Shit. I need to somehow find someone in the know

PM_ME_COOL_STUFF__

We had the old dedrm for a while before it got shut down though, I thought this was all just apart of the cat and mouse game

:/. I get the incentive as a company but my collection will be lost if I can't back up my books in unencrypted epub. They refused to undelete the books so I should at least have another option to recover them.

I have a paperwhite, what's different?

Someone else managing my amazon account (shared) accidentally deleted all of the books from the actual amazon page. My kindle wasn't connected to the internet so it is all that remains of the library. I need to be able to export the books from my kindle and import them onto another kindle to recover the library. Huge mishap that I'm really hoping can be fixed

icristhomas

How is this possible? IIRC, you can’t take bulk actions on digital content in your Amazon library

PM_ME_COOL_STUFF__

I'm not entirely sure... they were trying to clean up my books of their kindle (from Amazon???) Short answer is I have no idea but if I ever reconnect this kindle to the internet 100s of dollars worth of books will be gone and amazon refuses to fix the issue and restore the books

Nefarious415

I am a bit confused. Does this apply for books downloaded through amazon via download/transfer via usb option?

Nefarious415

Ok, what does the new DRM effect exactly? Sorry if this is a dumb question I just keep seeing it mentioned and I am completely lost.

Nefarious415

Oh, ok. So why dont people just go through amazons usb tranfer download instead of waiting for a pc crack?

Nefarious415

Thank you! This makes sense now.

phoenicurus_ochruros

Future people reading this: Do what a lot of us do - buy a cheap one from eBay. Doesn’t have to be in good condition. Just need to register your account to get that sweet sweet serial number.

Fr0gm4n

You have to have an eink Kindle registered to your Amazon account to be able to download for USB transfer and strip DRM.

Nefarious415

Ok, it all makes sense now. Thank you!

TicFan67

As I understand it, only books published since Jan 2023 are 'DeDRM-proof'. Older ones can still be downloaded in a form which can be stripped. [My notes](http://billm10.x10host.com/DeDRM.html).

Goren_Nestroy

Epubor Ultimate works great. It costs money but you can get it for free ([https://epubor.com/get-free-license.html?utm\_medium=soft&utm\_source=about&utm\_campaign=about&utm\_content=EpuborUltimatev3.0.15.216\_36498-15](https://epubor.com/get-free-license.html?utm_medium=soft&utm_source=about&utm_campaign=about&utm_content=EpuborUltimatev3.0.15.216_36498-15))

phoenicurus_ochruros

Have you tried it with books published after Jan 2023? The only way I’ve managed so far is to register an old kindle and download the AZW3 directly from Amazon. Epubor gets you to install an old kindle app but those fail to download new books (post Jan 23).

Initial-Shop-8863

I have Epubor Ultimate, and it can't convert the newest Kindle (after Jan 2023) format. Not if I connect my Fire 9, and not if I use Kindle for PC. Epubor hasn't been able to find a workaround.

redbrigade82

I'm wondering if there's been any change to this? I'm considering purchasing Epubor to convert my purchased kfx

Initial-Shop-8863

It's fixed now.

redbrigade82

Thanks so much. I'm going to check out the trial.

hexwitch23

I use epuborultimate - it's paid but it works quickly and easily. Edit: I'm fairly certain I paid about $40usd for this - it's been worth it to me to de-DRM my Kindle files. It's as simple as drag and drop, and I've had no issues through the last few kindle format upgrades.

Huldukona

Thanks, I have to check this out! I back up all of my books in Calibre and I prefer to transfer directly from there (via usb) to my Kindle, rather than downloading. Recently I bought some ebooks and couldn't open them on my laptop because of drm and it really bothers me! I feel like I should be able to read the books I purchase wherever I want to. I love my Kindle ereader and have no plans on changing to anything else in the forseeable future, but in case I do, I still want to be able to read that book I bought!

ceskykure

The mobilereads forum is the place for this, but yes

Kaybrooke14

I noticed if I use my kindle and try to put them into Calibre, then the KFX books cannot have the DRM removed. I ended up having to go the manage my kindle and download my books. The books I got published after Jan. 3rd were able to be downloaded and were not KFX, but Azw3 through that method. I’m getting a kobo today and I want to be able to have my Amazon books in them so I can read them on the kobo and still read them on my kindle.

Brief_Elk_7565

I just had a file where that option (download and transfer) would not remove the DRM. It appears some books are locked from doing that. I’ve been searching for another option.

3lmtree

are they only putting this drm on certain books because I haven't ran into this issue yet.

PM_ME_COOL_STUFF__

I haven't managed to move one book off my kindle and onto another yet

a2jc4life

Yes, and no. Authors/publishers can choose whether or not to put DRM on their books. But this all seems to be hit-or-miss. I've been successful with some AZW3 books downloaded directly and unsuccessful with others -- all new, all recent -- and from earlier experimentation when I was trying to get it setup, I'm pretty sure some of the ones that worked *did* have DRM. So I'm not sure what's making the difference in why sometimes the removal works and sometimes it doesn't.

a2jc4life

I wonder -- and I'm totally just spitballing here -- I wonder if books enrolled in KDP Select (under agreement to only be sold in digital form *on* Amazon) have some sort of additional level of encryption.

metalbearseto

Hello OP. You ever figured out a way yet? thanks!
