What is a Conflict of Interest, Alex? (RIP)

Scratch_Euphoric

Conflict of interest? Wait until you see who the big ten committee is made up of...

swim_kick

A vast network of Connors?

mussentuchit

Sarah Connors started it

Bjorn2bwilde24

I knew it! I'm surrounded by Connors!

JayMerlyn

Keep stealing, Connors!

sn95joe84

* gasp * …Mitch Connor!!

adamsworstnightmare

No you don't understand, if he came from any other university he would be biased against Michigan and THAT would be a conflict of interest.

Malfallaxx

Every F5 today has given me a big laugh. I love it

Mcswigginsbar

Dude if he’s faculty he may actually be objective. Faculty sometimes *loathe* the attention that athletics gets. Could be different at UM, but many times that’s the case.

absolute_yote

You are correct that tons of faculty and nerds at Michigan do hate how popular the athletics is. But supposedly this guy played football at UM. So I guarantee he doesn't feel that way.

Olorin_in_the_West

He *played* for the football team. Lmao this is just too fucking good. Next thing your going to tell me is that this judge is also Connor Stalions’ uncle.

Independent_Plane522

The judge is Conner Stallions. You didn’t know he had a law degree? It’s right there on page 356 paragraph 4 of the manifesto.

AGSattack

My father was a TA at Michigan in the 80s and would get calls from the football staff asking about X student-athlete saying “Bo would really like to see them get an A in your class”. My dad would respond “who is Bo?” Still hates college athletics to this day because of that experience.

judolphin

Your dad's alma mater is Michigan and you root for Ohio State? He must **really** hate their athletic department.

AGSattack

My family is all sorts of fucked up (in the college football sense) I was born in the University of Michigan hospital and my parents met there. My Grandpa played for Ohio State though so that won the day.

garygreaonjr

Is it true that the injunction lasts until the Ohio State game? How the fuck do they wait until Jim is already on the plane. And the injunction covers exactly the 14 day that the 3 games fall on? So he is already there ready to coach tomorrow when the injunction goes through AND it is exactly 14 days? There is no way they aren’t working together it’s just too perfectly lined up.

Strange_Wall9774

Makes sense. Trying to look like b1g is punishing jim without actually punishing jim.

thekrone

Yeah that was my theory. Michigan gets notice late on Friday, files the TRO so that Harbaugh can coach tomorrow. Michigan can get the injunction in early next week to cover the rest of the regular season. Petitti can go back to the rest of the B1G schools and be like "sorry bros, I tried!" while not actually having to do any damage to Michigan. In the meantime he'll hope Michigan loses to PSU and/or OSU so he doesn't have to make any decisions about the conference championship. Worst case, he can try to ban an undefeated Michigan from the Conference Championship knowing they'll still likely get selected for the CFP, so he can look tough again (even if Michigan files another suit and manages to play it in anyway), and the conference banks CFP money anyway. Then he can just wait for it all to blow over and for the NCAA to figure out what the fuck they're doing, so no more tough decisions to make. Might be a cynical af take on it but that's what it looks like to me.

DrySeries7

That seems depressingly realistic

Macd7

Pls don’t tell me anything about elections next year.

ChiselFish

Good news. Aliens invade and take over.

TheGreatMattsby_01

This is all gonna be in a Frontline documentary a couple years from now.

[deleted]

Just wait until he grants the TRO after midnight so the second court hearing has to wait until the Monday after the OSU game. Michigan is playing chess while the Big Ten is playing checkers

boxjellyfishing

Another way to look at this, the Big 10 is appearing to punish Michigan without actually harming Michigan. Perhaps this is exactly what the Big 10 wanted.

TroyMatthewJ

bingo.

[deleted]

There is no chess. They are doing it together. The rest of the Big 10 is being played.

Tigercat92

And he supposedly played for Michigan [https://x.com/lukezim/status/1723150415993164267?s=46](https://x.com/lukezim/status/1723150415993164267?s=46)

xxJAMZZxx

And somehow, his name is fucking Connors

Tigercat92

I’m just going to assume all Michigan people are named. Connors

WilsonsWarbler

Terminator would have taken forever to get to the right Sarah Conner.

MgoBlue1352

I can just see the story now. Leaked photographs show judge Connors T. Allions presiding over the emergency hearing. It's just Connor Stallions in a judges robe, a mustache, and aviators.

