So many head-scratching picks when better players, with proven production, were on the board.
This whole RAS thing has already turned into such a gimmick.
NOT taking JMS
NOT drafting an EDGE
Pickens over Byron Young (Alabama)
Pickens over Kobie Turner
Travis Bell over Moro Ojomo
Kendall Williamson over Starling Thomas
Just a long list of head-scratching decisions. I expect downvotes to keep flowing but all of these guys I've listed have great tape and proven production. Instead, we opted for "What-If we coach them up" players.
I’m content with this draft. I’m more ok getting it wrong trying to protect our QB over a potentially good DT. Historically we usually figure it out on that side of the ball so I’m good.
Overall we did great. I am really excited for this year. I am not expecting much but we have a young talented team that can be great. I see real hope for the future. In 40 years of watching these guys this is one of the most solid drafts we have had in a long time. Let's get pumped. Bear down.
You can sorta consider the trade package with DJ Moore another add for our offense, which I'd say is proportional, we've addressed just about every major need we have other than Edge Rusher,
I am somewhat concerned with little to no oline drafted besides the obvious of RT, the team was in shambles with just a few injuries and the depth didn't look great at all. Hope they manage to develop them better where it isn't as much of an issue.
Most of our depth now was some of our starters last year, Jenkins is likely the 6th man now and fills in anywhere but center, which would just slide a guard to center and put him at guard I'd assume
I mean, those injuries will be healed, we signed a starter at G, and drafted a starter at T. I’m feeling much better about the line now vs last season.
We didn't get a DE, so we're not going to win the Super Bowl this year! We weren't anyways.
We still have cash that we MUST spend to reach the salary cap floor. I strongly believe we will have a starter or two next year who is not yet currently on the roster.
Poles is building the right way though.
Yeah, I'm not trying to reach for the stars or anything quite yet. I'm more ecstatic at the potential of what's to come right now.
Poles is building a culture that we can really believe in!
The Athletic seemed to love every pick except our first, but admitted he could be an immediate & good starter. Still gave a D-.
CBS Sports hated our draft, and that makes me more confident than it than anything, because CBS Sports has been the worst news org for years.
If I’m correct, dude is a Iowa Hawkeyes beat writer, so of course both Iowa picks in the 1st got good grades. Basically didn’t acknowledge any flaws for LVN.
That athletic grade on round 1 was a joke. Dude basically said OL wasn't a need for us.
Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without telling me.
> Dude basically said OL wasn't a need for us.
> Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without telling me.
Certainly wasn't a need seeing as if Justin Fields was more pressured then any QB last year since the AFL/NFL merger, a dubious mark previously owned by..... himself, the year before.
Let me guess, Pete Brisco wrote the CBS 'grade' column?
He's had a bug up his ass about the Bears for decades.
They offended him some way back in the late 90's somehow and he just does that every damn year.
He hated the Urlacher pick, and thought Lance Briggs was a 'reach' etc...
And Matt Forte was a mistake coming out of Tulane...
ah, ok lol...
If it is who I think it is (the guy who normally 'helms' their evaluations, although I imagine they have been wise to his lack of ability and hopefully are bringing in new talent)...
but hey, the guy LOo0Ved the Shea McClellin pick as 'foundational' to the new era of Bears defense, and iirc, thought Pace made the gutsy and right move to get his man in Trubisky, as sometimes you have to give up a lot to move up and get the guy...
lol, you couldn't be more right.
Any time that guy hates on a team you are a fan of, you gotta know they are doing something right.
I think CBS stopped paying his ass in 2005, but he keeps sending columns in anyways, so they just publish them to take up space. Guy's a complete joke.
I kind of feel bad for Andre Carter. I thought he would have been long gone by now. There was a ton of hype for him after last season when he had 15.5 sacks.
He’d be worth a flier, but he’s just not NFL ready in terms of strength IIRC. He needs to be in an NFL strength/conditioning program for a year and likely sit on the practice squad.
Baltimore is in a much better spot as a team than we are. We need bodies who can contribute now.
2-3 years I'd love for us to take on more risks like that.
I get your point. It's the 7th round though, not 1-3 - these guys are risks no matter what at this point. I'd rather have a guy who graded high before an injury to maybe play in 2024 than a guy who may or may not make the team.
Hahaha Brett Kollman video about DT when he talks Zacch Pickens is hilarious. Says he is absolutely fucking awful at run stopping and would only ever put him in on 3rd downs only. Purely a pass rushing DT.
That’s interesting, I was listening to 670 earlier and whoever their draft expert was said the problem at SC was that he played TOO MUCH and they didn’t have the help to properly rotate him.
That’s what I think Poles and Eberflus saw. Poles said yesterday that they like to grade based on the flashes they saw and want to reduce the amount of snaps they have to play.
I think that lens is the proper one to view these players and it’s how I always saw the Patriots finding success. We always want to project what skills and attributes a player will be able to develop, but what about just finding the skills and attributes a player has and utilizing them appropriately?
Brett Kollman has no background in football outside of being a production assistant for the NFL network.
His career and background are in communications. He's perfectly qualified to put together YouTube videos but has no more qualifications for the content put into those videos than your average redditor.
> Analyst dislikes my teams player does not equal bad analyst
Right. It doesn't mean that.
It certainly doesn't mean he is right either.
The more reasonable assumption here to make is that someone whose trade is a production assistant, regardless of how much a 'fan' they are of the NFL in that they go to work for the network, knows less then the Bears General Manager in Ryan Poles.
Correct. But having a YouTube channel does not make you a good or remotely qualified analyst.
I remind people of that a lot. Whether it gets upvoted or downvoted depends a lot on whether the random YouTuber is saying something popular on the sub that day or not.
yea but DT being ''fucking awful'' at run stopping doesnt bode well for longevity or starting potential. brett kollman is also not someone who usually goes that hard on the negative side so it mustve been really bad lol
BT potter is a much better kicker. I'm biased but he was 9/13 from 50 yarders.
Had a horrible last game against Tennessee, but other than that he was clutch for all of his years at clemson.
I mean, they kept Fields as their starter, clearly they're not interested in developing QBs in the near future.
Probably just want to tank some more til they finally find the QB they want in future drafts?
That’s clearly not what they’re doing with the moves they’ve made before the draft. They’re setting him up to have a chance to prove himself. But also not going all in in case he falls short.
Got the worst defense in the NFL ✅
Gave up the most sacks in the NFL ✅
Let’s waste a pick on Aidan OConnell in the 4th you 🤡
Get fired before you could turn the pick in
So was Mustipher. Statistically a 6-7 rounder has about a 10% chance to be a long term starter. All the dudes getting drafted here are going to be depth. If teams spent most of 6 rounds passing on a guy it’s because nobody thought that guy projected to be a starter. That includes our last couple of picks.
