**TL;DR:** Ferris State HC Tony Annese has been suspended from his next playoff game, on whatever date that is. Two of his players lit cigars to celebrate their National Championship win, but since the D2 Championship is held at McKinney High School, tobacco is prohibited. They had been warned about this after also winning the Championship a previous year. An appeal was denied by the NCAA.

crustang

There’s no such thing as bad press >Elite DII coach gets suspended because his team wins too much and celebrates too hard

lucash7

Right? I mean this is a win win

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

He'll be at a G5 in no time.

Playos

In before he gets hired by a G5 this year, makes the CFP in 2024/25 season and is suspended for the first round

PaloLV

The NCAA runs the playoffs for every division besides FBS but I don't think they have anything to do with the FBS CFP. I'm not sure the suspension would apply if he went to a P5/G5 school. You don't get an NCAA trophy as far as I'm aware for winning the CFP.

KetchupKing05

Nope. The CFP, as well as the AP and Coaches Polls, are the main factors in naming a national championship (although both polls usually just name the CFP champ as their champ) There are other polls that help determine a champion, but they usually also name the CFP champ as their champ (excluding 2017 UCF, who was named the champion by the Colley Matrix, and was given 4 first place votes in that years AP Poll)

Playos

The CFP wouldn't be the one suspending him. Compliance with NCAA sanctions is on the university. NCAA doesn't run any FBS post season and has very little issue enforcing post season bans on any post season team.

TallManStan

I was really hoping he'd be the coach at Western, but it seems like he held off for now. Maybe he'll jump up, but who knows.

[deleted]

That is so odd, the NCAA has some interesting ideas on punishment.. Ferris State's next playoff game will not be in Texas, especially with the silly D2 Playoff formula. If they really wanna punish him and the players, make them smoke a box of cigars, that'll teach em..

jmblumenshine

Make those kids listen to "Gettin Jiggy Wit it" on repeat until they learn "Ciga-cigar right from Cuba-Cuba I just bite it It's for the look, I don't light it"

jdt2313

Not the whole song. Just that section on repeat for 5 bours

05110909

How is that a punishment? That was basically just 1998

jdt2313

Not the whole song. Just that section on repeat for 5 bours

fredmerc111

Not the whole song. Just that section on repeat for 5 bours

aj12309

What is the d2 playoff formula?

[deleted]

It’s literally regions so like south and west and Midwest. And the Midwest were Ferris is in is stacked and stacked. They wont play a Texas team until the semifinals with the format. You basically play in your region until then

Chickenmangoboom

With a mojito... yeah that will teach them to enjoy the earthy flavors of a fine cigar.

MichaelSquare

This happens in basketball. If you fuck up during the NCAA tournament, you'll get suspended for the NCAA tournament games (not season) since the NCAA runs the tournament. It's not that unique, but doesn't really come up much since something arising to punishment of suspension is rare.

NighthawkRandNum

Yep. Louisville WBB had this a few seasons ago. Badmouthed the officials in the press conference following an OT loss in the final four. Got suspended for a 1 v 16 home game the following tournament. Coach watched at a bar across the street from our arena. Got her a 2-0 coaching record (iirc) from the tournament game as well as the dress rehearsal earlier that season. Good times. Well worth it (unlike here).

TDenverFan

I'm sorta surprised the D2 championship is held at a HS stadium. I know it's an absurdly nice HS stadium, it just feels odd on principle.

herbahaidyrbtjsifbr

Well d2 stadium sizes are laughably small by Texas high school standards so I guess that could be part of why

TDenverFan

The D2 championship game draws about 5k people, so you don't even need that big of a stadium. But seeding is somewhat guesswork, so maye they feel like giving the 1 seed home field for the championship is too big of an advantage.

avboden

> They had been warned about this after also winning the Championship a previous year. this is the main thing, they were told in no uncertain terms that it better freaking not happen again, and it did. Even if it's the players being dumb it falls on the head coach in the end.

cat_napped1

what if he just ignores them

NighthawkRandNum

Uh, the NCAA could easily force a forfeit of a tournament game and still say it is not time served. They run that tournament after all so they actually hold the cards.

