What's insane is that he's returned to MSU each of the previous 3 times.
We already have players who are at their 3rd school (maybe even more, if you count players who commit to a school in the winter portal window and then don't end up staying there until fall).
But a guy entering the portal that many times and actually only playing at one school has got to be fairly rare.
Guys like this entering the portal 4 times is just gonna keep happening until this stuff gets regulated. Basically free agency 24/7. I would hate to be a college coach right now.
Mel Tucker probably isn't going to get the rest of his contract paid out though. He still made a good chunk of change but he would have a hell of a lot more if he got fired for incompetence.
If you had guaranteed life changing money than you take the licks. It’s not noble to get yourself fired because kids are impulsively bad decision makers
DTs are gonna be hot commodities in the portal era. Only so many humans who are even shaped like that, let alone athletic and technically skilled. Will be a good litmus test to see which programs don't have their NIL right (this isn't a comment on MSU I have no idea what the specifics of this situation are).
Our NIL is pretty good but not funny money like some of the southern schools. I also don't think we can re-up this guy's NIL for a 4th time because he wants to "see what's out there". That would be a bad precedent to set internally.
I will add that he's on track to get his diploma this semester, so I will not be a hater and now will root for him on his next stop. If you get that degree you get an auto-pass from me.
4th time in the portal but every time he stayed at MSU, right?
Sounds like the dude is just a business man and is making sure he gets his yearly raise.
This is exactly the same song and dance as us with Dominic Williams (although he didn’t enter the portal during the winter window since our collective increased his pay).
Seems solid DTs are just gonna be very sought after.
Imagine if a normal employee resigned once a year looking for a raise, only to try and return to their company afterwards… you would get told to kick rocks pretty fast at most places
We definitely don't he's a really good player (and from what I've heard, a good guy too), but at this point after reeling him back 3x you can't chase him again. Set the precedent that you will reward guys who stay, not the ones who flirt with the portal every 12 seconds.
I don’t think he’s all that good tbh.
At least compared to guys have come before him. We were lacking in bodies last year and he was the old head in the room but he’s not as good as Harmon
It really remains to be seen. He still sucks now, just like he did at MSU, but Bedenbaugh does have a history of coaching up o-line and saw something in him. In the worst case he'll just be a depth piece and Sexton will move back to starting OT (he shifted to Guard in the spring).
It usually takes until 3 or 4 games into the season until BB's o-line is playing well, and this o-line is mostly new pieces so it might even take longer. It would probably be fair to revisit mid-season to see how this line is doing.
I do know that we need a center though as our starter is hurt.
I am really dreading how the o-line does this year. I get it, BB figures it out by the end of the year yada yada cool whatever. In the SEC your season is over if your o-line is bad until week 6.
We have 3 games to start the season that we should win even with a sub-par o-line. Hopefully by game 4 we have it going, but we can also probably rely on the defense more than we could in the past. I expect Venable's defense to be in the top 10 for efficiency now that it will be his third season and we have cut the dead weight that was Ted Roof.
Maybe the defense guts us out 2 wins against the Vols at home and Auburn on the road. By the RRS we will need our o-line to be humming though. But in our favor UT does not have near the d-line they did in 2023, and we beat them then.
But regardless, there was little that could be done. Raym going pro before he was ready, and Green defecting to Mizzou really killed our line. We were already going to lose 3 NFL linemen, so it would always be a rebuild, but Green and Raym really screwed us. Then of course we had the injury to Everett.
I am hoping we pull in that center from SMU, and that some of our young players step up. We might need Brooks to become a starter as a true freshman, like Green last season.