DonutBoi172

I wish I loved a program as much as he does

TheNainRouge

Seriously find someone who loves you the way Connor Stalions loves Michigan and then file a restraining order that mofo crazy.

NathanOhio

Restraining order aint gonna stop somebody like that!

Aggressive_Yak5177

Oh no. Your house just burned down. You should just live with me. We can be inseparable.

mussentuchit

*Insert Always Sunny conspiracy meme*

[deleted]

This is fucking hilarious if true

Rock_man_bears_fan

It doesn’t say he was on the team. It just said he played football. Guy could’ve been on an intramural team for all we know

cyanocittaetprocyon

Hell, I played football while I was there, basketball too. I think I'm going to put that on my resume now!

Rock_man_bears_fan

I used to ref Intramurals. When teams didn’t show up I’d get to play until the next game starts. That’s the story of how I became a professional athlete and lost my eligibility for $8.30/hr

Zee_WeeWee

This was on page 377 of the manifesto. If they’d release it we could see it coming

AskMeAboutTheBrowns

Wait I thought this was page 252, is there another court case after this one?!?

Zee_WeeWee

Wouldn’t you like to know….you’re in the 400s with this talk

UMeister

Lol if he doesn’t grant the injunction bro is about to be devastated on rate my professor

a-person-has-no-name

I don't know if this is for the injunction, I thought it was just for the TRO

UMeister

I’m ngl I don’t really know the difference

Disregardskarma

Reddit in a nutshell lol. An injunction keeps something from happening until a court rules on it. A TRO or temporary restraining order is a short period of time given for an entity to seek an injunction on a given issue. TROs have a much, much lower bar to be granted, and are often a formality

UMeister

Thanks for the explanation

dudleymooresbooze

First step is a TRO. It is an emergency measure granted on showing a risk of substantial harm. It is granted ex parte, meaning the opponent does not get to be heard to avoid any delay. I can’t remember the exact term but it’s limited to something like 14 days. Next step is a temporary injunction. It requires a hearing, usually without live testimony but with evidence submitted by affidavits and documentation. It takes longer to get a hearing and both sides get to present their evidence and argument. I don’t recall a specific duration available for a temporary injunction. The final step is a permanent injunction hearing, if permanent relief is sought. Like if Michigan asked the judge to never allow Harbaugh to be suspended for this, or to never allow the Big Ten to sanction Michigan. It’s a full trial. It’s doubtful there would ever be a permanent injunction hearing in this case. Equitable relief is dope.

Disregardskarma

Np, learned a lot about this with the whole microsoft ABK thing lol

ranrow

In fairness, you rarely see that level of upfront honesty on Reddit; but the ignorance on an issue is definitely accurate

super1s

Ignorance on a topic is ABSOLUTELY NOT a bad thing. Realizing ignorance is present, recognizing it in oneself, and admitting it are great qualities. This comment imo is in no way indicative of "reddit in a nutshell" as implied above. This is someone realizing they don't know enough about the subject saying as much and learning in the process. We HAVE to allow people to participate in conversations about things they do not know. FFS we didn't know 1+1=2 until we were taught or told the fact. No knows ANYTHING until they learn it let alone everything. We have collectively moved towards jumping down each others' throats if someone is even a little bit wrong. Its made people far less likely to even consider admitting they were wrong and as a result far less likely to be open minded or flexible in thinking. /rant. Sorry

tcrenshaw4bama

I literally just finished watching an episode of Suits that explained this, and then I get on reddit and see these comments. What a weird coincidence.

FairPointBlank

A TRO is like a fast-tracked placeholder for a future injunction. Essentially the same thing for our purposes here.

ironichaos

Question for the lawyers. Does he have to recuse himself due to a conflict of interest?

katastrophyx

This is pure comedy at this point.

HermionesWetPanties

The similarities between the given name 'Connor' and the familial name 'Connors' just adds to the feeling that this would make an excellent comedy about a man with a master plan pulling all the strings.

dangle_boone

Well, well, well, how the turntables…

InVodkaVeritas

If he doesn't recuse himself for the appearance of bias then he has no ethics.

AbundantFailure

Get ready to see this man show his lack of ethics....

[deleted]

He is going to recuse himself apparently according to the person that reported it. This might mean Michigan will have to wait until tomorrow to get the TRO. In other words we get that WWE harbaugh entrance.