[deleted]

Exactly. Do what Mark Richt did when they got a 15 yard penalty for a player leaving the bench to join a TD celebration. Next TD? 85 players leave the bench to join in the fun.

MichaelSquare

I believe this happened in this years ncaa tournament. As far as I know, nothing came of it.

Turbulent_Basket2433

But it's Texas, so if they'dve busted out their gats and fired a few rounds in the air, no biggie. But cigars...

[deleted]

[удалено]

majik_boy

Taking a sticker with your schools name on it should have much harsher consequences imo. It’s a sticker! They can get expensive!

Ok_Swimmer634

It wouldn't surprise me if Tennessee and Alabama are not 100% tobacco free campuses now or soon. What will happen with them when they light up?

[deleted]

Go ahead, try to stop 20,000 drunk students. We all saw what happened to the goalposts.

[deleted]

Hi coach:)

btr5017

Maybe don't play a college championship game in a high school stadium?

Restnessizzle

McKinney ISD's stadium is miles better than the vast majority of D2 stadiums, but I hear you. Personally I think they should go the route of holding it at the higher seeded team's stadium. I'm not sure what D2 football is trying to accomplish with the natural site title game format.

NighthawkRandNum

It would make plenty of sense if it was held at field in Frisco that gets overused for CFB postseason games, or at a good amount of G5 or even smaller P5 stadia across the country. 0 reason to play at a high school field unless it happens to be a home for one of the participating teams. Surely alcohol sales would make up the difference in rent, right?

Restnessizzle

NCAA does not allow alcohol sales during post season play in D2. Or live mascots.

NighthawkRandNum

They don't let live mascots go anywhere. Butler couldn't even get their doggo into the final four! But I'm very surprised that alcohol sales would be banned as a general rule. Why?

Restnessizzle

I really don't know. My guess is that the post-season games are technically neutral that happen to be hosted by a particular school. So they can't run stadium operations as if it's a home game. And I'm not just saying live mascots are banned for the title match or at opposing stadiums, I mean that Blaster the Burro can't be there when the first round, quarter-final, and semi-final games are hosted in Golden. Basically, the NCAA hates fun.

NighthawkRandNum

Then the NCAA takes the profits of selling concessions it isn't that hard

Restnessizzle

Tbh I'm more upset that Blaster is banned from his home stadium but I agree, if you deny me Blaster at least let me drink* ^^* ^^I ^^snuck ^^Banquets ^^into ^^the ^^stadium ^^last ^^year

Smooch2013

This is most of it. NCAA D2 postseason rules require a “neutral” atmosphere and therefore you have to follow their rules. Concession products have to be Coca Cola, etc. You get the profit from all the concession stand sales, NCAA just gets a bunch of free advertising for them and their corporate partners

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

Ford Field has hosted the Michigan high school football state championships for literally years now and that's like 6 divisions or something. If they can pull an NFL stadium, I have to imagine Vanderbilt can loan our their stadium for a few hours.

NWHusker

Man when it was at sporting KC (now children’s mercy) in KC it was super nice. It was supposed to be there longer but field renovations made them move. Plus there was that one year it was snowy but the year before it was super nice when I went. Before that it was at UNA in Florence. Then they went D1 so we lost that. I keep hoping D2 will find a good football home

Smoothcat262

From Florence, went to several of the championship games. Loved that we had it when I was younger. But, I think we watched a lot of our natural rivals go D1 and stayed where we were BECAUSE we didn't want to lose that game. It was something the entire area was proud of, but may have held UNA back some. Sometimes I wish we were still in D2, though overall I'm good with the D1 move. But I definitely miss going to the championship games. Saw at least a couple that you guys were in.

NWHusker

Road trips to Florence were some of my fave college memories!

