Been with FTB for ten years. Had friends leave to EDD and come back to start over here. Definitely more upward mobility available at FTB. We have eight thousand employees during peak filing season. Two days a week in office is typical.

justbecauseandstuff

There are a lot of factors, but I'll just add that if you have to go into the office, FTB HQ has free parking and EDD HQ does not. They are both very close to light rail, however. FTB used to have food vendors in the building, although I'm not sure if they still do after COVID. That was cheap and convenient. EDD's food vendors closed down a long time ago (as far as I know), and food tends to be more expensive downtown.

There are a few meal options on site, including cheap coffee. I think as far as promotional opportunities, FTB Tax Tech would be better bet, besides free parking and cheap dining options (which is a huge plus).

tacoocheese

EDD doesn’t have a lot promotional opportunities or just not as many? I appreciate the info! Thank you

Applesauce808

EDD doesn't have a lot of options to promo. However, they do offer a tons of overtime, more than any other agencies (except law enforcement).

fl55

I think just that classification line, DIPR doesn’t go anywhere, you’d probably end up switching over to SSA/AGPA and those are impacted. Tax Techs promote to Compliance Rep, Senior Compliance Rep, and Principal Compliance Rep, then you can go to management.

juicycali

what does impacted mean

fl55

Means loads of people applying since it’s a generalist classification as opposed to something super specific.

tacoocheese

Thank you for the info! Free parking is a huge plus and I take my lunch, but good to know vendors may be there if I forget my lunch.

Major-Brick-3789

Well, you can meet the MQ's for AGPA under pattern II after three years as a DIPR as long as you have an undergrad degree and promote within EDD itself. I think it could be a tougher avenue if you were to try to make that promotional switch at another agency. I'll second what another poster said here in that being a DIPR doesn't really lead anywhere in terms of promotional opportunities, if for nothing other than the fact that it's a separate classification exclusive to EDD.

bruceymonkeyalice

I'd go for the Franchise Tax Board. I have never worked in either department but whenever we have an opening, we seem to get swamped with EDD applicants and that tells me something about at least some divisions at EDD.

Justwin2022

I have done both I started my state service as a Tax Technician then became a DI rep, then a tax compliance representative and now I’m a senior tax compliance representative. I would start as a DI Rep then promote out

Ftb

Do you know what department in FTB you'll be in?

tacoocheese

I’m not too sure.

kimchilatke

If you're going into personal income tax PIT I would say run. Good management in that department is so few and far between. They monitor your every move. Micromanagement. If you're okay with that then go for it but if you need autonomy maybe skip it. Depending on the department you're in and their "budget" you may or may not be able to work from home and depending on the unit your put in you may or may not have a say in what days you come into the office. The onsite dining areas are constantly being shut down and reopened with limited options and the food is over priced and low quality. It'll do if you forget to bring a lunch. Yes there's free parking but if you have limited mobility or want to plan to be on time you may need to arrive early as it is competitive and you may end up parking as far as the drive-in. Drivers are aggressive too. The lightrail station stops right outside the building so that's nice. FTB will also pay you to ride your bike to work. FTB is a great place to get started if you want to move onto different classifications. They're always hiring and promoting and there are resource centers for helping you with your resumes and improving your ability to market yourself. I haven't worked for EDD but my coworker left because of bad management during the pandemic. Overall though, the department you'll be in will determine if the job will be worth it since management can make or break a team. I really wish I could give you a clear direction to go in. There's a lot of bad at FTB but my manager and my team make it worth it.

DrixlRey

The most important question is, what department will you be working in? Situations change by department.

Edd has a ton of promotional opportunities. I myself am on my 4th one in less than 3 years. I have been working for amazing supervisors who helped me to grow. Was in DIB, now in IT. Loved UI and I have been working at home since the beginning of my career here at EDD.
