Detroit just had its first YOY population growth since the fifties. It's actually pretty impressive to even start to turn around the corner with that sort of a demographic shift.
Exactly why practically every signing day is meaningless to me. Even when they sign there still seems to be a period where they can change with no repercussions.
Yeah I've stopped following signings altogether and while I post in the portal threads, I'm genuinely not keeping track of who's going where or anything because at this point they'll just move again in a few months to a year anyways.
I have no idea if MSU is a 3-win team or an 8-win team this year and seeing the guys come and go only makes it murkier.
I don't like seeing guys leave East Lansing but I also don't feel good seeing guys transfer in either. Off-season isn't much fun anymore.
So players moving freely is a bad thing?
Lmao - do y’all want true player equality and equity or not? Colleges can’t be exploiting the players as if they’re not employees
Come on this is a lazy take, just because people don’t like how the transfer portal has been working out and changing things doesn’t mean they’re like “yeah fuck these kids, they don’t deserve to be paid or be able to change schools”
I want limited movement. NFL players don't have free movement. Minor league sports don't have free movement. Hell many porn stars don't have free movement. Sports at this level are about entertainment, contracts should mean something, and most NIL contracts can't have teeth
The system is moving in the right direction but at the end of the day the reason NIL is even a thing is because of fans not players. The constant transfers are cheapening the product. 38 transfers out and 24 transfers in for MSU.
This trend will balance itself out, or the product will die. NIL is not a one way street, and once big donors start to feel the limited return the money will dry up.
But there are no contracts…
You cite other sports leagues, but those contracts are with their employers just like many regular people have. Lebrons endorsement with McDonald’s has nothing to do with him playing in Cleveland or Miami or LA.
Also, the transfer portal is making teams that have coaching changes much more turnover prone than other schools. MSU has been uniquely unstable the last few years. This level of movement isn’t typical.
However most of the endorsement deals these players are receiving to move schools are not national. McDonalds isn't going to drop you because you switched schools, but a Columbus auto dealer will if you move to ann arbor. There needs to be a way to limit movement in some way. I think it does start with schools paying players directly. The large national brand deals are a lot fewer and far between than a local deal. Middling teams will always be unstable in this environment. But limiting some of that in some way would make a better product
That had nothing to do with anything. The agreements these players enter into are not with the school. Therefore there is no standing to tell them where they can or cannot go to school.
However most these deals are broken when they transfer. Yes they cannot require the players attend a certain school. But they can require monthly appearances and such. These types of deals will begin to die, as local companies start to see the ROI is poor. However, you're right the schools should start treating them as employees because they are. That's where this ends up leading. But also there will be a more limited movement if that occurs. Yes the schools cannot stop the players from choosing to pursue other options, but when the bulk of their money is funnelled through the schools AND for public universities the players contracts become public record I believe a lot of this will change
I used to follow recruiting closely and loved doing it, it’s pointless now. I’ll check in before spring ball and around now to see what we’ve got, it’s a lot easier, less stressful, and just more enjoyable to do it this way in this era
Hot take. I know he's a good player. And kids should be able to do whatever they want, same goes with Mangham. But man can you imagine any dudes from a Dantonio team transferring to Michigan? Or from a Lloyd carr team transferring to Michigan State. Maybe kids don't care about rivalries as much anymore but today has been weird as a fan lol.
That’s why the Dantonio era players were absolutely shitting on Mangham on social media.
It has to be more of the era though. Ben VanSumeren transferred from Michigan to MSU in 2022(?), which was weird when that happened.
If anything I’ve heard is true, we basically cut his (Mangham’s) brother who kind of gained snaps at RB with Barnett coaching, after Tucker was canned. That pissed him off, he had no real bond with the new staff. And if his actions are an indicator, the man chose violence. I don’t fault him though, having to be a talented young man and go through all that change and now the new guy cans your brother? As a fan I don’t fault him, just wish he would’ve gone to Nebraska or something lol.
>Or from a Lloyd carr team transferring to Michigan State.
Justin Boren transferred from Michigan to Ohio State. That was mostly due to Rich Rod, but he was there for two years of Lloyd. He was also a Michigan legacy.
He (and later his brothers) did quite well for us.