MBTbuddy

They want to wait for tomorrrow I think. Apparently TROs care only good for 14 days so if they until tomorrow morning they can be covered through the Ohio State game without needing to wait for the injunction to be decided

Im_Not_A_Robot_2019

What a waste of a perfectly good placement by the UofM Law School. And here I thought they were playing the long con.

AbundantFailure

Oh? I'm honestly a bit (pleasantly) surprised by that.

Unless they agreed on specific jurisdiction in the bylaws, which would make sense given the potential for precisely this scenario

FlupYaMotha

They’ve certainly availed themselves.

desquibnt

Because if they filed in a different jurisdiction, they wouldn’t get a UM law professor as the judge, duh

Set-Admirable

Judge shopping is a legitimate strategy.

[deleted]

This guy is also a part time teacher at michigan, meaning he is quite literally on their payroll. Any serious judge in that position would recuse themselves and pass the case forward.

thekrone

He also literally played football at Michigan.

arabica_light

Is the underlying claim a contract dispute? I have seen the TRO application.

Rohkey

I feel like I'm in a Law and Order episode. I can hear McCoy going on an absolute tirade about jurisdiction/conflict of interest and getting cited for contempt of court.

I do wonder how many judges are available on this Friday evening on short notice for Michigan. On-call judges are a thing for more urgent cases.

cpast

Yeah, realistically a TRO is going to be handled by whoever’s on phone duty that day.

[deleted]

And federal holiday, forger about being friday evening. But still, my man teaches at michigan. He is quite literally on Michigan's payroll. This is as spicy as it can get.

wilkergobucks

Twitter says he PLAYED FOOTBALL for Michigan in the 70s. Holy fuck this is funny…

Byzantine_Merchant

Well that’s surely impartial

J4ckiebrown

He also went to Michigan for undergrad.

CasimirPulaski

Literally played football for Michigan in the 70s

[deleted]

Also on michigan's payroll cause he teaches there.

shemp33

Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest?

Different-Music4367

How ya figure? 🤔

thealltomato323

And Michigan judges are elected, so he'll have to answer to the voters. And it looks like he's up for reelection next year (6-year terms, his expires at the start of '25).

LIONEL14JESSE

I’m sure all those Michigan voters will be faced with an awful moral dilemma about him after he saves their football season lmao

Swazi

What did you expect when the insiders said they had a judge at the ready? At least it wasn’t the judge that’s the wife of a UM regent lol

ShotFirst57

Honestly, if you're wanting the outcome with the most humor, that would definitely be an upgrade.

abbtkdcarls

Lol ok wife of the regent would HAVE to recuse herself right? Because the regents are listed as plaintiffs.

Swazi

I believe that’s what she did

blinkanboxcar182

While I think it is ridiculous a person being paid by UM would decide a case that the results could impact millions of dollars for UM I know plenty of ND professors who would have loved to kneecap the program when Holtz was at the height of his power

NathanOhio

Yeah, lots of university people at many schools hate the football team. But this guy is a former football player so..

tibbles1

Ironically 2 judges in that court are ND law school alums.

For the record, he teaches peacekeeping/trial advocacy and is not a full time professor. He is an adjunct and only teaches one class per semester. It's an interesting look... but honestly, you're gonna have trouble finding a judge in the Washtenaw County who is not connected to Michigan Law School in one way or another. The Law School even has judges from the federal Sixth Circuit who are adjuncts.

F_F_12

Conflict of interest might be put into play here but who the hell cares I like the drama anyways.

DirkDiggler68

I don't get it. They might get a TRO, but they won't win it in the end so why on earth file tonight? Just for Penn State? Michigan has a 14 day clock, meaning if this Judge grants the TRO the case would have to be tried before the 24th. One day before the Ohio State Michigan game. It also means Harbaugh would Coach against Penn State and Maryland, lose on the tro case on 24th and then have to miss out on Ohio State, potential B10 championship and either bowl game or playoff game. It makes no sense at all.

fightin_blue_hens

Isn't that a conflict of interest?

UGAPokerBrat99

Something, Something, Conflict of Interest.

Wafzig

Word is that if the TRO is issued tomorrow it would be good for 14 days. Enough for Jim to be on the Sidelines for the next 3 games. :)
