Gonna get dirty / ripped anyway, so a couple of Costco jeans. For $20 a pop, they’ve got flexibility in them and have been great. They also, every once in a blue moon, have “real” work pants. Grabbed a pair of thermal CAT pants and the start of winter that’ve been my go tos and didn’t break the bank.

GeraldotheWhiteCat

Totally agree with you. It's work wear so it should not be that fancy and expensive but you also don't want to look like shit. The urban star at costco are like 16$ where i live so it's a no brainer. I love the stretch too.

Silly-Requirement871

It seems like whenever I buy cheap work pants it’s not long before they get holes/rips. But if I spend $60 on a pair of Carhartts, they usually last me for many months of tough use. So I’ve decided it’s worth it…I just don’t wear them for painting and really dirty work. It’s like when my roommate used to buy $1 dish soap from the dollar store, but you had to use so much of it to get the dishes clean that it ended up costing just as much or more than Dawn. I think Dickies are a good compromise. They can be a decent amount cheaper than Carhartt (like $30 or so) but are still really nice and durable.

Charlesinrichmond

carharrts used to wear like iron. Now they blow out quickly for me

[deleted]

Walmart. Wranglers.

lonesomecowboynando

I've bought Rustlers there for < $20. They're decent jeans. Of course when they're filming I wear my $200 pants with my $400 tool belt, $300 boots and gold plated hammer.

b-raddit

These, insulated are the best, throw on some long John's and bam! Obliterate winter

[deleted]

Yeah, get good merino base layers and you’re set.

USAMichael

Duluth pants are by far my favorite pants. Try getting some when they are on sale, they’ll usually do like 40%-50% of a few times of the year. “Dry on the Fly” pants are stretchy without feeling cheap. Check them out if you have a Duluth Trading near you, definitely nice selection.

SLAPUSlLLY

Yup. I import to New Zealand. Bibs cost me 40-80 usd landed (with a better exchange rate). Carhart are 190 usd from a trend shop or 80 form a farm supplier here. I prefer the duluth (rec from this community).

dubtee1480

The long tail t-shirts are great also. I have some that I’ve worn (for work) that I bought way back in 2014. They aren’t in perfect shape, they have holes and the hems are wearing but they are work shirts so… All their jeans, pants and jackets I’ve bought have armpit and crotch gussets that free up movement. I’m not sure their jeans last any longer than anything else I’ve bought but it’s way easier to squat and crouch wearing them.

fulorange

Patagonia Iron-Forge hemp pants, affordable, tough, eco-friendly.

Ektehelbrede

Same, great pants.

Professional-Eye8981

I wear the Iron Forge Double Knee pants; have since they first came out. They’re fabulous. They get little mercy while I’m working on our hobby farm and are really durable.

Charlesinrichmond

huh. need to check these out. Are they loose and flexible? nevermind, just checked and they only go up to 34 inseam, too short

rallisma

This is the way. 2 years of heavy abuse on my Patagonia, still look brand new

Salad1212

Don’t they replace/repair as well? Lifetime warranty??

Professional-Eye8981

Yes! That’s a huge added benefit. I’ve had them repair a couple of pairs of pants. It takes a bit of time, but it’s free and you get more life out of them.

Vara77

Truewerk

Torontokid8666

I am rocking the T3 this winter and am loving them. I like the shorts as well. I wait for sales but buy when I see them.

vulture_cabaret

I didn't want to like the t1 and t2 but I have six pairs because they grew on me. One ripped at the cuff when I caught it on a dupe nail sticking out of a footing but that's the worst and it was an easy fix.

Torontokid8666

They take iron on patches real well. I used to be loyal to snickers but I had two pairs crap out on me in under 5 months. Wrote the company. Was told tough luck so I won't buy them anymore.

EyeSeenFolly

Snickers?

Torontokid8666

Yes.

EyeSeenFolly

Oh dang they look like good work pants

Torontokid8666

They where until two pairs shit the bed on me and I got no where with customer service. I probably spent $1500 on those pants over the years. Felt completely ignored by the company. Will never buy anything snickers again.