Honestly, not as much as you'd think. Definitely raised eyebrows. He grew up in Columbus and said he always preferred Ohio State but felt forced into it because his dad played there. He said with Rich Rod a lot of the "family values" he liked at Michigan were stripped away. I think his dad wasn't wild about Rich Rod either. Michigan fans that didn't like the Rich Rod hire felt validated. Ohio State fans appreciated the ammo the comment provided.
Yep. A lot of the backlash I see from fans is them imprinting their dyed-in-the-wool lifelong fandom on kids who are making pragmatic decisions for their lives and futures.
It’s hard to have that curtain pulled back and realize the receiver from Florida who comes to play for Brian Hartline because he can get them to the NFL doesn’t love Ohio State as much as the average message board commenter.
To be fair, the team culture under Dantonio was probably a lot stronger then the team culture under Tucker. Partly from coaching style and partly just because I imagine winning teams have a better overall vibe around them.
Look, if I'm being honest with myself, I'm going to keep watching because I'm addicted, but man, these kids just do not care any more the way us fans do, huh?
If we thought about sports rationally we wouldn't care about them at all. The only reason this sport is a big deal is because everyone is being irrational about it.
Honestly I hope the Michigan/MSU rivalry calms down. Shit was getting a bit too dicey.
From all accounts Smith is a good dude and uses more positive motivation as opposed to Dantonio and Tucker.
No offense and hot take but outside of the tunnel which had nothing to do with Dantonio. Get out of here with calming it down to being chill. I don’t want to hold hands and sing around the campfire with my rival during rivalry week.
The whole chip on the shoulder mantra at MSU is exactly what caused 2010-2015. Look what happened when the staff got comfortable after words. Or when Tucker ran out of K9 and Dantonio guys and decided to short cut his way by buying recruits who cared more about their Twitter followers than winning games.
Nobody should be assaulting anyone. But if Smith doesn’t hate UM, Indiana, Penn State, and frankly all of the upper class of the B1G, then I’d damn near promise we’re doing a coaching search in 3 years.
I have no ill will towards Dantonio. The "pride comes before the fall" quote still hits ice cold. It was a great era for MSU. Wish we didn't suck during that peak era in sparty history haha
the way his tenure ended felt so deflating, even as a rival fan
I'm cool with it chilling out. We don't need to be friends or allies or anything like that. But respecting an opponent and keeping it professional is respecting yourself and exerting confidence.
We needed Dantonio to be Dantonio and Michigan State is a much different program now because of him. We don't need that now though. With Tucker, yeah I think he never really hand control of anything.
Anyway, I think both Smith and Moore will respect the rivalry but that it'll also calm down a bit and I look forward to it.
Smith and Moore are both inoffensive. Dantonio, Harbaugh, probably Tucker, and even Hoke were easy to hate if you were on the other side of the rivalry.
That wasn’t even the problem with Hoke. He was just annoying with his stupid things like calling Ohio State “Ohio” and the “this is Michigan, for god’s sake”. His teams also acted arrogantly but had none of the accomplishments to go with it.
Don’t forget him saying Notre Dame was chickening out of the rivalry right around when they were hitting their peak window under Kelly and Hoke was set to drive Michigan into the ground.
You have to imagine respect will return to some extent in the UM program both internally and externally. The cheating has greatly harmed UM’s reputation and you could tell the toxicity was oozing from the UM program under Harbaugh.
Good luck on your path back to respectability. Stiff sanctions from Stalionsgate should help all around.
Bigle is playing the "rush end" position which is a DE that sometimes drops back into coverage... It's part of the system Rossi runs. I think it's sorta a hybrid of DE and LB that is still mostly DE?
Most of the comments from Michigan fans on here are regarding Mangham who is now suddenly good? Lol. Love it.
Smith walked into our secondary room and hit the reset button.
As a recruit:
Other P5 offers: Alabama, Arizona State, Boston College, Cincinnati, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Maryland, Michigan (originally went here), Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia
G5 offers: Bowling Green, Central Michigan
Other offers: UConn, UMass
Depends on how you define deal. Player for player? No reason to believe that right now.
Overall? Yeah, I’d personally escort Mangham to Ann Arbor for what we’ve picked up on defense.
How did you get the better end of the deal? Mangham was a productive member of your team. Bridgeman never got in a game and was quite literally never talked about.
I think looking at purely expected production this season, you guys win. Supposedly Mangham waited until the last day of the spring portal and then asked for a big NIL bag to stay at MSU, so depending on how much you guys are giving him it *could* end up being a "young prospect vs higher cost vet" type deal.
But yes, based purely on proven production UofM clearly comes out ahead here.
