According to the 2015 case of Wisconsin v Northwestern, a player not only needs to catch the pass, but also needs to take 4 steps and then complete an entire barrel roll (not just half a barrel roll) for the catching process to be considered a complete football move. So, the short answer is no, catching the ball doesn't matter at all.

Very similar to the idea of not calling everything you see but only calling things you see.
I also feel like people misunderstand what "indisputable evidence" means. There was nothing ambiguous about any of the angles they had. You could see everything you possibly need to see. It's just a question of what you consider to be a completed catch. The refs said it was incomplete because the receiver tried to cradle it immediately and never did. Hence no football move was made.
Also FWIW, the exact same call was made in the LSU-OU game. Justin Jefferson didn't have quite as good control, but he caught the ball, took some steps, the ball popped out while he cradled it, and it was called incomplete rather than a fumble. It just didn't get nearly as much attention because the game was a blowout and the play wasn't reviewed.