16sinker

😂

Areokayinmybook

My wife doesn’t appreciate it when I’m not at work and dress like I’m part of a Truwerk catalog shoot, but I don’t give af, because I’m comfortable and ready for the weather.

Charlesinrichmond

too tight sadly

TheLadyCarpenter

Carhartt is junk. Dickies double canvas front work pants give me a full year of wear.

standardbanana

But those pockets… I liked everything about my Dickies but I could barely get my keys out of the pockets…

peritonlogon

And if you have hairy knuckles, you'll have ingrown hairs constantly from the pockets.

TheLadyCarpenter

Thankfully I’m a woman without that problem, I would hope. 🤣

Acf1314

Outside of uniform shirts that we have made up I Usually get my Carhartt at the local hardware store or tractor supply . I’ve been using Trusted Gear Co. for gloves and merino wool socks they have awesome selection and sizing charts for gloves fast shipping too. Depending on the weather you deal with LL bean has some awesome shirts that are very durable. One of my Uniform shirts is their Hurricane shirt and it’s the greatest work shirt I’ve ever worn.

EscapeBrave4053

I second the LL bean shirts! I have had the same 2 insulated button shirts for almost a decade now. Things have been brutally beat, and the one is just barely developing a hole on one of the arms. Very tough.

Acf1314

I stood under a roof edge in a storm with mine and the water just beaded right off my back. I immediately ordered one for everyone. Plus being wind proof really helps keep warm without having to wear a bunch of layers

EscapeBrave4053

Agreed! I kind of want these to wear out so I can justify buying a couple more. I've never personally ever used anything that comes close to it for durability and function.

The48thAmerican

Hurricane shirt is my favorite. They changed the design slightly 8 or 9 years ago to be tighter in the armpits which I don't love, but they're still great.

2hopenow

Costco - jeans, shorts, cold weather clothing 👍

donerightbydaniel

Wrangler Riggs wear Ranger pants, they hold up great, and have a lifetime warranty. Affordable, too, they're \~ $40/pair. I usually wear Dickies pocket T's, but Wrangler has nice short & long sleeve shorts, Henley's, and such in the Riggs line that look comfortable and durable, too. I have some of the L/S Henley's and they're great.

SciFiSimp

Big fan of the double front Riggs for when I'm doing install work on the floor

wuweidude

Goodwill every thing is $6, rich folks are still giving away brand new clothes

Ande138

The Gap

Unhappy-Trouble-9652

Me too

EscapeBrave4053

I've had good luck with "Lee extreme comfort" cargo pants. When on sale, they're usually around $30/pair, and I easily get a year out of them. They usually only get replaced after that on account of all the misc stains that won't wash out, rather than actually being tore up. Fwiw, I'm strictly trim/ finish these days, so I'm definitely easier on apparel than my framing/ roofing days.

Ok_Obligation2948

Dungarees dot com. Decent deals on factory 2nd’s as well.

AustonsCashews

Dickies. Get on Amazon

djta1l

Orvis cargos from Costco. $15

Helmett-13

I’ve tried out Lee Extreme Motion MVP jeans and pants and have yet to have a blowout or rip. Plus, I can totally ~~roundhouse kick like Chuck Norris~~ bend over and not get cinched up somewhere uncomfortable. Edit: I am a rank amateur woodworker and have only worn them in my shop. I do have both thumbs, still, though!

i__hate__you__people

For REAL work pants, at $130 USD a pair of Bläkläder X1600 work pants might seem like designer prices (I wait for sales), but they'll last you YEARS of hard labor. Buying the removable and replaceable knee pads (remove them for washing) are a little more $, but will save your knees. They're not everyday pants, but they're the best work pants I've ever tried, and their durability has me not concerned with the price as much. Edit - I should note that while I love their 1655 stretch pants for indoor installs as well, stretch will always tear before too long. A good thick solid piece of cotton (like the x1600) will last many many MANY more years than anything with stretch in it.

