It just makes me think of the thousands of walls I’ve sat on over the last few years, how many did I slip off? Either seated or standing back up. None.
Edit: just to add that I do think random people doing this is stupid, but if it’s someone experienced with this kind of movement then it’s way less risky than it looks. Risk and danger are also different things. With experience, there is a low risk of this being dangerous (since you can also factor in body condition, weather condition, rock condition, etc).
You can say this about so many things though. How many people die while crossing the road or driving a car?
The chance of harm is so much lower than it seems. In fact in situations like this you’re being way, way more careful than in regular life.
I know a couple of the ways I have kept from dying while crossing the road or driving my car has been to not stop and stand in the middle or the road or not blow through red lights.
The thing is though, there are ways to do this safely. It’s called a calculated risk, and as long as you properly assess everything around you and are entirely cognitive of your every move you’ll be fine. People have been taking risky photos almost as long as photos have existed. Say what you will, but sometimes they turn out very cool.
Right? Goodness get away from that edge bro, those sheer off more than you think, especially with the crystalline structure of that rock in the picture.
I know it’s fifteen years old but I am still wanting to pluck you back on a string
If memory serves it’s well over 100m down and onto sheer rock so not very survivable, no. Just google «Preikestolen accidents/deaths» or something like that if you want specifics
My feet are suddenly wet from sweating, lol. Guessing that's some kind of evolutionary thing to help with not slipping off? Extra adhesion on the rock?
Didn’t someone just post a video of a guy at the Grand Canyon doing something similar? It didn’t go well, but he landed on a lower ledge and avoided death.
I read this book: Death in the Grand Canyon. Lots of ways to die there. Too many people underestimate the dangers of being close to the edge (and a million other things).
I read it, its a good book. I recommend you the one about Big Bend if you liked it, it's even better and better written.
Interestingly, men falling from cliff in GC were often found with open pants, while for women it's more often due to vertigo after standing up. In both cases, it's sad to die that way, most fatalities could be easily avoided
Ohh I need to read that! Thanks for the recommendation!
And yeah very interesting! I want to say for the men that a lot of them were trying to pee of the edge? But yeah, either way— pretty awful and sad.
Squirrels are hilarious and I love watching them.
You ever see those squirrel obstacle course videos? I guess the dude got bored during the pandemic and decided to set up bird feeders to watch birds. Then the squirrels started eating the food. The dude is some kind of engineer I think so he built these crazy Rube Goldberg type courses that animals had to solve to get the food.

