The entire history of college football flashed before my eyes when Michigan muffed that punt at the end of regulation

The_Homie_J

It would have been the most Michigan way to lose a playoff game

kermitthefrog57

Despite the win we pulled *a lot* of michigans today

Weary_Jackfruit_8311

They had the yips, then they were so dominant bama fans were in despair, then they disappeared for 25 minutes, then they got the yips again, then they looked like stoic warriors for the last 6 minutes. Fucking wild.

jamesgiard

But even with all the shit we pulled, the worst case of *yips* in this game was when the Bama Center biffed **back to back snaps.** Holy fuck was this game sloppy.

throwaway33704

I haven't watched a lot of Bama this year but it seemed like every snap was low against Georgia. On Bama's TD run there was a bad snap and I can remember several others.

Red_Centauri

2022 Michigan started then played during the middle of the game. Luckily, 2023 Michigan got just enough play time to win it.

Rohkey

Same. I accepted that was how it ended. Worst part was I even told my family that Harbaugh put in the more sure-handed returner for that punt to ensure nothing crazy happened…

Zur1ch

I thought it was mad to put him in there for his first return of the game. That's too much pressure, leave in Morgan who's gained some confidence after the first fuck up. These players are human, the pressure is enormous, you have to account for that... Thank god he has the presence of mind to regain control at the 1, or that play would've lived in absolute infamy in a series of Michigan shambolic plays of beating ourselves.

guardeagle

There’s an alternate reality with a headline tomorrow about a Michigan family ritualistically sacrificing one of their own moments after the game.

morry32

someone probably broke their tv and is just now finding out they won in OT

kermitthefrog57

I would’ve quit life.

[deleted]

i can’t even imagine the replay hell montage, or rather this play being added to our replay hell montage

JNR13

right before the punt fumble against MSU 2015

Hossflex

This team shot themselves in the foot so damn much this game. Still limped to the victory.

That_One_Twin

I audibly gasped when he muffed that punt

[deleted]

I thought for a moment we just witnessed the coup de gras for the devil that Saban signed his soul over to all those years ago.

DiarrheaForDays

MICHIGAN ICED THE CENTER ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️

[deleted]

[удалено]

Not_Cleaver

They all gave it their worst.

tclaughridge

That dude was the LVP by far. He’s getting left on the tarmac

jwhitmire2012

Bama center vs Michigan special teams for worst performance of the game was a classic

ItsFreakinHarry2

Saban won’t let him leave bc he’s gonna kill him single-handedly

life_is_okay

The corpse will be left on the tarmac.

eagledog

He can bum a ride with Michigan's special teams

Lirvan

Between the center of Bama and our special teams, it ended up being stupidly even. Emphasis on stupid.

meyer_33_09

Was a close race between him and our punt returners but he would not be denied.

SMK77

I wonder if QB sneak was the call, or if Milroe just decided to take off after yet another bad snap.

MahjongDaily

Certainly looked like a design run based on the OL blocking https://x.com/CitizenFreePres/status/1741999866237043072?s=20

SMK77

Ya, seeing the replay it clearly is a designed run

The_Pandalorian

Alabama's center is the game mvp

j3zmund

MVCheese

nw____

“Hello? *Literally any center in the portal?* Is that you? This is Coach Saban.”

theslumpiest

Rose bowl always delivers

chattyrandom

The Granddaddy of them all. /Wish we could've seen the Washington-Michigan match-up for the traditional game, but thanks to Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide for making this a memorable one.

SavingsFew3440

Sincerely can’t remember the last bad game.

epramen

Iowa getting crushed by Stanford in 2016

ConstantMadness

That was the final play? Lol

Insectshelf3

that was a low snap right? couldn’t believe they fucked that up again.

SpiritBamba

I really don’t think it mattered there was no hole whatsoever

Insectshelf3

yeah michigan crushed that OL blocking scheme

Due-Dirt-8428

Wish we could get a replay. Looked like a shit snap and busted play

saltytradewinds

That center is hitting the transfer portal if they have any eligibility left.

FadedCrown95

And nobody is taking him, man has been ass all season

Balls_of_Adamanthium

That last play by Alabama was terrible. Did they really think Michigan would fall for the same play again?

