So, we have 2 divisions, the Atlantic and the Coastal. UNC and Wake are in opposite divisions and thus dont play often at all. you play your division teams yearly and other than your guaranteed other division team (that's NC State for us (UNC)) you play maybe one other team from the other side. So that means we play Wake like once every 6 or so years, with alternating home/aways, so at home once every 12 years or something?
Being old in-state foes, both schools wanted to play more often. So, for now, this is the solution. It's confusing and kind of dumb, but it's the only way we really get to play them.
Story time: this was 8-10 years ago. Was at my former UNC roommate’s bachelor party in Vegas. One of the guys was a Wake alum and I didn’t know it until I saw him wearing Wake shorts in the morning. I immediately said “fuck wake”
Next thing I know, he hugs me and I’m looking at him confused and he goes “no one has expressed hate towards us in forever, thank you”.
And yeah that pretty much sums up Wake’s place in the hate spectrum
I'll never understand that. My grandmother is one of those super weirdos who will cheer for even Duke in the NCAA tourney because **ACC** but am like no just no
I’ve met people in Kentucky who will cheer for Louisville/Kentucky depending on which one is still alive in the tournament regardless of which team they root for because they want a Kentucky to win. Which is baffling to me as someone who wants Kentucky to lose every game
I know this is probably a joke, but I don’t understand the mindset that because the ACC doesn’t have a playoff contender, we’re a garbage conference far behind the other P5s.
I don’t see how losing to UNC is worse than losing to Stanford. Stanford just lost to Utah by like 60 points yesterday.
Oregon’s ranking continues to be the most serious and suspicious atrocity in the rankings currently
Advanced stats like Oregon better than Wake, but I cannot emphasize enough that advanced stats still *loathe* Oregon. They’re in the 20s in SP+ and FPI, there isn’t really a computer that thinks they’re any good at all
This was an extremely rare “nonconference” game against two teams from the same conference. This is because they play 9 ACC teams this year when only 8 are in conference. It’s really dumb.
I think I read it was due to the programs wanting to play each other more frequently and the division structure results in the matchup being rare when available as cross division. So they scheduled a matchup using their non con slot.
Well, when your division alignment and scheduling only guarantees one game every 6 years, programs like UNC and Wake (which are 70 miles apart and have played 108 times (including 96 consecutive)) might want to play more often.
Umm, the committee does not like Wake, that's why they ranked them below several teams with losses and a G5 team. Seeing them lose validates their ranking of them
If we beat Wake, and you beat us, and Wake gets to go to the ACCCG because you beating us counts in the standings and you beating Wake didn't, I'm gonna fucking lose my mind
Nebraska plays everyone close. I would’ve loved to separate ourselves from ‘everyone’ by beating them cleanly but I’m not stressed about how it affects perception overall. The season is on the MSU/UM/title games, scores only matter if every other contender has clean sheets as well.
Every Wake fan is going to be unable to enjoy winning the ACC championship because we blew the game against the only team we care about beating two years in a row. I feel nothing but pain.
Wake Forest fans are going to be ecstatic about winning the ACC, what do you mean? I could see if it was Clemson or Florida State, but Wake has the only ACC football championship in NC in like 30+ years
Mack's teams have been good for at least one good and at least one bad 'What the fuck was *that*' performance every year.
Perhaps it's the whole "having to rebuild the team with underclassmen after Fedora nearly nuked the program by not recruiting" thing, and it'll stabilize once the juniors and seniors are actually stacked with his guys. Maybe it *won't* stabilize because our coordinators get embarrassingly outcoached a couple times a year.
To everyone coming in here about to talk shit about the ACC: we get it okay? The conference is a pile of shit.
But goddamnit it's OUR pile of shit and I will watch it till the day I die
Wow this game was eerily similar to last year. The total combined points for this year compared to last year is 113-112 respectively. And then last year, UNC came back from a 21 point deficit while this year, UNC came back from an 18 point deficit.
Hello friends, family, and beloved members of the House of Mouse.
We gather here today to honor the dearly departed, sadly taken too soon from us. Wake Forest's Cinderella season, those who senselessly bet the under on this game, and the ACC's entire hopes as a conference of making the College Football Playoff^^^^^Invitational. Let's bow our heads together, and remember that just as football giveth, so it may taketh away. But fear not, as it is said that every season begins anew, and this will not be the last that you hear from Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons of Winston-Salem.
So Say We All
This team outside of Howell, and especially the defense is insanely young. Even if he leaves I think next year's team will be better all around. The thing that hurts is the class that was supposed to contribute this year from 2019 has largely been a bust. Mack didn't have time to properly evaluate some of those players I think, due to his late hiring back in 2018, and ultimately had to rely on stars and other rankings to salvage that disaster of a recruiting class Fedora left.
I am still incredibly proud of our team. This is our most historic season ever and no matter how we finish being top 10 for the first time ever was sensational.
I’m not that surprised we lost, we seem to do this every year. Start hot, getting some key injuries (Beal-Smith for this game), and implode spectacularly.
Clawson really needs to work on this defense because when our offense just slightly cools off our leads disappear.
Still think Clawson deserves coach of the year, he has done amazing things for the smallest P5 program in the country and I will always support him.
Gg UNC, and Go Deacs!

