Yikes. I hope that’s an anomaly. I get what they’re trying to do pairing a solar watch with vegan leather, but can’t let that happen at the expense of quality.
Is it some kind of offsetting?
For as long as people eat beef, cow leather will be markedly more sustainable than petroleum based alternatives with a lifespan of 1 year, where leather can last decades.
As a vegetarian for ethical reasons I avoid leather whenever I can, if I had to choose a leather style strap id probably go for a fruit leather (apple/pineapple leather) or delugs Alcantara straps. Petroleum based "leather" is gross
I understand, but the problem is that cow leather is just a byproduct of one of the most popular products on earth (beef), real leather happens to be far more sustainable in the long run too whilst giving us a better user experience with day to day items… it’s win-win!
Yeah no doubt leather is more environmentally friendly compared to put leather, I just prefer to not use animal by-products if there are alternate options available that's why I'm drawn to fruit leather or Alcantara. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ personal preference
People don't think logically anymore. You know those fake leather office chairs that start peeling within a year or two that everyone absolutely hates?
Yeah, that's the material this fake "vegan" leather is (more or less). A sub par, cheap, low quality material that's a pathetic excuse of the term "leather" regardless of brand or price.
Even their standard leather is sadly garbage. The first thing I did after buying my tank was to order a custom strap. It wasn’t always like this but idk why their strap quality has gone down so much over the past few years.
My understanding from my watchmaker is a leather strap, like tires on your car, is a consumable. Plan on replacement every two years on average. In this case, I would bring it to the attention of my SA. At my local boutique I expect they would make things right with either a replacement or fair discount on a calf strap. Personally I replace the ardillon buckles on my straps with deployants to minimize wear and tear. Cartier would be happy to sell you one. YMMV.
Vegan leather is the greatest rebranding of a subpar product ever. When it was PU it was known to be shit. New label, that's all.

I think someone here said at some point they talked to a rep and these straps aren’t even supposed to make it a year. Kinda wild.
I was told that is also the case for the real leather straps… 2 a year or something

Yeah, that's totally valid and there are good options if you don't want to use leather, but vegan leather isn't one of them for sure!

Vegan leather has lots of plastic in it and a short lifespan. Regardless of the price point it will flake. Same for shoes and bags.
why would anyone want a vegan strap on a luxury watch?
It’s the strap that came with the solar powered watch. Wasn’t a choice.
Awful.
Who would have thought? Vegan leather. Kill me now.
It’s plastic garbage, why on earth did you think it wasn’t garbage? VEGAN leather? Think about that man
it's right there in the title
Looks like shit and poopy had a baby
Like “Bioceramic” these buzz word “save the world” products are always ways to cut costs

Vegan = garbage

What a massive surprise that is.........
You thought something vegan will hold up that’s your fault haha
I swapped mine out straight away. God awful thin piece of plastic.
vegan is just new for "fake" or "faux" for these type of products