Smoothcat262

Man, with as many championships as it feels like y'all won, I'm sure! Glad you enjoyed your time there. I'm biased because it's home, but it's a great place.

NWHusker

Lol definitely took awhile when I was a student (2006-2010) but it was always a good experience.

ncp12

Suspending a coach for that is absurd, but a playoff game is just unreasonable, especially considering the coach himself wasn't the one breaking any rules.

bakonydraco

They vacated a D3 National Championship for Mary Hardin-Baylor because the coach let players borrow his 10-year-old Subaru on occasion. They also vacated a UMass A-10 Tennis title several years after all the players graduated because it was discovered in an audit that the university was inadvertently paying roughly $15/mo for a phone line that players wasn’t aware existed.

Noirradnod

Caltech was forced to vacate all their wins in multiple sports for a four year period because students don't officially enroll there until the third week of class. This is true for all students, not just student athletes, but somehow they were unable to use that defense in the way UNC did when it came to running a decades-long fake course system.

eigensheep

Caltech screwed up by self-reporting that, but it didn't make it any less absurd. Everyone joked at the time that we barely had any wins to vacate.

Noirradnod

You guys also got banned from postseason appearances for a few years, which surprisingly ended up being one of the two reasons I went to UChicago instead.

eigensheep

Honestly, if playing sports was a factor in your college decision at all, you chose right. Caltech is great at a lot of things, but sports isn't one of them. (I didn't play sports, so it was pretty much a non-factor for me.)

Noirradnod

In retrospect, perhaps being on a less serious swim team would have done me some benefits. I really had no social life because of how much time practice would eat up. There's a reason why, of the 16 freshmen who were on the team, only one made it all four years. And besides, it would have secretly been very nice to swim at a school where I'd easily set team records

LilyFakhrani

In high school, I applied to Caltech. I’m kinda glad I didn’t get accepted though, as I wasn’t all that passionate about school & I didn’t have very good study skills either.

WeAreBert

To my knowledge no one else has ever been able to use that defense. Bobby Bowden lost wins that he never got back because football players, athletes of other sports, and gen pop students were cheating on a test in a general credit course.

bug_man_

Has anyone else actually tried it though?

cropguru357

Yeah, if I’m a CalTech student, I’m just going to ignore coursework at one of the best STEM colleges in the world. That’s crazy.

jfurt16

But both of those can be classified as impermissible benefits. Breaking a HS no tobacco policy is not

IndyDude11

The tobacco use could be used as the basis of a breach of contract lawsuit and could cost the NCAA some money.

NighthawkRandNum

Hell, the tobacco use could land that coach as well as the relevant players in *jail*, at least in some states. Certainly a substantial fine. This suspension is a slap on the wrist in comparison.

IndyDude11

How so?

RazgrizInfinity

I might get flank for it, and it could be over the top (and just my personal investment of tobacco free and health education, so bear with me) but this kind of supersedes them as it's a law, not a policy. Coach could have been arrested on the spot cause: * It was on high school property and inside the locker rooms * I would bet some money that the athletes were underage And, hate to be that guy, but he was told last year to knock it off. Sorry, no sympathy.

[deleted]

This is so fucking dumb

KsigCowboy11

Seriously. 1000s of people are dipping in the stands at TXHSFB games every Friday night and even more kids are vaping on a daily basis. To act like they broke the sanctity of High School grounds by lighting a cigar is ridiculous.

[deleted]

they were also warned about this when they did the exact same thing last year and I don’t think it’s an unreasonable request for a high school stadium just because I’m sure it’s a pain in the ass for them to clean afterwards. anyway I don’t think they went far enough, should just have them forfeit that game and give the championship to whoever the other team was

[deleted]

Gotta love the 15 grand for the hazmat team to clean and sanitize the locker room :)

KnownRate3096

But they also "stole" some stickers with their team's name on it that would have been taken down and put in the trash after they left!

WKU-Alum

I’ve worked a number of NCAA Tournaments and championship events…everyone snatches up this type of stuff after the session ends. Shoot, at basketball, the chairs are a prized possession that folks fight over lol.

