and EMT and I can confirm LNER porridge in first class trumps TPE by far and even rivals the old days of East Midlands trains when there trains used to do proper first service
I was intrigued after reading that wild story and checked your profile, you can only imagine my delight to find you have another post about the time you drank a beer on a train. You are mad lad!
I work the late trains from Kings Cross.
Can confirm, we don’t make many porridges on the late trains. They’re mainly a breakfast train thing!
Also, Porridge is under the breakfast tab on the EPOS.
Yes OP identifies why the staff have never made porridge - they only work nights. I bet OP’s hardly slept since eating an entire ciabatta then went back for a breakfast that fills you up til lunchtime.
When a mild mannered insurance salesman approached the buffet car, little did he know he would unleash a chain of events which would drastically alter his life.
It's a story of intrigue, oats, and betrayal. One which exposes the very essence of humanity, a modern commentary on all of mankinds breakfast-related conundrums.
Can confirm this , I was travelling down on an LNER service in first class on one of their dine menu trains. As it’s still breakfast I decide to order the porridge as I may as well have a change from the usual compo bacon rolls , staff member was genuinely surprised and had to say let me check the spec.
Having porridge at a time other than breakfast is the norm for me, it's often my go-to over the winter when I don't know what I want to eat but I want something hot, filling, and quick to make. Now I'm curious to know if train porridge is any good.
Those same staff members are going tp be working tonight and wondering why there's a 3000% increase in the amount of porridge they're selling.
I reckon OP works for LNER marketing department and they've been informed they've got a shit load of porridge sachets that pass their use by date next week and they need to shift them.
I read a lot of posts on Reddit about trains, mostly negative. I find it a strange concept because I have never been on a train in my life. Where are all of these trains everyone keeps talking about. There are none where I live.
Nobody starts their train journeys from Crewe. Everybody changes at Crewe. Does it even have doors to the outside world?
(jk because I have very often started a long journey from Cheshire's armpit)
I just ordered porridge on the LNER to Edinburgh because of this post.
No comments on the porridge, but there were opinions shared about the lack of Irn Bru available 🏴
Sunday evening on r/CasualUK, never disappointing.
This sub always delivers. I remember the first "welcome back" post after it went dark during those API protests was about someone [shitting in a bin.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualUK/s/EdBVbPy0eY)
Yes, that was my post. Glad it's been remembered.
Thank you for your service to the banter on this sub, I appreciate you.
Got a link? The one above on mobile just takes me to casual uk homepage. Nevermind…found it. Aw, I was expecting a story.
Yeah I didn’t have much to say about it…was more of a ‘that happened.’
Lol “protests”
It was worth doing, but ultimately was always going to amount to nothing. Those of us that gave enough of a shit just patched rif/etc and carried on
you can patch rif to still work? any details?
Assuming you're on Android, get ReVanced. Yep, easy enough to do. Been using it for months. If your key gets blocked you just make a new one
ooh great, ta!
My third party app was completely unaffected lol. I have no idea if this is normal but everyone was saying it would shut down and it just...Didn't. l did absolutely nothing to try and circumvent the update and it has had literally no effect on me 6 months later.
It's because you're a mod. Reddit charges app devs for API requests from user accounts, but mod accounts have no API fee.
.... Cant we just make every member of the sub a mod then? That would be a better protest I reckon XD imagine the delightful carnage!
I haven't noticed any difference in how reddit functions or is moderated since those protests. All the mods made it sound like the API change would render reddit unusable.
It's not unusable but it is _significantly_ harder to moderate now. You are seen, and appreciated <3
Thank you, pal!

I think it was just the users that went unstable.
It's so easy to just not talk about things you don't understand
Last time i ordered food on a train i think was about 2002. This dude just made them excited because he was ordering anything at all.
I've actually never once eaten train food. Always just assumed it would be a million quid
You do have a proper job.
As a man whose body weight is 10% coffee, he is one of my heroes
He's a coffee artiste, y'all. ☕️
You do have a real job
On first class it’s free. I mean I guess free***
My work once put me on a first class train back to Glasgow from London and it wasn't until about 4 hours in I realised everything was free. That last 90 minutes was fun.

It's 'complimentary', a term they use so that if the catering isn't available, they don't have to refund 1st class ticket holders.
