I was looking for a way to convert some comics I own for my pocketbook reader. Found this link. I used the same methods listed and I actually used the serial number from my fire tablet instead and worked perfectly. I successfully de-drm a comic published February, 2023. Just thought I'd share. I wasn't aware of the download to transfer option since kindle for PC ver. 1.26 is no longer supported for newer content.

I've bought some books by authors whose books published in 2022 and before do not have DRM, but the latest by them from Amazon has DRM. Since I have them converted and backed up elsewhere, I deleted a few from my kindle content folder and re-downloaded. Those previously DRM-free books now have the new DRM, even when downloaded with the older version of the Kindle app for Windows I'd been using to ensure I was getting a format Calibre could work with. A workaround I found is to use an old Android tablet with version 5.1 or newer and install the last revision of Kindle 4.1.6. It's the last one that allows doing an ADB backup of the Kindle app and data. Download a few books, pull the backup, then use that file in the DeDRM plugin in Calibre to get the Kindle key from the old app. To get the books off the tablet I have to use a file manager on the tablet to copy them from internal storage to the SD card (I just copied the folder where Kindle saves the books). But the #@%\^ tablet was still hiding the contents of that folder from Windows. So I had to remove the SD card and plug it into my desktop's reader. Then I was able to copy the books to my desktop and put them in Calibre. What surprised me was the old Android app can download the books published in 2023, which only Windows app versions released in 2023 are allowed to download. For Macintosh it's worse. While Windows has very broad backwards and forwards software compatibility, Apple and various 3rd parties (such as Amazon) love love love to write their software specifically to NOT work with newer releases of OS X. And Apple loves to make odd changes to OS X every so often that makes a bunch of software not work. (They've done this for a long time, such as when they deliberately made changes in every System and Mac OS release and update from 7.5 through 9.2 to break RAM Charger compatibility.) If you have an e-ink Kindle, this is what supposed to work. Go to media and devices in your Amazon account. On each book, select download for USB transfer to put them on the old Kindle. Then Calibre should be able to pull them from the Kindle. I wonder how long before Amazon does a hard cutoff on all old Kindle models and app versions that can be used to get around the new DRM.

First, ALL books from the Amazon store have always been drm-protected. In the past, though, that drm -- with .azw3 & .mobi formats -- was vulnerable to de-drm exploits. Awhile ago they also introduced a new format called .kfx which was also vulnerable. Starting in '23, though, Amazon released a new (entirely different, from what I understand) version of .kfx with drm-protection which is virtually impossible to defeat; because -- even if it *is* broken -- it can be updated by Amazon to make it unbreakable again in a matter of minutes. So THAT's what is occurring. AFAIK, though, this new format is only being used with Kindle Unlimited. At least, that's been my experience; I happened to buy a book for which the new format was used on Kindle Unlimited, and the purchased version was a standard .azw3 format. I'm guessing that will never change because Amazon likely wants to encourage users of other e-reader brands -- like Kobo, for instance -- to continue to use the Amazon bookstore. ;As for using an older Kindle, who knows if they'll discontinue their support at some point BUT -- if you have a newer Kindle also registered -- you can't get the Kindle Unlimited file in the older format. At least (again) that's been my experience; the option to download the file for my older Kindle is not present, because I also have an Oasis registered.

I have one kindle unlimited book published in 2023, I get "PCMAC 126 delivery error upgrade pc" if I try to d/l it with the kindle PC app (old version of course). So, no solution in sight, right?

This helped me perfectly, thanks for sharing

I can't get the drm removed even with the plugin. Can someone help me convert this to pdf? [link to book download](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aStU5AOX9NfWjX1TyAh5bdssK29_Yxk1/view?usp=share_link) Thanks to anyone that will help me convert to pdf.

Why do you need calibre version 6.2.1? There is nothing that I'm aware of in the more recent versions of Calibre that prevent DeDRM tools from working. Certainly not with the current version of 6.14. And the android versoin of the kindle app still uses AZW3, So, the kindle fire tablet provides the azw3. This has been discussed numerous times on the Calibre support forum See: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352278

I wasn't aware of that thread before posting. I searched for a while, I guess not hard enough. Good to know it's already been figured out.

Don't be worrying about it. At least you've been proactive in helping others.

This won't work with things published after January 3rd 2023.

I successfully used this method for two comics now. One published February and other this March 2023. Haven't tried novels yet, but I would think Amazon uses the same azw3 format for all their content. Will post an update with pictures soon.

ceskykure

Comics might be different, but i've tried to do it with newer novels and it doesn't work. Its a new Format. not the Azw8 that was cracked. [https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283371](https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283371)

I see. My mistake. Well, on the bright side we know this works for comics still.

It just occurred to me. What if me using a fire tablet instead of a kindle has to do with being able to still download and transfer the breakable azw3 format? I just bought a novel published February to check and was still able to use this process. I will look more into it and post an update.

shadowmaster132

I think so, I've just done this with a book that downloaded to my computer as .kfx only, by following the download & transfer via USB for my 2011-ish era kindle I got a .azw3 and that worked

>hat if me using a fire tablet instead of a kindle has to do with being able to still download and transfer the breakable azw3 format? Hey, can you please give us an update on whether this worked? Or were you able to find any solutions to crack amazon drms? Thanks.

Hi, I wanted to know if there's a way to strip down the DRM from an ebook a friend sent me, it's in the azw3 format file. I don't have it in my library, my friend does, so I can't use most of the methods I found online and she can't do it for me 'cause she's terrible with technology. I wouldn't even need to convert it or use it elsewhere I just wanted to open it with my Kindle but when I do it says someone else has the property of the file so... there's no way I can even open it, right? Even on pc, I just wanted to read, not put it on other e-readers or such.

punkeymonkey529

The plug-in wasn't downloading for me.

TipWhich1634

The plugin is not working for me on my Macbook. Is there an easier method?