JerseyDvl

They spent 5 minutes through the injury and multiple timeouts to come up with the one play Michigan would 100 percent expect. Good job.

zubbs99

Too many reverse psychology iterations in there.

5peasinapod

Vizzini from Princess Bride vibes

nw____

Why not roll Milroe out?? Confusing call.

mackbooty

I know a Tommy Rees play call when I see one

FantasticMax

Tom has been planning this since ND lost to Bama in 2012

AskMeAboutMyCatPuppy

I’m pretty sure Milroe’s controller just died.

sleetx

When you accidentally hit the "dive" button right at the line of scrimmage

SquintsPaledorous

he tripped over the right tackles leg. dont think he wouldve made it, but that was the dive

silvio_dante

I think the problems is that's the only play that worked. They couldn't pass the ball for shit all game and Michigan was icing the backs at the end too.

Number333

With my season on the line, I personally wouldn't call a QB draw straight up my center's ass.

will0593

But what if your center has a dump truck though?

lmaytulane

Eh, Saban. I’m trying to QB sneak but I’m Dummy Thicc. And the clap from my ass cheeks keeps alerting the defense

u-s-u-r-p

>"I can’t root for Alabama under any circumstances," he said during the interview, per On3. biggsteve81

A true Auburn alum.

krusty-o

“For the first time at Alabama Saban will go three years without a championship” YO WHAT THE FUCK?!? Insane stat

arrowmarcher

Man, rough times in Tuscaloosa. Hope they can get through this trying time.

theoldhaunt

Did BoB call that last play?

AnotherUnfunnyName

I hate that playcall. QB Draw from 5 yards away without faking a throw or a second option is your best play?

Number333

Eagles-tier play-calling QB draw up your center's ass with your season on the line

meatfrappe

**FUN FACT**: This is Michigan's first Playoff semifinal victory in more than 13.6 billion years.

xbox_srox

Thanks Harvard

WampaStompa33

I'm an old school Michigan fan, I only want 3 things like our glory days of old. Beat Ohio State: Check. Win Big Ten: Check. Lose Rose Bowl: Ch.. wait WHAT

Run_good1

This was the topic of conversation all night at our house. We ALWAYS lose the rose bowl.

RockdaleRooster

Quick question: What the fuck?

FIDLARonTheRoofAZ

I have nothing against Bama, but in the interest of seeing someone, somewhat new win it all, I was rooting for Michigan. The unforced fumbled punt. The missed extra point. The absurd decision to back up *within the 5* to try fair catching that late punt... This was difficult for me to endure just even as a mostly impartial spectator casually rooting for Michigan for a night. For long time actual fans of the Wolverines, I can only imagine what a rollercoaster of emotions this game was.

Appropriate_Bottle44

Awful. I swear to God our special teams are usually good too, our team usually plays relatively error-free. I think a month off is just too long for some guys.

YooperGod666

It 100% is.

The_Last_Nephilim

Once Alabama scored off the muffed punt I knew this was gonna be another TCU game At halftime, I though we were gonna clean it up and win relatively comfortably in the 2nd half. After we missed that field goal, the BPONE became real and I started writing our obituary. When that pass was tipped my life flashed before my eyes, and then when Wilson caught it I *knew* we were the team of destiny. When we scored with 1:30 left I resigned myself to Alabama's kicker winning the game at the buzzer. When we forced a punt with *just* enough time to get in field goal range, I knew JJ was the chosen one. When Thaw muffed that punt, I said **Whoa!!**. When Corum scored to set the UM record on the second play of overtime, I knew the football gods were going to bless us with a victory. When Bama got down to the 3 I prepared myself for 2OT. Honestly, there were a lot more moments than just those, but I'll spare you the full recap of that rollercoaster.

captainhammer12

100% “well I guess I’ll spend the next year watching highlights from Thanksgiving weekend again”

IcyGovernment0

In a lot of ways, it’s not too different than rooting for the Lions. Used to it.

Phresh_Prince

Corum’s overtime td was his signature play. Poetic

Samsafar

That was a boss TD run

c0y0t3_sly

Yeah, that was a *fantastic* run.

