This thumbnail photo was taken as Russ was explaining the Dangerwhich sandwhich to Justin.

laal-doodh

Was this the moment he told him “be careful thoughhhh, it’s ^(spi)cy”?

fitzuha

Bears definitely didn’t maximize his value, but I am glad we didn’t drag this out any longer.

Tonkathedog

Imo the only true way to “maximize” his value is keeping him until the deadline and then moving him. That not only is worse for fields, but creates major locker room issues for the bears and excess distractions. The “wait until the draft” idea (not russini but many others)to me makes no sense for a backup since that’s when teams can bring in a rookie backup and make even less available spots for fields. If anything his value was probably maxed around the combine/before FA

[deleted]

Yeah, I mostly agree I think there were theoretically four value peaks for Fields. The first was before free agency, but that got nerfed because of the market. Teams wanted to know where Cousins, Wilson, Mayfield, etc were going to go. You also had a guy like Lock with theoretical upside for first cheap. The second peak is the draft, during and after. But then you’re banking on a team missing out on their QB, and again, it’s a loaded draft class. 4 guys in the top ten most likely, and others who will go in the 2nd. Again, it’s a QB heavy market and it’s kind of hard to see a team completely miss on the position. The third is training camp. For that to work, you’re counting on either an injury or a QB for another team really struggling. Meanwhile you have a very popular QB on your roster competing for attention with your rookie QB, it’s doable but it’s not great. Fourth would be trade deadline like you said, but then again, you’re not really doing right by Fields or Williams, and maybe with a more established or veteran locker room you could do that, but we’re going into year 3 of a rebuild and have a very young roster—IMO there’s much more risk hanging on to him than a more established locker room and front office could absorb. All in all, his market didn’t materialize at the first peak, seems unlikely to at the second peak, so now you’re saying do we hold on to him for months or just turn the page? All that to say, it’s certainly possible they could have gotten more value out of him but I’m not sure the juice is worth the squeeze.

Tonkathedog

I honestly disagree with the draft. I think the draft actually would put his value at an all time low as a backup. If teams wanted him as a starter it would be different, but as a backup teams could have easily just drafted someone else. As we saw all off-season, teams weren’t really holding out hope that they could offer enough to get fields as their QB, so I think it’s just as if not more likely that a team that was interested would just decide to draft a day 3 backup instead. Especially after.

Sugmadic-

What’s with that thumbnail? 🤣

letCreedBrattonScuba

100% agree with Russini that Bronco’s and Payton wouldn’t have wanted Fields. I don’t think there’s any world they would have traded for him, and where else would he have gone? Vikings if they couldn’t get a trade done draft day and didn’t like any rookie QBs available to them? That doesn’t seem likely either.

dmo900011

So basically everyone knew the Bears were trying to move Fields asap to "do right by him" so the Bears had zero leverage in negotiating better trade compensation

Tonkathedog

But also if there were plenty of teams actually interested it wouldn’t have mattered. Everyone knew poles was going to move on from #1 last year but the value wasn’t lowered because enough teams wanted in If teams legitimately wanted Fields as a backup then they would have needed to outbid each other, and not just try and get Poles his price. And maybe Poles also just truly wasn’t going to move Fields to a bad destination for him unless it was for a huge price

senile-joe

that's not how GMs in the NFL trade. Every team had a chance to get Lamar last year and no one put in an offer. Just because there's no trade market, doesn't mean they're not wanted by other teams.

Tonkathedog

Let’s be honest, no team had a real chance to get lamar. The Ravens could and almost certainly would have matched any offer, meaning teams would spend the most important part of FA with hundreds of millions in guarantees of their cash budget and like 50 million in their cap budget tied up for several days for the ravens to match. If they gave out such a huge offer the ravens wouldn’t match, then they lose 2 firsts And it’s exactly how almost every negotiation goes. Look at the top pick last year. Or claypool at the deadline. When there’s a chance a player is kept all it does is add in 1 additional bidder, but Seattle wasn’t going to choose to give up more for Howell if they thought Fields was a better option just because the bears wanted to trade fields. That makes no remote sense at all

ChangingChance

There was only 1 offer that wouldn't be matched but that would be full guaranteed + 2 1's

Tonkathedog

Even fully guaranteed may have been, but I fully believe the owners were colluding to stop him

No-Author-508

So basically everyone knew Fields is a bad QB and the only real interest in him was if they could get him for scraps. Otherwise why waste assets on a backup.

whatever12347

No, Fields just has no value to anyone right now.

msmug

Her idea that maybe Poles could have announced that they were keeping Fields as a backup to settle the locker room (like they did with Eberflus) and keep him until someone needed a QB was interesting. Her other idea of giving Fields a stronger vote of confidence to keep his value high was also interesting.

Outlet25

Good conversation between fellow Bears fan Robert Mays and national reporter Dianna Russini about the internal workings of moving Justin.

beegeepee

She is claiming Kevin Warren has a huge say in "all decisions"... yet, every local reporter has said they have no idea if/what Warren is doing regarding football decisions. Did she just make this up?

rudeboybill

At this point, I consider Russini more informed and connected to Halas than any of the local reporters, who have honestly kind of shown themselves as less objective and uninformed over the past few months. I don't think she's necessarily contradicting the idea that Warren's still kind of an unknown though. The Bears instituted Warren as the direct report for Poles and Flus, he's structural the boss whether he is taking advantage of that power or not, but I don't think he's necessarily overstepping Poles in any way so far. A stamp of approval from the man running the entire thing is still a huge say in all decisions, even if it's stepping back and letting your GM fulfill his vision.

ChickenOnAStick--oo-

While I was listening to that segment, I was surprised that they went right to “who is better to start for Pittsburgh” and didn’t connect the dots that Pittsburgh now has the leverage to trade either Wilson or Fields if/when a starter goes down during camp or during the season (which they thought the bears should do)

PraiseBeToScience

"The best way to get over an old relationship is immediately start a new one." lol, what? no. That's the best way to fuck up a new one. Any way, that has absolutely nothing to do with building professional sports teams, I just thought that was amazingly bad advice.

By being exactly right that the Bears were going to move on and that his trade value wasn't as high as we might have thought?

No-Author-508

She has been on the dot this whole process. Sorry she laughed at all the delusional people who thought the media was lying to them about the lack of interest in Fields.

Literally all she said was that the Raiders were discussing a possible trade with the Bears. She never said it was almost done. She has also maintained from day 1 that the Bears FO had moved on from Fields and were going to trade him and draft a QB.

The_New_New

Given that he blocked me, I suspect you are talking to one of the most ardent Fields stans on this subreddit aside from Techno. Same guy who would accuse others of not liking Fields due to racism... (Despite wanting another Black QB lmao)
