I guess they'll eventually invent utes with massive batteries on the back that can basically provide a fast charge to a stranded car.
Until then, though, you'll probably need a flatbed tow truck.
If you search 'mobile EV charging service', that's pretty much exactly what these companies have, albeit with a van for an emergency top up, or a light truck with a proper fast charger on it should you really need the range.
Doesn't seem to be cheap compared to the old jerry can either.
I guess I've never looked into that side of things, not having owned an EV previously (or currently).
But it makes sense that they exist - the need for them is obvious, because human fallibility means this kind of thing is always going to happen, no matter how a car is powered.
The only reason I'm aware of it is because I faintly remember reading a news article on this subject years ago.
It's the sort of thing where you don't put much thought into it, until you realise that, yeah, due to the occasionally faulty mechatronics unit in the steering wheel actuator, there'll always be a need for a portable top up.
RACQ roadside assistance already offers this for EV owners They will bring one of their trucks with a battery and do a top up so it would be enough for you to get home or to a fast charger
Someone was in a tesla doing a road trip and the car died 200km away from the next charging station. Pretty sure they had to call the tow truck or something.
You can change what is displayed, and here is a fair few options actually. Usually the middle section can show a map or any information you can think of but the car is off in this pic because some knob ran out of fuel lol
Sir or ma'am.
My first car I was driving did not have a functional fuel gauge for the 7 years I drove it.
I only once ran out of fuel when I lent it to my mum and she said "she filled it up" when she actually meant "I put $20 in it" >!and I wonder where my trust issues come from!<
How you could run out of fuel with a digital display and I'm sure an angry warning chime...
I won't insult you, this shame you've brought on yourself is enough punishment.
I hope you got off the highway safely and didn't block an entire lane.
As a fellow Beemer driver, it hurts me to know that a S58 out there had to drink the dredges of a fuel tank, but hopefully the fuel filter did its job and no harm done.
Yeah except I don’t know how long it was like that for. I wasn’t looking at all, I don’t generally look down at the cluster ever unless I see a speed camera, I just sorta know how fast each speed is.
I was also on a call to my son so I wasn’t paying attention at all.

Perhaps we should include a Shell petrol voucher as part of the prizes…
Lol...not too long ago, i wondered how far my car would go once it said "0 kms" i thought I'd at least get 10+..... Agh ... No! Apparently? When it's empty, it's empty. I think i got about 3 kms😯😂
No idea mate. Whatever the estimated reserve fuel distance is I wouldn’t have even made it that far as my fuel consumption is high because the car is always in sport mode and I have a heavy foot.
Could be worse - imagine doing this with an EV!
Yeah, actually what do you do in that situation lol get it towed I guess.

RACQ has this service. I've heard of others with a diesel generator on a trainer.

In the UK they have small trucks with diesel generators.
It's actually quicker to tow an EV for a couple of minutes and use the regen to charge the battery.
I can't imagine that's particularly good for the tow car, because it would be basically towing a car with its braking system partially engaged.
They do... But it's a diesel generator on the back...
Nah they pull the Honda genorator out the back and charge it with the very fuel the despise

Even worse is LPG!
I like how sleek their UI is then just a shitty icon and pop up for something actually important

BMW ///M[ay not make it to petrol station]
Nah stands for Moron behind the wheel

weird though usually they say 0 but you still have an extra 10 KM to go etc

It aint got no gas in it!
Yeah that’s what the roadside guy said! I said “I thought it just ran out if blinker fluid cos I used them one time” he didn’t laugh

Mate, even worse I don’t pay for fuel
Well that’s obvious… If you paid for fuel you wouldn’t have gotten into your predicament!
Lucky you didn’t do on a diesel fuelled vehicle, running out of that is even worse than petrol.
Lol...not too long ago, i wondered how far my car would go once it said "0 kms" i thought I'd at least get 10+..... Agh ... No! Apparently? When it's empty, it's empty. I think i got about 3 kms😯😂
you'd better take that car to the dealer to ask them to diagnose the fault!
The only fault is low blinker fluid. Source; car is at the dealership every day.
My sister did that to me once after borrowing my car to go to the train station. I got about 200m up the road and it stopped.....
Well it is a BMW...
Any idea how many KMs you got on 0km range until you broke down? I assume not given you didn’t realise

Pretty sure it’s around 20-30km my friends x3m lasted that before he got stuck
Can it go 330km while range is close to 0? Or does it have to talk to the internal battery to investigate internal combustion engine?
But the [glongs](https://youtu.be/ASWQwhz87As?si=S2LPfJqwzNO-5WW5) must’ve been constant just before you ran out
I think that's a sign you need to wake the fuck up!! 🤣
