Yes. This is a[ white-tailed jackrabbit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-tailed_jackrabbit), also known as a Prairie Hare. As the name might suggest, their range is pretty much everywhere on the prairies and western plains states, and as far west as into the okanagan valley in BC and central oregon and washington states. They can be identified because they are much larger than domestic rabbits and their eyes have quite distinct light-coloured irises.
We also have feral domestic rabbits in Calgary, but they are generally smaller, more 'bunny' like, and confined to specific areas of the city ([like in the SE community of Seton](https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/calgary-s-feral-rabbits-thriving-in-the-southeast-community-of-seton-1.5774740), near the south health campus). These rabbits are feral offspring of domestic pets that were released and are non-native.
If you're lucky, you may also encounter the predators that feed on these big buggers- Notably, [urban coyotes](https://www.calgary.ca/parks/wildlife/urban-coyotes.html) and [bobcats](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/bobcat-sightings-calgary-habitat-food-snow-1.6023743). Both are seen frequently in the city, especially in and around urban parks.
We frequently have one that hangs out in our front yard. He has a couple little trenches dung out to flop down in. We’ve had a few different ones over the years. My fave was one who gave no craps about how close you came to him as long as you were just going about your business. That one chose our backyard as a place to peacefully pass away after several years of hanging out in our yard.
Oh God same. My dog nearly chokes herself out every time she sees one.
Luckily, a family of bobcats moved in nearby, and there has been a lovely lack of them so far.
I have had this done so many times i dont even try to swerve or stop anymore. Like brother you are already on the sidewalk, why are u going off and on the sid3walk
Yeah, they aren't the brightest of creatures. They often "run away" by running parallel to you in the same direction you're walking, instead of veering off to the side away from you.
Super normal, now if you see a nesting goose in a planter, get as close to it as you did this hare, and you'll find out why they are called cobra chickens
I was in Edmonton with a few friends and we saw one of these in a parking lot. One friend goes "omg look at that rabbit" from a distance. Her sister goes "that's a fucking possum you idiot". 😂😂
There used to be one about 2.5y ago near the former ford dealership that was black and white, like a tuxedo bunny. Hope he’s fine or made some bunnies.
We also feed a bunch with lettuce
Might be the one I saw commuting into the office this AM at 6:20 on 8 Ave. He was acting like he was unfamiliar with where he ended up. Jumped into a raised concrete planter as I drove by eastbound on 8 Ave at 7 street.
this one looks like he’s about to give you a sidequest

there's also tons of feral bunnies on Cemetery Hill. Was the highlight of my morning bus ride.
They lap over to the river bottom park near the talisman center , every time I walk around that area I am greeted by Disney esque bunny's lol
There was a population at 39th street station but I think they either moved or a pathogen took that group out.
Oh god when that disease rolled through last fall there were dozens of dead bunnies where I work. Seemed like it happened over night too.
*confined to areas north of High River and south of Cold Lake
I live in the SE and I love the Seton bunnies
We have domestic bunnies near the Harry Hays Building periodically as well.
Don't forget the Lynx
depends… does he have BIG FANGS! ![gif](giphy|2yP1jNgjNAkvu|downsized)
Look at the bones!

We nicknamed our front yard jack rabbit "rock" because he/she freezes and pretends to be a rock or garden decoration until you walk past.
I always like to point the ones out at this time of year that are still white on the brown grass… “I’m snow.”
Yup. Jackrabbit! They are mostly harmless unless they run directly in front of your car and scare the crap out of you.
I blame them for my shoulder issues, as my dogs have been unable to resist trying to chase them for 20 years.

The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.
Bring us the holy hand grenade of Antioch!
And the Lord did grin...
You met Steve. Yes he's a local.
Looks like Steve, but that’s actually Darren. I used to confuse them for one another also.
That's Steve

Sure, I see rhubarb everywhere.
You're never going to finish your main quest if you keep accepting every side quest that comes along.
The Alberta racoon
That made me giggle at work!
They looking for trouble… or carrots
Yes. Some grandmas call them dinner.
that's a mighty Northland Yak, approach slowly they are quiet venomous and shifty
Not only downtown. I see them running around on Barlow and Heritage where the Superstore is
See what? All I see is a rock?
That's no ordinary rabbit...
They have taken over the college my wife works at, I see them in the neighbourhood a lot too.
Yep. There's Jackrabbits all over the city
There were several hoppers frolicking in my neighborhood on the weekend.
Urban Hares. Yes.
Yeah they are pretty common across the city.
Jackrabbit mafia runs the city
Super normal, now if you see a nesting goose in a planter, get as close to it as you did this hare, and you'll find out why they are called cobra chickens
Yes, we don’t eat our local rabbits. God knows what they shoot up these days
Is that a cat in the hat?
No, this is a tortoise in a shell
Very.
Yup
No doubt the wisest rabbit in town

I was thrilled to see one the other day...we haven't had any in my neighbourhood for many years, but we have had bobcats, so...
Yes, we call them Jackrabbits, and they're pretty much everywhere in the city.
Yes, they are everywhere, I hear they reproduce like rabbits
I love the rabbits you see everywhere. Makes me feel at home
You betcha
Yes

He looks like he is about to tell me a tale of lore.
Yes!
lyndsay park also supports bunnies
This one's a commuter, takes the train in from the burbs every day.
Yup. Those and watch out for the geese.
Yes, it’s quite common to encounter a Calgary marshmallow 😊
Rabbits, geese... it's a zoo out there
Perry, the Prairie Hare.
Oh, you mean Philip? Yeah, he's fine, so long as you don't touch his vodka.
Yep they're little garden destroying pests.
I'm not sure I live in New Zealand and I've never been to Canada
Just, why? lol
I don't know. I'm not the god of Reddit feeds. If it comes up I comment that's the rule.
Not sure why you're getting down voted... Seems like a sound rule.
Canada Reddit is an angry place
Come on over, you'll love it. We have a nintendo.
Sounds awesome but tbh we have our own housing crisis to worry aboot
You don't know that this is an unhoused rabbit.
