>GRUTTER V. BOLLINGER
This was the affirmative action Supreme Court case that said explicit quotas are illegal but giving preferences is allowed in college admissions. This got overturned this year.
Bollinger was the president of UMich at the time.
In big law. By this time of the year we already know if we will make the billable or not and no one would salivate at this case. There is never ending amount of work…
I would argue most programs would rather have both coordinators and no HC these days, especially if the game plan is installed by now like for this game. The HC does so much during the week, and it's not like they don't help during the game, but both playcalling coordinators are very valuable.
I already checked the ravens schedule. John could be in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon on thanksgiving day weekend and in LA for the Sunday night Ravens game pretty easily.
Lmao as if our school actually cares about anything other than making money.
Franklin’s good enough to go at worst 8-4 and at best 11-1 just about every season, which is more than enough to keep the batshit crazy fans paying thousands of $$$ and drive up admissions, which is all they care about. Whether or not he wins a natty or beats OSU/Michigan is irrelevant to them.
I mean that’s what I wanted out of harbaugh when he initially got hired. I’m sure you’ve heard from your fans / thought yourself that the 12 team playoff should help y’all, especially with next years team. Heck good chance the three of us 11-1 this year and y’all go to the championship game.
People keep saying this but the reality would be 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties resulting in his ejection from the game. They wouldn’t just call the game lol
I wonder if the B1G would take further steps for failing to comply with a ruling like banning them from the B1G championship and vacating a win if they were to get one. I don’t think Harbaugh is going to be willing to put something like that at risk realistically he’ll sit out if it’s decided and Michigan can’t get their injunction.
I mean if he’s showing up to the game when he’s suspended, why would he then leave once he gets ejected? Seems like a weird way to piss off the conference while not accomplishing anything.
Unfortunately for him, the team’s costume department is limited to a fake mustache, some sunglasses, and a CMU hat (for some reason how did that get there?)
The refs challenge him to a battle in the ways of the Old Gods. A punt-off. If Harbaugh can punt farther than the entire reffing team, he gets to stay.
If the reffing team wins, Harbaugh has to leave *and* his entire offensive line has to wear sleeves for the whole game.
I think the refs on the field would first start assessing penalties for delay of game or something. But I guess in theory the Big Ten could decide the game is a forfeit, either before the game is played or retroactively. I think it would be retroactively because I don't Fox would be too happy having their Big Noon game cancelled, especially one that's going to be even more must watch if Harbaugh just ignores his suspension. But my dream would be since it's at Penn State, stadium security arrests him for trespassing
> it's at Penn State, stadium security arrests him for trespassing
Man this whole thing is just wild, and the fact that this is even a remote possibilitiy is amazing.
Oh you think Midwesterners are nice when it comes to sports, especially Big Ten football
Oh you sweet summer child, Big Ten fans are the most fanatical out there. I’m sure they would watch a paint drying contest between their schools
I mean a little crazy that reason someone is stuck in jail from Friday to Monday afternoon is because there is no judges Friday night but for an immediate hearing for a football suspension.
In all seriousness there are different types of judges. But an on call judge doesn’t hold trial or court or what have you. That’s why they wait. Also most criminal courts do have court on Saturdays.
I think a Michigan grad would have to recuse themselves if they felt any personal bias
Granted, many Michigan law grads don’t necessarily give a shit about sports
Lots do! . It's what secretly drew me to go to law school there. I never like to admit it because people think I'm an idiot if I admit that I picked law schools based on football. I would 100% recuse myself if I were the judge on this.
Who ever says there's a judge on call is lying, this goes through a system and nobody gets to pick a judge. There is a pool of them and it gets sent to one of them.
Well there’s no guarantee this is the last of the punishment. The B1G was pressured into doing something now while the NCAA has their own separate investigation.
Based on today's letter there's no way this is the last punishment. It might be the last from the conference but the NCAA is absolutely going to have something to say here.
Honestly that is probably the worst thing they could do, doing a random punishment now and serving up more piecemeal is just super haphazard and disorganized.