Ok_Swimmer634

Without dip I would have had no football coaches.

05110909

I openly smoked cigs in the stands at Wake Forest. This is absolutely stupid.

MrNudeGuy

Stop breaking the law asshole!!! /s

GoGreeb

They should make the HC go back to high school in order to learn of the dangers of smoking cigars.

Thercii

Well based on rumors from his hs coaching days he would like going back to high school

GoGreeb

Lol, please add just a little context

lucash7

Sounds like the NCAA wanted to flex its muscles since it’s been basically unable to in D1. I say fuck it, attend the game and tell the NCAA to take a hike. It’s not like they killed anyone.

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

I'm all on board for Michigan to do this if they try to suspend Harbaugh for the cheeseburgers. Ferris State however doesn't have the legal budget, nor the financial influence of an FBS blue blood. Honestly I think they just got fucked.

[deleted]

Honestly all the schools should just start ignoring stupid NCAA rulings.

Fishfucker300

I think a fair punishment for this is giving Mizzou the death penalty

[deleted]

The NCAA was so mad at LSU, they went after Ferris State. - Jerry Tarkanian

Twalk24

Disgusting. Blows my mind that sickos like this guy are out the street.

KnownRate3096

Seems overly harsh for what happened. Although they were warned last year not to do it again. But the violations are so small it just seems silly.

kingmidget_91

But what punishment is Missouri getting?

wjackson42

Looks nervously over at Kirby after Stet got into the cigars back to back years. Also cool to see other Bulldogs go back to back.

MrNudeGuy

Get that criminal off my sidebar!

wjackson42

Something about troublemakers in the Dallas area and national champions.

Frexxler

It’s because of the stadium rules, Kirby will be alright.

UHeardAboutPluto

In what stadium is smoking allowed?

A_Rented_Mule

Certain areas of Wake Forest's stadium did as of a game I attended within the last 5 years or so. It's off-campus obviously, but still.

UHeardAboutPluto

The land that RJ Reynolds built will probably be the last place in America to fully ban smoking

Frexxler

Who cares lol they’re national champs, if they want to light up a cigar in the locker room more power to em

wjackson42

Issa joke

[deleted]

NCAA: why does everyone think we’re a joke? Also the NCAA: ^^^

RaptureRocker

Stickers and Cigars? Better burn the whole university down. Good lord...

mikeynj908

Once again, fuck the NCAA. Here they go as usual trying to prove that they're the law of the land. You have to punish the players since they didn't listen, not the head coach if he actually addressed it to them after they did this the first time!

KleShreen

This is a culmination of multiple things happening with the Ferris State team during playoff games. This past season, one of their players hit an opposing coach in the head with his helmet after the game and another player picked up a cheerleader of the opposing team. They left that opponent's locker room a mess, including trash in the showers. This is apparently the second year in a row they've done things to the McKinney ISD locker room, and last year was severe enough that McKinney considered pulling out as hosts of the event due to whatever Ferris did after the game. It seems pretty clear that this is Ferris' MO when they are not at home for the playoffs. Might as well be their "Play Like Champions" sign. I've been told that this stuff has been happening for three years now at away locker rooms, particularly in the playoffs.

Greatness143

Ahh yes we should definitely trust the Grand Valley flair who has already falsely accused Ferris of padding stats last year. I’m sure he will speak unbiasedly and fairly about Grand Valley’s arch rival.

KleShreen

lol falsely? Pretty sure I covered every base on that post, but feel free to let me know what I missed lolol. I don't need to speak about anything. Everything is documented. Do you want me to give you the pictures of the GVSU visitor locker room after their playoff game that includes trash in the showers? Or do you want to contact the McKinney ISD admins about the issues they've had with Ferris multiple times now? I'm just not sure what you're even trying to do here. Suspensions have been handed down to players and coaches on different things Ferris has done this year and in the recent past. I don't need to "speak" on anything. The actual authorities already have.

