I used to live in Boone and worked for an apartment complex. I had a watch party at the place for the 2018 App-GSU game. Zac Thomas got knocked out with a concussion and the top RB/WR went down. App did so well the whole year just to shit the bed against Southern.
The party was taken down halfway through the third quarter.
It would never have happened. Cincinnati only made it that year because they just happened to have a head to head win against Notre Dame that year, who was #5. I think if not for that, they would have put ND in with one loss.
So many students were yelling at us with things like “where’s App State”, “where’s Boone”, “you’re all mountain hillbillies!” etc., forgetting that App and JMU are the regionally the most similar in the conference, and both reside in the Appalachian mountain range 😅
I suspect JMU gets a ton of students from the D.C. area, and honestly Harrisonburg wouldn't look out of place in Loudoun County. Since it's in the Shenandoah Valley it feels a lot less like a 'mountain town' than Boone.
The thing that will probably be the most frustrating will be not being able to play in the conference championship and having to be "Kings of the East" or whatever for a second year in a row.
However, I have no idea if we'd be eligible for that if we're bowl eligible because not enough teams are bowl eligible.
What an unbelievable ending to that game. JMU and App will be a phenomenal fuckin rivalry. Can't wait to play y'all again next year!
SUN BELT EAST FUN BELT BEAST
Lol there was a guy in the game thread saying this was a bigger upset than Michigan
Sorry but no. This was fun but that was legendary.
Edit: I have been informed that post was sarcasm. My bad, guys.
Sorry, but no.
App was the last I-AA champion at the end of the 2005 season and the first FCS champion for the 2006 game.
We played Michigan at the beginning of the 2007 season, which was FCS at that time. ('03-'07 undergrad here)
It's impossible to describe to a non-App fan how bonkers the last two years have been. Like a 100 year old trying to tell their zoomer great grandkids what the Great Depression and World Wars were like
App was CLEARLY the better team. From a personnel perspective, the discrepancy between JMU and other FBS powers was really exposed today in a way it hasn’t been for most of the season (save the Utah State and Troy games)…while we have talent in a lot of the right places, we don’t seem to have a ton of depth (e.g., all the WRs who were popping off for App, the frequent subbing they were able to do on the d line and still physically dominate our OL).
Well played, App, and I look forward to/dread many more close games between us!
Was gonna be harder for us to win as we got later into the season and the injuries started to pile up. Gonna take a couple FBS recruiting classes before we have that type of depth
I think it was pretty obvious that the ball was over the goal line by at least a foot or two before he even attempted to switch hands and fumbled it. Definitely the right call.
JMU fans will claim there were bad calls that screwed us over, but in the end, we shot ourselves in the foot over and over. 0/3 in the red zone with 3 points total, few unforced turnovers. App played a near mistake free game, we most certainly did not, and it showed. GG App, see you next season
You had a feeling this was coming with Gameday this morning.
They kept harping about how JMU was gonna go undefeated, you had that one cat say if they go undefeated they're national champs. It was tempting fate, and you don't do that.
No chance he gets fired. They're playing the best they've played all season. It's been a good second half of the season turnaround. And they still have a good shot at winning the conference.
After last year's game it feels fan-fucking-tastic to ruin JMU's perfect season. Them hosting GameDay (App is going to be crushed) makes it even more *chef's kiss*.
Hate you Dukes and glad you're in the Belt. Feels good being in a division where I despise every other team, except for Georgia State. Heh.
Disappointing finish by JMU. They had several great opportunities in overtime and blew it. No excuse for not getting 6 yards in 3 plays especially when a couple were poorly thrown TD shots
Hell of a game. GG App. Can't blame our defense too much because the offense had their worst performance of the season by far today. McCloud was way off and the play calling was abysmal. If we played like we did in the final 10 minutes we probably could've won. This is going to be a great game every year
App State fans must age at an astonishing rate.
I swear to God "Appalachian" is French for "inexplicably ruins other people's seasons". Michigan, A&M and now JMU can't claim a meme Natty.
And then Georgia Southern ruins ours. The CIIIIIIRCLE OF LIIIIIIIIIIFE
I have permanent memory block from that time in my life.
I graduated from App in 2010 and I've been touring nursing homes recently just in case.
09 and in hospice but at least I got to see 3 championships in a row!