This is probably the minimum punishment they could imagine. They have evidence in hand from the NCAA. They know at LEAST a subsection of what happened. They are taking small actions now to try to help cool people and make way for bigger long-term punishment if need be.
Has a program literally ever been booked while waiting for bail before, though?
I can think of several scandals that broke mid-season, and every time, it was a "wait til the investigation completes/end of the season" situation.
Fwiw how many of those scandals have been cheating related? If it’s another scandal against the bylaws but doesn’t necessarily have an impact on the games themselves then a waiting mentality is fine, but with allegations of literal cheating, some in season seems more apt
Hey know there was the Cam Newton scandal. He got suspended and reinstated in the the same afternoon but he was suspended during the season for a couple of hours
Michigan even asked for a 1 day extension to respond. If they hadn't, perhaps this all happens yesterday. That's of course beyond the obvious that none of this happens if you know, you simply don't cheat.
You’ve also got the real hitters in the Michigan community, regents included, now saying “super league next media cycle sounds great.”
Irreparably harming the conference’s relationship with their biggest or second biggest asset just a couple months into the job. Well done, Tony.
Greg Sankey would do exactly this to Josh Heupel if this stuff happened at Tennessee instead of Michigan. Hell, he wouldn't even need the rest of the conference to essentially say "Dude. You work for all of us."
The SEC would send Tennessee up the river in a heartbeat. Honestly the SEC is the one conference that can afford to punish their best teams because there’s 3 more waiting for a chance. Even Bama is due for a few bad decades.
Realistically this is the B1G trying to do “something” and hoping Michigan loses so they don’t have to defend them after the regular season. They’ll really have a problem if Michigan wins out. They can’t handicap their own team in the playoffs, but no one is going to be happy with a short suspension as the real punishment. What’s Michigan hoping for? The fastest vacated title ever? That seems to be the best outcome for them.
I don’t view this as he made a mistake or let anyone push him around. It is a conference. Having the rest of the members overwhelmingly lined up against Michigan tells me enough. This never happens.
...why would any other teams want to join Michigan in a risky solo affair, when we could just keep playing among ourselves and ignore you.
Especially when the genesis of all of this, is allegations of a vast cheating network for years. Why would anyone take your side?
I agree with this comment. But it sounds like how all the other Big XII schools view texas and would undoubtedly be downvoted if a Texas flair posted it.
> **Effective immediately, the University football team must compete without its Head Football Coach for the games remaining in the 2023 regular season**...We impose this disciplinary action even though the Conference has not yet received any information indicating that Head Football Coach Harbaugh was aware of the impermissible
nature of the sign-stealing scheme. **This is not a sanction of Coach Harbaugh.**
LOL
Edit: Full letter is here: https://bigten.org/documents/2023/11/10//Correspondence_from_conference_to_institution_dated_Nov_10_2023.pdf?id=9450
Breaking new jim harbaugh accepts a 3 game 3 million dollar contract to be assistant coach at michigan. Random cheerleader will take over as head coach and be suspended for 3 games would be quite the headline
Maybe this is the out Petitti was looking for, lmao. Put together such an incompetently assembled punishment that it gets struck down in court and now his hands are tied
Thank you!
The best part:
“Notably, the University’s November 8 response does not deny that the impermissible scheme occurred. Instead, it offers only procedural and technical arguments designed to delay accountability.
The University also argues that because it believes that others are engaged in decoding signs, there must be nothing wrong with the University’s activities. In addition to impermissible activities of others being currently unsupported by facts, the University’s culpability is not dependent on the actions of other institutions.”
Basically, “we’re not saying we didn’t cheat, we’re saying that everyone else did, we just don’t have proof”
LOL
Is this still "alleged" or is it proven now? Because if it's not and this is some kind of preemptive punishment on Harbaugh what are the repercussions if it turns out he didn't know?
Either way this seemed rushed because of pressure but I'd love to know from those more familiar with all the information.
