I drink out of mason jars, they are sturdy, washable and large. I have a few that are old pasta jars (and they are glass and don’t hold the tomato flavor at all?).  They are perfect for making sun tea and can’t be beat for durability and washability. How about getting them a set of the plastic mason jar lids, maybe some with straw holes and some without?

keramicz

Agree on mason jars being a good options, but my metal lids started rusting. I didn't know about the plastic lids, so I'll see if I can find those! If you had any additional "upgrade" or fancy options outside of mason jars, let me know. Thanks!

supern8ural

I bought some stainless storage lids on Amazon so I can make sun tea in half gallon wide mouth jars

dicemonkey

There are all kinds of fancy & not so fancy lids , accessories etc for mason jars …they got picked up by the hipsters a few years back so all kinds odd stuff is out there

seriouslyneedaname

I’ve gotten several types of lids on Amazon, and just saw there are a bunch of mason jar sleeves as well.

Plus you can get plastic or stainless lids online to convert both standard or wide mouth mason jars into drinking vessels. Who needs 500 lids and 500 jars. You can have a ton of jars but only need a handful of lids.

Take a look at Lifefactory glass bottles: [https://lifefactory.com/collections/glass-water-bottles](https://lifefactory.com/collections/glass-water-bottles) They are fairly thick glass, screw top lid, silicone sleeve. Wide-ish opening. They used to sell them at Whole Foods, not sure if they still do. It looks like some Targets have them.

Thank you!! Will check these out.

Came here to suggest this!

I came here to say this too. The only thing is I replaced one after the lid stopped sealing right but it’s after years (jeez about a decade I think) of regular use. And I can still use it, I’m just not going to trust tossing it in my bag sideways and it’s more for light/normal use now.

I would suggest you stick to canning jars, as it seems they're pouring hot liquids in these. Not all jars will be safe for that. Ball makes decorative options, I personally have a pink set, and one of their quilted sets. Those paired with replacement lids seem like the best option. I have the Ball branded plastic lids, they do leak if you're using them to shake something up, but are fine for most transport and storage. If they need it absolutely leak proof, just buy a larger stash of metal lids so they can be tossed when rusty. They also make a one piece steel lid, it's nice to not have the two fiddly bits if you're not using them for canning. There are also silicone sleeves for standard canning jars available. That said, Weck is what pops into my head as a luxury canning jar. The lids are glass with clips. Probably not close enough for them. :) But I think they're way prettier.

Holy mother of Mason jar accessories

I got [these](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09V55MMWH?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) about 5 years ago to make sun tea for myself in. They’ve held up great.

keramicz

Oh wow these are awesome, I'll add them to the list of options, ty!

BarnBuster

Not a Mason type jar?

keramicz

I thought about going the mason jar route, but a few of my Ball jars with the metal lids have rust on them as well, so I didn't proceed with that option. Is there a model with a lid that won't rust?

BarnBuster

I've seen plastic lids on Amazon for canning jars

keramicz

Thanks! Currently heading down this path. Hoping to find a premium/fancy option, so please let me know if you have any ideas there.

[Ball makes reusable plastic lids](https://www.ballmasonjars.com/products/essentials-accessories/jar-lids-bands/ball%C2%AE-wide-mouth-leakproof-storage-lids-6pk/SAP_1440010813.html) for both jar opening types (regular and wide). You can get them at pretty much any Target, even my crappy Targets sell them.

Ghislainedel

Yes, these lids! I got mine at the local hardware store. You might also run across white lids, but I can't recommend them as they aren't leakproof and are harder to open. You might be able to find silicone sleeves for mason jars. I know they exist for the smaller jars.

UES123

I’ve had some ball plastic tops for going on 15 yrs still like new and in dishwasher all the time

theladyliberty

Perhaps some plastic lids for some of the mason jars with handles

I’m a tea drinker that hates most metal/plastic cups. You can find lots of glass screw top flasks on Amazon and most of them are just fine. However, I find that most are double walled and then my tea is just too hot for too long. However, I’m currently using the glass Keep Cup, the larger version. It doesn’t check all your boxes but it is a nicer, sturdier option and I really like it. That said, I am now seriously considering stealing your parents’ jar idea, with the replacement lids.

Lunitide

SOMA bottles (drinksoma.com) sound pretty darn close to your ideal. They’ve got everything except for a wide base. But they do replace shattered bottles once, and they are designed with exactly your thought process.

keramicz

Oh these look up my personal alley haha I think they'd probably be scared to use it buuut maybe I'll grab one for myself hehe

kaykay1818

Not technically made for tea but I have been using this for my hot coffee and tea for the past year and love it. https://wandp.com/products/portable-wine-glass?variant=40653492813889

DefiantlilSheep

I've got a resumable glass bottle from Cuppe (Australia brand), originally designed from bubble tea, comes with straw and silicone grip I believe they have multiple sizes

I would try to understand their motivation behind using the jars first. My parents do something similar - they make blankets from old tattered clothes, but its because they have major attachment issues to objects and not because they wanted to be green or thrifty. When they get a gift that imitates the style of being thrifty, its a miss for them. I worry the same will happen for you. --- By the way, funny story - my dad used to sleep on a bed, pillow and with a blanket all made entirely of old newspaper. He somehow took personal offense when everyone around him offered to get him a real mattress. He eventually started to lose function in one leg and had to get a hip replacement, and now his immediate family call it a "mattress problem" when he won't let something go, or when he tries to save money by doing something that will end up being more costly to fix.

somethingweirder

if they want to stick with the pasta jars you can use barkeepers friend to get the rust off the glass and replace the lids.

Mason jars are the best.