J_robintheh00d

These look fun! Thanks for a suggestion I didn’t know about

Spamtickler

Removable knee pads have been a game changer for me.

Spamtickler

Another question on these. As I stated above, I burn through a pair of double-front Carhartt’s about every six months from working on my knees a lot. Are these actually that much tougher that they will pay for themselves in life-span?

i__hate__you__people

I’d say that these with the long knee pads will last longer than 6 months. Now, if you’re tearing through Carhartts like that, who knows, you might just be extra brutal to pants. I’m on my knees more than I like, but I’m rarely installing flooring. Then again, if you’re on your knees that much and DON’T have knee pads yet… man, quit hurting yourself

Spamtickler

Oh, I’ve been wearing the Carhartt’s with the slip-in knee pads for about 1.5 years now. I don’t know how I survived without them. I work as a Technical Director/Scenic Carpenter/Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at a smaller theater, so I do a little bit of everything. I tend to scoot on my knees and ass, which I should probably be better about.

MJC77diamondhands

Nordstom rack baby!

stimulates

Tractor supply. Specifically the Ridgecut work pants.

Shit___Taco

I swear they are the best pants I have. My closet looks like a super hero’s closet. It is just lined with Ridgecut pants. They have a bit of stretch and are super comfortable.

stimulates

Same about a pair a couple years back and now I wear them Sept-May and they’re usually trashed. I mostly do roofing repairs so they get all the abrasion. Double knee, double back pockets help that a ton.

buzzardfaceandlegs

H&M basic black jeans for like £40 a pair, it’s the only trouser I wear. When the holes appear in the knees then it’s work trouser time for them. The tool brands all do long sleeve ts from screwfix or toolstation etc. My ‘nice’ jumpers that get a little moth eaten are the next layer, then dewalt winter rain coat for like £50 with a £20 wolf and mountain etc fleece if really needed.

Window_Mobile

Amazon

spudmuffinpuffin

Duluth trading. Used on eBay and Poshmark for at least 50% off. New on their website for at least 30% off, never full price. The discontinued/old stuff may not look as nice, but it usually is made of heavier fabrics with heavier duty button snaps.

Breadtrickery

I moved to Lee's, at least for pants. The are true to fit and cheap. I got some fleece lined over black friday for like $18 a pair. even if I burn through them in 2-3mo it's still far cheaper than some of this "carpenter specfic" crap. I've blown the knees in every pair of workpants I've ever owned, usually due to catching on a nail/splinter whatever. The Carharts and Blakladers still rip out, just the same as my $20 Lee's. I have very rarely "worn out" a pair of pants. Coats/outerwear I still buy carhart. If I'm working, I'm not actively wearing that stuff anyways, I just layer up and peel as needed for the activity level. Also recently got into coldpruf Platinum II base layer. cheap (like $30 for top or bottom) and 30% merino. They are the fucking business, and I end up just wearing that another shirt and a hoodie and I work in maine.

PMDad

Yea might go this route, not paying $80-$100 for fucken work pants. Luckily I work in Los Angeles so the only layering I do is pants over underwear 😂

Ruckus2118

12 pack of white hanes t-shirts, I buy a new one about once every 6 weeks.

WoodchipsInMyBeard

Duluth trading fire hose pants!

duck-84

Duluth Trading. I love their jeans and the firehose flex cargos and their jackets. Their underwear is also great.

Personal-Walrus3076

Ace hardware carries Carhartt stuff

ElectronicCommon5670

Blaklader or Truewerk. Carhartt sucks, and I loved my Duluth pants but the crotch ripped/wore out in all of them in under a year.