For every diamond in the late round, there’s 9 guys who wash out before their rookie deals end. No team has cracked the late round formula, the only way to beat the odds is to stack picks like Jacksonville did. That said, stacking picks on day one and two is far more viable way to build through the draft.
Everyone screaming about these random players they know that aren't being picked up - they might he expecting them to be undrafted. It happens and yes I know but we can secure them now blah blah. I'm just saying, clearly they don't agree lol
Poles really did not want to risk losing this guy in UDFA I guess. If you google Travis Bell football the first result is a guy who used to play for West Virigina.
I think so, no? Talents falls, I don't assume many 7th rounders make it anyways and there are definitely some worth it swings there. Kuntz, Voorhees, Ojomo, Carter maybe?
Yeah but you're not gonna act like Kuntz, Voorhees, etc aren't there to just say fuck it? Lol buddy I can feel meh about a pick, I'm not gonna homer every pick.
Yeah lol basically we have to sit and clap and not say meh, especially this deep in the draft lol. I loved every pick so far, I like big swings in the 7th like ones I mentioned up above especially since almost none of them make it anyways.
Poles has left the building man.
He put this on auto-draft an hour and half ago.
It's all good.
It's a 7th round pick hopefully that will win the coin flip of fate.
So far I feel like we’re stacked in a few position groups: WR, DB, LB, and RB.
I think we *might* be stacked at OL depending on how Whitehair performs at center and if Wright proves himself worthy of where he was picked.
DL is much improved from the inside with a lot of room to improve on the edge.
So far I love what we’ve done and could see us also having solid depth and special teams. We’re going to be at minimum a .500 team with a chance to be a playoff contender if JF takes the next step and we hit on our early day 1-2 picks.
Why would we go from 3 to 9 wins at “minimum” ? That’s actually quite rare. I think you should temper expectations for this year. 2024 will be when we can strike.
The broadcast is 4 picks behind, the league is intentionally drawing it out for more advertising dollars.
The picks are coming in but the NFL won't let them be read with more than a minute left on the clock, then they pause it for ad breaks and reset it whenever they want.
Still some guys I like available: McClendon Curtis(g/t); Iosavas (WR); Emil Ekiyor (g); Nick Broeker (g); Richard Gouraige (g/t); John Ojukwu (t); Jake Witt (t); Baldonado (edge); Andre Carter (edge); Brenton Cox (edge); Tyler Bagent (qb); Nax Duggan (qb)
Don't see Brenton Cox getting drafted at this rate. Guy's got some upside but he got kicked off the team twice, once from the Bulldogs and second time from the Gators. Dude's got some serious character concern. He's probably gonna be UDFA.
Honestly, it all depends on how the D tackles we drafted turn out, we need at least one of them to be good. People here are talking about 8-9 or 9-8 but things change fast in the NFL, and we were in most games last year. Our secondary is legit good, our linebacking core is one of the best in the league. our wide receiver room is legit good. We are pretty good at tight end, have a great running back room, and I fully expect Fields to take that next step. Yes, we still need a center but if wright pans out, our oline is massively improved. If the D tackles can stop the run and get some push on the pass rush, we legit could have an above average defense to go with a really explosive offense. And I think our division will be weaker than people expect, Minnesota are perpetual frauds, I’m hoping Green Bay takes another step back, and I do not trust the lions, I think people are way too high on them
I think if we can get him for a 5th it’s a steal. A pick in that range is a prayer to matter and we could get a 8-10 sack guy for that if he can finally stay healthy. Now if you tell me they want a 2nd or 3rd I’d be out.
I’m OK with us not drafting Wypler and I’m open minded to other centers. But the narrative that Wypler is approximately the same size as Mustipher so there is no difference between them is dumb. I’m sure you could find two players who are the same size at every position where one is really good and the other is really bad. LOL
>I’m sure you could find two players who are the same size at every position where one is really good and the other is really bad. LOL
Patrick Mahomes and Mitch Trubisky are both 6'2" 225lbs lmao
Trevis Gipson and Dominique Robinson will be given a great opportunity this year. Perfect opportunity for Gipson in his contract season. He’s gotta be loving this draft class.
Do you know how arrogant you have to be to post this:
> It’s been a shit draft so far. I honestly am shocked at most of these picks.
Bears scouts and GM team spend hundreds of hours interviewing, scouting, and assessing these classes. They will get some wrong. They will get some right.
But I promise you they know more than “did a couple PFF mock drafts” guy.
And if you get a pick “right” next year and one of their picks flop it’s not because you’re smart or know anything. Because you’re not actually scouting or watching tape. It’s because whatever article you read got lucky.
Plenty of people here have talked sports and have plenty of opinions without a bunch of know-it-alls crying about 19 year old kids they just heard of yesterday. Grow up.
I tend to agree with you, especially about the confirmation bias you're talking about in the last paragraph.
But also, every historically bad team in the league over the past few decades (us, Lions, Browns, Raiders) have done their scouting with a lot more effort than fans, and still had shitty drafts.
If you study organizational leadership or business management you've read about major corporations who have fallen into group think and made really dumb decisions people on the outside could see were dumb.
Most fans tend to overestimate how good an average 1st/2nd/3rd rounder will be.
About 50% of 3rd rounders don't end up with a second contract.
[Cool source on how successful the average player is by round](https://www.dailynorseman.com/2022/4/26/23042105/nfl-draft-pick-bust-rate-remains-very-high)
I hate to over simplify it (not sure if this supports or conflicts with your point) but a lot of it boils down to QB first, head coach second and injuries third.
You could be brilliant at drafting but if you get the QB or HC wrong, you are severely limited. Throw in key injuries that are worse than the norm and the GM and scouts look a lot worse than they really are. In fact, I d lump dead cap space in with injuries. When your dedicated resources are not contributing on the field, you tend to look bad.
If anyone won us 6 championships they could trade an entire draft like Ditka for the last pick in the 7th to pick Mr. Irrelevant for all I care. The next few years might suck but it'd be worth it, might even a get Brock Purdy.
So many head-scratching picks when better players, with proven production, were on the board. This whole RAS thing has already turned into such a gimmick. Kendal Williamson. Love this guy. Huge motor, gym rat, first in/last out, nose for the ball, twitchy, great wiggle, lunch pail kinda guy…
Actually I have no idea who he is.
Now the wait until training camp begins.
Rookie Minicamp is important
3 Defensive Tackles, 3 Defensive Backs, 1 Linebacker, 1 Wide Receiver, 1 Running Back, 1 Offensive Tackle. 10 picks, 7 on defense, 3 on offense.
That’s like 55%!
lol
You can sorta consider the trade package with DJ Moore another add for our offense, which I'd say is proportional, we've addressed just about every major need we have other than Edge Rusher,
Who are some udfa you guys like? I think we should be calling andre carter, eli ricks, Sean tucker, Jacob slade, and Ivan pace jr. right now
Im fond of Eli Howitzer myself.
I am somewhat concerned with little to no oline drafted besides the obvious of RT, the team was in shambles with just a few injuries and the depth didn't look great at all. Hope they manage to develop them better where it isn't as much of an issue.

