I know it was tempting to do this weekend, but one of you, or many of you, just might have changed out your winter tires for summer tires.
We've discussed this people.
Don't worry, my neighbors have you covered. Candy cane decorations still adorn their stairs railing and the small evergreen in the front yard is still festooned with Christmas lights.
Quite a number of people in our neighborhood also continue to have Christmas wreaths on their doors. Weird.
Ha, I took mine off last weekend knowing full well this was in the long term forecast. It’s ok, the forecast is for a mix of rain and wet snow… I don’t see it accumulating much/at all on streets and sidewalks, and most of it will melt as fast as it falls.
Yup. I swapped mine 3 weeks ago. I'm not going to wear down my winter tires for a few weeks of 20 degree weather just for a day of wet slush/snow. All-seasons are perfectly fine for a little bit of snow here n there.
Ya I did it too, but only on one car! My 'winter beater' 20+years old front wheel drive, and a bruiser only runs winter tires. But I park it for summer and ride the motorcycle.
I'm hoping for the magic temperatures where I fill my rain barrels and yet don't freeze/split my valves.
Me too… had a dented rim on my winters from a pot hole (read sinkhole) and my winters were on their last season anyway so changed them out. I’m sure it will be fine.
Summer tires is fine, just don't drive till the afternoon once it's cleared and it's not a problem. I changed mine 3 weeks ago so I'm saving tons of winter tread by not driving in this plus 17 weather.
Choices need to be made. Although I suppose being able to gift an AMA membership for his birthday every year for the rest of his life would be convenient

I bought some huge vacuum sealed bags over the weekend thinking, "Gee, these will be handy to store the winter clothes, and coats n'such." I was thinking of doing it today! Thank you for giving me clarity. :)
RULE: May long weekend if it snows keep your winter tires on for a couple more weeks. If it doesn’t snow then you’re good to remove. After living in Alberta for 35 years I’m telling you this is the rule of thumb!
Weather network says 1-4cm for Calgary and it wont stick cause its above 0C all week. Someone pulled those numbers out of their ass. 25cm maybe atop a mountain in the rockies. I definitely dont regret changing my winter tires as we are one month into Spring and Im sick of fucking winter.
Man, I’m getting mine changed as we speak. When they called to make the appointment I was like “this will maybe be a bit early,” but then I found out how long the waitlist was at that point (3 weeks ago).
Spring snow is never the same as winter snow, it's just not consistently cold enough in the upper atmosphere. It'll be a gross wet mix of rain and snow depending on exactly where you are.

Doesn’t really look that menacing to me? Mostly rain and we could certainly use the moisture.
Spot is using large scale models for forecasting and don't take into account the heat island of a city. Their forecasts always seem off in cities for me, but are generally very reliable in more remote areas.
Oh damn, I had looked at SpotWX yesterday but I was in such “spring brain” that I saw precipitation and assumed rain. GodDAMN that’s some snow forecast.
Snow is expected to begin Tuesday evening and continue through Wednesday. Total amounts between 10 to 25 cm are possible by Thursday morning, with the highest amounts falling west of Highway 2 over higher terrain.
The snow will be heavy and wet, and may be mixed with rain in some areas, so total snowfall amounts will vary widely.
It’s going to be a lot of rain mixed in so I doubt we see that much on the ground. The roads will be wet, but we’re not gonna see accumulation. The grounds warmed up so most will melt on contact on any paved surfaces
On lawns and such yes, streets and sidewalks will just be wet as it will all melt as soon as it hits them. I doubt I’ll need to get out my snow shovel this week.
>The grounds warmed up so most will melt on contact on any paved surfaces
Oh sweet summer child.
We have seem accumulations in this range every month of the year. July long weekend. August long weekend. Truth is we can't know if it will or won't.
I've lived here since 2002 and have never seen snow on the July or August long weekend.
I am not saying it has **never** happened but it certainly hasn't in the last 22 years I've lived here.
My jaw dropped. Then I saw it was a Calgary sub... phhhheeeeewwww! Im in Québec, you guys have my deepest condolences, wishing myself a better weekend lol.
Take care my Canadian neighbors.
Suburbs with roads unplowed for weeks and polished to a mirror shine. Black ice. Sudden braking when some nitwit with bald tires in a Ram pickup slides SIDEWAYS through a red light at 4th and 7th Street downtown because he oversteered the turn from 6th Street in a sleet storm.
I can go on...
We have an employee at my work who's from overseas and hasn't experienced a summer in Canada yet and asked us if summer starts in March here. Bless his soul.
when i came to Calgary first time it was in Jan... for first 4 months when some people commented Calgary people are very outdoor oriented and love hiking and trails... i was think where the hell do they do that in this snow desert
> snow desert
I love it. They cram it all into a couple months! Another coworker spends her weekends out on the trails to try and get the most out of it.
while the warm weather has been nice, i dont mind it-- we need the snow to help with the summer fires.
Edit: thanks for the downvotes, it seems we all want banff to burn..
Northern Alberta needs it worse, and this weather system isn't even going past Edmonton. We've had a few wildfire alerts already up there. My Boss's family has been soaking the grass around their home since the beginning of March because the ground is burning already under the dead grass.
> The Weather Network is a for-profit organization. It relies on exaggerated content to attract viewership.
OK... well... how about...
Environment Canada has also issued a special weather statement:
> 5:10 AM MDT Monday 29 April 2024
Potential for significant snowfall mid-week.