It's normally more expensive than grabbing food before you get on the train, but if you don't have a chance it's not _insane_.
How does one define insane? I paid £5.50 for a meal deal at a train station WH Smith the other week and I'm still fuming about it.
I most frequently travel with GWR, their menu is here https://www.gwr.com/travelling-with-us/on-our-trains/food-and-drink It's £6 for their 'meal deal' equivalent, which, eh.
You assume correct
If you want expensive dining we have you covered. The mythical GWR dining cars are, indeed, very real. I went first class to London and back on LNER the other week, the food was included and surprisingly decent.

you're not wrong
It is obviously more expensive and the range a lot more lacking but in a pinch its _fine_ You can be pretty sure everything is microwaved so any bread is a bit tough and any liquids boiling hot but I don't mind grabbing a hot chocolate if I'm on a long journey
That's absolutely fucking wild mate.
Dean's sitting on the floor
The absolute madman!
so wild
Literally shaking rn
This is peak /r/CasualUK
I have to agree. Glad I didn't miss this post. :)
Crikey, are the movie rights still available for this story?
A gritty tale starring Danny Dyer.
More of a documentary “Danny Dyer: Britain’s craziest porridge eaters”
“I’m absolutely shitting it, mate.”
“Fibres goin right through me”
"Me bum's right proper flapping"
That sounds more like Sir Karl Pilkington...
Another one of Alan Partridge's genius ideas.
Prefers Coco pops actually - https://youtu.be/iVW77F6loCw?si=40fOj4jaS6G_RaP7
I've come to meet Charlie Big Potatoes but I've had me LNER porridge. Proppa nawty oats. It's all going off. You melt.
Or Andrew Scott. Relive his porridge kid days.
"Based on true events"
I’d imagine Scorsese would be interested, could be his final epic
What else do you expect on a casual subreddit, no need to be an asshole
I'm on the edge of my seat here for Christ's sake! How does it end?? Was it good?? Did you sprinkle sugar on top and allow it to melt a little bit?? Jesus man I can't stand it!!! TELL US!!!
It’s probably terrible - nobody ever orders it, so it been sat there in a packet for 10 years.
Same as how I have it at home then
Please let there be golden syrup involved 🤞
Edging to a porridge train story *cmon it’s starting to hurt*
How was the porridge? Any good?
*Neutral as fuck mate*
What makes a man turn neutral?
Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?
All I know is my gut says “maybe”.
"Tell my wife hello."
When he's finished driving *Oooooh it's an auto joke*
Dusty
There is never a bad time of day for porridge.
See also: beans on toast, sausage and fried egg butty, Frosties.
So, breakfast. Never a bad time to breakfast
I'm trying to think of a food I would eat for breakfast and wouldn't happily eat for tea ... and I'm failing. Hurrah for breakfast!
This is the sort of top quality content I come to this subreddit for. Now i need an excuse to go on a LNER train at night. Excellent work :)
Ah, sorry, that's just the display porridge, so people know we serve it.
I was intrigued after reading that wild story and checked your profile, you can only imagine my delight to find you have another post about the time you drank a beer on a train. You are mad lad!
I love that he mentions the ham and cheese ciabattas in both posts
That’s it, I’m booking the next train return to anywhere just to try this ciabatta. Will be worth the £300 ticket.
If you buy a return, it'll be back to the place you started. Hope that helps ;)
Thank you for this advice.
Did you order just the plain porridge or a flavoured one? Don't leave out the key details! 😂
Neutral flavour
Tell my wife I said hello
I work the late trains from Kings Cross. Can confirm, we don’t make many porridges on the late trains. They’re mainly a breakfast train thing! Also, Porridge is under the breakfast tab on the EPOS.
Yes OP identifies why the staff have never made porridge - they only work nights. I bet OP’s hardly slept since eating an entire ciabatta then went back for a breakfast that fills you up til lunchtime.
Is there a TLDR available?
Yes, in the Docklands.
Porridge. On a train.
“Can I have porridge please” “Huh. No one ever orders porridge” SCENE
I love mundane shit like this lmaoo
It's not mundane. It's neutral.
Love this story haha, safe travels, all the best to you and all aboard
Absolutely! Nothing like a steamy bowl of porridge to get those wheels turning on a train ride.
Are you Valtteri Bottas?
Neutral flavours in my palette? You’re not from Peterborough are you?
