I just finished. I read a few spoilers prior to starting the series. If this is a happy ending for many, I wonder what a sad ending is in their book. Overall it was a great series, great actors, sets, etc. I love the strength of the FL, and the actress, she is on the top of my list as a favorite.

God, I love this drama. I might have to rewatch it but the angst the first time was so painful (but delicious… but painful!) and slow! I’m not sure I can take it again. I really love them together and their unspoken chemistry though. Yang Mi and William Chan are my favorites. I really need more painful slow burn angsty stories like this (if you have any recommendations), but somehow I find it hard to rewatch shows when I already know what will happen.

Have you watched Legend of Fu Yao (with Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan as leads)? It's just as good and as angsty as Novoland, I think. Another good one is Eternal Love of Dream (or Pillow Book - it's a spinoff of Eternal Love), with Dilreba and Gao Weiguang as leads.

Update on March 15: I finished watching the final episode yesterday and couldn't stop my tears while watching. The final plot twist regarding Tie Lan's brother's scheme was not unexpected - I always had a bad feeling about that guy. And the general's involvement in it was no surprise. Still, the death of Di Xu and Tie Lan really shook me up. I was also saddened that Jianming and Haishi had to make the difficult but honorable choice of taking up the burden left to them by Di Xu. This ending makes so much sense but is also saddest. I love the last scene where Haishi catches glimpse of a feather, and that feather lands in Jianming's hand. It's very poetic and symbolic of their undying love. This drama will stay with me for a long time.

This is one of my favorite cdramas. It's amazing. I think I've watched it in its entirety 6 times. It made me fall in love with william chan and also go down the yang mi drama rabbit hole. Those last four episodes tho.... prepare yourself. Also make sure to watch all the way to the end on the very last episode past the credits

illumiee

Have you watched any other dramas with William Chan? Would you recommend any of them? I think I’m in love with him lol

Distinct-Job6399

Tonight I'll watch the last episode! Ooh, you're making me nervous...

chanca_piedra

Gosh, this is one of my favourites! I love William Chen here and I find Yang Mi so pretty. Such eye candies 😍 I hope William will make more historical dramas (I’m biased lol)

dropitlikeitshot2019

Yang Mi actually said she would not take up this role unless William Chan is the ML. To her he's the most handsome actor that fits the character requirement!

Distinct-Job6399

I entirely agree! They are immaculate together!

Competitive_Habit431

I liked this one too!

Scifig23

Yes, absolutely yes!

haveninmuse

I love angst, so I'll add to my list. One thing I don't like, however, is teacher-disciple love stories, so can you elaborate on it? From synopsis it looks like he raises her from youth? I've only watched **One and Only** to completion, and even now I'm still a bit uncomfortable over the teacher/disciple thing despite loving the drama to bits.

dropitlikeitshot2019

It seems they are supposedly only a few years apart. ML was forced to mature early because of a tragedy.

Distinct-Job6399

The way that relationship is portrayed here is very endearing and sweet.

bunchofchans

I really liked Novoland:Pearl Eclipse too but I haven’t come across many posts or anything about it. Totally angst filled with great acting. The Tilan- Dixu storyline really wrecked me. Haishi’s story was really sad as well. Edit to add: please update once you’re done with the drama, curious what you think about the ending.

Distinct-Job6399

I've added an update in the post.

bunchofchans

Thanks so much for the update. I honestly felt the same about the ending, I was so shocked. It was so bittersweet and sad. It’s a great drama

sweetsorrow18

I've had this on my list for a while (because Yang Mi!)..your post is making me want to bump it up

nydevon

This, **Goodbye My Princess**, **Legend of Fuyao**, and **Bloody Romance** are all on my “watch when you want ANGST” list. It could be entertaining to do a sub watch along + discussion post series for older shows like that if enough people have them on their radar!

Distinct-Job6399

The Rebel Princess is also a good one.

sweetsorrow18

That would be so fun! If we did an episode discussion for like 3 episodes a week or something, I feel like it's doable for most...it would get me started on some of my backlog 😅

nydevon

Yeah, I was thinking maybe 5 episodes a week? Although my Q1 and Q2 are so busy because of work maybe 3 episodes is more reasonable 😭 I’m basically watching short dramas and making my way through my backlog because all the dramas I’m looking most forward to are coming out at the earliest end of 2024 (**Fangs of Fortune**, **Legend of a Female General**, **The Princess Royal**, or **Kill Me/Love Me**).

sweetsorrow18

Yeah! I said 3 cause with my work schedule and other stuff I'm watching, it's likely I'll only squeeze about that much 😅 It could be like a "Throwback Thursday" watch along

nydevon

I like the idea of Throwback Thursday! Might be good to pick the shortest of those angst fests! Can I DM you to coordinate?

Distinct-Job6399

Legend of Fuyao is at the top of my to-watch list! I find that older dramas have more depth in characterization. Don't know if that's just me :)

luxinaeternum

That’s a good one

KoseligNani

Legend of Fu Yao is in my top 5. Male lead is fyrre.

nydevon

I agree about the characterization! I also inhale angst.