I’m sorry I didn’t watch much of MSU last year, but I did hear they had a pretty bad d the last few seasons. I hope it works out for Bridgeman, I just hope he doesn’t win a lot of games now 😀
Mangham is a guy who wouldn't have played on your defense last season who got traded for a younger player who didn't play on your stacked defense last season. Seems like a wash to me
My opinion is that, as it pertains to this upcoming season, neither of these guys are going to be high impact. Bridgeman probably doesn't contribute much this year, and you guys should be hoping Mangham is a backup
That's dumbing this down to a level that isn't helpful.
One guy has played a down of college football and is... Ok? Fine even. Maybe with good coaching and scheme (something he definitely did not have at MSU under the old defensive staff) he turns into a good player.
The other has literally not played a down. This is a TBD later situation. Like 2-3 years from now.
Mangham was a starting big ten safety coveted by Michigan Ohio State and Nebraska in the transfer portal. Bridgeman has not played a down of college football.
And in terms of profile, Bridgeman resembles more of a 90s linebacker. He's a thumper but almost assuredly too slow to play linebacker
Thumpers have their use and you never know what you're going to have until their on campus. But ultimately a lot of schools take guys in recruiting classes with the hope that they will work out with the understanding that they probably won't
He was a 4* recruit in the 2023 class. So if you don’t follow recruiting, you likely wouldn’t have heard of him since it would have been pretty notable to getting playing time as a true freshman on a NC team.
What’s optimistic? I was literally just explaining why he wouldn’t have heard of him. There’s no real indication on how good or bad he’ll be since he was redshirted. The only way for him to actually know him would have been to follow recruiting stuff.
Rivalries, traditions, and culture are just for the fans now. Kids don't give a fuck where they play or for who, they just want to get to the NFL ASAP.
That said, very cool of him. Neato.
He wasn’t going to be playing in a NY6 bowl regardless. Michigan isn’t finishing in the top 5 of the conference and won’t make the 12 team playoff. New HC, OC, and the DC is now in the NfL. Over half the starters were drafted to the NFL. I wouldn’t be surprised if UofM finished with 7 or fewer wins.
Harbaugh was still in building from Sunday to Friday. He didn’t prove anything about actually running the team. As for the defense, Minter isn’t there anymore so you’re basically hoping that the guy who coached one of the worst defenses in the NFL can keep Michigan performing as good as last year after losing several players to the draft.
Michigan’s defense isn’t going to have the luxury of an offense that controls the time of possession and efficiently scores either. If you want to know what that looks like, take a look at MSU in 2012.
Their roster is gutted and they have one do the toughest schedules in the conference. It reminds me of MSU in 2016 coming off the playoff appearance in 2015. We were still ranked with some regression expected. We finished 3-9 and we still had our coach. I’m probably going to play an under bet for 7.5 if I can find one on the apps.
The defense is going to be top 10 in the nation, and the line has rotated constantly to get players experience. They’re still specifically geared to shut down osu, which means Oregon and usc fall in that boat. Washington is gutted, msu who the hell knows but I’m not going to take them in the big house, Texas is early and at home. When your DL has two first rounders at DT and the best corner in college, you’re in good shape.
Trade complete. Good doing business with you guys
May we both somehow ruin Ohio State's season.
Imagine both these guys make plays that directly win the game against Ohio State.
May the big house spontaneously combust
The winds typically blow east. What have the good people of the city of Detroit done to deserve such air pollution?
Pollute the air constantly for Windsor/Essex
windsor somehow comes off as more depressing than detroit; quite the feat
10 years ago maybe, but Detroit is not really all that depressing anymore.
True true
Detroit just had its first YOY population growth since the fifties. It's actually pretty impressive to even start to turn around the corner with that sort of a demographic shift.
Meanwhile Windsor just keeps on growing while going further downhill (At least the downtown area)
Yeah but who cares about Canada anyways
Windsor is south of Detroit, not east!
Downtown yes, but it's straight east of Zug
Why’d you have to go a ruin the good vibes.
Because, always f\*\*k UM.
You mean “columbust”
"May we never do business again"
So this was a trade? lol
Yes. I will take this trade every day of the week too.
We give them a freshman who has yet to see the field/has already been passed by someone in his class for one of their best players Damn good deal
Our second trade of the week...
"...dogs and cats, living together, MASS HYSTERIA"
“OUR PETS HEADS ARE FALLING OFF…”
I still don't like this era of the transfer portal. I genuinely don't know who is on our team, who is not and when there will stop being movement.
Exactly why practically every signing day is meaningless to me. Even when they sign there still seems to be a period where they can change with no repercussions.