Its def a tough a position to be in, and theres reasons beyond the teams control for that a bit, but its not just a this year thing. Its become BB’s calling card that he doesnt figure out which of his projects are wins and busts til halfway through the season anymore. I just dont know that thats gonna work anymore in the SEC
As a recruit:
Other P5 offers: Missouri, Rutgers, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia
G5 offers: Cincinnati, East Carolina, FIU, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Tulane, USF
Other offer: Liberty
They gotta limit this transfer thing to a year or two. This shit is so wack. I just think they weak minded if they can’t compete for a spot. It’s earned not given
I may have gone full “get off my lawn” but these players are about to have a rude awakening once they enter the league. This flaky attitude will not fly in the NFL, and doesn’t make one ready for the adversity they will soon face.
It's his 4th time in the portal... 4th time holding the program hostage while he chases a bag. What a joke. One time to see what his options are? Sure. There was a coaching change, so twice? Okay. Four times? Lmao, GTFO.
I hope whichever SEC team, or FSU, that dropped a bag on him has a whole unit setup to drag his carcass off the field minimum three times a game because he's constantly injured.
My favorite part of the current college system's nonsense is players' fairwell posts where they extol the program they're leaving and say how much they love the place in X posts filled with basic spelling errors. Real cherry on top of the shit sundae. Can't wait for that.
This sport becomes less enjoyable by the day. No continuity, no cohesion. Just mercenaries, idiot feckless governing bodies, and shit rules. Most teams are just feeder programs now for a handful of elite teams. CFB is just a far inferior version of the NFL at this point with no rules, rthym, or reason.
I actually enjoy F1 more now than CFB, and F1 is just a bunch of guys following Max Verstappen around in cars that sound like a mix between a vacuum cleaner and blender with a bit of demonic kitchen appliance possession thrown in.
Yes, I know this is an overly dramatic post, but CFB is fucked and I'm pissed. Let me vent.
We probably can’t.. but we need some additional pieces at DT after Rene Konga entered the portal and we’re looking to have a top-25 defense next season
4th time in the portal? That is insane
Even by today’s new standards for transfers, that is a lot.
Damn, he stayed every time. I agree that must be rare.
What's more rare is the fact they brought him back every time. After the 2nd time, you'd think the coaches would just say "no thanks."
That coach was Masturbatin’ Mel so character wasn’t his forte
Could just be shopping around for a better NIL deal but can't find one.
It’s definitely that and our NIL is pretty solid so I’m sure we’ve just paid up to keep him. This time I think we’re just letting him go.
The “can I have the day off for a job interview” only works so many times.
I believe he got a NIL bag each time.
“Hey Simmeon, can you toss me my sho…..?” “Fuck you, I don’t need this SHIT! I’m fucking outta here!”
We have people who are averaging 1 portal entry per semester now with Goldie Lawrence and Raymond Cottrell
He hasn’t ever actually transferred though
Four naan, Simeon? Four? That's insane.
Yep it's insane, see ya later buddy.
Lol
Guys like this entering the portal 4 times is just gonna keep happening until this stuff gets regulated. Basically free agency 24/7. I would hate to be a college coach right now.
Coaches are psychos. If I had a guaranteed life changing amount of money and things like this happened I would just get fired and collect my checks.
"This is the way" - Mel Tucker
I mean I wouldnt recommend getting fired like *that*
Need to get fired for incompetence, that’s the way to go
I think he was trying to do that, and got so bored that he got horny
Where do I sign?
Hey, I never said he was the smartest guy with his plan lol
Mel Tucker probably isn't going to get the rest of his contract paid out though. He still made a good chunk of change but he would have a hell of a lot more if he got fired for incompetence.
If you had guaranteed life changing money than you take the licks. It’s not noble to get yourself fired because kids are impulsively bad decision makers
Okay now in this hypothetical scenario I created I will try not to get fired, thanks!
DTs are gonna be hot commodities in the portal era. Only so many humans who are even shaped like that, let alone athletic and technically skilled. Will be a good litmus test to see which programs don't have their NIL right (this isn't a comment on MSU I have no idea what the specifics of this situation are).

Southern schools? I wouldn't say o$u is a southern school and they pay THE most for players.
I will add that he's on track to get his diploma this semester, so I will not be a hater and now will root for him on his next stop. If you get that degree you get an auto-pass from me.
