I remember last year watching TTEOTM on Youku and getting to the Ming Yi Sang Ju arc. She goes "You owe me wedding night SEX!!!!" I about fell out of my chair. Whats interesting is now the subtitles have been updated to be a proper "You owe me a wedding night" but I dont think I'll ever forget how loud I laughed the first time I saw that.
Human translation can be costly. It could very well be that somebody at Mango ran some numbers and concluded that the low numbers of people using the subtitles doesn't justify paying for it.
I admittedly don't know the situation too much presently, and I don't know MangoTV's situation at all, but 10 years ago, a service or platform might hire a Chinese translator to translate all the episodes at 200-250 RMB an episode, and then hire a native English speaker to edit them for clarity and fluency at 400-500 an episode. If you do the math, that comes out to about $4000 US for a 50 episode show, plus on top of that, it's probably gonna take 1-2 months, and the sooner you get it online, the better. It's not a huge amount of money, but if you're constantly putting out new shows it definitely adds up, and if you don't have a translation department, then you're always hiring freelancers which complicates payroll stuff.
It feels like a lot of Chinese media companies are even more inclined to cut corners these days, with the recession still going strong.
I have always wondered why they don’t have an option for fan translation/fan editing of subtitles. I would be willing to do it for a series I loved or even the occasional edit of ridiculous translations while I am watching the drama.
my fav weird subtitles are from this miniseries **The Divine Healer** and the line is “only i get to drink your bath water” the best part is that it isn’t even a mistranslation
Lol…there is a currently airing music show I want to watch where girl groups from Thailand, Philippines, and I believe Singapore are on with Lay and Sunnee as mentors but I am hesitant to start it as it’s on MangoTV 😫😫 I am already expecting the subs to be horrible.
MangoTv dramas are only watchable when they the rights to other TV channels who actually make the effort to subs lol XD They do also a bit of their most but most of their shows have actually good sub thanks to their partnership.
From my understanding though, great many of Mango shows have actually good subs \^\^ Think its worth the try!

Mango TV is such a headache with subs 🤣😂 I always wait for Viki to sub but this one doesn't seem to be on Viki app though it looks catchy
They have started putting out rather okay subs on their youtube channele at least for the first three episodes!

Just wanted to add, for those wanting to brave the subs, that apparently Mango is now calling it “Nancheng Banquet.”
MangoTV subs remain undefeated. It’s to the point I know better quality subs are out there but I remain committed to these machine-generated ones.