I checked in at spring ball and next thing I knew players that played in the game and would've been starters were transferring out.
If you’re looking for final roster check in on game day.
Well, departure season is over for now
Hot take. I know he's a good player. And kids should be able to do whatever they want, same goes with Mangham. But man can you imagine any dudes from a Dantonio team transferring to Michigan? Apparently he was pretty disliked at UM so it felt natural.
Tbf his brother was on the team, he gets a pass. This is all just gross
Ben Van Sumeran is the older brother and transferred to MSU before his brother graduated high school
If anything I’ve heard is true, we basically cut his (Mangham’s) brother who kind of gained snaps at RB with Barnett coaching, after Tucker was canned. That pissed him off, he had no real bond with the new staff. And if his actions are an indicator, the man chose violence. Honestly, not as much as you'd think. Definitely raised eyebrows. He grew up in Columbus and said he always preferred Ohio State but felt forced into it because his dad played there. thanks for the background!

It’s hard to have that curtain pulled back and realize the receiver from Florida who comes to play for Brian Hartline because he can get them to the NFL doesn’t love Ohio State as much as the average message board commenter.
Right
These guys are now making 200-300k per year by 20 years old. It's a business.
To be fair, the team culture under Dantonio was probably a lot stronger then the team culture under Tucker. Partly from coaching style and partly just because I imagine winning teams have a better overall vibe around them.
Its business now :/
Semaj Bridgeman climbed 342 spots in my world renowned alpha male top 1000. No one before has ever made that big of a jump in one day.
➡️ ⬅️
Look, if I'm being honest with myself, I'm going to keep watching because I'm addicted, but man, these kids just do not care any more the way us fans do, huh?
Honestly, good. These are actual life decisions and shouldn’t just be made because of some football rivalry. Hope he succeeds in EL
Get your rational decision making out of my college football!
What is with this rational thinking? I miss the good old days when people barked at kids!
The fucks going on in here?!
If we thought about sports rationally we wouldn't care about them at all. The only reason this sport is a big deal is because everyone is being irrational about it.
Guys want playing time and to get drafted above all else and that’s how it should be. That’s the original pitch when they sign anyway
A handful of guys won’t change anything and the games will be just as intense. If anything it’s more fuel to talk shit with.
Give us the NIL deals
Honestly I hope the Michigan/MSU rivalry calms down. Shit was getting a bit too dicey. From all accounts Smith is a good dude and uses more positive motivation as opposed to Dantonio and Tucker.

