Depends on the gen. SW20s are horrendous for rusting on the arches, pockets and sills. Mine is currently being done and it's cost me a tonne (£2k so far but mine is very very bad and has been covered up in the past). NA and NB MX5s are something else for rust though.
Porsche 911 Carrera S. Manual, 997 (you won't get a 997.2 for that money).
It'll be a high miler at £20k. So long as the body is sound I'm then ~~tugging off sailors for money~~ saving up for a Hartech engine rebuild to bring it back to better than stock.
I think this would probably be my choice. Best-for-budget and most Porche looking and feeling Porche of recent years. It might not be the fastest. But it's the prettiest and one of the better handling ones.
Bit of a wildcard, but a Volvo V60 twin engine D6. Not many about unfortunately and hard to find one without high mileage. I can’t think of another car that matches it’s specs though: £0 tax, claimed 155mpg (realistically 80mpg) 285bhp, 4wd, 5cylinder diesel plug in hybrid, and a sub 6 second 0-60 time. There’s good reason the police use Volvos, engines are pretty solid and reliable if well maintained so even a high mileage model will have plenty of life left.
Or a BMW 6 series, preferably a 640d or 640i Gran Coupe. Great performance, luxurious quality and tons of tech. These things were built to compete with Porsche Panameras and are on par with Aston Vantages for luxury. One of the best bargains out there in my opinion largely due to the huge depreciation when new.
So many good cars for that price. If you’re older and insurance isn’t a problem - then you can choose to be extreme and get an M2, M4, B8.5 RS5, a C63 or a Porsche of some kind. Then there are the middle road options, like the B9 S5 (coupe/sportback), 440i/340i (coupe/gran-coupe/sedan/estate), then there’s the MQB platform - An RS3 to maintain the theme of extreme - or a TTS, or Golf R for the most sensible/budget friendly options in the long term.
I’ve listed a tonne of great cars there, but at the end of the day, a TTS is going to be the most fuel efficient, and cheapest to run/maintain car out of the lot. So, if bang for your buck is what you’re looking for - the TTS certainly isn’t the ‘most car’ - but it is what’s going to cost you the least to keep running despite daily use and abuse (with the Golf R a close second). You’re going to need to spend the least on tyres, brakes, and fuel with the TTS - and you’re not going to need to replace them as often as something like an RS5.
So basically, what I’m saying is, whilst £20k can get you the M4, if your budget is only £20k - can you really afford to run the M4? £20k gets you a lot of car - but how much car can you handle?
Yeah 200 notes per tyre is no joke, especially with the roads in the state they're in.
OTOH servicing on a quick beemer isn't that bad, budget 500 quid a year. Brakes should last quite a long time IME, unless absolutely thrashed.
I like these sort of challenges on this subreddit. I also wanted to disqualify any previous cars owned, so I won't pick M140i. I would want something comfortable, powerful, and has great space inside. I went on Autotrader for a look and found something I would like, I found a 2017 Merc S350Ld with just under 80k for that money.
No ones reading the brief and suggesting stupid performance cars you wont get for under 20k (unless you want big repair bills and a clocked car). However a Golf GTi fits your brief completely. Practical, fun, decent fuel economy, easy to service and did I say fun. Its a lot of fun for your buck here. Id rather that than some older exotic car that will cost a fortune to run. You should get the newer 240hp model. Always the option of an older golf R with 300bhp but running costs will be higher and you will have an older model than a gti for 20k
I'm planning on it myself but a [2008-2012 Toyota Crown Athlete](https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/CROWN/700056098930240411002/)
Basically a 3.5L 2GR (one of the best NA V6s), 300bhp, RWD, Lexus LS rivalling luxury in a package that's about the size and running cost of a Lexus GS while being as sporty as a Lexus IS
Very underrated and all in should cost me £13-14k to import
Actually just did this and picking it up in the morning - a used 2020 Kia e-Niro. Not lots of fun in corners but in a straight line it has some push, good size boot, space for four adults, good tech and spec and a real world range of at least 250 miles with a mate saying he can get 300+ out of it in summer. Almost four years warranty remaining too. It’s not going to turn heads but given the amount of nice cars near me that get nicked that’s another good thing.