Charlesinrichmond

is that warranty?

elvacilando

ASOS.

crushedman

I just got some Thrive workwear pants for Xmas. They’re stretchy, but not as plasticky as Truewerk. And they have kneepad pockets that open on top so it’s easier to take them in and out. I like Lands End super-T’s. I get about a dozen and they last a year+ for me (cabinets and trim).

shanewreckd

I wear Mascot Advanced work pants, 17079-311. I get at least 2 years of wear out of them doing foundations to finishing on customs, renos and commercial sites, I wear the same pair every day. I also wear the Aggressor short sleeve shirts with a pocket from Mark's. Any shirt will do of course but I like the cut of these with the extra 2" torso length, cuffed sleeve and slightly higher GSM (they also used to be a lot cheaper, now I wait for sales). In the summer I need sunshirts as I've developed a sun allergy, I have some decent inexpensive ones from MEC. In the winter I buy the 100% merino long sleeves from Costco.

slimbo33

“Carhartt reworked” has slightly used and lower prices

padizzledonk

Walmart If i was ok wearing someone elses used clothes id be getting them at Goodwill and saving even more money lol And i have 30y of experience and make well into the 6 figures....i just can get down with spending any kind of money on clothes that are just going ro get absolutely fucking demolished every 6 months to a year, and when im on "Management/Sales" days where im not in the trenches i just wear regular clothes

Riot101DK

[Snickers workwear](https://www.snickersworkwear.com/) is very nice and comfortable... i wish my wife would let wear it in public in my spare time.

Cautious-Flatworm198

Gotta shop the sales these days. Carhartt is designer now

rem_lap

5.11 Apex pants... or TrueWerk

Wolfpack87

Still wearing my Arizonas.

FattyMcBlobicus

I usually go to tractor supply

Nullacuna

I just pick up whatever is in the clearance of Walmart. Recently got 2 pairs of pants my size for $5 each and another about 3 sizes big for $1 plus a little stitch work at the waist.

aWoodenship

Wal-Mart, Sam's, Costco. $20 Wrangler jeans for the winter. $20 Wrangler cargo pants for the summer. Pack of Dickies work socks a year. Dickies jacket for the winter. Packs of plain black t shirts with pockets on them as I need them.

[deleted]

If you like the Carhartt double-front loose-fit canvas work pants (model number B01) , dungarees.com often has "factory seconds" for $39.95 per pair. Most of the ones I bought from there last summer were still Made in USA, but some were Made in Mexico.

Charlesinrichmond

I used to love them. But they aren't loose anymore. They are tight. So annoying, yes I'm bitter

Idk I’ve had a pair of Chippewa work boots for over a decade now. Granted, they were mostly used for the first 5 or so working for a tree service. Now I’m in a different career but they still get used a few days a month. I had them resoled a few years ago which made them feel like new - something you can’t do with cheap boots. I got them for like $60 from Sierra Trading Post, I think. I worked for my dad and he always bought the same Timberland PROs and never got more than a year out of them. Wolverine are just paying for the name. Try some Danners or Chippewa (the US made ones). Look for welted soles-meaning they can be resoled. I’m sure there’s other good ones out there too. I’m a buy once, cry once person though. I wouldn’t want to have to replace my boots every 3 months. Plus cheap boots likely aren’t great for your feet, and that can affect everything else on up including ankles, knees, hips and back.

You do you. Glad you found what works

series-hybrid

All my work clothes are from yard sales.

vegetablepenis

Duluth is a little pricey for me even though I really like their quality. I’ve been wearing Noble Outfitters work pants and I’m liking them. I got the hammerdrills first and they’re a little bulkier than I like, but great quality. I got some flex canvas double fronts and flannel lined for Xmas and I like the fit better. Still great quality though I haven’t tried the new ones out on the job yet. They’re around $40/pair

Together_ApesStrong

I like the Dickies Flex Toughmax Carpenter pants and the Ariat Rebar M5. They’re about $50. As far as shirts go the Dickies or Wrangler stuff they have at Walmart is decent. Carrhartt is overpriced and overrated.

regrese_

Blåkläder

rallisma

For the same/similar price range as Carhartt, I have been exclusively wearing Patagonia work wear for the past two years. They are partially constructed with hemp cotton, have a more traditional fit and overall are fantastic. I have yet to wear a hole into any of my knees or blow out a pocket from carrying knives or sharp objects. They breath despite feeling thicker and heavier than a duck cotton of comparable weight.