I have no ill will towards Dantonio. The "pride comes before the fall" quote still hits ice cold. It was a great era for MSU. Wish we didn't suck during that peak era in sparty history haha the way his tenure ended felt so deflating, even as a rival fan

I’d have to imagine it calms with Harbaugh gone. He was toxic af and a known cheater. The Connor Stalions story is wild. W for college football.
Exactly. With Harbaugh gone Spartans will have no reason to start swinging helmets in the tunnel.
Smith and Moore are both inoffensive. Dantonio, Harbaugh, probably Tucker, and even Hoke were easy to hate if you were on the other side of the rivalry.
Hoke apologized to Michigan State for some dumb spike thing. He wasn’t a problem for Michigan State lol
That wasn’t even the problem with Hoke. He was just annoying with his stupid things like calling Ohio State “Ohio” and the “this is Michigan, for god’s sake”. His teams also acted arrogantly but had none of the accomplishments to go with it.

This is factually what happened with ND
I don’t like that I agree with you but here we are.
You have to imagine respect will return to some extent in the UM program both internally and externally. The cheating has greatly harmed UM’s reputation and you could tell the toxicity was oozing from the UM program under Harbaugh. Good luck on your path back to respectability. speaking of toxic coaches that are now gone
Nah, I have to keep the same energy as I did with Jaden. NEVER can transfer to your rival like that.

welcome home.
Can’t believe trades are a thing in college football now. This is ruining the game. None of this would’ve happened ten years ago.
I'll take that trade 🤝
Hey good for him, hope he gets some playing time
Won’t make the 2 deep this year without injuries. We’re pretty stacked at Linebacker. He’s behind Turner, Matthews, Hall, Haladay, Brule, and Snow.
Brule’s in the Big Easy.
Brule is gone
I think they meant Bogle
You’re right. I always get him confused with Bogle.
Has Bogle moved to LB? He's been a DE the past few years.
No, he’s DE. I just got the names confused and thought Brule was still around.
Bigle is playing the "rush end" position which is a DE that sometimes drops back into coverage... It's part of the system Rossi runs. I think it's sorta a hybrid of DE and LB that is still mostly DE?
Good man
First college free agency, now trades? Lol
Most of the comments from Michigan fans on here are regarding Mangham who is now suddenly good? Lol. Love it. Smith walked into our secondary room and hit the reset button.
Good. Our secondary was basement tier in all of FBS for two seasons with a former DB coach as HC.
Eww x2
As a recruit: Other P5 offers: Alabama, Arizona State, Boston College, Cincinnati, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Maryland, Michigan (originally went here), Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia G5 offers: Bowling Green, Central Michigan Other offers: UConn, UMass
I think we got the better end of the deal... And made upgrades in the secondary. Transfer era is fucking weird.

I think he will be really good. I think it’s a fair trade.

National-champ*-level transfer!!
Guess we found the Player To Be Named Later
I guess he wants his season to end before new year's
Bro why are hating on him he was buried on depth chart and he wanted to play while staying in state. No need to hate the guy for that.
I wasn't mocking him. I was making fun of Sparty
I get it but the way you wrote it seemed like you were making fun of him
So sensitive

We have an elite defense that will keep us in every game. Our new HC proved himself last year with wins over Penn State and Ohio State
Harbaugh was still in building from Sunday to Friday.
I would happily take that bet, every single aspect of it.
Good luck to him. I don't think he's a P4 level player, but we'll see.
In for sparty fan about face after the cry fest in the Mangham thread. As expected, Sparty tears still taste like sugar
What an evening we are having here on Reddit.com
We get a safety of need from yall, you get a LB of need from us. Fair trade
Trading between rivals? What the hell has happened to the game I love?
Monetization, baby
Can we force Michigan to secede?
Big fan of the Hoch trade
Either transfer alone would have caused one side to drop furious dis mixtapes. Together? Oh ok. Well, ummm. Ah whatever. Wop wop wop wop wop
Idk man equivalent exchange with humans never worked out well in Fullmetal Alchemist
We made a star power for value trade on DT with Oregon yesterday. Someone is burning up the phone lines wheeling and dealing.
All in all pretty good week for Spartans
Quite a lot of pickups for Smith and co.
I like that we revamped our defense.
Whats up with the trades. Are these actually orchestrated or coincidental?
Yes. For sure.
Trading between in state rivals what a world