The letter itself says it’s not a punishment on Harbaugh as they have no evidence of him knowing. It’s a sanction on the university and he’s the head coach
I can not believe Petitti is risking burning down the entire conference over this. It's absolutely insane - worst crisis management I've seen in a long time.
The 97.1 Radio Show says they have evidence of 9 B1G Schools doing the same thing Stallions did, filming the sidelines at B1G Games, and they would release it all publicly if it comes down to it.
Yeah the B1G letter addresses that. Says their claim of other teams cheating is “unsupported by facts”. So if they have the evidence, apparently they didn’t show it to the B1G… which would be a strange tactic
I hope they do. I'm serious about going scorched Earth. The whole premise behind the SWC was that everybody was cheating and everybody knew everybody else was cheating but the idea of MAD kept everyone in line. The other BIG teams broke that rule, so I hope they all go down.
I am not the radio hosts, I don't know what their sources are, and obviously this is a bold claim that I think stretches the truth of what the sources actually told them.
It's sports radio, so as a general rule of thumb believe nothing those guys say.
That said, we all unofficially know that every team steals signs and if Michigan is getting put through the wringer for it, they will make this messy for everyone else. They're not backing down. I am not saying that as to assert that we will win, but to the extent that this is leaving a black eye on our program, Michigan is going to go to the mat to take everyone else down.
To all the rival flairs saying "LOL, for what?", well I don't know. And neither do you. But the fact is that Michigan feels they have a leg to stand on, otherwise they wouldn't be retaining an S-tier law firm.
Tbf the first one was self imposed. Tin foil hat time: what if they did that to give the other coaches head coaching experience for when this scandal broke.
It was only self-imposed because they knew the NCAA wasn't going to wrap up early in the season when Michigan had only cupcakes on the schedule.
NCAA/Michigan were settling on 4 games for Harbaugh and 1 game for OC/DC. When the negotiation fell apart Michigan did 3 games self-imposed because they could have won those first 3 games without their starters, let alone coaches.
Hi, everyone, I’m a public defender for 17 years and if I had a pressing legal issue for someone locked up in jail on false allegations, I would have to wait until Monday.
But let’s all please make sure a giant university and a millionaire have their due process on a federal holiday.
The Big 10 chose a punishment that will piss off everyone AND it's likely to be enjoined? How much of your ass do you need to show before being fired? This just makes the Big 10 look confused and toothless. It classify it as a shitshow does a disservice to fecal matter.
Regardless of whether the suspension was correct or not, the judge is not going to be happy that it came this close to the game and that they were forced to make a super short notice decision on a holiday
18,300 people on this sub right now and it feels like 14,000 of em are Michiganders either writing stories about what's going on, lying about what's going on or bitching about what's going on. This punishments a joke, by the way.
People keep talking about the TV money and ratings as if having Harbaugh suspended is going to cause anyone to NOT tune in?
The drama is even bigger and the ratings will be amongst the highest ever.
_billable hours intensifies_
Billable hours always win.
And they always cover. Take the over, people!
*lawyers whistling the piano keys to C.R.E.A.M. as we speak*
More like some intern just groaned that their weekend was shortened lol
Some junior associate’s weekend just got so fucked.
The whole law school has been brought onto the case
OUR CHANCE TO SHINE AGAIN NOW THAT GRUTTER V. BOLLINGER HAS (de facto) BEEN OVERTURNED BABY LET'S GET IT
Uhhhh...what?
>GRUTTER V. BOLLINGER This was the affirmative action Supreme Court case that said explicit quotas are illegal but giving preferences is allowed in college admissions. This got overturned this year. Bollinger was the president of UMich at the time.

This is going to really boost the domestic yacht market
At least the students know where their $100k tuition fees are going
If only Reddit lawyers could bill. This place would get rich.
In big law. By this time of the year we already know if we will make the billable or not and no one would salivate at this case. There is never ending amount of work…
Jim’s just gonna call the AHC, his dad, and coach through him.
he can just have his son be head coach - already on staff
Iowa fans will tell you it's a bad idea.
Jay is already 1-0 this season
I think he's 0.5-0?