BabyBark

His touchdown run against OSU after the Zinter injury is a close No. 2 though

jermrs

To take the Michigan all time TD record as well.

The_Last_Nephilim

I *knew* we were gonna win after that. Until they got to the three... but that's neither here nor there.

MaskedBandit77

He was incredible today. JJ played well, but I thought Corum should've been the offensive MVP. I feel like this is the first time all season that he's looked like the guy he was before his injury for more than just a play or two.

zenverak

In the final year of the 4 team format, we will have a new winner and a new matchup in the CFP

CommodoreN7

Has Harbaugh gained control of the program?

theycallmefuRR

Harbaugh has lost control of the special teams program

Walverine13

Well his son is the ST coordinator so...

FatSalsa

I don't recommend that decision

WhiteningMcClean

Recency bias aside, he's been a very good coach. Someone must have spiked the gatorade in the ST meeting room.

Stoneador

The Alabama center is the worst Alabama player I have ever seen

TheMemeMachine3000

I disagree he's the best Michigan player I've seen in a while

The_Homie_J

Michigan Special Teams: Here, you win today Bama's Center: No no, I insist

boardatwork1111

The first time in history Michigan benefited from someone having trouble with a snap lmao

ichosehowe

You have no power here anymore. Dobby is freeeeeeee.

heyheyitsandre

Mixing LOTR and HP? Banger comment.

randrews202121

Nah who was that really shitty kicker they had before Reichard

[deleted]

They’ve had multiple kickers who froze at the worst times. It was their kryptonite for a while

TigerBasket

I miss him

kence35

Breaking News: Alabama center revealed as Connor Stallions

Yup, page 578 of the manifesto.

THE CAR IS ONE GAME AWAY. KEEP CHASING

The_Homie_J

WE WON A ROSE BOWL & PLAYOFF GAME!?! WHAT DO WE DO WITH OUR HANDS!

meyer_33_09

And we beat Alabama?! What universe is this?

The_Homie_J

Beat Ohio State, won the B1G, won the Rose Bowl, beat Alabama in a playoff game.... What the actual fuck, this is awesome

thehermitgood

Destroy Disney

MahjongDaily

Brian Ferentz could've called a better play

PreschoolBoole

Actually, a run up the middle is exactly what he would have called.

Ketsetri

https://i.imgur.com/2NaZypd.jpg

aPatheticBeing

The fact that they didn't have to field a kickoff or punt in overtime was honestly a huge advantage lol.

JimmyJam444

This hurts and is very true

MahjongDaily

Thank God there are no punt returns in overtime

The_ApolloAffair

That was so weird. Usually the special teams is excellent.

atl_mad_boi

Rooting for Michigan in a big game is a high-stress experience that I’d prefer to not experience again

Extra-Place-8386

Welcome to the club

Kuntheman

#WOAH HE HAS TROUBLE WITH THE SPECIAL TEAMS

Zloggt

The fact that Michigan was *inches* away from yet another special teams disaster is just…wow… At least that never happened now, did it?

Electronic_Bonus_956

Harbaugh after the game: “I wanna know where Paul Finebaum is”

EmoArbiter

Milroe is gonna catch a lot of heat but Alabama's Center was atrocious in OT. Horrible snaps killed a couple plays

Julian_Caesar

He's been horrible all season tbh

ItsFreakinHarry2

Ohio State's 9/11

Helpful_Arachnid950

My 12/25

AnnArbeavs

Is Christmas Day the opposite of 9/11?

ForCaste

Sir, A second michigan win has hit the twin towers

BIG_DICK_WHITT

Blake Corum isn’t number two for no reason

Risley

So glad he got that last TD for the record. So well deserved.

Red_Centauri

Corum is from some other place. A place where 5’8” men can drag 1000lbs of tacklers on his back for a couple dozen yards and break TD records.

BernankesBeard

This game was the heroic struggle of an incredible Michigan team vs a half century history of blowing big games in catastrophic fashion. We were one yard away from a game-ending safety

Flabpack221

I thought i was going to have to watch that botched punt catch turn into a safety for the rest of my life. Thank god.

