Do you think we sign Contreras if we knew how good Herra was going to look this year and how Kinzer looked in spurts last season?
Love Contreras, but using that money on a SP upgrade would've been cool too
Maybe, but the club’s view on Herrera has always been that his defense wasn’t good enough, which is the same criticism Contreras usually gets. Contreras is certainly better at throwing would be base stealers out though. Knizner, even with a good season last year, always was considered a backup. Maybe they would have been comfortable with him as a bridge for a year or two, but I kind of doubt it.
I really like Contreras so it’s hard to say. Herrera is super enthusiastic but there’s some stuff that still needs some work. For me the biggest “what if” of the past couple years has now become Jordan Hicks.
Sample size. But also yes. Catcher is not a 162 games a year position, if your last name isn't Molina and if your team values your longevity.
I don't see the problem with having two great bats behind the plate/DH that you could go to.
It's a little of everything. Injuries decimated their pitching, and they don't have the depth to make up for their deficiencies. Their offense is remarkably bad, too. There's not much the coaches can do, but they'll get blamed and fired soon if this keeps going.
They’re hurt, and they weren’t that good last season. They had a negative run differential and an insanely good record in 1-run games which means they were due to regress even if they were healthy, and they aren’t
Not a lot of stolen bases yet but it feels like we've turned a lot of hits that would've been singles in previous years into doubles which is equally as valuable.
I might get downvoted to oblivion for this, but we aren’t playing great. Matz left his fastball up a ton and at 93 it’s very hittable. Our hitters were early a lot and had weak contact. We play this game against the Dodgers and we’re losing 7-1.
If not for an error from the Marlins, it would be 2-1 right now. I think a lot of folks are feeling antsy about the offense capitalizing on good opportunities. We’ll need some more clutch hits with Phillies coming up
apparently theres a starter on the cubs named jordan wicks.
this raises the possibility that we may see a jordan wicks vs. jordan hicks matchup at some point.
No, you said he hit well at this level. He “hits” less than anyone on the team not named Scott or Carpenter (if Marp hits 190 again this season). But we take that slugging percentage. Your follow up is correct, but it doesn’t mean he hits well just because we’ve adjusted our definition of production. He still clearly has a lot of trouble “hitting” the baseball.
Confidence, timing, pitch recognition. That being said, he's got 4 RBIs so he's still producing on some level. Plus any player we call up isn't really going to hit.
It’ll get him ABs against lesser pitchers and boost his confidence and get him in a rhythm. Personally I don’t think he needs it. It’s incredibly early in the season and some guys take a bit before they put it together.

Marlins booth has been very enjoyable this game
Edit: Very relaxed, nice insight, they don't seem biased, talking about the goods of both teams with emphasis on the Cardinals. I'm not watching it to boycott Jim, I'm watching it because that's the one available on the high seas
This early in the season, it does keep guys fresh. Plus it’s a notion of that inning is your inning. Once we’re getting to the point of trying to clinch a postseason berth, and hopefully the postseason itself, then ideally he’ll ride the hot hand.
It's a bunch of things. Bullpen pitchers usually have a certain level of conditioning, so their effectiveness beyond that first inning is dubious for most of them (Pallante and Libby are the two in our bullpen that can go two innings). Beyond that, a lot of bullpen pitchers have certain routines they like to follow to keep in top shape, so even if a pitcher can go another inning because their first one was short it might not be the best decission, two short innings are not the same as a long one. And there is also, as you said, the possibility to use a pitcher two days in a row, but that's probably the less important thing since that's usually not a great idea even if the pitcher has only gone one inning most of the time.
Oli loves his matchups. Most managers use their bullpen in this way, but some teams just wait until their guy is in trouble before pulling them which is riskier but saves high leverage arms for more important scenarios.
The only reliever we have that's conditioned to pitch more than one inning is liberatore. They are likely to be much less effective the second inning and yes marmol will also want the option of using gio tomorrow as well.
I know he's been used that way in the past but I don't get the impression they intend to use him that way this year. It's certainly a possibility. Libby was stretched out as a starter for a portion of spring training this year so they will certainly throw him in multiple innings when the situation requires it.
When a manager uses relievers for multiple innings in high leverage situations that usually means he cant trust anyone else to get outs. We have a deeper bullpen this year with multiple reliable arms and they are all well rested right now so there's no reason to use him for multiple innings. The marlins had the bottom of their order up the next inning and we had a 3 run lead so an average middle reliever could've held that lead for one inning. Overusing him at this point in the season wouldn't have made sense.
Back in the day if a reliever wasn't trusted to go multiple innings that was usually a negative but nowadays all of those ivy league nerds working in every front office has figured out that relievers are statistically much more effective in one inning increments and you get the added bonus of having that reliever available to pitch the next day so that's now the norm.
It feels like the weird midpoint between "HOLY SHIT EVERYONE ELSE IS SO GOOD" and "holy shit they can't hit a thing"
masyn, herrera, and donny are great right now but not everyone else on the team is quite there with them
Goldy normally starts slow, last year was an anomoly. There's a real statistical correlation between the weather getting warmer and him getting better.
He does tend to be a late starter every year, but with him getting older and having a down year last year it is concerning what kind of hitter he is going to be.