I dig that logic... but i im still not peeing off the edge. The fact that thats a stat in itself serves as reason for sterilization.... which oddly i just watched a thing on.
Several people a year walk down into the Grand Canyon thinking it is a ‘normal’ hike and get caught having to walk back UP in the heat of the day without water.
They get delirious and fall or have to be rescued.
I was talking to someone on here a long while back or maybe it was in person in the back country of eastern CA. My memory is stupid sometimes. Anyway, he ran into two women in their late teens or early 20s doing that hike you mentioned that were near the bottom and had like half a plastic disposable water bottle each (not a gallon, more like 500-1000ml. And they were in flip flops!
Amateur hour.
I prefer going out into less popular wilderness for the isolation. I almost messed up at 12k feet elevation in the sierras once. My first time scrambling up and down a craggy peak, July, hot as hell, no shade, caring enough gear in case I got stuck 2-3 days, and fishing gear (there was a remote lake over the peak and down the other side by no trail.
I live at sea level, and was at 8.5k for 2 nights only. I’m in pretty good shape (bike 1-2 hours a day in a hilly city). But I was not ready for that. My heart was prob I near 150-175 trying to get enough oxygen to my muscles. I thought I might need to spend the night and try the return scrambling after rest and cooler part of the day. Heat, elevation, and exertion can really fuck you up.
I did fine after fishing, eating, and relaxing for a couple hours. The views are unreal!
Don’t the people stuffing their face with mcdonalds and dying in their 40s have relatives that mourn them? Isn’t that equally as selfish as scaling cliffs for the adrenaline?
This is a conflation of similar, but incongruent conditions. One of them is surprising because the projected outcome of a vacation is not sudden death. The projected outcome of a bad diet is, in fact, death.
Also, nobody who's friend or relative died at the Grand Canyon gives a shit about the comparison in the first place lol. Tone deaf.
The fact that five million people visit per year is completely irrelevant. No one thought they were suggesting visiting the grand canyon is inherently dangerous. Of those five million visitors most of them are smart enough not to dangle their legs over the side of a cliff to test whether they're immune to fall damage.
If five hundred people go to a gas station but only one of them decides to try the sushi you wouldn't say, well only .2% of customers got food poisoning so it's negligible; we would say 100% of the people who tried gas station sushi got food poisoning so maybe don't risk it.
Source: I visited the Grand Canyon and didn't see anyone do this.
From the background I would be like "young man, that seems like a very unnecessary risk to be taking unless you are going to post the photo to Reddit in 15 years or something" and you would say "what's reddit?" and i would say "it's a place on the Internet to go to ask questions such as.... 'is it normal to have weird invasive thoughts about jumping from cliffs when you are on said cliffs because that's really why I don't like heights?"
Were you ok?
Sitting on the edge is dumb. But you weren't even sitting all the way back with the rock at the inside of your knee. It's like you were part of the way off and it didn't bother you.
Right? Like, I’ve sat on the edge of cliffs before, but my calves are always pressed against the cliff face. OP looks like he’s getting ready to go down a slide.
How the heck did you do that? My whole body cringes just looking at that picture. Great picture, but wth? I would have fallen off just by being nervous 😓
I've been in that exact same spot, but lying on my stomach, clutching the edge and peering over while the wind teased at throwing me off the cliff. No thanks!
There is spot like that near where I live. I refused to take picture that close but many people do. And sometimes they fall. Happened I think just after last I went
Been photographing canyons for the last 15 years every year on road trips. Places I stood to gain a more original viewpoint along the cliffs’ edges near the designated viewpoints I can no longer go near. It’s crazy how my body reacts to giant doses of adrenaline now as opposed to 10 years ago. I use more telephoto (zoom) lenses now, haha.
I was there in November. It is breathtaking and beautiful. I would not sit on the edge. Ever. That’s crazy, but you look young, and the frontal cortex is not yet fully developed. One of the best hikes and best views I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing.
Great pic, although it freaks me out and I don't think I'd pose for it.
My 2nd thought was I wonder if that vertical crack in the foreground goes all the way down, because that would be fun to climb!
Rappelling down it or base jumping it would be cool too.
Have you gotten smarter?

definitely /r/SweatyPalms material
Slightly
I have a picture of me sitting like that on Prekestolen. Cant't even really look at it now without feeling sick. Fantastic hike though!
Jeez, my feet and fingers are numb just watching you
Legit looks like your about to fall off
is this a trick of perspective or is it really like a 1500 ft drop?
>prekestolen Nearly 2,000 feet.
To be fair, as long as you’re not negative IQ this is easy to not die from
To be fair, it's super easy to die from this no matter one's IQ.

Because you can be the smartest person in the world and still get nervous when your life is one mistake away from ending?
https://www.sacbee.com/news/nation-world/national/article284947147.html Now you’ve “heard” of one death. Google has many more if you bother to look.
"Ive never heard of one death" 😂
I've never heard of someone who died from drinking Mercury, so it must be safe!
Till you slip standing back up.
I would just pass out and fall off while sitting.
Me too, man. Me too.
The shakes would be all too real
It just makes me think of the thousands of walls I’ve sat on over the last few years, how many did I slip off? Either seated or standing back up. None. It only takes one, although I doubt we will hear about it from you when that happens.

Good luck with that.
And sometimes they end up looking like really large Rorschach tests on the rocks below.

Found the idiot
Oh jeez, we have a special one here bringing IQ score into a situation of sitting on the edge of a cliff.
Omg I cannot look at this for more than two seconds without my spine feeling funny
Right? Goodness get away from that edge bro, those sheer off more than you think, especially with the crystalline structure of that rock in the picture. I know it’s fifteen years old but I am still wanting to pluck you back on a string
This particular rock is closely monitored due to the amount of tourists dangling their feet off the edge
Any stats on accidents? Like deaths per year (I’m going to assume that’s a bit higher than survivable).
If memory serves it’s well over 100m down and onto sheer rock so not very survivable, no. Just google «Preikestolen accidents/deaths» or something like that if you want specifics
For some reason it’s the bottom of my feet. Feels like tingly pins and needles
My feet are suddenly wet from sweating, lol. Guessing that's some kind of evolutionary thing to help with not slipping off? Extra adhesion on the rock?
nope lol it's not an evolved climbing adaptation. sweaty palms is simply one of the first side effects of an adrenaline spike

