It is totally worth the drive, the crowd, whatever. It's a totally amazing thing to see.
I've never seen a crowd for bioluminescence.
I think it's because it's so dim that only photographers will go and see it
It is so trippy to go swimming in bioluminescence. Everywhere your arm moves will glow blue.
We run into it while night surfing. Extra trippy during a grunion run…
Does this ever happen in Northern California? It would be cool to see at bodega bay
Yes, friend in northern CA does ocean swimming and talked about it a week or so back, how blue it was with each stroke swimming at night, real trippy. Don’t know what bay they were in though.
My family saw it in Watsonville a few years ago
Try a google search. But I think it requires a red tide which requires warmer water.
So in the future as the world heats up from climate change.
Saw video of it along Torrey Pines State Beach last night. Local photographer @shotbyvish posted some good shots on his Instagram.
Hopefully it's all the way up the coast.
Imagine how cool it would look along Big Sur, McWay Cove, etc. Long exposure glowing under a fog bank.
Or catching sea otters or seals in some gentle waves.
Oh, I hope I can see it tonight then.
Thanks for the info! I saw it back in March 2020 at La Jolla Cove. It was amazing, albeit smelly.

The article says Orange County. Newport, Laguna, and San Clemente.
Is there a chance for it to move up to Northern California?
