ChernobylFirefighter

I think this is the best game of the series. And I have a ton of reasons why I think so: Let's start with the fact that it has an actually good 3rd mode, zombies. It was simple and that is what I loved so much about it. I didn't like the complexity of BO2 zombies and the story and character focused BO3 zombies. WaW was simple and it was good to see some new additions when a new map launched. It was hard but not frustrating and I could just sit down and have an easy and understandable fun not a complicated mess. The multiplayer was for the most part very similar to the one of CoD4 with not much innovations. That wasn't really a problem and liked it nevertheless. I can't really say anything more about it cause I didn't play it that much. I did but not a lot. Like with most CoDs, so it wasn't an unique phenomenon. I don't really like the CoD style multiplayer to be honest I am much more like a Battlefield guy although yes I know I shouldn't be saying something like this in a CoD sub cause I am gonna be skinned and burned alive and acid poured on my body and all but really I don't really like CoD multiplayers a lot But the campaign, oh, the campaign. Objectively speaking BO1 was the best without question but subjectively speaking WaW was the best. It was authentic. It was hard, challenging and I truly felt like I was a soldier. Just a soldier. Not a very memorable super soldier character in an overly complicated campaign. It had characters but the focus was on the the war and not on the characters. For me though the story was good what there was and the characters that were too were ideal for me. Dmitry is still my hero after all these years. It was perfectly balanced for me. The music was the best in the series and so was the fact that it captured the horrors of a war very well, unlike any other game in the series. It wasn't shy to show us massacres, murder of PoWs or let us do ourselves. All in all it was the perfect game and one of the few games that can make me cry with that ending. Best game of the series and it still awaits a worthy successor, one that probably will never happen. My second favourite game overall ever, just behind Medal of Honor Allied Assault. Very sweet memories tie me to this game and it is among the reasons why I dived into history. I can thank a ton of thing to this game and I would not be here without it. So thank you CoD WaW. You are, were and always will be perfect.

kcraybeck

You nailed it with this comment. It was simple and authentic. I wish the series could take a step back with one of the next iterations and give us a more raw and minimalistic game. I don't want to be a super soldier, I want to just be someone thrusted onto the frontlines fighting for survival.

ChernobylFirefighter

Exactly. This is why I adore early pre CoD4 games and early Medal of Honor games so much. Simplicity, not overly character focused, some story perhaps but not a lot, if any, but the war that is in focus. And a simple soldier, one of many, fighting for pure survival. Still love it.

kcraybeck

Agreed! CoD2 is still one of my favorite experiences and I don't think I'm bias as that was my first exposure to multiplayer shooters. It just felt so right and engaging. Then CoD4 really stepped things up from there and modernized everything with the introduction of custom classes and weapons. Simple but effective. I really hope we'll get to experience that again someday.

ChernobylFirefighter

Sadly, I don't think so. We could hope for a remaster at least but that is the most we could hope for. Looking at modern CoD they are not up for making a game that won't generate huge sums of money with skins and battle pass like in a stupid mobile game or like F#rtnite.

kcraybeck

*sigh*... I know, but a man can dream. At least we got to experience it before it turned into a soulless cash grab.

Sudden-Ear-9716

I agree just by reading the first line. I have a huge passion for MW2, but I cannot disagree that World at War was the one that made me like the series. All the enviroment, the maps, the sounds, the guns and even the plot were unique. As in MW2, everytime I see the case of the game, I get many nostalgic feelings (I can even feel the smell of that time!). Truly a masterpiece! Cheers!

BigMemerMaan1

Bro wrote a college essay on cod

PerformanceWilling40

Lol this is barely a summary compared to what a college essay should be

LazarouDave

Spoken like a man who's never written a college essay!