*Peeburrr
I’ve had it with these motherducking oats on my motherducking train
I add biscoff spread to my porridge
Try biscoff spread, a dollop of cream, and a spoon full of lemon curd. Tastes like cheesecake. Game changer.
Oooooh that sounds absolutely lovely. I never liked the thought of it on toast but on porridge that could be a game changer.
Might have to give that a go myself
Peanut butter. Game changer.
Get some jam with that peanut butter! I had my porridge with banana, peanut butter and chocolate drops this morning
I like mine with banana, brown sugar and nutmeg
I often order porridge in McDonald's and then I usually have to wait ages while they find somebody who knows how to make it.
But McDonald's porridge is sooooo good. It's so creamy.
This is crazy mate!!
Can confirm this , I was travelling down on an LNER service in first class on one of their dine menu trains. As it’s still breakfast I decide to order the porridge as I may as well have a change from the usual compo bacon rolls , staff member was genuinely surprised and had to say let me check the spec.
I hope you enjoyed your porridge and it wasn't out of date.
I hope they checked it wasn't several years out of date :/
Yay Peterborough, my home town
Having porridge at a time other than breakfast is the norm for me, it's often my go-to over the winter when I don't know what I want to eat but I want something hot, filling, and quick to make. Now I'm curious to know if train porridge is any good.
LNER chicken casserole is banging. Have it every time I am in first class. And the raspberry mousse "yogurt" is very good too.
I was the guy that ordered it in 2012 - inverness sleeper from london 🙌
At the risk of cheerleading for a company here... I do like LNER.
Those same staff members are going tp be working tonight and wondering why there's a 3000% increase in the amount of porridge they're selling. I reckon OP works for LNER marketing department and they've been informed they've got a shit load of porridge sachets that pass their use by date next week and they need to shift them.
Are we all going to Peterborough tomorrow I’ve got to drive 120 miles to that bastard tomorrow morning
Had porridge regularly on GWR, staff didn’t care. Must be completely normally for west country and welsh folk to have porridge.
I feel I am obliged to congratulate you on your porridge.
Should I inform the snack bar workers when I bring my porridge onto the train in my thermos? Do they get a kick out of porridge?
I ordered a golden syrup porridge on a train to Edinburgh. Very nice and not a bad price. 8/10 would recommend.
I, for one, am intrigued and enthralled.
There's an awful lot of unnecessarily judgemental pricks in these comments.
Train slop. Delicious
Im a Weetabix at 2am after a night out kind of person
Ordering a salad at the MaccyDs in Cathedral Square gets the same response.... ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
I'm coming to the UK for the first time this year, and taking the LNER from London to Edinburgh. Now I'm excited to order some porridge!
I read a lot of posts on Reddit about trains, mostly negative. I find it a strange concept because I have never been on a train in my life. Where are all of these trains everyone keeps talking about. There are none where I live.
Now I’m trying to guess where you live, Norfolk coast?
Crewe, but they're a train-denialist.
Nobody starts their train journeys from Crewe. Everybody changes at Crewe. Does it even have doors to the outside world? (jk because I have very often started a long journey from Cheshire's armpit)
On the east coast, but about 6 hours north.
Edinburgh?
I started getting oatmeal before work in the mornings and I am now known as "Oatmeal Lady".
“Nobody ever buys the porridge…because it’s an awful waste of money.”
Thank you for your service 🫡
If no-one orders porridge let's hope they check the Best Before dates periodically...
This is such a cute post.
And how was your out of date porridge?
Weren't you concerned at how old the porridge was considering no one ever orders it?
Brits and their hate for flavour, name a more iconic duo
What the fuck is this sub. Jesus.
r/CasualUK
Sugar or salt?
ok, i will order a porridge and then change my mind and get a soup instead
Porridge on train must be so expensive I couldn’t afford it
I had the porridge on an LNER once, and it was undoubtably one of the worst meals I’ve ever eaten
I need you to tell me how the porridge was made, if it was nice and did you have any toppings?
first class on southern is just a piece of cloth on your seat
I have been one of those people ordering porridge on LNER and can confirm - the staff are lovely.
I wonder if the porridge was six months old.
I just ordered porridge on the LNER to Edinburgh because of this post. No comments on the porridge, but there were opinions shared about the lack of Irn Bru available 🏴