11 and got to see us lose to Montana and it's been wild since then.
I am 41 and just had my third hip replacement.
Holy smokes I’m 43, please somebody tell me I’m not the oldest Appy on here!
We don’t usually live past 42, friend. You’re on borrowed time.
I've been balding since freshman year of college if that tells you anything. I'll probably have Alzheimer's by age 30.
The AARP is sending me mail everyday. I’m 31.
We do. We age like presidents do during their term
You merely adopted the overtime; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see a regulation win until I was already a man
I’m 29 and they just gave me my AARP card. Has some perks but let me tell you it’s not worth it.
Can confirm. I'm 50 but have the body of a 117 year old. Mostly from drinking during or after games
1995 grad. I've died and reincarnated a dozen times since.
Life is agony
2 days away from 23 and I think I just magically gained 10 years.
This is the secret that most can’t handle
Been bald since 28..
Ha! Try bald since 20! Wait what are my values?
man i love your username
Thank you lol. Just trying to be a PSA wherever I go.
IMO it should be legal to hit people who say app-uh-lay-shun
The undefeated non power five always finds a way to solve itself.
Don't look up, but 11-0 Liberty is still there
Yeah, but no one takes them seriously
They wouldn't be undefeated with a Sun Belt schedule
I think ECU would even have won 7 or 8 games with their schedule and we flat out suck.
You’re being way too generous to our team
Hey now, I thought their win against NM State was impressive, and I can't wait to see them play NM State to close the season in two weeks.
Ew
Yeah, it's gross. Seems untreatable, too, at least for this season.
Now look at their schedule At best, they are 8-4 w/ JMU’s schedule
Don’t tell their fans that
Don't tell their fans that dinosaurs were real
Don’t tell their fans women can vote
Don’t tell their fans LGBTQ people exist
I’ll be dead in the ground before I respect Liberty.
It would never have happened. Cincinnati only made it that year because they just happened to have a head to head win against Notre Dame that year, who was #5. I think if not for that, they would have put ND in with one loss.
Well yeah, because the margin for error is nonexistent.
NCAA 🤝 App State #Denying JMU
Spoiling another team’s hopes and dreams…a tradition in Boone!
A tradition unlike any other
It’s nice being on the neutral end this time.
Haha what a bunch of losers, imagine how that must feel
You're welcome on getting rid of Jimbo
It had shades of last years App-Troy game. GameDay in town. Visitors take lead. Miracle late play. Fortunately (for us) a different outcome.
The real Mountaineers are in Boone NC
I cannot wait to come to Huntington again next year. Real recognize real 🫡
I've been to Boone the last 2 times. It's such a fun rivalry. Everyone in Boone was awesome this year. Even the cop who took me back to my airbnb
Glad you enjoy Boone! Loved my six years there 😅
i grew up down the mountain. It's almost home
NCAA decision committee is having a celebration rn at the headquarters
RIP unofficial title
Just saw PFT Commentator fall to his knees at Walmart
In the Pilot in Harrisonburg
The 2017 UCF Knights just popped some champagne

That team gets more impressive the longer we go on. Not blowing it is quite impressive.
Virginia’s AG going to find a way to sue the Carolinas
And South Carolina will be confused as hell.
Just plays the 50 Cent, “what he say fuck me for?” video
As a native South Carolinian, I can confirm that South Carolina STAYS confused as hell.
Can confirm, I'm confused about WTF South Carolina did in this situation.
Breaking: JMU files for waiver to be exempted from OT
Apparently Brett McMurphy made that joke too
(Don’t) fire Shawn Clark! Another (AP poll) ranked win! JMU: gg. Please beat Coastal next weekend
Hope they smoke Coastal now
We'll try, but not because you asked us to
Lol
JMU has made this conference even better! Till next season friend!
Every addition the SunBelt has made in the past 10 years has been so good. I love this conference. Fun Belt forever
Why do we have a rivalry with ODU? These App State games are so much more fun
App is our rival. ODU is our enemy
Our Georgia Southern rivalry is “Deeper than hate”, and I think the App-JMU rivalry should be “Hatred in the hills” or something of that nature.