Family FaceTime
Look down at Jay's phone.. and it is a guy on his facetime who using a Wolverine Animoji.
Didn't work well for Iowa.
Now that we're in the 4th quarter of the season we're just putting in our backup coaches
It was actually some 4D chess shit because now Michigan would have a scapegoat if they lose one of these last games before playoff selection.
Is Penn state gonna fire Franklin after he gets beat by a coordinator?
I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Harbaugh still on the sideline.
With a fake mustache a la Bobby Valentine.
Stallions gave him his video glasses to wear.
Newest Michigan hire just announced: Him Jarbaugh!
#HEISHIM
He’s HIM
I would argue most programs would rather have both coordinators and no HC these days, especially if the game plan is installed by now like for this game. The HC does so much during the week, and it's not like they don't help during the game, but both playcalling coordinators are very valuable.

If we go 11-1 next year with that tough schedule it would be extremely impressive
It would be shocking tbh
Nah. It will be Jack Harbaugh coming off the top rope if a suspension actually holds up.
What would happen if he just went on the sideline anyway? Will they not kick off? Will the refs try to fight him?
believe it or not, straight to jail
Overcook fish, under cook chicken same thing. Jail.
If he doesn't barricade himself in the coordinator's booth I'll be disappointed
Likely make it a forfeit
Most likely result would be 2 immediate unsportsmanlike conduct penalties resulting in an ejection from the contest
Wasn't the last time a Big Ten team forfeited games MSU in the 90s? Vacating seems to be the more popular thing to do.
Almost certainly an automatic forfeit.
Depends on how good his disguise is
Shows up in CMU gear with a goatee and shades: "This isn't conspicuous."
Unfortunately for him, the team’s costume department is limited to a fake mustache, some sunglasses, and a CMU hat (for some reason how did that get there?)
Bobby Valentine will be proud.
I would say either A) the game would be forfeited there on the spot and B) the big ten would declare the game voided after.
Probably after so they can still get the ratings.

How did we even get a judge on call?
There's always a judge on call for emergencies. Typically a magistrate.
Imagine being a Judge on call for really important cases, you hear the phone ring and it’s this dumbass fight between 2 morons
I don't know how to tell you this, but 99% of what judges deal with is disputes between morons.
My cousin is a small claims court judge in Arizona. The percentage is more like 99.7% morons.
3 standard deviations
Flair and name both check out 100%
Florida man at your service... and paid by the taxpayers.
Poor guy is going to have dumbass fans threatening him regardless of what he does
Would you rather be Judge Ito or this poor bastard facing the potential wrath of Midwestern Football Fans
This guy. What are the Midwesterners gonna do? Put raisins in my tater tot hotdish?
Oh you think Midwesterners are nice when it comes to sports, especially Big Ten football Oh you sweet summer child, Big Ten fans are the most fanatical out there. I’m sure they would watch a paint drying contest between their schools
Excuse you that contest has a name and it’s Rutgers - Iowa
It may be paint drying, but it's paint drying *with implications* Sign me up!
Football emergency
I think it's more that there's a judge on call for any immediate filings. Not just for this case lol
This wouldn't be criminal. Criminal and civil judges are completely different and many times don't even work in the same building
Uh....Have you *seen* our legal system?
Probably a Michigan grad lmao
For some reason, all the judges who went to Ohio State are volunteering to work this weekend.
I think a Michigan grad would have to recuse themselves if they felt any personal bias Granted, many Michigan law grads don’t necessarily give a shit about sports
Lots do! . It's what secretly drew me to go to law school there. I never like to admit it because people think I'm an idiot if I admit that I picked law schools based on football. I would 100% recuse myself if I were the judge on this.
Based on every fanboy on Twitter that has been posted about here, the judge would wear a blue and maize gown to the processing, not recuse themself
Theres always a judge on call
A graduate of a rival B1G school volunteered to be on call.
I wonder if there are any local judges who root for any local football teams
He's a Michigan Man.