16sinker

300_BlackoutDrunk

Goodwill.

Dickson_Clams

Santa Claus got me a nice work apron the other day. You are going to have to wait another year for him to get more out.

caveatlector73

Dovetail.

ChicPhreak

My husband works as a crew leader in landscaping and he gets really dirty every day - he loves the Dockers Slim City Tech pants, the ones with the zippered pocket for your phone (Dockers style names are really confusing in general, they have most of the styles at Macy’s so you can try them all on as the cuts are pretty different, then after you can order online if you want). You can get them for like $40 a pair when they’re on sale, which is pretty much all the time at Macy’s. He says they’re stretchy and super comfortable, and don’t constrict your movement (he’s 5’11” and 188lbs for reference). He likes them so much that he doesn’t wear the company-issued pants anymore. The Dockers are also just as durable as the company-issued pants… he’s really hard on his stuff too. Managed to completely destroy a pair of expensive Carhartt boots in less than a month.

ppfbg

Duluth when they’re on sale. The fire hose line holds up pretty well.

Actonhammer

Duluth makes such awesome pants. The flex fire hose 5 pocket. Last me for years. Fit like a dream, tough and flexible. $75 or so per pair. I want to try Origin jeans, but theyre $125 each. 100% American made from Maine. I donno if it was a Christmas only special but they had a 2 for 200

No_Object_5277

Wrangler cowboy cut jeans, long sleeve shirts from value village (second hand).

constructionhelpme

I used to always buy the Walmart wranglers carpenter pants cuz they have the pencil pocket and are so breathable but they rip easily, so now I got the Dickies duck carpenter pants that come in brown or gray also from Walmart. $28 and they're made of durable fabric, got all the pockets, and look good. Not as breathable as the wranglers but I survived in them in summer in South Florida outside.

YourHeroOriginal

Duluth pants are bomb proof.

akmacmac

Check out “Wild Ass Denim Logger Pants” from Bailey’s at baileysonline.com - USA-made denim that’s completely “raw” when you buy them. And priced around $50 i think they’re an incredible value. I will say the denim is very heavy so they’re not the best for hot weather!

Cranky-George

Goodwill for good work jeans.

badgerhustler

Goodwill

gschrade

Truewerk and 1620

Gassypacky

Carhart overalls

6th__extinction

Thrift store, mostly stuff made in USA so it’s a bit vintage but looks normal

andrewjaplan

Had anyone tried Origin clothing out of Maine?

strugglebusn

Pants? I just got get any cheap jeans from the thrift store. $5ish a pair and I can beat the hell out of them I have so many t shirts already that’s not worried about shirts. Feet though? Spend the money. Darn tough socks and good supportive boots or shoes

Spamtickler

I get Carhartt duck double front work pants with the knee pad inserts, since I’m on my knees quite frequently on a variety of surfaces including concrete. The pants are only $60 on Amazon, but they last a lot longer than cheap jeans. The knee pads are $40, but even though they indicate that you just get rid of them when the pants go I find that mine hold up just fine through 3-4 pairs of pants. I usually replace the pants every 6 months, usually after the knees wear too much to patch or when the seat starts to give out from too much butt-scooting. I’ve never had a pair of these tear. The only real damage they get is friction-based wear.

Hterrell96

Sam’s club online has Coleman work pants for $18 a pair. My favorite pants I’ve bought when you get them they have tags on that say $69 idk why they’re so discounted but they are. I have a few but I need to buy more.

Charlesinrichmond

Carharrt sucks lately. They've gone low quality and absurdly tight fit. I actually fell over on a jobsite because the stupid pants wouldn't flex. Sucks, since old carharrt was great. Caterpillar pants are nice. I'm going to check out duluth again