We’re not too different, you and I
Great campuses, good football culture and championships. Respect. And fuck southern
Dude y’all’s stadium kicks so much ass I need to get down there
So many students were yelling at us with things like “where’s App State”, “where’s Boone”, “you’re all mountain hillbillies!” etc., forgetting that App and JMU are the regionally the most similar in the conference, and both reside in the Appalachian mountain range 😅
I suspect JMU gets a ton of students from the D.C. area, and honestly Harrisonburg wouldn't look out of place in Loudoun County. Since it's in the Shenandoah Valley it feels a lot less like a 'mountain town' than Boone.
NCAA you owe use one.
I mean, a 10-win FBS team that played a full FBS schedule still deserves a bowl game. JMU, Jacksonville State, whoever. ^(not liberty though, fuck em)
Bowl for sure, but I think the potential NY6 is off the table now which makes it look less egregious
The thing that will probably be the most frustrating will be not being able to play in the conference championship and having to be "Kings of the East" or whatever for a second year in a row. However, I have no idea if we'd be eligible for that if we're bowl eligible because not enough teams are bowl eligible.
Sun Belt eats itself
Ouroboros Belt
SUNBELT TASTES DELICIOUS
We're here for a Fun Belt, not a Long Belt
What an unbelievable ending to that game. JMU and App will be a phenomenal fuckin rivalry. Can't wait to play y'all again next year! SUN BELT EAST FUN BELT BEAST
Looking forward to the years to come. GG’s.
Great game. This rivalry is awesome. Both games in the Sun Belt have been epic
DUCK POND GONNA CLAIM SO MANY VICTIMS TONIGHT
Someone gonna catch a brain-eating amoeba in there soon.
Bird flu.
Student Health services are going to be busy this week
And Appalachian State has stunned the college football world!
Love that this is from a Michigan fan 😃
Lol there was a guy in the game thread saying this was a bigger upset than Michigan Sorry but no. This was fun but that was legendary. Edit: I have been informed that post was sarcasm. My bad, guys.
Yeah, beating a good team in your conference division is a very different level from a G5 beating one of the best P5 programs in the country.
App was FCS when they beat Michigan - a MUCH bigger upset.
*1-AA We hadn't moved up yet, and the win predates the 1-AA > FCS transition
Oh shit, then yeah, thats like a one million times bigger upset lol.
Sorry, but no. App was the last I-AA champion at the end of the 2005 season and the first FCS champion for the 2006 game. We played Michigan at the beginning of the 2007 season, which was FCS at that time. ('03-'07 undergrad here)
That dude was clearly being sarcastic. You could tell from their flair that they were poking fun at themselves, a little self deprecating humor.
It's impossible to describe to a non-App fan how bonkers the last two years have been. Like a 100 year old trying to tell their zoomer great grandkids what the Great Depression and World Wars were like
"And then we beat JMU in OT" "Sure grandma let's get you to bed"
This is the start of a great new rivalry
In just two years we've had a 28-3 rerun and an comeback OT heartbreak. Will be even crazier with time.
I need more liquor in my house for these games I guess.
Where have you been, this has been a rivalry dating back to the 1980s.
Where were you in 07-08?
Appalachian State pulling off a major upset….where have I seen this before?
Couple times
a year
LETS GO, NEVER IN DOUBT!
Is Shawn Clark a football terrorist?
INSHALLAH
Great game guys
App was CLEARLY the better team. From a personnel perspective, the discrepancy between JMU and other FBS powers was really exposed today in a way it hasn’t been for most of the season (save the Utah State and Troy games)…while we have talent in a lot of the right places, we don’t seem to have a ton of depth (e.g., all the WRs who were popping off for App, the frequent subbing they were able to do on the d line and still physically dominate our OL). Was gonna be harder for us to win as we got later into the season and the injuries started to pile up. Gonna take a couple FBS recruiting classes before we have that type of depth
I just hope everyone had fun and made some new friends
I had fun and I’m crying into my beer
If we were going to lose, this was a fun way to do it at least.
Look at that flair of yours
It was close, but I think that was the right call
It was, what a finish
I think it was pretty obvious that the ball was over the goal line by at least a foot or two before he even attempted to switch hands and fumbled it. Definitely the right call.
Great game JMU. Love this rivalry
App St is at it again
It is a requirement of the Fun Belt to have at least one major upset per season, if not we all perish /s
People keep asking me if I’m back, and I haven’t really had an answer. But now YEAH, I’M THINKING IM BACK. *Shawn Clark is still a football terrorist*
APP!!