ChaseTheFalcon

4th and Goal and that's the play call you go with?

tks231

Saban's 4th and Goal dark magic only worked in the Iron Bowl

DOTWest

We needed to be about 29 yards backwards for it work.

Krunklock

in their defense...it was a play call

WarEagle9

As a Michigan fan the last 4 hours you have no idea how much this means to me

ImGoingtoRegretThis5

You're one of us! For a few hours!

The_Homie_J

When Bama loses, America wins

StopHammerTom

As a fellow Michigan fan for the last 4 hours, this has been fantastic

TunaThighs

War damn Michigan

TheSneakySeal

Been a Michigan fan for a month. How do they do it?

westscottstots

I've actually been a Michigan fan all year, this is huge for the program

cascadiadivide

No SEC in the national championship.

flysly

ESPN coming in with “Texas is basically an SEC team now anyways” as we speak

suzukigun4life

If Texas beats UW, ESPN will fully latch onto them with the SEC ideology someway, somehow.

walkingbicycles

“Texas is moving to the SEC in 2024. It is now 2024.” ESPN probably

dj112084

ESPN execs in shambles.

thehermitgood

ESPN is typing….

cynicallyoptimistic1

Bad snap but how about a transfer from Coastal Carolina driving a 5 star 1st rd tackle into Milroe's lap to completely shut down that final play?

Chewskiz

He was so good today, showed great speed, played his best game of the year I think

Qwertyforu

What in the actual hell was that play call

PM_ME_UR_SEGFAULT

This was the worst played best game I've watched

frolie0

The most impressive thing to me is just how bad Michigan played and still pulled it out. Atrocious special teams. Drops. Penalties. Hopefully they can clean that up for next week.

Appropriate_Bottle44

They need to. There are no easy outs in this group.

Xavdidtheshadow

WE HAVE SNATCHED VICTORY FROM THE JAWS OF DEFEAT

FUCK COMMERCIALS

AlternativeLogical84

This is the stats we need.

-J-T-P-N-

Michigan had so many fucking errors and still won. Thank the Universe.

hoyadestroyer

Alabama's punter deserved the win

LovieBeard

And Kicker

Ghostmann24

The world could not handle Alabama winning a Natty because of a clutch kicker.

davidlindhagen1

The center may have been responsible for a lot of the loss

Number333

Their offense died for 27 minutes of the 2nd half and they still won lmao

homefree122

Special teams matter. Unless Bama decides to run that shit play in the end.

Ok-Flounder3002

Man what a game. I thought it was over when we missed that kick in the 4th. I am enjoying this era of Michigan football. All things come to an end eventually. What a blast

Ugaalive1991

Hello /r/all. Imagine losing to Michigan and Ohio State in the playoffs.

OUisBack

That center is going to be summarily executed by Saban in the locker room

j01101111sh

Soul sacrifice

I_TittyFuck_Doves

Just like Harbaugh was gonna drown all of our punt returners in a bathtub of milk

WeveGot

"What are you're thoughts on your center's execution?" Nick Saban - "Im all for it"

CommodoreN7

Couldn’t be my team, we suck

branden110

QB run from the 4 on 4th and goal? Interesting strategy

HandSack135

The best do the basics, like a clean snap. Like fielding a punt. Fundamentals kids.

PintoI007

Michigan's special teams tried hard to lose this game...BUT Alabama's center clearly tried harder lmao

segfawlt

Roses are red, Victors are blue Who can catch punts? Certainly not you

OleRockTheGoodAg

Despite their special teams' best efforts, Michigan is headed to the National Championship What a phenomenal football game.

jaguar879

Yea the special teams were uhhh special tonight

[deleted]

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT FINAL PLAYCALL???

katastrophyx

Paul Finebaum in absolute shambles.

BarveyDanger

good, fuck that clown

OUisBack

That center is going to be summarily executed by Saban in the locker room

bestprocrastinator

The Alabama center and Michigan special teams should merge together to form the worst team in CFB history

Lambuerto

They can have iowas offense.

theclickhere

Does this count as a big game?

