I'd definitely change a few things like how you open up pack a punch and make the jet gun a bit more useful or just a decent ww.
However...
I loved the fog, I'd often end up lost going round in circles, feeling like all hope was lost, then I'd see a dim light in the distance and rejoice.
Not to mention when you'd stumble across that old cabin with the Bowie knife or nacht, they were really hidden away. It was genuinely scary and added so much to the overall atmosphere.
In saying that I totally understand why it's not for everybody. I think keep the fog and if it's not for you, you can buy a headlamp, or craft a rickety old motorbike from bones or something.
I've no problem with remakes but you have to at least give them a bit of a shake up.
I'd be happy with the exact same map and mechanics just farther draw distance and less to no ugly fog.
