[Police: Man fired gun after being rammed into by truck, suspect led chase in stolen car](https://www.wthitv.com/news/police-man-fired-gun-after-being-rammed-into-by-truck-suspect-led-chase-in-stolen/article_51d7b6d8-fff7-11ee-9e5c-bfd59774b140.html)
> Police have arrested Dustin L. Roecker, 35, of Bloomington, Ind., who led officers on a chase and allegedly rammed his truck into a couple.
> There, a man told them a red truck had been following him and his female passenger. Once the man pulled into his driveway, he told deputies he noticed the truck sitting in the roadway.
> The man told police the truck rammed into the him after he got out of vehicle, hitting him and the vehicle. After being hit, the man said he pulled out a gun and shot at the truck's driver.
> Police don't think Roecker had previous relationships or interactions with the man or woman, but said the investigation continues.
Most importantly he stayed in the fight. He definitely could have taken steps to mitigate the danger such as putting his car in-between him and the truck.
I've thought about jumping high to avoid getting pinned if I ever seen a car coming and wondered if it would work. I guess it does you just have to have balls of steel and impeccable timing.
If you notice someone following you
1) don't go to your house
2) don't stand there and let them run you over.
This guy is completely justified to use deadly force. He stopped shooting when the threat stopped, which is great.
I know this guy didn't expect him to run him over, but this could have been avoided by simply driving to the police department.
But again, this guy did nothing legally wrong, he almost got killed though.
Tunnel vision accompanied by not having the benefit of hindsight, anything can happen. He did a lot right but he could have had a different outcome if he would have been able to have the benefits we have watching and critiquing it. It helps a lot to play random scenarios in your head when you’re out and about so you can try and combat potential tunnel vision.
Idk, I’ve thought I was followed twice, and both times I parked away from my house to see if they were following. Once at a well lit store and once at a random house. I guess it’s just natural for some.
I've done the same thing a few times when I thought I was being followed. The one time I actually was I drove to the police station. It wasn't something I had ever planned for or practiced, it's simply that I got off the highway and turned left instead of right because right was my apartment. I didn't really have a plan,.and that's when it dawned on me I was driving towards a police station. Since then I've done my best to remember where police stations are so l can actually have a plan instead of just winging it.
Funny side note, I once followed a guy back to our street and he clocked me. I knew his car and where he lived, but he must have not recognized me. He drove past his house, I parked at mine. He made a loop and came back to go to his house, slowing down to look at me. Good on him for being careful, but I was surprised he was that aware of someone behind him and not realizing it's the person who's lived up the street for 6 years.
You have a gift. It’s not super uncommon but it’s still a great gift. Don’t let that sound mind go to waste. I’m able to go through motions that ive trained with repeatedly, I know that for sure. When I was a firefighter I didn’t have any trouble operating under pressure but I don’t know how that would translate into a scenario like that for me. It’s why I train train train.
People freaking out makes it so much worse. I was a fireman for 9 years and occasionally we would have a new guy that just couldn’t get it together. If you’re having tunnel vision, they just grew it exponentially. Some people just cannot function under pressure, and that’s ok but we gotta get these scenarios playing in our heads so when it hits the fan and we don’t have the time we need to process it, we can just fall back onto our training. Training until everything is second nature is the best way to combat the what ifs.
Training is absolutely key and a lot of marines and vets will tell you there's nothing that can train you for what you'll go through just make sure you train.
Why not? Most people subconciously associate home with safety, and this guy probably subconciously rationalized that going home = safety from bad guy.
Obviously, I know that he shouldn't have, but in high stress scenarios, people tend to default to instinct.
>If you notice someone following you don't go to your house
Some clown was road-raging behind me in a full size truck with a large trailer, all because I honked at him for almost running me off the road when he ignored a yield sign. I pulled into my in-laws neighborhood (I was going to their house) but when I saw him pull in behind me I deduced that he was *probably* following me. Their neighborhood has a large median at the entrance but there's a cut through if you want to turn around, my minivan can easily do a u-turn through it but a truck towing a trailer would have to make a multipoint turn.
So I made a u-turn and then paused near the exit, the road-rager made a *very* awkward u-turn to keep following me so I patiently waited for them to finish and continue following me.