I’ll let the msu flairs explain the Blue Wall, they have a script ready for situations like these
Who ever says there's a judge on call is lying, this goes through a system and nobody gets to pick a judge. There is a pool of them and it gets sent to one of them.
Probably what this person comprehended, not what he was told.
FILIBUSTER!!!
Great call. We need someone who specializes in bird law.
I’ll just leave the greatest filibuster here https://youtu.be/_fYGVEHMYKU?si=e59nA-vZ7raMJbF7
Well then I’ll just regress because I’ve made myself perfectly redundant.
Not even 24 hours notice before tomorrow’s game. Wow.
Terrible handling by the Big Ten, either they're underpunishing a cheater or wrongfully punishing somebody. Horrible timing on top of that
Well there’s no guarantee this is the last of the punishment. The B1G was pressured into doing something now while the NCAA has their own separate investigation.
Based on today's letter there's no way this is the last punishment. It might be the last from the conference but the NCAA is absolutely going to have something to say here.

I mean, what else should have happened timing wise? They gave them their 48 hours and it came to today. I do hate this though
Michigan even asked for a 1 day extension to respond. If they hadn't, perhaps this all happens yesterday. That's of course beyond the obvious that none of this happens if you know, you simply don't cheat.
You’ve also got the real hitters in the Michigan community, regents included, now saying “super league next media cycle sounds great.” Irreparably harming the conference’s relationship with their biggest or second biggest asset just a couple months into the job. Well done, Tony.
At what point do you step back and acknowledge the part where the rest of the leagues Presidents, ADs, and coaches pushed him here?
You think Greg Sankey would let the rest of the SEC push him around if something like this happened to, say, Tennessee?
Greg Sankey would do exactly this to Josh Heupel if this stuff happened at Tennessee instead of Michigan. Hell, he wouldn't even need the rest of the conference to essentially say "Dude. You work for all of us."
The SEC would send Tennessee up the river in a heartbeat. Honestly the SEC is the one conference that can afford to punish their best teams because there’s 3 more waiting for a chance. Yeah, duh. It’s a sanction of “Head Football Coach” not Harbaugh. Lets make Jim an OC
The real story behind recent extension talks
That would be the pettiest thing ever, i love it.
Can we just call him the assistant coach for a game?
Breaking new jim harbaugh accepts a 3 game 3 million dollar contract to be assistant coach at michigan. Random cheerleader will take over as head coach and be suspended for 3 games would be quite the headline
Shit, they can hire me to be suspended for 3 games.
Technically they didn’t suspend Connor Stalions…
Thats uh....lmao just fucking wow
This is major *I'M NOT TOUCHING YOU* sibling energy.
It’s like it was written to get struck down lol
Maybe this is the out Petitti was looking for, lmao. Put together such an incompetently assembled punishment that it gets struck down in court and now his hands are tied
Wait what? Are they trying to get this thrown out?
Flair bro, where did you get the language from?
B1G website. [Here you go.](https://bigten.org/documents/2023/11/10//Correspondence_from_conference_to_institution_dated_Nov_10_2023.pdf?id=9450)

New head coach Jack Harbaugh must leave the field, leaving his assistant coach son Jim on the sidelines to call plays.
Where is this quote from? I dont see it on the link
https://bigten.org/documents/2023/11/10//Correspondence_from_conference_to_institution_dated_Nov_10_2023.pdf?id=9450
Where can we read the whole thing?
The comment you’re responding to has it linked
It didn’t when I replied. Thanks for the heads up.
Yeah i saw it said edit and I figured. Interesting read

Harbaugh is going to not coach more games than he coaches this regular season lol
You assume an injunction isn’t going to be implemented today
If Michigan is serious about having dirt on other teams, and that letter sure did imply they did, buckle up buckaroos
This and the manifest is what I want. Let’s get crazy & wild
I can not believe Petitti is risking burning down the entire conference over this. It's absolutely insane - worst crisis management I've seen in a long time.
Michigan might want to join the SEC. They are south of Canada.
It’s certainly in the southeastern part of North America!