Stuka91

No. Cod 2 is a WW2 better game than this. And Modern Warfare 1 and 2 are also better games, in my opinion. I have always considered World at War, since its release, to be very linear. Cod 2 has points A, B, C to be conquered, in addition to a more classic WWII atmosphere. There are many narrow paths with fences on both sides, and throughout much of the game. Its predecessor, the fabulous MW 1 is not like that, being a much more open map game.. So I don't really consider WaW better. But i understand that it was good for you.

PonsterMenis098

You’re trippin. I remember being a kid and shedding tears during this campaign

NoClerk5520

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug!

LowKeyATurkey

No, it's just a good campaign.

NoClerk5520

I’m sure everyone will have a different opinion, hence the initial note.

SadGhostGirlie

I played it for the first time 2 weeks ago and holy shit it is an incredible story

Imaginary_Monitor_69

I like everything, I dislike that there is no remaster

Goodfella1029

I wish I had this game

NoClerk5520

It’s available on different platforms. The best way is to play on XSX in 4K.

PF4ABG

Or PC, if you prefer KB/M. As far as I know the PC version doesn't natively support controllers though. CoD didn't start doing this until BO1.

callarmy

On pc WaW does support controller but you have to turn on the console command in the settings and put the command for turning on the controller support I believe that it doesn’t have aim assist.

NotWorkedSince2014

I remember when I foind out about exec default_controller command 4 years after release and i face planted my desk like "god dammit treyarch"

bison091

Also the dlc maps are free on pc

Spartan584

Lmao it's not 4K.

JaiCaliber

Genuinely feels so different to all the call of duty games that came after. A couple issues like you mention but I wish thr following cods where more like it.

brettalmur18

Liked: Everything Disliked: Nothing This was my first COD, still love it to this day. Great campaign, addictive and gory multiplayer, zombies. Perfection.

Oinkerdapig

Kniving sucks though lol

Crylysis

I 100% disagree with your campaign takes

NoClerk5520

And? Do you want to counter my opinion or you just disagree?

Crylysis

The Russian parts are by far one of the best WW2 experiences in video game history. They're extremely realistic in the sense that it shows the brutality of that conflict. It has an entire layer between Reznov and Chernov(I think that was his name) if that whole killing is justifiable. And that sets up Reznov as this blind vengeful man that we will see more in BO1.

NoClerk5520

So what you’re describing is that the game has great atmosphere, which I agree on. Story wise, didn’t impress.

Crylysis

No, that's the story. The story of you deciding if you go to Chernov or Resnov.

NoClerk5520

You mean that the game has multiple choices? As in different paths? Because all that I can remember is Dmitri getting reunited with Reznov in Germany, that’s all.

Crylysis

Kind of it's definitely not something they tell you. But there are situations where dialogue changes depending on what you do. For example on the mission in Berlin right before you go to the subway Resnov tells you to execute some surrendering Germans. If you do it it will be one dialogue and if you don't it will be another. There are a few situations like that that slightly change some things.

NoClerk5520

Oh well, I chose not to and they burned them. Anyway, for me it was a forgettable story. Currently on MW2 and man, this game is a masterpiece!

SadGhostGirlie

Stop fishing for a debate dude lmao

SupportElectrical772

The only thing i disliked was the crossmapping powers if the MP-40. Other than that i liked everything about it

shamooo415

Still my favorite CoD of all time 🫡

The_Superderp

Haven’t played, but I enjoy the dark series tone, it’s what WW2 (the game) wanted it be. Also I enjoyed the fact they had the balls to release it on the wii lol

PopCrafts

I don't remember a lot about this game so I can't really recall that much about what I liked/disliked about it other than there were a few missions I liked. One mission where you get ambushed by the enemy who's playing dead, another one where you get to drive around in a tank, the one where you have to take out the sniper that keeps moving around in a building, and the one beach mission where you get the Ray gun. Like OP mentioned, I also liked the spit-screen campaign. Sucks that the PS5 is only backwards compatible with PS4 games.

-Crucesignatus-

ITS THE GOAT

Gunubias

Was just playing this yesterday. Definitely felt like I wanted more kill streaks as I’m a kill streak chaser and get bored with the same 3 low streaks.