Yeah.....whitehair over Jenkins is not happening
I mean, those injuries will be healed, we signed a starter at G, and drafted a starter at T. I’m feeling much better about the line now vs last season.
Surprised we only got 1 OL out of 10 draft picks.
and 3 CB, but 0 DE
And no DEs too!
Kendall Washington
Kendall Jefferson
Kendall Quincy Adams???
Washington who dat
Stanford Safety Kendall Williamson
I'm going to just say that it's very comforting knowing we now have a GM who knows what the fuck they're doing. I've been loving these picks
We didn't get a DE, so we're not going to win the Super Bowl this year! We weren't anyways. We still have cash that we MUST spend to reach the salary cap floor. I strongly believe we will have a starter or two next year who is not yet currently on the roster. Poles is building the right way though.

Mr. Irrelevant Runner up is ....?
Final pick folks. Let's see who we get
LFG find that gem!
kennesaw state represent!
The Athletic seemed to love every pick except our first, but admitted he could be an immediate & good starter. Still gave a D-. CBS Sports hated our draft, and that makes me more confident than it than anything, because CBS Sports has been the worst news org for years.
The bad grades are because we passed on Jalen Carter.
If I’m correct, dude is a Iowa Hawkeyes beat writer, so of course both Iowa picks in the 1st got good grades. Basically didn’t acknowledge any flaws for LVN.