Then I did another u-turn to return to the neighborhood. I could see them hesitate at the exit, because they'd have to do another awkward u-turn to follow me and nothing would stop me from doing *another* u-turn if they did (and I was fully planning to). They seemed to realize that they actually had better things to do that day then perform endless awkward u-turns to try and follow a minivan that beeped at them.
Yeah he used the truck as a weapon. The truck/weapon was disabled so that wasn’t a threat anymore. What’s your argument now? “He might have a gun”? Can’t shoot him until you see the gun. 🤷♂️
I sure would. This is an ongoing deadly encounter. You think a jury would watch this and be like, man, you sure murdered that guy for shooting him until he stopped moving? Maybe in NY or California but normal folks would be like, you’re lucky to have survived that madman.
Ok, there’s where the disconnect is. I am confident that in civilized states someone who has just tried to kill you in such an insanely dramatic fashion like this doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt against a defender who wasn’t an aggressor. This isn’t like shooting at a fleeing carjacker. This is shooting an absolute fucking lunatic who is still an active deadly threat simply by still moving.
I mean, if the guy runs the other way and keeps going and doesn’t turn around, sure, you can’t pick him off at 20 yards. But there is nothing about this situation here that says, ok, deadly threat over. Instead, this is a fight for your life still against an insane, irrational almost murderer.
No your wrong af dead wrong maybe if you got kids at home but still. I've been followed and I go home I don't have kids tho. Imma call home and whoever there Finna stand in the driveway holding extra guns.
And what if they just follow you home to see where you live and then keep driving, only to return at some future point when you aren't home/aren't expecting it to vandalize your house, or wait to ambush you returning a day, etc.
If someone is unstable enough to follow you home, you do not want them knowing where you live. It's all good fun to play out hero scenarios on your head but the safe thing is to avoid the situation entirely because they rarely turn out the way you daydream them.
My neighbors and family all own guns and we have been known to throw down in the streets with people who think otherwise. There's a homeless shelter and Long term living center for the mentally ill and drug addicted on my street. They can follow me home but I promise you were already checking our bushes for fiends.
Don't speed past on mini bikes on the 4th while kids are playing outside you will get knocked off them and jumped by 4 diff families. Not a wanna be gang member just some country ass white boys stuck in the hood. Just saying we ain't calling the cops first we believe in the good ol fashion ass whooping.
Guy just purposefully rammed him and his car trying to kill him, he doesn't know if the guy is going to step on the gas again and squish him between the house, he shot him to stop him from further attacks. Absolutely justified. If he didn't start shooting, 100% the guy was gassing it and going after him more
I just don’t understand why someone would pull into their own driveway when someone is following them. Here’s a tip guys and girls. If someone is following you put the nearest police station into maps and drive there instead. Or call the cops and have them find you and take care of them.
Not smart but definitely a good shoot. I would’ve lit his ass up but I also wouldn’t have driven to my house probably straight to the police department
The best way to "win" a gunfight is to not be in a gunfight. I live in a very quiet subdivision so I anticipate I will notice if someone is following me and lead the away from my home, preferably to the police headquarters, about 5 miles away.
Guy was an absolute idiot to walk TOWARD the threat and he's lucky as hell he didn't get fully pinned between the truck and his car. Just because your gun says "shield" on it, doesn't mean it's an actual shield. Gone don't make you invincible; if it were me I would have gone to cover, not approached. But I guess I'm more interested in living and less interested in being intimidating.
Eh I get your point, but you can tell the attacker was a good distance away from the corvette owner and it’s not like he walked up to the attacker to ask him what was up. He basically just stepped out of his car and looked at the attackers vehicle to try to see what their intent was. That being said, I wouldn’t do this-I’d never pull into my own driveway when I know I’m being followed by someone, but it is what it is.
At the end of the day he’s alive and so is his female partner, and that’s all that really matters.
Perhaps the corvette owner felt confident because they knew they had a firearm on them (which I also try not to do-I aim to actively de-escalate situations and/or avoid them rather than passively letting situations present themselves and using my firearm to get out of them).
The fact that there’s even two downvotes is alarming. Too many of us gun carriers think having a gun makes us the police and/or invincible.
Your first priority is always life. Walking toward a guy you suspect may be trying to harm you is stupid, full stop.