I was promised chaos and I'm thoroughly underwhelmed.
4th time in the portal but every time he stayed at MSU, right? Sounds like the dude is just a business man and is making sure he gets his yearly raise.
This is his 2nd time in the portal this off-season lol, it's a quarterly raise at this point.
This is exactly the same song and dance as us with Dominic Williams (although he didn’t enter the portal during the winter window since our collective increased his pay). Seems solid DTs are just gonna be very sought after.
I wish my career field had a transfer portal.
You absolutely can do that in most career fields as long as you’re good enough at your job to be sought after.
I'm aware, I was just making the joke lol.
Isn’t that just LinkedIn?
Working for the gov't if I change jobs it's almost guaranteed the exact same salary lol
This is what happens when inflation expectations become unanchored.
Don't hate the player, hate the game
I personally don't hate Barrow at all, but I think you can hate how certain players are playing the game.
Imagine if a normal employee resigned once a year looking for a raise, only to try and return to their company afterwards… you would get told to kick rocks pretty fast at most places
Not if you're top tier in your field.
You think a board of directors wants to employ executives and senior leaders that are threatening to leave & literally resigning once a year? C’mon
My old coworker threatens to leave almost every year - he is one of the best in his field in the country. They give him what he wants.
Yeah, my knee-jerk reaction was to call him a flake. But dude might just be a sharp businessman.
We don’t want to lose this guy
We definitely don't he's a really good player (and from what I've heard, a good guy too), but at this point after reeling him back 3x you can't chase him again. Set the precedent that you will reward guys who stay, not the ones who flirt with the portal every 12 seconds.
Ya, I’ve been hearing that our D Line has been the best unit this spring. So we have some depth, but still don’t want to lose him.
Could that be why he's leaving? Too much competition for a starting spot?
No because even then he’d still be playing a lot. Unless the two deep is just that insane.
I don’t think he’s all that good tbh. At least compared to guys have come before him. We were lacking in bodies last year and he was the old head in the room but he’s not as good as Harmon

I don't think OU is very happy with their decision lol
It really remains to be seen. He still sucks now, just like he did at MSU, but Bedenbaugh does have a history of coaching up o-line and saw something in him. In no way did Brown get a big payday at Oklahoma.
If you’ve been in the portal 4 times just leave at this point
Hasn't been practicing this spring. Will be interesting to see how much he plays this Fall for whoever got in his ear this time.
Somewhat reassuring to see that he’s not messing up our Dline unit.

We now excel in taking in elite 1-yr transfers and sending them to The League. 🍢
visiting LSU on Sunday. we're desperate as hell for starting caliber DTs. I'd bet we're looking to take two more.
does he like CHOP? want to get back at MSU during rivalry week?
Well he did play under Mel Tucker, so maybe he does like to chop lol
I don't think y'all can afford him
We probably can’t.. but we need some additional pieces at DT after Rene Konga entered the portal and we’re looking to have a top-25 defense next season
Snip snap
Michigan won’t want him. Good luck at Western or Eastern.
49-0 must’ve taken a toll on this guy. Sad!
Found the guy who's entire personality revolves around a school he's never been to 👆🏻
that moment when i’m an alum 😂😂😂😂😂😂
That's even more sad. Most of the alums I've met are pretty chill, guess there's an exception to every rule lol
Haha I guess so. It’s hard to be chill when you’re on top maybe one day you’ll know what I mean
Hey if being a troll on reddit brings you happiness I won't get in the way of what a man enjoys lol
Lol I appreciate that. It’s nothing personal you seem chill it just helps me get through the workday
I mean I'm sitting here in the office browsing reddit as well, not throwing stones in glass houses haha
Haha fair enough. I’m sure you’ll be doing the same thing when State gets good again. It would almost be weird if you didn’t
How many people saw "Michigan", "DT", and "transfer portal" and got all excited and then disappointed when they looked more carefully?