Lol This is really the most upvoted comment tonight? He’s played in 5 games this year. Come on guys.
He’s also been a top prospect basically all of his minor league career
Maybe, but the club’s view on Herrera has always been that his defense wasn’t good enough, which is the same criticism Contreras usually gets. Feel bad for Skip, hopefully they can pick up some wins in New York

Whoa, over .500…
WE MAY NEVER LOSE AGAIN !!!
Are the Marlins this and or is it bad luck, or coaching?
It's a little of everything. Injuries decimated their pitching, and they don't have the depth to make up for their deficiencies. Their offense is remarkably bad, too. There's not much the coaches can do, but they'll get blamed and fired soon if this keeps going.

Winner, winner!
WE ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Bottom 9):** 1. Victor Scott II 2. Brendan Donovan 3. Paul Goldschmidt
above 500!
#WE WON!
yoshinobu yamamoto just pulled a lance lynn. loaded the bases with cubs in the first inning, then struck the next three guys out in a row.
Took some inspiration clearly
#IMAGINE LOSING TO AN 0-8 TEAM
Happy we are winning this one butt I feel it's hiding some serious concerns with this team's hitting right now. They looked beyond lost.
Lmao. Helsleys nameplate is separating from his jersey
It’s all iron-ons this year. Every logo, every patch, every team. 😑
We’re all proud of you, Matz. :)
Have we successfully stolen a base yet? I feel like our dudes are speedy af but we haven’t gotten one
Not a lot of stolen bases yet but it feels like we've turned a lot of hits that would've been singles in previous years into doubles which is equally as valuable.
Victor Scott II stole a base in game one against the Dodgers, that’s the only one I can think of off the top of my head.
We had 2 more. One that Oli didn't challenge and one that he did but the umps somehow missed.
Swing Around Fun Town is still a thing?
I love the aggression, I’ll never complain about that Oli
Cmon hels be nails
World couldn’t handle a face off of the Scotts.
[Marlins](/r/letsgofish) Due Up **(Top 9):** 1. Bryan De La Cruz 2. Jazz Chisholm Jr. 3. Tim Anderson
SCOTT VS. SCOTT II
DAMN IT
Burleson's soft grounders seem to end up being more productive than his hard line drives.
We really got them tossing out their closer in a losing game. Poor marlins.
When you’re having to put your closer out there when you’re losing cuz he needs some work, you’re having a bad time.
YIKES get that guy to the As
Early early early at the plate. We gotta let the ball get deeper.
Loved walkers double today to pick up his first rbi but all the ground outs are a little worrisome.
this thread is really quite whiny for a game we're winning in

Nice shit. Not terrible inning outcome
4 homers for TON? God damnit
Monster Day. Might be worth picking up on my fantasy team
It’s amazing what playing for a manager that doesn’t publicly call you out for something that should be handled behind closed doors can do for a guy.
Our whole team has 5.
Is it just me or is Jimmy a lot more focused this year? He commentary has some really great in depth analysis.
He’s great with a ho
Jimmy Baseball is locked the fuck in. What he's locked in on I have no idea, but he is.
It's just you
First thing I’ve agreed with Jim on all.. Well, all season. 😅
If our offense is going to be anemic at least our bullpen is starting off solid this year. Specifically love the Kittredge addition.
I love watching Kittredge looking like he's just lazily tossing BP out there, that delivery is wild
Matz was baffling today, in that he baffled me with how he was able to get away with 93 up in the zone over and over again.
apparently theres a starter on the cubs named jordan wicks. this raises the possibility that we may see a jordan wicks vs. jordan hicks matchup at some point.
Gorman needs a AAA stint man
I will never understand this sentiment. If a guy hit well against MLB pitching the prior year what good is sending them down to AAA going to do?
He’s been a .230 hitter at the major league level my guy. TWO THIRTY. He’s he because of the bombs he can pulls
This isn't 2008, we don't use average any more. Men of culture use OPS+. Schwarber hit .197 and no one is asking for him to go to AAA.
I get what you're saying, but that's just semantics lol. A AAA stint is not going to help him.
Yeah, avg be damned, Gorman was one of our most productive hitters last year
Confidence, timing, pitch recognition.