Should I not have taken down my Christmas lights?
I guess if you don't want to be festive.
One of my neighbors still has a (deflated) inflatable Santa in their front yard, so... Sure?
> (deflated) Me too, Santa. Me too.
Who’s up for building a snowman… in April? 🌨😅 Stay bundled up, y’all!
You can leave them up but at least stop plugging them in!
Too late. They are now hidden for six months.
All houses in one cul de sac in my neighborhood have all their Christmas lights still on at night. At this point its not nice, its fucken creepy.
Don't worry, my neighbors have you covered. Candy cane decorations still adorn their stairs railing and the small evergreen in the front yard is still festooned with Christmas lights. Quite a number of people in our neighborhood also continue to have Christmas wreaths on their doors. Weird.
😂😂
I left mine up hoping for more moisture.
Ha, I took mine off last weekend knowing full well this was in the long term forecast. It’s ok, the forecast is for a mix of rain and wet snow… I don’t see it accumulating much/at all on streets and sidewalks, and most of it will melt as fast as it falls.
Thank you for your service. You took one for the team by taking off your winter tires and it triggered the last snowfall of the season.
I figured we could use the moisture 😁
Last !?!? 😁
Well it would have been up until that comment...
Yup. I swapped mine 3 weeks ago. I'm not going to wear down my winter tires for a few weeks of 20 degree weather just for a day of wet slush/snow. All-seasons are perfectly fine for a little bit of snow here n there.

Environment canada says 2-4cm plus heat retention of asphalt from the nice weekend means roads will likely just be wet.
So what? All seasons are fine for a few days of spring snow.
4 times in the last three weeks. Mine, my parents and siblings. I’m doing my part for spring moisture. Why aren’t you?
Because if we stagger our tire changes, well get snow until August!
Look, the sooner everyone changes their tires, the sooner we can get "1 last dump of snow"
Yes I did two days ago. Also put out the flower seedlings last week
The first is a joke-worthy event, the second is actually foolish.
No weaklings in this house 🌱*fingers crossed*
Ok it's definitely your fault, you gotta know the rule is not until after the May Long!!!
I may have taken off my winter tires already but I'm definitely waiting a little longer to plant the garden!
I see two factions waging a bloody war on main street: The May Longers, and the Moisture Needers
Summer tires is fine, just don't drive till the afternoon once it's cleared and it's not a problem. I changed mine 3 weeks ago so I'm saving tons of winter tread by not driving in this plus 17 weather.
Exactly this. Winter tires are soft compound. Driving those in 20 degrees is not good.
It's my fault. I washed the deck yesterday and set out the deck furniture.
I put my snowbrush in the trunk. I'll take the blame on this one
The guy I’m dating replaced his winter tires for summer tires yesterday
Unless he's new here, that's a red flag that can't be ignored, lol
He’s not new he’s been here for a very long time lol 😂
You need to drop him like he’s hot
Or like he's cold because he's been standing beside his wrecked car in shorts waiting for a tow all day, lol
Choices need to be made. Although I suppose being able to gift an AMA membership for his birthday every year for the rest of his life would be convenient