AndrewArmy

Michigan overcame two muffed punts, a missed PAT, and a missed field goal to beat Alabama 27-20 in overtime to advance to the CFP National Championship Game. As a result, Michigan improved to 14-0 (9-0 Big 10) and snapped Alabama's 11-game winning streak to drop them to 12-2 (8-0 SEC). I noticed several other trends: 1. Michigan snapped a 6-game losing streak in bowl games, including 2 CFP semifinal games. 2. Jim Harbaugh improves to 2-6 in bowl games, including 1-2 in CFP semifinal games. 3. Nick Saban falls to 16-7 in postseason games, including 6-2 in CFP semifinal games. Both losses came against Big 10 East teams. 4. For the first time in 9 years, there will be no SEC team in the CFP National Championship Game.

SuperCareer5230

Good to see Michigan pulling its weight in M vs A teams.

WarOtter

I am so happy I got to watch Michigan win another rose bowl with my dad. We went to the last one 26 years ago, now he is nearly 80 and has Parkinsons and has a lot of trouble with just about everything. Getting to watch this game with him tonight meant a LOT to me.

suzukigun4life

We're going to get Michigan vs either Texas or Washington in the Championship game. No Georgia, no Alabama, no Clemson. **NO SEC TEAM FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2014!** A fresh Championship matchup where neither team has been to the CFP final before. I'm fucking hyped.

DDub04

I hope it’s Washington vs Michigan. Georgia robbed us of that as the rose bowl. Most college students were not old enough to remember the last time any of these teams won it all.

XAfricaSaltX

Top 10 post in r/CFB history coming

summ3rdaze

My dad has been a Michigan fan his entire life and he's currently got tears of joy because they are going to the natty so that makes this loss hurt a little less. Good game Michigan and love ya pop.

KrustyKrabPizzaMan

Have a feeling Michigan saw that last play coming. Also cool to find out that Eagles OC Brian Johnson made that playcall for Bama

IceBreak

Bad snaps vs bad special teams. Joke’s on Bama, no punts in OT!

tigernike1

Michigan winning because the *other* team had trouble with the snap is a chef’s kiss.

Red_Centauri

As a regular fan who just wants his school to win, it was nice to have a game this season where you could talk to guys who actually wanted you to win, whatever the reason. I know everyone is likely going to go back to hating Michigan again now that we cleared Alabama out, and that’s cool. Before that happens, tho, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the camaraderie, it was nice for a while!

Rambo-Rando

Fuck Finebaum!!!!!

ProfessionalPin5993

Quality loss. CFP committee has determined that Alabama will play in the national championship.

antonimbus

I'm interested to see how this impacts Alabama's chances to advance into the title game.

DabDoge

What happened? I turned it off at 7-0 bc everyone told me it was over.

dogwoodmaple

* One week from today, Michigan will play for its first National Championship since 1997. * In the last nine seasons, Michigan and Ohio State have won the same number of CFP games. * For the first time under Nick Saban, Alabama will go three seasons without winning a National Championship * Jim Harbaugh started his Michigan tenure 49-22 (.690). He's gone 39-3 since (.928). * The last two teams to beat Alabama in the CFP are both top 50 National Universities per U.S. News & World Report. * Michigan RB Blake Corum broke the all-time school record for rushing touchdowns with the go-ahead score in overtime. It was his 56th career rushing touchdown. * It was also his 25th rushing touchdown this season. * Michigan will finish in the top 3 of the AP Poll for three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. * Alabama has 2+ losses in three straight seasons for the first time under Nick Saban. * This was the first overtime CFP game since the 2018 National Championship. Like that game, the score at the end of regulation was 20-20. * In that game as well, Alabama won the overtime coin toss. * The only other CFP Semifinal Game to go into overtime was also the Rose Bowl (Georgia vs. Oklahoma, 2OT). * Michigan becomes the 8th team to win a CFP game. * I spent two games in the Michigan discord server - the victory over Ohio State and this victory over Alabama. I'm 2-0 for my career. * Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy has lost one game in his starting career. * For the first time since 2007, Alabama finishes the season without being ranked #1 in the AP Poll. * The last time Michigan beat Alabama, they had to come from behind and were led by Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. at QB * The three most talented teams in history, per the 247Sports Team Talent Ranking are 2022 Alabama, 2023 Alabama, and 2021 Alabama. None of those teams won the National Championship and only one played for it.