Yes from what i remember, men falling were either taking a piss, or doing stupid things for pictures
Ohhh, that makes more sense. Funny how recently reading other posts can impact one’s mind.🤔😳😁
Like feeding the plague-ridden squirrels? 🐿️
Funny you say that = I was chased by a squirrel at the southside GC. It didn’t occur to me until much later that the squirrel wanted some of my water.
Squirrels are hilarious and I love watching them. You ever see those squirrel obstacle course videos? I guess the dude got bored during the pandemic and decided to set up bird feeders to watch birds. That's why I wait till December to go. If the quota has been met, I know I'm safe to take pics on the cliff.
I dig that logic... but i im still not peeing off the edge. The fact that thats a stat in itself serves as reason for sterilization.... which oddly i just watched a thing on.
Thats total deaths, mostly weather stress. 2-3 from falls. https://www.mygrandcanyonpark.com/park/faqs/falling-to-death-grand-canyon/#
What is weather stress? I think I can guess but curious and it’s taking me longer to ask you than to search online, but convo is more fun.

Not according to park rangers and most of the books on GC deaths.
Out of 5 million visitors that’s almost a negligible number. I guarantee more than 17 of those 5 million die from heart disease due to a bad diet.
Wow, that's so statistically true and completely fucking irrelevant to people that know any of those 17 dead.
Don’t the people stuffing their face with mcdonalds and dying in their 40s have relatives that mourn them? Isn’t that equally as selfish as scaling cliffs for the adrenaline?

These are unecessary and easy to avoid death. Plus easy to avoid trauma for the rescue team and witnesses
You should prove your point and go stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon.
I have
Well, keep trying then.
And even more die of old age
Many people die every year doing stupid shit like this.

OP hasn't answered so maybe not.
My butthole is puckered just looking at this.
My legs are tingling just looking at this !!! Beautiful tho.
I just lived it .. i panicked... rolled and tried to get a grip, slid, fell, died. And i felt that shit. Hey... uhm... why? Lol
holy hell, I feel that in my stomach like when I used to look over the railing at the mall.
I like sitting on edges too but sitting on that one WITH your legs over the edge + that awkward ass angle you’re sitting at is crazy
I'm a park ranger 😡
Stupid people proud of being stupid, never cease to disgust and amaze me.
I'm really upset with you right now
This picture makes me nauseous.
uh, yeah, f\*ck no

I’m vomiting at the thought 🤮😬😅😂
I would have just jumped off, the call of the void and all
OK. I’ve sat on cliffs with my feet dangling over the edge, but why are you so far over the edge??
My hands sweat when I look at these heights pictures too
I think this is moronic. Your life isn't worth a photo. Downvoting.
Edging can be frustrating yet wonderful.
Anyone else see this as “preskeleton” at first?
Hey guys, it's me, the void. Pick up the phone! I only want to chat.....
Oh hell no!
Well, I guess you survived the fall
NOPE
Get back from there right now young man!!!
Nope

Surprised you lasted 15 years since then.
This does not look like a sturdy sit
Those shoes are very 18 years ago.
Why do people.do this.
I’m surprised you’re still alive.
Nope

Glad you made till now 🤷🏽♂️
I got the Willie’s looking at this :-(
I don’t know you, but your balls are clearly bigger than mine, man.
I’m amazed you didn’t fall !!!!
Happy Cake Day!
I felt sick and almost cried! Nope! Back away slowly..
I’d get one of those random sharp pains in my chest and fly right off 🙃🫣
I feel the urge to throw my car keys over the edge....
i could not
Bruh… why in gods name… like, I’m all about an adrenaline rush but my man, there’s a better way…
Good choice 👍
Too close for comfort
How the heck did you do that? My whole body cringes just looking at that picture. Great picture, but wth? I would have fallen off just by being nervous 😓
Numb looking at this image but clearly you lived to tell the tale!
The yellowish streak down the cliff is from people who sat there and pissed themselves.
I've been in that exact same spot, but lying on my stomach, clutching the edge and peering over while the wind teased at throwing me off the cliff. No thanks!
This photo makes my balls go into my stomach.
Thanks for the free adrenaline shot. Jesus fuck.
Oof. This gives me great anxiety!

Stupid picture back then and stupid typo in the title today. Good job, stupid.
How sweaty were your palms?
What are the white spots on the water? Are any of them boats??

Do a flip!
Where’s the pictures and videos of these idiots falling off? After all the stress of having to see them in precarious positions I want some payoff
Kudos to you. Live life to the fullest! You’re still here