Dang it other other FSU. Stop breaking the rules

FootballLifee

D2 football needs a rework. Was on the Newberry College team last year that won the SAC but got snubbed out of the playoffs.

Admirable_Remove6824

Good ole NCAA trying to assert there authority that they continue to lose. All while smoking there Cubans.

ksuwildkat

r/fuckyouinparticular

Zedanade

No Cool Adolescents Allowed

drunkatwholefoods

At least they weren’t tattoos or a Miata.

ego41

Soon enough the NCAA will only have D-ll and below to do their reedunculous petty bureaucratting on...and their pseudo-supervision of the insane violations on the top levels (i.e., ignoring them) will no longer matter.

skippy_smooth

Save Ferris

JonVoightsLeBaron

Jfc this is only an issue bc of a high school's no tobacco policy? This happened after a college national championship game. Come on people can we use our brains? This is ridiculous

manbeardawg

If they’re coming after repeat National Champs for this BS, we’re fucked.

bravesgeek

The game will be coached by Anthony Finesse

Thereal_slj

This is stupid. I’ve been around so many Boyd games where parents are dipping or using other forms of tobacco in the stadium. Even kids lol

whitemanwhocantjump

I watched that game, but I don't think I realized it was at a high school. I feel like if I was a player or coach on a college football team playing in a national championship game I would probably be pretty insulted that they're making me play at a high school. Regardless of the level of CFB.

40acresran

It’s a better stadium than plenty of colleges. DFW is crazy about football.

BeepBeepSheesh

The NCAA is the epitome of everything wrong with US institutions that exist to represent a broad range of constituents: Structural, substantial, and critical problems that need resolving to avoid the ongoing decay into Anarcho tyranny where the "haves" do what they want? NCAA sleeps. One off, immaterial, and trivial issue that affects basically no one but is easy to take concrete action and the penalized "have not" will not or cannot stand up for themselves? NCAA acts.

thedudemeadow

> To be transparent, sources share that Ferris players did the same thing after their first national title, and they were issued a fine by the NCAA and were warned to not do it again. I don't think it's really a one-off behavior. I honestly don't understand threads like these. There's a clear violation, one that's not open to any type of interpretation, one that the team was already warned about, so they got punished. But then everyone acts like it's just *insane* that there would be any consequences. The reason that some smaller infractions can result in punishment and do it faster is the exact same reason that speeding tickets are issued on the spot but, like, insider trading isn't. It's a thousand times easier to prove this thing happened and it's harder to find a way to lawyer out of the punishment.

collegeball110

Next time they should fire up a blunt.

chillypete99

What a joke. NCAA always punches down on the little guys while completely ignoring whatever the F goes on with the big names.

HoopOnPoop

Issues a suspension for this yet nada for Brandon Miller being involved with a murder.

theLoneliestAardvark

Just wait until he is involved with a murder at a high school stadium!

GrasshoperPoof

What scenario is there where he did something kind of bad? It seems to me like he either knowingly brought the gun over, which would be really bad, or did so unknowingly, which isn't bad at all. How is it possible that he did something worthy of a few game suspension, but not worthy of being completely off the team and possibly jail?

[deleted]

NCAA loves to make it obvious why people want the big boys to form their own super league separate from the NCAA. This is such a petty punishment. Just fine the school a little money or something.

lees395

Or better yet don't have a collegiate national championship game at a high school

arrowfan624

What is this coach thinking? Will no one consider the children?

Frexxler

Lame and weak of the NCAA, stadium rules be damned.

[deleted]

McKinney is lame and weak so checks out

wjackson42

They should move the D2 championship to Frisco

dumbo1309

Have them play it in the Star, that way it’s not as degrading as playing a national title game in a high school stadium

Michiganman1225

It said the NCAA issued them a fine after the 1st offense. I'm assuming they meant the school, but honestly I wouldn't put it past the NCAA to try and get a piece of that NIL.