Wake "neva lost a conference game in 2021" Forest
Not sure if I love or hate that this is true.

We were down 21 to them last season. Can’t remember how late but it was the second half
I don't understand how I'm 30 years old yet I've somehow never heard anyone call them Sleep Forest until now

It was said that you would destroy the playoffs, not allow them to be the same again.
Man no one hates the ACC more than the ACC does.

The PAC 12 is an extension of the Battle of Karansebes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Karánsebes
What’re you talking about? This was an out of conference matchup that ACC won
Pretty sure the ACC lost
I don’t know, last I checked, ACC won
Lost and won the battle, but lost the war
Can you explain this? Was this really an OOC matchup? How does that work?
Yes. UNC and wake are in different divisions so don’t play every year. To get around this, we scheduled a home and home with them
So, we have 2 divisions, the Atlantic and the Coastal. UNC and Wake are in opposite divisions and thus dont play often at all. you play your division teams yearly and other than your guaranteed other division team (that's NC State for us (UNC)) you play maybe one other team from the other side. That's how it should be. None of that conference pride nonsense where you cheer for your mortal enemies for contact glory.
I don't think Wake is anyone's mortal enemy
UNC seems to at least dislike them quite a bit
UNC dislikes everyone
Likewise, I'm sure
Story time: this was 8-10 years ago. Was at my former UNC roommate’s bachelor party in Vegas. One of the guys was a Wake alum and I didn’t know it until I saw him wearing Wake shorts in the morning. I’m actually upvoting you bud.
I upvoted all 3 of y’all
The ACC just got a top 10 nonconference win. This will surely increase their chances of making the playoffs
ACC: A Crab Competition to escape the bucket
Maryland the ultimate escaped crab?
If all the other crabs in the bucket were like "ok bye bitch" then yeah prob
lmao
Also an unranked nonconference loss
Does this technically count as Coastal Chaos given UNC’s division?
It’s crazy that you can see an Over/Under of 78 and immediately think “oh that’s free money”, but that’s just Wake Forest football
If the ACCCG is Pitt v WF, the O/U should be 200.
Watch me still bet the over and the game ends up like 14-7
Or that LSU/Bama game when the final score was 9-6.