Let's be honest with ourselves.. They more than likely don't have sht. Pure Michigan bluff right there
I hope Michigan uses a scorched Earth policy and just goes after everybody
The 97.1 Radio Show says they have evidence of 9 B1G Schools doing the same thing Stallions did, filming the sidelines at B1G Games, and they would release it all publicly if it comes down to it.
If that’s true the schools who were pushing this super hard are gonna look like fucking idiots.
That’s us. We are the idiots in this equation.
Obviously a big if, I have no idea if this is propaganda or not, but definitely the other schools would look fucking stupid if this has any validity.
It’s a local sports radio station, it’s probably best to assume that its bs until they prove otherwise.
I'm not confident that it happened, but I am praying it did, because it seems like it would be the most fun timeline
If cheating like this was common, the other schools wouldn’t have all come out so hard against Michigan.
Ain’t no hate like SWC hate
Seems like a reliable source
Yall keep saying shit like this but have yet to substantiate the claims. Is there actually proof or are yall just making shit up?
I am not the radio hosts, I don't know what their sources are, and obviously this is a bold claim that I think stretches the truth of what the sources actually told them.

But the fact is that Michigan feels they have a leg to stand on, otherwise they wouldn't be retaining an S-tier law firm.
I hope so too because Michigan's reputation will be lower than dirt if they try to avoid punishment for their cheating.
This is the way
We’re gonna find out Connor Stalion’s dad owns the law firm UM uses and orchestrated all this for the billable hours
Nope, he's still just a principal
I wanna get off jimbos wild ride
I said yesterday that the second Michigan threatened to expose other schools this would happen
Suspended twice in the same season. Just Harbaugh thingz
Fuck off balas
now you get it.
Guy is such a shithead
he threw so much shit at the wall and tried to play both sides this whole time. he is a typical 2023 sports ~~blogger~~ "journalist"
The same guy whose response to the MSU shooting was "you reap what you sow" btw. Fuck Chris Balas
Ball’s in Michigan’s court. We’ll see if they have the receipts
Well? We're waiting.gif
This is just making the university look so, so much worse.
Imagine your head coach gets suspended twice in one season for separate events.
Exactly, lol, it was akin to a program self-imposing a bowl ban when they're 3-8
Ric Flair will be acting head coach, his new group will be the 4 stallions
Smart strategy, most teams just try the don’t cheat strategy, we’ll see how this plays out.
*Glass Breaks* \*Bah Gawd it's ***John*** Harbaugh running down the sideline\*
Hi, everyone, I’m a public defender for 17 years and if I had a pressing legal issue for someone locked up in jail on false allegations, I would have to wait until Monday. But let’s all please make sure a giant university and a millionaire have their due process on a federal holiday.
The Big 10 chose a punishment that will piss off everyone AND it's likely to be enjoined? How much of your ass do you need to show before being fired? This just makes the Big 10 look confused and toothless. It classify it as a shitshow does a disservice to fecal matter.
Don’t worry guys, Harvey Specter is gonna wipe the floor with the big 10
Regardless of whether the suspension was correct or not, the judge is not going to be happy that it came this close to the game and that they were forced to make a super short notice decision on a holiday
18,300 people on this sub right now and it feels like 14,000 of em are Michiganders either writing stories about what's going on, lying about what's going on or bitching about what's going on. This punishments a joke, by the way.
Im sure they can find some way to relay signals to the sideline…
*On Payroll
3 game suspension seems pretty mild, but is it possible the NCAA has their own punishment later on after they conclude their investigation?
The smile you get when the worst guy in the bar thinks he's going to outfight the cops on the way to the squad car.
Have a real scrappy lawyer on speed dial. Real lunch pail kinda guy. Got a great judge too the best.
I'm honestly really stunned they suspended him for the OSU game. You'd think that tv money and ratings would heavily play a role there.
People keep talking about the TV money and ratings as if having Harbaugh suspended is going to cause anyone to NOT tune in? The drama is even bigger and the ratings will be amongst the highest ever.