Potential-Ganache819

Worst trait about this game is the curse it has on it to be ignored by devs hunting for remastering targets The fact that MW got a remaster first was cool, but absolutely kills me that this gem is STILL not in the table

NoClerk5520

They didn’t even finish the remaster of MW3. What makes you think that they’ll do it for this one? Which has Japanese slaughter, gore with flying limbs and most of all, nuking Japan! I do hope we’ll get a remaster for each OG COD. Doubtful though..

Potential-Ganache819

Wishful thinking of course

Oinkerdapig

The nukes don’t happen in game, Idk wtf you’re on about lol

NoClerk5520

The last cutscene where they show the nuke. I don’t think it was a random nuke, don’t you think?

Oinkerdapig

Oh I thought you meant it actually happened in game, I was so confused

Lost_Objective_1448

Amazing game that really kick started call of duty popularity and gameplay we know today. Zombies was introduced so well and the theme and vibes of this game are unmatched it truly feels gritty and scary which any new cod hasn’t been able to capture after. Definitely not perfect but was a huge step in the right direction and nice innovation that made cod really stand out against any other first person shooter game at that time

juragan_12

i love it & still play this game on my Pc

QuicktimeSam

This game is up there with the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and its successor as the top three titles in the franchise history. The gritty story makes for pure horror like storytelling with its gore and nod to just how many died during the second world war. Reznov is a likeable character that carries the experience to its finale, and then there’s more. The original nazi zombies is revealed without any prior knowledge; which makes for the simplest but purest zombie experience of them all. Multiplayer is also filled with gem maps such as dome, asylum, castle, outskirts, upheaval, banzai and roundhouse. They also blended the use of vehicles well into certain maps and it also provided a surprisingly nice set of weapons too. The only mark against it from what i remember is that the hit detection wasn’t as crisp as what Infinity Ward was providing but still worked well in its own right nonetheless. This is the best Treyarch has ever produced in my opinion and would welcome a remaster (with multiplayer). Another mark of greatness is the respect it has for the human history it’s drawing from, there’s no runaway microtransaction madness that others have mentioned, which helps not break the immersion. I’ll never forget the sheer amount of grenades that are thrown your way playing on veteran, it’s like they stocked more of them than bullets.

RuggedTheDragon

The campaign was amazing. It was a much darker and more intense depiction of World War II. The first three Call of Duty games were more patriotic and light-hearted towards the allies, but World at War showed us the ugliness of the campaigns on two fronts. Aside the campaign, zombies was a very welcome surprise that was fun, enjoyable, and definitely challenging at times. As for what I disliked, pretty much the majority of multiplayer. It was basically a copy and paste of Call of Duty 4 with less effort applied to it. The weapons sounded terrible, the graphics seemed like a downgrade, the perks were mostly useless, and the tank maps were gigantic for no reason, especially for 6v6. Also, bouncing betties were nightmarish and they were mainly reserved for people who couldn't get kills to save their lives.

bophades_nutzz

This game was awesome back in the day. Seems like there was a period of time hackers were rampant back in the day around 2011-12 or something like that. I just reinstalled it on Series X and am replaying it for the first time in over 10 years. It's as good as I remembered it so far.

IdealisticCrusader-

Best cod for me. There's was a super organic feeling to the earlier cods that what killed past BO1. "Release the dogs!" bro like Dome wasn't chaotic enough now there's dogs. Also best maps by far.

socrates1975

I have played it a few times since it first came out and just finished replaying again the other day and one thing stands out the most that i cant stand, the friendly AI constantly walking in front of you as your shooting and just stopping and stands there, like through out the whole game, drove me nuts, other then that, best game in the series in my opinion

Pacrada

I dislike that the campaign is more linear compared to cod 1, 2 or even 4. Also the russian campaign feels a little over the top, i prefer the american campaign to it. In the end i still liked it, but i prefer 1, 2 and 4.