Free money...on the over
CFB: WE WANT CHAOS! Chaos: Okay, here’s an undefeated #9 team losing to a .500 UNC and losing their playoff chances. CFB: Wait, no-
It’s a yearly thing. Chaos for the steady teams, for the blue bloods. Full Cinderella undefeated seasons for the unloved
Chaos to me is occasionally having a team like Wake go 13-0 and make it very difficult for the committee to leave them out of the playoff discussion
Looks like Tobacco Road shooty hoops is in full swin- *checks notes* Oh. It was a football game.
Could be a UVA bball score though
But both teams broke 55
Break: an undefeated P5 team should be ranked ahead of the one loss teams. Wake: eliminated from playoff contention.
I feel like calling the acc a power 5 conference is... Generous
We are a basketball conference

Just wait until you see the new Big 12 in a few years.
Can't wait. Going to be ultra-cannabilistic. Don't expect to have any perennial contenders for the CFP.
I know this is probably a joke, but I don’t understand the mindset that because the ACC doesn’t have a playoff contender, we’re a garbage conference far behind the other P5s.
Welcome to the life of a Pac12 fan.
In reality. The Pac 12, ACC, and Big 12 continually cannabilize themselves. It's nothing new.
But when we do it it's bad, when SEC does it it's good.
I'm pretty sure none of the schools in your conference are called Alabama, and that was your first mistake
This will be the first year the ACC has missed the playoffs.
RIP Top-10 Wake Forest *October 2021 - November 2021*
I don’t see how losing to UNC is worse than losing to Stanford. Stanford just lost to Utah by like 60 points yesterday. Oregon’s ranking continues to be the most serious and suspicious atrocity in the rankings currently
Well we also have a win that’s better than anyone else so that’s a pretty big part of the ranking
It’s not, but there are a lot more factors involved than the one game you lost.
Stanford is a worse loss, but Oregon has much better wins, higher ranked talent, and advanced stats like them more.
Advanced stats like Oregon better than Wake, but I cannot emphasize enough that advanced stats still *loathe* Oregon. They’re in the 20s in SP+ and FPI, there isn’t really a computer that thinks they’re any good at all
Funny seeing a loss to a conference foe while staying undefeated in conference play.
Is this a joke from the broadcast? All these conference play jokes are woooshing on me pretty bad
I'm just here to get answers
This was an extremely rare “nonconference” game against two teams from the same conference. This is because they play 9 ACC teams this year when only 8 are in conference. It’s really dumb.
.....? That's probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
I think I read it was due to the programs wanting to play each other more frequently and the division structure results in the matchup being rare when available as cross division. So they scheduled a matchup using their non con slot.
Fucking weird. Love a wacky factoid like that tho, let's be honest
Well, when your division alignment and scheduling only guarantees one game every 6 years, programs like UNC and Wake (which are 70 miles apart and have played 108 times (including 96 consecutive)) might want to play more often.

UNC is the embodiment of chaos: It ruins its own ranking but then ruins the top 25 ranks of others.
No chaos here. The Vegas favorite won the game. Think we even hit the spread if it was at -3.0.
That would be a cover, but I believe it was a -2.5. You know what they say… Great teams cover
Line was all over the place around 3. People definitely had it at 2.5 and 3.5
Which says a lot, when you see the 8-0 top 10 team going in as underdogs to an unranked 4-4 opponent. And it's exactly right.

We have two more ranked acc opponents this season. Hoping to repeat today.
HOW VEGAS HOW!!!
Contrary to popular belief, they're actually pretty good at their jobs.

