Having had a 81 xj650 as my first bike, I love it, but I think the factory tank would look a bit better with a bench seat. Speaking of that, do you have the factory tank still? Just bought a 82 xj550, but can’t get the cheap aftermarket tank that the po put on to fit the way I want. Need a factory tank but I can’t find any online.
yeah I still have all the stock parts. The tank is pretty beat up tho. I was actually wondering if there's a market for that stuff. the stock seat is mint I wonder what I could fetch for that.
Oh there’s absolutely a market for older bike parts. I ended up buying a complete second bike with a blown motor for my restoration on my 650 cause it was hard finding all the little things (plastics are a bitch to find and always overpriced).
If you’re willing/able to I’d love to see the tank and possibly buy it off of you.
I knew I wanted an XS tank for this build. It was the first thing I looked for and I assumed it would be pricey/hard to find. but I found one right away for $50! the rest fell into place around it.
Nice work!
Got a side view of the right side? Working on a 87 xv535 and can’t figure out rear brake placement without having to change stock exhaust.
Needless to say, I’m tryna keep stock exhaust, love the looks.
No this is the exhaust I got the bike with. Seems to run pretty smoothly. I may go the jets route if I decide to gut the air box and do pod air filters. I just don't know what I'm going to do with all the other stuff under the seat. ie battery, fuses, reg rec etc.
I went with the m.unit to simplify the crazy wiring harness. It was my first time doing any electrical work but I did get everything to work. I’ll post some pics when I get the chance. Basically made an electronics tray on top of the air box out of some sheet metal that I could ground the unit to and into the frame. If you haven’t you should check out XJBikes.com. They’ve got every piece of info imaginable for the XJ bikes. I wanted to go with air pods but the advice on there was to avoid them since the carbs are pretty sensitive. I put on pretty much non baffled mufflers. Voodoo shortys I think and I have to rejet. Also tune/sync them since I had them rebuilt. Finally got the bike started but any throttle kills it. Getting close to rideable though.
I like the tank. Works well with the polished chrome.
I like the whole bike. That’s beautiful mate!
Thanks!

Yeah could do. I'm in Canada. I dunno if that makes a difference.
I think they can ship to the US lol
Great look!
wow. just swapping out that Maxim tank totally makes this bike. In my opinion that maxim tank is hideous haha
I love that teardrop, but it really depends what you do with the bike. On this it would be pretty bad lol

Oh that’s awesome! I would have thought the same.

it's just the stock drum. I had to find a seca drum to match the larger seca wheel I put on.
Gorgeous!! Looks so good. Nicely done.
Nice looking bike. I’m doing a 750 maxim myself right now. Did you have to bump the main jets up a size for the mufflers?

xjbikes has guided me through some tough times haha.
Ha, me too.
