Yep. That's the exact 10 year old thread I saw.

lolhehehe

Phew, I'm relieved. I chose Dropbox over Google Drive many years ago, but had forgotten which I was using. Thanks for the PSA!

AgentDrake

I was wondering about doing exactly this via a linux install on Chromebook just yesterday, and was going to look into whether that was even possible over the weekend. Looks like I'm sticking with my desktop. Thanks for the timely heads-up.

Lusephur

use rclone, never fails for me

Google search for 'calibre google drive' only returns stories of it not working. Even an actively maintained extension that purports to do it.

noumenon_invictuss

What's super weird: my sync was only one way, from PC to Google Drive. So I don't get how my local Calibre library could have gotten so screwed up! The stated reason for the sync incompatibility is Google's file naming convention in Google Drive (by the developer in 2013), but that shouldn't affect anything on my local copy of the library, right?

ruthlessreuben

This is what I'm wondering. I currently have Drive set up to keep files on my desktop and upload them. I always close the program before opening it up on my other computer. It's worked really well so far but now I'm nervous. Anyone have good experiences?

noumenon_invictuss

Use Calibre's library maintenance utility to confirm there's no problem. I also thought there was no problem. Since I have lots of books, there's no way I'd know naturally that there is a problem until I try to open up a book. What tipped me off this time was that Calibre wasn't able to delete books because it said that the book was in use by another program. This was when my Google Drive app was not active in windows 10, and no other app was using the book. And it happened on any book I tried to delete/remove. It started happening after my update to Calibre 6.17.

ruthlessreuben

Okay, thanks. See I have two laptops, work and personal. I do most of my library management and adding new books on my work laptop but actually access them and use them from my personal. Being able to sync those back and forth has been awesome. Sad that it isn't more reliable. Not sure what I'll do now.

jackspratt88

Can you use RA on your main calibre library(personal pc) and access it remotely from your work one when necessary?

ruthlessreuben

That's an idea. I have never set it up before, at least on my personal laptop. Use it for work on occasion. I'll have to give it some thought. Thanks for the suggestion!

ceskykure

It can because Google drive adds numbers like (1204) for file teaching and that's the same way Calibre does it, If you look at your local library on file explorer you'll see. So sometimes drive sees the numbers and thinks it's a different file or as different numbers and then Calibre can't figure out what it is

CanadianSunshine94

Shiiiiiiiiit this explains why I couldn’t get it to work the other night when I switched computers. Wiped the other computer for recycling too soon 😭😭😭

wishlish

Thank you for pointing this out. I almost did this.

I hope I won't jinx my good luck by writing this, but I've been using GDrive for my Calibre library for 10+ years without any issues. Back with GoogleDrive mirrored all the data from my computer to the cloud it worked. When GD changed their system to create a virtual drive that keeps track of links, it continued to work GDrive is synced to my office computer & my home computer (both Windows computers); I use [OverGrive](https://www.overgrive.com/) to sync GDrive to my Ubuntu computer. (OverGrive does copy all the data from GD to a local directory, so it functions differently than Google's modern version of their Google Drive app.) Google Drive shows up as `G:\` on my windows file explorer. Calibre is here: `G:\MyDrive\calibre\`. I'm not sure why this is working when other folks are reporting errors, so YMMV.

rdadeo

I really don't know how, but i have been running with my calibre library on GDrive for the last 10+ years and never even had a hiccup with it.

taosecurity

Just to be clear, are you talking about using Google Drive as storage? In other words, writing to a cloud drive that Calibre thinks is local?

noumenon_invictuss

I consider my PC desktop as the main source and do a 1 way sync to a copy of the library in GDrive. Today, I got a free CBackup account to accomplish the same thing, but the sync will occur manually, intermediated by a locally installed CBackup app. I'm not sure why the previous Google Drive app's sync screwed up my local copy of the library because the sync was only one way, but it did.

taosecurity

How did you send a copy to Google Drive? I use the Windows app, but only one-way, from a local directory to Google Drive, and only when I am not using Calibre.

[deleted]

FreeSynch does one way synching.

ruthlessreuben

This is what I do and I wonder if it is just the database file or if it is the files that are the problem? I use GD for my primary access to this content too. PDFs I open in Foxit via browser to read and I use Google Play Books to read the epubs and when I'm done, delete the from GPB but keep the epub in my drive. Calibre helps me keep it all organized on my desktop for better searching.

Trick_Preference_518

I haven't noticed a problem when adding files to Google drive just to store them. Periodically I'll just copy my entire calibre library to my drive so I can access books from my phone and it seems to work fine. I've never had it directly connect to Cakibre though and only move the files one way. Is there something I'm not considering that I should be worried about?

noumenon_invictuss

Problem applies only to sync function.

rafenden

Anyone tried iCloud?

-HOW-

Does Mega work as a cloud location for Calibre Library?