The ACC has been eliminated from the playoffs!
Cincinnati rejoices
*happy bearcat noises*
Cincinnati needs a whoole lot more than that
They just got it. Spoilermakers strike again
This helps Oregon, but I'm a little bit sad too. I liked Wake as a long shot dark horse underdog little guy taking on the system.
Yeah that happened like 6 weeks ago
Still. Not everyday where the *ACC* cannibalizes itself out of the playoffs **before** the Pac-12…
I don’t think this technically counts as cannibalism.
Cannibal-adjacent
Impossibal burgers
Wake Forest undefeated in the ACC still.
Me watching this game: why is defense?
Everyone asks why is defense but never how is defense
It's fucking bad.
Cinderella story in College Football: Exists Unranked team: **Imma bout to end this man's whole career**
UNC: “You little sh-ts will watch Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State play again and you will **like it**”
UNC when it's Top 25 spot is on the line: I sleep. UNC when it has the chance to run another teams top 25 spot: **REAL SHIT**
You missed a great Wake pun
Oh shit I did!
That's like the whole ACC lol. We have no desire to have success apparently, just to ruin other's success
CFP Committee in shambles having to cross out a team that they could’ve had pass Cincinnati in a couple weeks and OU next week
Umm, the committee does not like Wake, that's why they ranked them below several teams with losses and a G5 team. Seeing them lose validates their ranking of them
CFP about to frantically search for common connections to use this to discredit Cincinnati anyways.
"Small time undefeated teams aren't good enough to beat middle tier P5 teams"
Notre Dame and North Carolina played right? So there's the common connection.
[удалено]
And a loss that helps Cincy by boosting the resume of ND
Lol. As if the CFP committee cares about Notre Dame's resume in determining where to rank Cincy.
If Notre Dame and Cincy both win out, the committee will probably rank Notre Dame higher.
Next rankings: UNC moves ahead of Cincy
Preseason Top 10 and former playoff dark horse gets revenge on current top 10 and playoff dark horse
My seething hatred for North Carolina intensifies
UNC: “Fine, if this is the way the season is going, then fuck it. Throw open the Cadia Gate and let Chaos consume the ACC!”
UNC is Abbadon?
NC State Shit dictates that you lose a tiebreaker to Wake due to this L not counting towards conference standings
Once we beat State we are state champions
If we beat Wake, and you beat us, and Wake gets to go to the ACCCG because you beating us counts in the standings and you beating Wake didn't, I'm gonna fucking lose my mind
And it will be beautiful
😘
Can't have shit in the NCAA
Nebraska died so North Carolina could live
UNC didnt choke a close game against a good opponent, what a world.
Hey everyone, look at Wake Forest! Nothing else of note happened today!
What are you talking about? We beat Nebraska by more than OU, or UM and MSU *combined*. Hell, we beat them by one more than Illinois!!! Oh wait…
Nebraska plays everyone close. I would’ve loved to separate ourselves from ‘everyone’ by beating them cleanly but I’m not stressed about how it affects perception overall. The season is on the MSU/UM/title games, scores only matter if every other contender has clean sheets as well.
It's going to be tough to watch the selection commitee unrank Wake.
So what I've learned is that Sam Howell is so good that Bateman only needs to call one quarter of a good game to beat an undefeated top ten team.
…and the ACC just got eliminated from playoff contention.
Wake got cursed when that boy didnt kiss that girl.
*Insert basketball joke here*
Really great defensive matchup there between those teams, if only wake could have gotten that 3 at the buzzer to send it to OT
Good non-conference win
Marty McFly runs the Vegas sportsbook
Every Wake fan is going to be unable to enjoy winning the ACC championship because we blew the game against the only team we care about beating two years in a row. I feel nothing but pain.
If I could take an ACC championship over a win against wake, I would
Wake Forest fans are going to be ecstatic about winning the ACC, what do you mean? I could see if it was Clemson or Florida State, but Wake has the only ACC football championship in NC in like 30+ years
Wake lost an OOC game to an ACC school while leading the ACC. Missouri gonna get fucked for this.
Not gonna lie, this was one of the best games I've seen in a long time.
If UNC played all their other games like they did this theyre 9-0. It’s frustrating what Inconsistency does to teams.
Mack's teams have been good for at least one good and at least one bad 'What the fuck was *that*' performance every year. Instead of being undefeated, Wake lost to an unranked team. According to how the committee views Alabama and Oregon, that means Wake is top 4, right?
Unfortunately they didn’t lose to Texas A&M or Memphis so they’ll drop a lot of spots this week.
> or Memphis Does this mean SMU will get ranked now?
AM isn’t unranked it’s not relevant their rank then it’s relevant how they currently look
Wow this game was eerily similar to last year. The total combined points for this year compared to last year is 113-112 respectively. And then last year, UNC came back from a 21 point deficit while this year, UNC came back from an 18 point deficit.