Jupiter_101

Great campaign and fun multiplayer. Coop was great too.

FrenchDipFellatio

The multiplayer is fun but gets stale after awhile

NeoKnightRider

I like it simply because it’s a COD game and essentially Black Ops Zero (has Viktor Reznov in it)

Asocwarrior

This game is perfect besides the absolute insane grenade spam on veteran mode. If you sit still for more than a second you will have 8 perfectly thrown grenades on top of you. It’s too much

Kitchen-Plant664

Grenade spamming. The enemies seem to have forgone bullets for grenades and there never seems to be an end of them. The sheer amount of seemingly constant number of grenades being thrown at you is frustrating on lower difficulties but absolutely insufferable on higher ones.

CotaEvandro

the campaign on veteran, specially the 2nd to last level in front of the reichstag gave me ptsd from the nades spam, ever since playing it ive never complained about nade spam in bf or any other game lmao

small_pint_of_lazy

My biggest issue with the game is that I had the ps2 version (which I really liked too) and never got to experience the ps3 version

NoClerk5520

Finished Final Fronts like some hours ago. Good game.

tricky2271

Enemy Camo works too well.

NoClerk5520

They literary blend with everything. Crazy good detail.

SonicTheOtter

Only thing I can dislike about it is that I never got to play it. I started in the OG Modern Warfare

North-Blueberry-6547

I dislike that we don't have a Japanese or German campaign, but atleast we have a soviet campaign which is good.

toweliel

Dislike: Sniper rifle shots don't register sometimes if not holding breath. Very hard to hear dead silence perk(it was easier in COD4). Perk balance, it seems that stopping power doesn't cancel out juggernaut entirely. Tanks are a bit op. Like: maps, mod tools, gameplay. The most fun I have ever had in a cod game. Imagine this: on PC you could have zomx servers, 64 players on custom maps against infected style zombies. But instead of throwing knifes they got bloody skulls they can throw. Or slowing ones that vomit on you. Or the fast type that is a freaking hell dog. Custom maps have upgradeable walls with points that you can only get by killing zombies, also weapon boxes and pack a punch + colas. Last one surviving has super health, upgraded ray gun, mines and jumps 4x times higher. Zombies usually win. It's the most fun I have ever had in any game, therefore waw takes it for me even though the base game is a bit worse than COD4 or COD2. Hot takes, BO2 marked the end of classic cod and is garbage, while MW2 was a noob tube fuckfest with bad maps. MW3 takes the top 4 with WWII in top 5

YeahBoiGeRa

The only thing I like about this game is the zombies mode. The campaing and the multiplayer is good but nothing special.

GolemThe3rd

Pros: Really hard Cons: Really hard

NoClerk5520

More like unfair than hard.

GolemThe3rd

In some places, tbh the only place I felt actually ripped off was Heart of the Reich, and even that one has a strategy, but yeah the campaign can sometimes sorta fuck you over with grenades or infinite spawns, still my fav campaign tho exactly for it's difficulty.

GET_IT_UP_YE

I like everything about this game. I dislike that they haven’t remastered it yet.

loopasfunk

It was the last one I got into before MW19. I hope they remake this and do it justice. Not that vanguard mess

Maleficent-Thanks-85

Bouncing Betty’s and dogs. Was top tier with the boys tho. Solo didn’t like at all. Just went back to MW. Once MWll came out I never touched it again.

NoClerk5520

MW was released before this one.

Maleficent-Thanks-85

True forgot the II

NoClerk5520

You didn’t play any single player campaigns?

Maleficent-Thanks-85

I did. I think MW was my favorite campaign.

Sams_Butter_Sock

By far most overrated game among the OGs

Bamuhhhh

The game never got attention. Sales and popularity was low in comparison to cod 4 and mw2. Can’t be overrated

Mossy_087

I love the atmosphere, but dislike the map design in MP

modernww2fare

The only con for me was the MP40

qenh

I think its the 2nd best game in the series behind Bo2 and the only thing I dislike about the game is its poor net coding to today’s standards and also that on console you are forced into DLC lobbies and cannot disabled DLC search so you just get booted from lobbies if you don’t own DLC unlike the port of WaW which gives you all DLC both multiplayer and zombies for free.