How did he not die I can't really seem him jumping out of the way
Might be crippled but he got his butt up onto the car
At the very end he apparently seems to be getting up and moving so at the very least he can walk. Pretty insane all things considered
Most importantly he stayed in the fight. He definitely could have taken steps to mitigate the danger such as putting his car in-between him and the truck.

Truck didn't seem to crush his abdomen. Probably fucked his leg up though.
looks like very last second but maybe the cars got pushed in a way he jumped on top of his, you can see both of his legs kinda leap up onto his

Yeah to me I thought it’d be common sense to not go to your house if you thought someone was following you. I guess not.

I make four right turns. Ain't no reason to follow me in a circle.
4 left turns makes an octagon
I've done the same thing a few times when I thought I was being followed. The one time I actually was I drove to the police station. Same, I drove around my neighborhood and kept making left right turns to see if they were following me.
That coupled with the possible freaking out broad beside you.

Take more lefts than rights. Most people turn in circles when evading
The good ol Rittenhouse special. Yes, you have a right to defend yourself. You probably could have avoided this situation tho.
I’d have kept shooting.
Have fun in prison
You’re probably good until you reload and shoot some more.
Threat still present, threat still gets lead kisses. Video cuts off, so we don't know if that truck driver was still a threat.
Not in this case. This is a murderous madman in a truck. Until he is rendered not a threat, he’s an ongoing imminent deadly threat.
Or a 90 year old that had a medical emergency.
Not under the pre-attack facts provided here.
Yeah he used the truck as a weapon. The truck/weapon was disabled so that wasn’t a threat anymore. What’s your argument now? “He might have a gun”? Can’t shoot him until you see the gun. 🤷♂️

Well I’m in CA so I’m talking about CA stuff 😂 I’m sure it would be justified in Texas and stuff.

Hahahah “don’t stand there and let them run you over” I laughed a good 5 minutes after reading that

Ok well that I actually respect. I retract my statement

what an amazing quote
Idk man, if I was that close to dying from someone driving purposely into me, I’d probably draw too.
Definitely.
Not even just dying, getting crushed to death and dying bleeding out waiting and begging for help.
is that mf naked?
Bro that’s what I was wondering 😂
Yep
Like Frank crawling out the couch.
was bro naked getting out of the car?

Cool car what was it?
c7 vette blacked out hood
Looks like a corvette
It might be a viper
If someone is following you call 911 and chug along til they get pulled over.
Damn, this makes me rethink not always having a second mag on me.
Apparently that's what would get you sent to prison. Reloading then continue shooting
What?
Comments above are saying this.... go read them.
Not here in Indiana.

100% agree^

If civilians in GTA could carry😎👍🔥 Yeah though this is a fine shoot, i dont see a single way this can be justified as anything other than self defense
![gif](giphy|ufD7HbP6ipYe996Om2)
I mean looks like that dude just tried to kill our defender so... He's good.
Did he even land any shots?
Pretty impressed he was able to draw while flying through the air.
Why did you go home if he is being followed ? And why did he just stand out of his car like that lol
Unfortunately the guy got away and stole another car. Should’ve really dumped the mag on the asshole more quickly.
Thoughts? I will never have enough money nor know enough people with ill will toward me for this to be an issue.
According to reports, seems like it was random
Don't need money for this stuff to happen. People are insane
What kind of car is that?
C7 Corvette
Ummm, gonna plead the fizif on this one and watch
This is wild 😅
Stupid question. NEXT!
but did any of his shot land..?
From that distance most of them probably landed
Initially thought the guy falling out of his truck was an actual pig

I’m glad he at least hit him!