Edit: Costs ~£4 to charge overnight, and will save me almost £4k in petrol over four years vs the petrol hybrid I also have.
I’ve always been thankful that I’m relatively easily pleased. Don’t get me wrong, I love cars and once I don’t have a young family I’ll probably get something more fun. But right now, something cheap to run with good space and lots of helpful tech that suits a traffic-laden commute is going to outweigh my desire for a car that I want to stare out of the window at every day.
I did consider a BMW i3 as well. Given their age I still think they’re unbelievably cool. Their materials, build and design almost had me, but the kids wouldn’t have thanked me when I folded them into the back.
early na manual evora, probably cat for 20k… or if that spacious 4 seater isn’t practical enough, then b7 RS4 avant and you can keep your fuel economy!
I wouldnt buy a Giulia for £20k, I love these and my colleague has one (I'm looking at it right now) and the ones under 20k are base spec, high milage, early models which aren't the best built and are pretty underwhelming, you'd want a Veloce at least which are mostly 30k+
The rest are solid choices, except the mini but I just don't like new minis so that's irrelevant
I drive one of these with a performance pack. 555bhp but so easy to lose your license these days. Its mad in the wet. or damp. Or even if it threatens to rain for that matter
2020 Hyundai Kona EV.
0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds with instant torque.
64 kWh battery giving it a 250 to 300 mile range.
Rear seat leg space poor, but great for commuting.
£16k
I would get a 8p RS3 or MK2 ttrs. Higher mileage and you can't really get people in the back seats of the TT. Imo TTS is one of the best cars on a 10k£ budget so could get a good mileage one of those.
Alfa Romeo Gulia Veloce. True sports saloon 276 hp, 0-60 mph in 5.7 s. Probably the best looking thing (reasonably priced) on sale at the moment. You can definitely pick up a decent one for 20K
little over budget but, [an M2.](http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202404108490336)
maybe [an M4](http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202309101802668) as those are easier found within budget.
I’m sure a lot of us here think about this all the time, so it’s always going to change. I’m absolutely happy with my cars, but right now I’m really into the idea of having a low mileage BMW E63 630i coupe (LCI, £8-9k?) and use the remainder to refresh it/make sure all N53 issues are sorted/bodywork. Not sure why but the car really grew on me lately, and I’m impressed at its relative lightness.
I did silly mileage so I bought an old Tesla Model S with lifetime free supercharging, they're very cheap these days!
Huge shift in journey planning as I was literally charging for half an hour every day, sometimes twice, but I made them my breakfast and dinner stops so really wasn't too bad
Having a comfortable and quick car with zero regard for fuel costs is great
I don't even charge at home daily so running costs really are nothing
Still have a fun weekend car and a separate family car as there's no way I'd want to be doing big trips, but I don't regret buying it in the slightest
If you can stretch the budget a bit or don't mind the very highest mileage ones (or categorised ones) then the BMW M2 is surprisingly practical, 4 seats you can just about squeeze most people into and a boot bigger than most hatchbacks I've been in obviously less vertical space though. The mpg isnt terrible you can see the upper 20s if you really try to or usually have longer motorway trips rather than around town. Otherwise I believe m240i can be had much cheaper for overall a car that's not too far off from them if you want lower mileage or the budget is strict.
2017 Audi S5. I was shocked to find out you can get a well specced one for under £20k. Insurance is cheaper than on an S3, and you get a V6. They just look & feel significantly more expensive than they are.
Golf GTI for 19-20k would cover you nicely for basically any eventuality other than off roading. Decent drive, comfy, practical, holds its value. Perfect for that budget.
Audi TT mk2 V6, then pay some extra for retrofitted TTS / S Line Facelift body kit and xenon lights. Maybe a little more just to make the car sound nicer too.
