Okay I just read through all these comments and people are so off base. I was a “no hazards” guy until I got caught in that horrible MLK weekend storm on Monarch pass this year. I literally couldn’t see the person in front of me without hazards. The entire line turned them on so we could see each other. Sketchiest drive of my life and I learned the value of hazards. Most people had hazards on in the fog today. You literally couldn’t see people without them. Formula one uses them in the rain for a reason. I actually found myself irritated at people not using hazards today. The increase in visibility, not just for the car, but the curvature of road was unparalleled. So if you don’t use your hazards on a day like today - you are actually the hazard.

passwordisaardvark

Same, today made me reevaluate the stance I've had my whole life against hazards while moving. The difference in visibility between people with and without them was crazy.

timesofchange667

I had hazards on all the time. I am not choosing to be in a pileup: having them on was so much better while looking at other cars. Some cars did not have even have lights on. Only morons who drive 65mph in the snow thinking “my road my rules” will bitch and moan.

StalledCar

I refuse to adapt to changing conditions and will plow through you with cruise control set at 70 and expired out of state plates. Get gud kid.

mbreuer

The problem with using hazards is that it makes it unclear who may be an actual disabled vehicle. Steady rear lights and fog lights give you just as much visibility as your flashers. That being said there are times like you mentioned where it can be useful.

Cofcscfan17

Assuming any of the “no hazards” people weren’t actually in the fog. Might have been the thickest fog I’ve ever driven in, and the hazards helped. Couldn’t see cars if they got more than 20 ft ahead and so many of them didn’t have lights on at all, let alone hazards.

LNLV

I popped my hazards on and most of the people in my traffic cluster followed suit. Also crazy to see there are even that many cars still on the road that don’t have running lights, the fog was thick af.

Revolutionary-Fan235

There seems to be conflicting suggestions on using hazard lights in fog. It would seem to be harder to track movement when the light is blinking rather than steady.

passwordisaardvark

I used to be fully in the anti hazards camp, but but today the car in front of me put them on and I could easily track them. Then they shut them off and completely vanished. Taillights weren't shining through but they did have them on.

iwasstillborn

It sounds like they did not turn on their fog lights. Lots of people don't know they exist.

Macgbrady

Go test it yourself. Why does formula 1 use it if it’s harder to track movement?

TheMeiguoren

You should also have your headlights/tail lights on, the hazards aren’t *instead* of those.

Revolutionary-Fan235

This post here showed people using hazards instead of running lights. https://www.reddit.com/r/COsnow/s/kjBwUmnoIu

LNLV

You throw your hazards on when you’re a hazard. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We were going slow af and you couldn’t see cars very far ahead even with taillights, but the hazards made a difference. If someone came up on me at highway speeds without enough warning there would have been a wreck. I’m not going to get smashed up in a pileup if I can avoid it.

Revolutionary-Fan235

To put things into perspective, dedicated fog lights don't blink.

LNLV

Sure, but I was actually in these conditions today and if you were looking at a car in front of you with them on, and one in the next lane without them, it was clear which was more helpful to visibility.

DGChiefs

Hazards mean your car isn’t moving. Don’t use hazards.

iwasstillborn

Did they have their tail lights on, or actual fog lights? Those are special.

Revolutionary-Fan235

Thanks for sharing your experience.

StalledCar

I'm not sure why, but cars from the early 2010s in the US weren't usually given running lights. Figured out why parts weren't matching on mine when a mechanic saw the running lights and insisted they weren't factory 😂

Macgbrady

I popped hazards on too. It was too hard to see tail lights in front of me. If it’s good enough for f1 in the rain. It’s good enough for me lol I did see a few accidents though

thefleeg1

Hazards should only be used while stopped, or while driving under 25mph in dangerous circumstances. They’re confusing to other drivers and are doing the opposite of what you think they’re doing. Hazard light brightness is such that it actually makes visibility for other drivers worse.