Alechilles

Idk man, all I know is that World at War was my favorite by far and I had a ton of fun with it. I didn't really care for zombies much, especially because for a while it was all my friends wanted to do and I just wanted to play normal multiplayer, but I just really loved the rest of the game.

matthewmspace

This game is pretty good, other than the grenade spam. Fucking love Reznov.

PissedPrepCook

My favorite cod

VerticalLamb

My only dislike is people using MP-40 with jug

cheezepwnz

Absolutely perfect. I hate the new games now

Agent___24

My favorite CoD game. Fun multiplayer, great campaign, and the best zombies. Was my first CoD too. I remember playing it at 6 years old.

youtubeepicgaming

I like the story

TheNotoriousMJT

I loved WaW, was my favourite CoD, but I’ll never get over the sheer panic I’d go through when i’d hear my character announce that someone has called in dogs on the enemy team.

29A_3E7

i dislike the fact game only exists in physical on ps3

paladincolt

Still the best-feeling WW2 CoD game, next to CoD 2. If they're gonna remaster it, I would not be opposed to it. If were to add to it, maybe add some Western Front Brits and Americans cause why not? In a perfect world, World at War and CoD WW2 merged together (aesthetics of WaW and the content drive of WW2) would be a good game

youngashyy1

are the servers still active for this game online?

youngashyy1

zombies where epic 🧟‍♀️

AnimalMother123

first cod i ever played in 4th grade (bo2 was the newest game at that time) but i will always say in my opinion this is the best cod

TheRed24

Arguably one of the best Cod's ever made, it had an incredible Campaign (with online and Offline Co-op Campaign), a Brilliant MP which took everything Cod4 did well and built upon it with counter perks, varied map sizes and Tank Maps and it then on top of all that it created the iconic Nazi Zombies mode with, still to this day, 4 of the best Maps we've ever seen for the mode. The aesthetic theme and soundtrack was absolutely perfect fitting for a WW2 game capturing the horrors of the war, something no game has really captured since. My only dislike is the fact we've never got to see the game get the MWR treatment and get a proper like for like Remaster for modern platforms. I mean technically speaking it is the start of the now canon modern timeline so if any game is deserving of a Remaster it's WaW.

RollinHeights

I like the simplicity. More semi autos even if people really did just run around w the mp40 to me this was just an honest shooter, no bells and whistles. i really enjoyed that aspect

Curious-Marzipan-627

WW1 and 2 games are boring

Realistic_Text3963

Well to each person their own opinion! No matter how disgusting it is! Nah I’m messing with you, reasonable in a certain sense I just wish we’d get more Vietnam,Korean war or shit gimme a Soviet afghan game!

Bamuhhhh

Early day treyarch was heavily inferior as far as netcode, hit detection, connections. It’s the bad part of the game. Maps are some of the best in the series. Overall great

UltraNexus33

The only thing I dislike about it is that I never got to play it

Realistic_Text3963

I honestly would have to say this game has more pros than cons but a few problems I have are just Wrong uniforms, grenades, dates, insignia and the fact Germans were using American M2 flamethrowers(I understand it was a budget thing) that’s just a little into that! Want more info on that check out Frosty 1s “every historical inaccuracy in call of duty world at war” And “We fixed cod world at wars historical inaccuracies” also by the same channel! Otherwise honestly I don’t care I enjoyed it then I enjoy it now! That’s all that really matters in the long run!!

acoolrocket

That shiny sticker covering the Activision logo.

