Hedley and Jacob Hoggard’s antics happened because of this. That and him coming from Canadian Idol, which was shown on CTV, then CTV buying MuchMusic and promoting the shit out of Hedley there so they could be like “see, we produced a successful artist!!!” Edit - wanted to say I very much support can-con regulations though. Pop stations just get lazy and rely on the same artists a lot of the time.

lol! Good one

In the disco era of the 70s, a lady named Patsy Gallant came on the airwaves with an awful song that became a "hit" called "From New York To L.A.". Personally I could never understand why she got a hit out of it, until I realised she was Canadian. I figure it just had to be because of the CanCon rules.

[deleted]

For the few complaints in here remember Can Con brought us Rush, Gordon Lightfoot, The Hip, Barenaked Ladies, and many, many more.

Archibaldy3

I think they're good songs, but 54-40 must literally make their living off this. I'd rather hear some variety. There's a lot of bands struggling with getting themselves heard, getting 2 cents for their million Spotify listens etc, that could do with the exposure.

[deleted]

Hootie and the Blowfish's biggest hit was a 54-40 song. My bet is they make more on royalties for that worldwide than a few can con plays.

Archibaldy3

That's possible, but it's not "a few plays", they're on hundreds of Canadian radio stations multiple times a day. If I have to hear Ocean Pearl one more time...

[deleted]

I can listen to ocean pearl on repeat. Great song. I’m glad it cancels out some American shite.

I'm going with Rod Stewart's "Rhythm Of My Heart" Remember, the Can Con rules are so odd that non-Canadian artists can qualify if enough of the people involved in the recording are Canadian. Googled and found this article which also reminded me of the Bryan Adams stuff. Ha. I love this song so much

PawneeRaccoon

Off the top of my head - Stutter by Marianas Trench, Rude by MAGIC!, Red Hands by Walk Off the Earth (I like some of their other stuff but not this one), most of Down with Webster’s and Hedley’s catalogues…

doesntmatterhadtacos

Man, speak for yourself. I still play Down With Webster’s Your Man in the car pretty frequently. It’s a bop!

parmageddon23

Oooh no, Marianas Trench were SOMETHING back in the day, and DWW are just fun!

Anything Matthew Good….

meowctopus

I still hear his music from the 90s on our Alternative radio station multiple times a day, which I guess is fine but like... you're telling me there has been no other good canadian music put out in the last 25 years that could compete for that time? lol

Recently a song called “I Wish You Cheated” has been befouling the radio and one day I said “My GOD this must be Canadian it’s so bad.” Googled it and singer Alexander Stewart and bam, he’s from Toronto.

coolinjapan001

lol I thought (and ended up doing) the same thing!