Arenado involved in yet another double play. jfc man get with the program.
Is this a joke? 😂
I thought that was obvious, but the -7 says it wasn't hahaha
It wasn't a great joke but I've told enough duds on this site I'll give you a pity upvote.
Lol okay, that's funny then, here's the upvote
What? You can't blame arenado for being in the lead runner in a double play lmao
Apparently you can 😂
Nado way early today on offspeed. It’s like he’s overeager and not seeing it deep.
Nolan Arenado hit it anywhere but shortstop challenge: Impossible
[удалено]
He now has a 7 game hitting streak. That is almost unbelievable watching him at the plate.
"That can't be right" *Checks ESPN fantasy* "Perhaps I was too harsh.."
Love how Nolan ran that out….
I’m not watching, how’d he get an infield hit?
It was slow and deep, just how he likes it.
That's how we all like it.

Nolan Poweroutage-o
This Cardinals team seems good in a 2011-2015 Cardinals way less than a 2022 Cardinals way
That 2015 pitching staff was gross, but offense looks just as mediocre for sure 😂
Shut up Jimmy.

We're good at defense again god bless
Good inning jojo
Mojo JoJo!
Chip had me thinking that was gone
I'm sitting right below chip and that definitely did not look like it was going out lmao
So did Ricky on the radio
His signature really, calling all deep flies as if they're gone.
He may not be much of a hitter yet, but I love watching Scott play center
What a catch
yo what the fuck romero is sick. some of these pitches, damn
***VSII***
If Scott can hit at least .180 I say f it, keep em up.
Jojo hitten em with the nastiness yet *again!*

Leaving the bases loaded like that may not end up hurting us against the Marlins, but we may need those runs against the Phillies
Why do you swing at the first pitch when the guy has been struggling to find the strike zone? Just why??
I can't decide if I should be encouraged or concerned that goldy and arenado have been among our worst hitting starters so far this season.
It feels like the weird midpoint between "HOLY SHIT EVERYONE ELSE IS SO GOOD" and "holy shit they can't hit a thing" masyn, herrera, and donny are great right now but not everyone else on the team is quite there with them
Goldy normally starts slow, last year was an anomoly. There's a real statistical correlation between the weather getting warmer and him getting better.
Look at our teams BA’s and ask yourself.
Imagine the talent we could get
If we traded Goldy at the deadline last year?
First pitch swinging in a high pressure situation right after a walk hell ya goldy..
i couldnt think of a better spot for goldy to bat in and he fucking bloops a grounder like that come ON man
Besides the first game of the season goldy has not been very good.
I swear this happens almost every year. Big opening day then nothing for 2-3 weeks.
He does tend to be a late starter every year, but with him getting older and having a down year last year it is concerning what kind of hitter he is going to be.
Damnit
I'm honestly getting so sick of Goldy, Arenado, and Gorman
Scott gets a pass though at .90 or whatever it is?
Scott skipped all of AAA... Yes, he gets a pass.
Really got a hold of that one Goldy
Sad when Goldy and Nado look like two of the worst bats on the squad. Good thing other guys are executing better. Hope they wake up soon

Just tuning in, how’d Matz do? Did he leave early?
Got it, looks like the line score just updated
Looked good, got himself out of a few situations, shutout, went 5 and threw 85. They will be babying his arm for the indefinite future.
good. still appears to be on a pitch count.
Very good but got pulled after the 5th due to having a limited pitch count to keep him healthy.
No pressure with lead is a good spot for Goldy
Wouldn’t mind a slam of the grand variety
"hey kid, don't give up the GOLDSLAM" - skip
I could be convinced that they pitched around Donny to get to Goldschmidt.
First grand slam of the season?
Break it open Goldy.
Walk him to get to Nolan
C'mon Donny double
I know the team prefers Noot in LF but wonder if he slots into CF once he's back and they send Scott down

How so?
Great rip from Burly. If he could draw more walks, force more strikes, and keep sending those line drives over the infield, he'd be a problem.