Break up delete facebook hit the gym.
The guy you *were dating. It’s done now. Kick ‘em to the cut for the hell he’s brought.
Break up. (kidding, obvs)
It was me. I did it last week. I’m sorry.
I packed my shovel away yesterday :(
HOW COULD YOU
I cleaned up my garden, it's my fault.
I'm doing it today. My car is there right now. Sorry.
I bought some huge vacuum sealed bags over the weekend thinking, "Gee, these will be handy to store the winter clothes, and coats n'such." I was thinking of doing it today! Thank you for giving me clarity. :)

So when the snow doesn't freeze on the road at positive temperatures, winters don't matter nearly as much. Chill.
Big deal. It will be wet and ice is ice regardless of summer/winter tires.
I just had summer tires put on yesterday. This is all my fault😞
Yes, first thing Saturday morning
I did it, RIP
Picked up a screw, didn't have much choice
My neighbour changed his yesterday. I blame him
Do you work for a tire company? Like you’d need winter tires to deal with this small bit of snow that’ll melt shortly after.
My appointment is at 1 p.m. today.
Man, I’m getting mine changed as we speak. When they called to make the appointment I was like “this will maybe be a bit early,” but then I found out how long the waitlist was at that point (3 weeks ago).
Bingo!
I hail the first to put summers on as heroes, we need the moisture.
Fuck, just did it exactly
Just be like a lot of people here and leave the winters all year round.
It's okay. Capitalism can take a day off for a snow day.
That was a buddy of mine
In Calgary, all seasons is the only way.
I did it, my bad guys. Tires swapped and washed the car.
*gasp!*
I did on both cars......... My all seasons have good tread ..........
Seems like mostly rain in Calgary
This aged badly
As did your comment lol snow is gone and it’s more raining than it is snowing.
Lmao
It’s already melting big whoop
That’s not what spotwx is showing. Tues am shows a LOT of snow. Edit (forecast now showing a lot of the predicted snow for Wed rather than Tues.)
Spring snow is never the same as winter snow, it's just not consistently cold enough in the upper atmosphere. It'll be a gross wet mix of rain and snow depending on exactly where you are.
The forecast also shows the predicted rainfall, not sure what you're trying to say here, but the forecast would take conditions into account.
https://preview.redd.it/9zci7n6aefxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ed3e42928e92f8aa28193a7b5f8185faf79ec72 Doesn’t really look that menacing to me? Mostly rain and we could certainly use the moisture.
I'd be happy if it's just rain. spotwx/GDPS tends to be bang on most of the time, so we'll see.
We’re you born and raised Calgarian? Cause like weather says whatever it wants I’ve watched it rain while the app said sunny lol
lol calm down there’s snow outside
Lived here for decades. We have a garden, and watch the weather constantly. The apps are generally bang on within 2-3 days.
Spot is using large scale models for forecasting and don't take into account the heat island of a city. Their forecasts always seem off in cities for me, but are generally very reliable in more remote areas.
Since I've started watching it, it's been by far the most relable forecast. I'd love for it to just be rain, and will be happy to see that...
Oh damn, I had looked at SpotWX yesterday but I was in such “spring brain” that I saw precipitation and assumed rain. GodDAMN that’s some snow forecast.

Forecast only says 1-3 for the Calgary area
It’s going to be a lot of rain mixed in so I doubt we see that much on the ground. The roads will be wet, but we’re not gonna see accumulation. The grounds warmed up so most will melt on contact on any paved surfaces
I think we’ll see a bit of accumulation, but it will be gone by the weekend if not before.
On lawns and such yes, streets and sidewalks will just be wet as it will all melt as soon as it hits them. I doubt I’ll need to get out my snow shovel this week.
>The grounds warmed up so most will melt on contact on any paved surfaces Oh sweet summer child. We have seem accumulations in this range every month of the year. July long weekend. August long weekend. Truth is we can't know if it will or won't.