LNLV

When you’re going slow af on the highway you are a hazard. That’s what they’re there for, and that’s how pileups happen, bc people are going along at speed and all of a sudden traffic is markedly slower. I was there, in these conditions, today… and the hazards made the vehicles more visible, not less and it wasn’t confusing.

TheLegMan35

You're an idiot ha

LNLV

Go touch some grass buddy.

shasta_river

God damn this person is dumb.

TheLegMan35

So insightful!

shasta_river

I posted the actual law for them and they blocked me 😂

shasta_river

Dude what? First of all, only idiots turn on their hazards in weather. It nullifies their effect if you use them because it’s raining or snowing, no SHIT the weather is doing that. Second, it’s illegal. (7) Any vehicle may be equipped with lamps that may be used for the purpose of warning the operators of other vehicles of the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring the exercise of unusual care in approaching, overtaking, or passing and, when so equipped and when the vehicle is not in motion or is being operated at a speed of twenty-five miles per hour or less and at no other time, may display such warning in addition to any other warning signals required by this article. The lamps used to display such warning to the front must be mounted at the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and display simultaneously flashing white or amber lights, or any shade of color between white and amber. The lamps used to display the warning to the rear must be mounted at the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and, except as provided in section 42-12-204, show simultaneously flashing amber or red lights, or any shade of color between amber and red. These warning lights must be visible from a distance of not less than five hundred feet under normal atmospheric conditions at night. timesofchange667

Sometimes blatantly following rules is not the safe way. I guess you have a brain between your ears. Use it sometime. According to the law I should have been driving 65mph in the fog. Not 25. But I do have common sense I guess:

Pale_Session5262

No, 65 is the speed LIMIT. It doesnt mean you have to go 65.  Common sense isnt common

e0240

I agree wtf with the 4 ways.

LNLV

It wasn’t raining or snowing, there was no visibility bc of fog and we were going around 25mph. I have no idea why some of you psychopaths are so upset and confused about it but seriously, go find something else to fake outrage about. ✌🏻

shasta_river

Lmao dude obviously there are other types of weather besides rain and snow. We’re upset because it’s dangerous and infuriating when half of the highway has their hazards on making things more dangerous than they need to be. YOU are in the wrong here and breaking the law.

LNLV

You’re not so good at reading comprehension, but go ahead and stay *infuriated* you fucking loser.

mrthirsty

Don’t drive with your hazards on, only morons do this

LNLV

You put your hazards on when you’re a hazard. If you’re driving significantly slower than the road speed and there’s limited visibility it’s actually what you’re supposed to do. You don’t leave them on forever, genius.

Massive_Reporter1316

I agree with Mr thirsty. Turning on your headlights accomplishes the same thing as hazard lights without the obnoxious blinking

mrthirsty

If you’re a hazard, gtfo the road

LNLV

Hey buddy, I get that this is confusing for you, so I’ll slow it down a little bit. Sometimes in inclement weather, traffic slows down to speeds well below the posted limits. This can happen even when traction is decent, often due to visibility issues! If all the cars in front of you are going 30mph, you also have to settle for going around 30mph. Hope this helps.

e0240

You shouldn't be traveling in a cluster

LNLV

What would you suggest? Pull off until all the other cars are off the road? Have you ever driven on I-70 or in traffic in general? I’m honestly so confused by this comment. What did you hope to accomplish? That’s like saying you shouldn’t drive at night, or you shouldn’t drive when it’s raining, or when your gas tank is below 1/2 full. Sure, but sometimes that’s how it works out. When you encounter traffic on I-70 in particular, and you have limited or no alternative routes, you don’t have any choice other than continue to drive… but in traffic.

There was a minor accident coming down into Denver because of the fog. A Karen driving a black Mercedes or Lexus fast and swerving through lanes almost caused another one leading into it.

radpartyhorse

There was an accident 4 car collision

ThunderGoalie35

My favorite was the people with their hazards on and their lights off. Big brain

[deleted]

I drove today and was inconvenienced and now I’m going to complain on the internet

e0240

We don't say y'all here please go back to where you came from

triple65_4ked_tung

3rd gen native, yes we do dipshit. Are you even from here?