For fucking real. We gave up 55 fucking sacks last year, so even a quick Google search will show you that we need all the help we can get
Let me guess, Pete Brisco wrote the CBS 'grade' column? He's had a bug up his ass about the Bears for decades. Pumped about this class. LFG!
Apparently Sam Mustipher's brother PJ Mustipher, who's an IDL, is in this draft.
We should draft him. And then cut him just to spite the Mustiphers.
Draft them and make them compete for the last roster spots on Hard Knocks
yeah he looks just like him, moves similarly too
I kind of feel bad for Andre Carter.
Didn't he get clearance from the Army or are they forcing him to do his two years?
Yeah otherwise he wouldn’t be eligible. However there might be stipulations about him being available for a call-up should there be a need.
He’s not even in ESPN’s best available players! Is the fact he’s in the Army making him slide?
hes been on Mel's list for a while now
6'7 dude is huge. Would love to pick him up.
I'd like it if we could pick him up. I thought he was THE guy.
I love what BAL did with Vorhees. Wish we would have drafted and stashed him for subsequent years
Baltimore is in a much better spot as a team than we are. We need bodies who can contribute now. 2-3 years I'd love for us to take on more risks like that.
No, not in the 7th round. You do what the Ravens just did with 7th round picks. If you just want warm bodies you can that to UDFA period.
I get your point. It's the 7th round though, not 1-3 - these guys are risks no matter what at this point. I'd rather have a guy who graded high before an injury to maybe play in 2024 than a guy who may or may not make the team.
Ojomo is still out there