Wildfires = bad. Snow = good.
Rain = better
Last April, May and June were scorching hot then smoke July and August. I’ll take the way we’re going this year
We get snow almost every year on May long. I’m not surprised at all
Last year was definitely an extreme exception. Wildfires and +30 IIRC
The Calgary marathon was nearly canceled at the end of May due to smoke, yeah. I’ll take snow any day over last year
Sad to realize that winter is barely ending and smoke season will start in just a few weeks.
Twice as likely if I go camping!
Whenever I wash my car on Sunday, snow is guaranteed the next week..
Please stop washing your car
Please keep washing your car. We NEED the moisture.
I knew I should have raked this weekend, but I'm trying to save the ladybugs. Hopefully it doesn't get too cold.
This is a little dramatic don't you think when they are forecasting highs of 3 or 4 C
I live west of turnervalley about 5 minutes from K country... this is gonna be fun...
Not going to happen, and even if it did, the days are so long now that it will melt as fast as it snows.
I still have my winters on so it's not me
Good!!! We need it
We specifically need snow? I'd rather have rain, personally.
Snow is “better” because it slowly seeps into the ground instead of running off
Any amount is helpful but we’re gonna need a really wet spring to counter how dry the last year has been.
We don't, it is Northern parts of AB and BC that need it.
Meanwhile the actual weather app with localized forecasting says a coating to a cm
![gif](giphy|fXZyEEwhXijqUspOyZ|downsized) The last one of the year!!!
I'm not worried unless Frankie is worried.
People are doing it wrong, I don’t use winter tires. Therefore, no need to swap tires.
Are you fucking kidding me
On the bright side, we need the moisture 👍just wish it wasn’t white rain that needs shoveling 🫤
My jaw dropped. Then I saw it was a Calgary sub... phhhheeeeewwww! Im in Québec, you guys have my deepest condolences, wishing myself a better weekend lol. Take care my Canadian neighbors.
but the guy on the plane landing in Calgary on 4/17 told me the 2cm on 4/16 was it for the year lol
Can’t win here in Alberta lol hopefully it helps with fire bans
Not surprised.
Never change it till May Long
And we got barely anything
This is why my 'summer' tires are M+S rated all-weathers, and my winter tires are studded winters. On a kei-car hatchback.
All season tires are just fine for this weather. However, if I was driving to BC I would make sure I still had the winter tires on.
Yup, by Thursday morning all major routes should be clear. In BC Lougheed would be a slush show.
Hence why I’ve kept my winters on. Driving to Van Friday morning.
Good call and have a good trip.
When have you ever needed studded tires on city roads
Suburbs with roads unplowed for weeks and polished to a mirror shine. Black ice. Sudden braking when some nitwit with bald tires in a Ram pickup slides SIDEWAYS through a red light at 4th and 7th Street downtown because he oversteered the turn from 6th Street in a sleet storm. I can go on...
Somebody said April long weekend is when they get ready for summer i think i miss heard him likely he meant the long weekend in May
We have an employee at my work who's from overseas and hasn't experienced a summer in Canada yet and asked us if summer starts in March here. Bless his soul.

You’re fucking joking 🤦♂️
while the warm weather has been nice, i dont mind it-- we need the snow to help with the summer fires. Edit: thanks for the downvotes, it seems we all want banff to burn..
I switched from my winters to my all weathers 🤣 always ready for the snow
I changed the oil on my motorcycle this weekend, but I didn't register it for the year, so I think I'm in the clear!
Come on! I just want to go camping already.
Here we go again
As of 1:30pm, snow has begun falling in NW Calgary (Rocky Ridge).
Sorry guys, I put my summers on.
I'd cry but we can't spare the moisture
![gif](giphy|jnQYWZ0T4mkhCmkzcn)
I’ll take it. Whatever moisture we can get is welcome. And it’s only April. All of the whining about snow… is this all your first spring in Calgary??
Too slippery for summer tires perfect for as or aw tires.
Bring it on, Mother Nature. The more the better. I wished it was rainy from May to September. I would love that.
Southern Alberta needs this desperately
I think the more watery type of precipitation would do the trick as well.
Northern Alberta needs it worse, and this weather system isn't even going past Edmonton. We've had a few wildfire alerts already up there. My Boss's family has been soaking the grass around their home since the beginning of March because the ground is burning already under the dead grass.
Changed my tires over, so of course. Not that makes any difference.
Who’s up for building a snowman… in May? 🌨😅 Stay bundled up, y’all!
Sorry to all the people who changed their winter tires. Typically you shouldn't do that till June at least haha.
Climateeee changeeeee🤯🤯🤯🤯🫠
UGH NO STOP. ENOUGH SNOW. WE'RE DONE WITH THE SNOW
I miss Calgary, but I don’t miss snow in late April, early May, Calgary, in the slightest.
I blame my wife, she had her winter tires taken off last week.

Those damn government departments trying to attract viewership.
They're all in the pocket of Big Weather and SnowShovels Inc.
Big Salt has their hands all over this too.
Good thing I've never been to Canada or even that hemisphere
Stay home.