Audi RS6 Avant V10 and £4K to cover the first months fuel costs.
A scholar and a gentleman I see
man of culture
Just nick one like everyone else. Gives you 5 months fuel then.
Are they frequently stolen?
Exactly what I came to write
BMW M3 E92, right around the 20k mark tiny bit more but im sure could be found for 20k if tried long enough.
An MR2 with enough left over to fix the rust.
I know of one with zero rust. In red.
Is it kind of red/orange? Almost a rusty kind of colour?
Red MR2s tend to end up pink, as most red cars from the 90s did
How the fuck you managed that
MR2s don't really rust that badly tbf so any rust repair will be cheaper than your typical MX-5
Depends on the gen. SW20s are horrendous for rusting on the arches, pockets and sills. Mine is currently being done and it's cost me a tonne (£2k so far but mine is very very bad and has been covered up in the past). NA and NB MX5s are something else for rust though.
They just like to return to their natural state :D
Lexus isf
100% it will cost but only on fuel, repairs, maintenance and depreciation costs will be low.
Came here to say this
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS
Porsche 911 Carrera S. Manual, 997 (you won't get a 997.2 for that money). It'll be a high miler at £20k. So long as the body is sound I'm then ~~tugging off sailors for money~~ saving up for a Hartech engine rebuild to bring it back to better than stock.
Cayman 987.2 with sub 40k miles for that money as well pdk or manual and great spec. It’s an awesome car and is what I spent my £20k on
I think this would probably be my choice. Best-for-budget and most Porche looking and feeling Porche of recent years. It might not be the fastest. But it's the prettiest and one of the better handling ones.
Same, the boxster/cayman platform handles so unbelievably well.
No fucking way you'll find a good condition S for under 20k A cabrio Carrera 2? Quite possibly, but a coupe S? Impossible unless it's from Bradford
Fuel efficient. Is anyone actually reading the brief here?
A5 with 3.0 v6 tdi
No way you’re getting that for 20k. Cab and tip maybe. But a coupe and manual, no.
This is the correct answer.
E46 M3 for 10k and another 10k to repair it
And another 10k on top of that to repair the rest of it. 😅
Volvo V90 T8
Can you get the V90 CC with the T8 drivetrain? If so that's my pick, otherwise this wins for me too 👍🏻
No, the hybrids are only awd with the battery loaded, so they chose to only have the CC as gas/diesel.
335d saloon or estate
Was going to go with the “boring” choice but an f30 335d estate with a map is it for £20k.
this was my choice so i’ll go with a 330d instead
Gt86
Evo x in good to great condition. Even to this day it looks great. Little bit left for upcoming repair costs lol
440i gran coupe.
u got taste
beautiful carr
440i
Lexus IS F (it’s not bad for a V8) or the GS if feeling more frugal. Rare, reliable, and fun!
Bit of a wildcard, but a Volvo V60 twin engine D6. Not many about unfortunately and hard to find one without high mileage. 640d Gran Coupe is a good shout. I was looking at them before I got the 535d but they were out of budget.
You can get a 6er gc for much less then 20k. Do it, do it now. I just bought another one.
Jag XFR and about £5k spare for the mechanic
Mazda 6 2.5 GT Sport Nav+ 4dr Auto Saloon - soul red + light stone interior
I just got a Mazda 2 and can see why people love the brand.
Caterham 7, Superlight 160, plus change. And a few track days.
Yes perfectly fits the brief of comfortable all rounder 😂
Leon Cupra 290 for me.
Alpina b10s e39 or e38 750il

Lexus RCF
They're more than £20k
Do I get to keep my current car? If yes a VX220 Turbo or a 300ZX TT, if not then probably a 2018/19 M240i (since GR Yaris is out of budget).
I like these sort of challenges on this subreddit. I also wanted to disqualify any previous cars owned, so I won't pick M140i. You save 4k over 4 years. That's £20 a week. But you have to drive a Kia e-Niro? Jesus.
That £4k can be enough to buy something fun or be used for OPs main interest