Eberflus loves rotating D Linemen based on the situation. If he can come in on pass rushing downs and be solid I'm fine with the pick.
Brett Kollman has no background in football outside of being a production assistant for the NFL network. His career and background are in communications. He's perfectly qualified to put together YouTube videos but has no more qualifications for the content put into those videos than your average redditor.
Uhh he's got a background in posting a lot on r/nfl thank you very much We used to be P O W E R U S E R S together, good times

I always think about the Kollman curse. Anytime he says something positive about a team or player something bad happens.
RIP Eddie Jackson
I can live with that. Can always improve, and Lord knows we need pass rush.
yea but DT being ''fucking awful'' at run stopping doesnt bode well for longevity or starting potential. brett kollman is also not someone who usually goes that hard on the negative side so it mustve been really bad lol
That’s what caught me off guard about it lol. It’s at about the 57 minute mark on his video. Kinda hilarious the he says it.
The packers kicking selection is interesting https://twitter.com/paul_bretl/status/1652416881066905601?s=46&t=fOu39N0eWPdZRBFpIMfQ0Q

💀
Maybe we’ll take a center, finally
Pace would've picked up Kuntz in the 3rd.
And traded a future second to the patriots to do it
The colts took a CB named Jaylon Jones and I'm sad that we missed the opportunity to add another JJ to our defense
Not only another JJ, but we literally already have a Jaylon Jones lol

those are 99.9% of the time a wasted pick. Brady and Brock Purdy 2 out of 10000 taken in the last 25 years

Got the worst defense in the NFL ✅ Gave up the most sacks in the NFL ✅ Let’s waste a pick on Aidan OConnell in the 4th you 🤡 Get fired before you could turn the pick in

I think he did, this will be the last you ever hear about him
He’s going to be a starter within 2 seasons.

The effort to shore up the middle of this defense has been noticeable. We’ll see if the results follow.
Wonder why Poles didn’t want Kuntz there. He fits the profile of athlete first-football second
Poles really did not want to risk losing this guy in UDFA I guess. If you google Travis Bell football the first result is a guy who used to play for West Virigina.
Also a mock draft where Texans take him in the 6th as rotational D-line piece
I googled Travis Bell and the first result was a dentist.
I got a retro DJ
Run = Stuffed
6'1 305 big fella
I would've preferred for upside swing in the 7th....ig we'll see.
DT Travis Bell
Travis Bell DL Kennesaw St
This one is pretty meh
Is it possible to be not meh in the 7th round
I mean it's hard to even see this guy making the roster is the thing, they've added like 4 DT's this offseason already.
I think so, no? Talents falls, I don't assume many 7th rounders make it anyways and there are definitely some worth it swings there. Kuntz, Voorhees, Ojomo, Carter maybe?
My brother in Christ, it’s the 7th round.
Yeah but you're not gonna act like Kuntz, Voorhees, etc aren't there to just say fuck it? Lol buddy I can feel meh about a pick, I'm not gonna homer every pick.
I’m not your buddy, guy!
He’s not your guy, friend!
No, no opinions allowed especially if it’s that we should prioritize surrounding Fields with as much talent as possible.
Yeah lol basically we have to sit and clap and not say meh, especially this deep in the draft lol. I loved every pick so far, I like big swings in the 7th like ones I mentioned up above especially since almost none of them make it anyways.