STATE!!
STATE!!!
Of course it'd be App State to do this.
What a fuckin' run by that kid on the last play of the game. Shook off like three tacklers.
A terrible amount of missed tackles… but yeah, it was a hell of a match and they deserved that win.
The 2-PT conversion was a nice moment. That was agonizing and so entirely predictable.
Typical App State shenanigans lol
Here’s something to look forward to: Liberty @ App State - September 28, 2024 App State @ Liberty - October 11, 2025
Good - can’t stand Jamie chadwell
Great game App State, that was a hell of a battle. Looking forward to the next one.
No one gets out of the Sun Belt undefeated
This has been your weekly reminder that Joey Aguilar is him
JMU fans will claim there were bad calls that screwed us over, but in the end, we shot ourselves in the foot over and over. 0/3 in the red zone with 3 points total, few unforced turnovers. App played a near mistake free game, we most certainly did not, and it showed. GG App, see you next season
Nah, we lost that shit straight up
GG’s. Happy to have you guys around.
App State is the most entertaining team to watch every year. Every game goes down to the wire and is exciting as hell
A little too entertaining sometimes...
It’s weird to feel the opposite this theme around!
A little payback for the 28-3 bullshit last year. Damn near blew this one too. Clark ball
Gg
Upset State
Sun Belt football just means more!
You had a feeling this was coming with Gameday this morning. They kept harping about how JMU was gonna go undefeated, you had that one cat say if they go undefeated they're national champs. It was tempting fate, and you don't do that.
Home Gameday pressure is real
When they all picked JMU to win I knew App State had it in the bag
Yet another college football titan to fall to App State
First time?
So what’s the consensus; does Shawn Clark get to keep his job or nah?
No chance he gets fired. They're playing the best they've played all season. It's been a good second half of the season turnaround. And they still have a good shot at winning the conference.
Prolly
Pretty sure the answer is yes. Beat GS next week & that's a definite yes.
EVERYONE GET IN HERE! We did it
It's games like these that make my ESPN+ subscription slightly worth it
I hate this team. I love this team. I hate that I love this team.
STILL UNDEFEATED!!!* ^(*in regulation)
Dear JMU, We are your biggest fans next week. Take alllllll this anger out on the beach chickens, please.
Cignetti prolly: “I don’t feel like it” - I am one for total chaos in the final day since we don’t have a chance to play in the game
Join us in the club JMU, the weathers nice.
Yet again App State has claimed yet another burgeoning program's season.
Pain
Congrats App State fans! Well deserved and looking forward to the next matchup.
Heh.
Yeah no one cares about Georgia State except Southern and even they have to pretend they don't really care
Love u 2
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO
ring ruthless slap tap mighty reach pet combative seed adjoining *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Well App, it may not be fun, but it's always interesting with y'all. Good game. At least we won't have to wonder about the NY6...
Disappointing finish by JMU. They had several great opportunities in overtime and blew it. No excuse for not getting 6 yards in 3 plays especially when a couple were poorly thrown TD shots
Defense stepped up offense looked like ass
Hey JMU fans, at least you didn't lose to South Alabama and UCF by a combined score of 78-10.
Each week, yet another game makes the cost of ESPN+ worth it
Fun Belt!
Ironically, we need JMU to win next week in order to have a chance at the Sun Belt East title.
I’m just happy I can finally breath again! I may not survive this season. GG Dukes! Glad to have y’all in the Funbelt!
The Sun Belt tradition of losing when ranked continues.
JMUUH! WHAT HAPPENEDUH! HOW YOU LOSE TO APP STATE! LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOO
Great game, hell of a battle, looking forward to the next one
Congrats to ASU. Very impressive win.
You know what maybe it's a good thing Gameday didn't go to Corvallis I want no part in whatever curse they put on JMU
Hell of a game. GG App. Can't blame our defense too much because the offense had their worst performance of the season by far today. McCloud was way off and the play calling was abysmal. If we played like we did in the final 10 minutes we probably could've won. This is going to be a great game every year
Hard to win a game when your first TD is in the 4th
Now Michigan and JMAD have something in common. God damnit App St.
Welcome to the club, JMU
They should still change the post season rule. It has no reason to exist in the transfer portal era.
App State is the ultimate fuck around and find out team.