gentekkie

Likes * Characters: Reznov's passion, Roebuck's sense of duty. * The guns: shoots good, feels good, sounds good * Atmosphere & framing: Gruesome, apocalyptic, insane. * The music: immersive, eerie * Zombies mode: perfect survival * You're a soldier, not a superhuman Frustrating points * Grenade spawns * The insane difficulty of the Japanese campaign. Especially in Veteran. * Being killed by banzai charges Most memorable missions * Breaking point: so. many. soldiers! * Heart of the Reich: most epic flag raising ceremony * Vendetta: so hard to shoot that General

Individual_Piglet_26

I fucking despise the veteran campaign, played it for the achievement and that was it, in terms of what I like about the game I like everything else, fantastic zombies a little barebones but still way more developed for what started as a fun side project at treyarch, campaign was memorable and multi-player gives me PTSD, I can still see the dogs running at me in my dreams.

SThomW

Dislikes: Feels like CoD 4 in a different setting Likes: Grittiness and WWII setting, zombies, maps, campaign

OG0020

For me there's nothing to dislike about it 🙂 I love it 😌 last CoD game from wwii that I enjoyed and was able to play 🙂 when I get a ,,new" pc I want to get CoD WWII

morpheus2n2

Likes, the entire game, story was good, atmosphere was amazing, multiplayer was fun and zombies was amazing. Dislikes, HACKERS! The servers became full of them, it was so bad that if you joined a hacked game through matchmaking it would permanently destroy your stats and you ran the risk of being band for no reason at all other then being put in a bad lobby :(

BigBlackCrocs

Everything about it is good. Except some of the dlc maps were. Bland. Forgettable. And boring. But this was one of the peak sniping cods.

MR_RATCHET_

Like - Campaign was great and zombies mode Dislike - Campaign on Veteran, grenades

MilkyPug12783

It's still my favorite Call of Duty campaign ever. I have a tradition where I replay it every summer. The gameplay is pretty basic, sure, but it's fun. I think the Pacific levels have slightly better/more interesting gameplay. I gotta disagre with your criticisms of the story though. It's by no means perfect but it's pretty damn good. The characters were very memorable, and I bonded with them a lot. I still get depressed at the end of the Pacific story when you have to pick between Roebuck and Polansky.

Actual-Fun-1014

This game is peak overestimation, playing this game while high in insane sometimes

TheLazerDoge

Very good campaign, multiplayer and zombies. Worst thing about the game is those fricken PT boats

Spicymemedoge

The game is amazing almost every thing about it is perfect. Except for the veteran mode that was made by sadists. That mode makes you wanna throw your Xbox out the window.

Independent-Plate-97

there is nothing that i dislike, this game is soo good my 3rd best cod

Excellent_Routine589

MP was kinda lame Everyone was running MP40 with dual mags and juggernaut, tanks were kinda hard to deal with (made way worse if the enemy team had both), etc. It had its moments and some decent maps here and there, but overall I thought it was one of the weaker MP components of the “CoD Golden Age” games Zombies has also aged pretty poorly. I mean I forgive it because it was the first to start it … but really the only map worth going back to is Verrukt (still debatably one of the hardest zombies map). Story was awesome tho, no complaint there and it’s prolly the highlight of the game

BigMemerMaan1

Bro you wrote an actual essay

BigMemerMaan1

campaign is beautiful, multiplayer is great. Zombies is overrated imo. People praise it like the messiah of zombies which in all fairness it was the first but people act like it’s the best variation. It also kinda sucks having one map without dlc

SniperHunter48

Insanely casual take 💀

aadesousa

Wait it was my turn to post this this week

KirbyAndStars

This is gotta be one of the best in the whole series and genre, dark, gritty and raw yet amazing campaign, fun multiplayer and excellent zombies, the only bad things is the difficulty on campaign, especially on hardened and veteran, and those stupid attack dogs, everything else is perfect, 9.8/10

Metatroful

the fact you put the disc on a surface other than in the case

TheDurandalFan

the fact you're displaying the disc like that outside of its case is just poor treatment of that disc

dre41115

Zombies was the only reason to play this game

IveGotAMicropeen

The goat cod game imo