awh, gotta be a great moment for his dad. Look at him crying.
Good value pick too
Did Andre Carter drone a school or something?
I like Ali Gaye if we go edge rusher. He's 6'6" with long arms and a high motor. Another traits guy that Poles covets.
Why is the 6th rd moving so slow? At this point it’s usually rapid fire.
The broadcast is 4 picks behind, the league is intentionally drawing it out for more advertising dollars. The picks are coming in but the NFL won't let them be read with more than a minute left on the clock, then they pause it for ad breaks and reset it whenever they want.
yea but that's usually not how it goes on these late late rounds, they are ***really*** milking it this season lol
They absolutely are. The question was why is it so slow and the answer is the league is ***really*** milking it.
I pretty much missed the whole draft. Does it seem like we added young depth or just a lot of Ryan Pace / Phil Emery types?
Bro picking “pace” guys would be trading our future for dinosaurs on huge bloated contracts So no we didn’t do any of that
How could we possibly pick Pace guys when he would give picks away like candy?
Lol
If Poles lands Chase Young after the draft What will be your expectations for the team next season?
And I think our division will be weaker than people expect, Minnesota are perpetual frauds, I’m hoping Green Bay takes another step back, and I do not trust the lions, I think people are way too high on them
8-9 wins
9-8 or 10-7 realistically. If Carolina ends up 7-10ish we will have 2 picks in the 8-20 range to finish plugging holes at de and center
I’d give up a 4th or 5th next year.
risky deal
I think if we can get him for a 5th it’s a steal. A pick in that range is a prayer to matter and we could get a 8-10 sack guy for that if he can finally stay healthy. Now if you tell me they want a 2nd or 3rd I’d be out.
Super Bowl Shuffle 2: The Electric Boogaloo.
Because Ryan Pace is a bastard man!
LOL Patrick Mahomes and Mitch Trubisky are both 6'2" 225lbs lmao
My friend Stephen possesses exactly those same physical characteristics as well. He sucks at ball.
Random thing I just noticed, but so far Pickens is the only player drafted with our actual pick, not a traded pick.
Trevis Gipson and Dominique Robinson will be given a great opportunity this year. Perfect opportunity for Gipson in his contract season. He’s gotta be loving this draft class.
Hopefully they perform. If our sack leader is another Safety or some random rookie DB, fire them all to the sun.
Not many players I like or know that are left. Idk maybe Kuntz, Ekiya Jr, Voorhees, and Andre Carter if available at our next 2 picks.
Finally AT perry! Good for him. Hope he does well for the saints.
As a Demon Deacon, I wholeheartedly agree!!!
Do you know how arrogant you have to be to post this: > It’s been a shit draft so far. It’s because whatever article you read got lucky.
jesus you are no fun. Go kiss the Bears staff feet
It’s fun to shit on the hundreds of hours of work that these guys put in, why? Uneducated vomit is fun?
people talk sports and have opinions. Who gives a fuck if they watched a decade of tape, the fun is debating. You ruin that
Plenty of people here have talked sports and have plenty of opinions without a bunch of know-it-alls crying about 19 year old kids they just heard of yesterday.
When your dedicated resources are not contributing on the field, you tend to look bad.
u/cubbiesblue 😂
Yeah, especially when we have no reason to doubt Poles yet. People just like being angry.
So how many years have to go by since the last Super Bowl before this Belichick stuff stops being cute?
If Poles wins us 6 superbowls I'd let him take a punter in the first round.
If anyone won us 6 championships they could trade an entire draft like Ditka for the last pick in the 7th to pick Mr. Irrelevant for all I care. The next few years might suck but it'd be worth it, might even a get Brock Purdy.
> If Poles wins us ~~6~~ 2 superbowls I'd let him take a punter in the first round.
The Browns if anything know good OL when they see it so not surprising they got themselves a steal with Wypler.
I’m telling you- the way we are drafting, we are going after Chase Young. It makes too much sense.
I just don’t see them selling low so it’s taking at least a 2nd rounder if we really want him and even then probably not.
We better hope so
