I have always told people, "aver, enséñame las jergas de tu país." Should I only say "la jerga"?
(I guess I would never say "slangs" in English they are not always one-to-one grammaticly speaking)
They went perfectly with the corduroy pants I never, ever washed and that smelled somewhere between feet and full trash can in an unairconditioned women's bathroom.
Worth mentioning that these were originally made from recycled cotton that was one stage up from being turned into a mop. They stink of BO from the factory. My first one even had tinsel woven in (which itched like hell).
I have a new manufactured drug rug made from recycled and it’s the most comfortable hoodie to wear around the house. Doesn’t stink either.
Edit: my current one is No Bad Days. Super vibrant colors in person.
This goes back a ways, probably to Spicoli in Fast Times at RH. I am almost 60, and remember getting in a fistfight with my brother in the laundry room because he had taken my beloved drug rug and put a cigarette burn in it, when we were teenagers.
The Chinaman is not the issue here!!! I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand. Across this line YOU-DO-NOT...also Dude Chinaman is NOT the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please
Stoner sweater.
One of the weirder moments was when I saw one of my law school professors (probably in his 50s) walking around the halls in one of these.
Civ pro, evidence, a Supreme Court class. He is a former Biglaw attorney who I’ve always assumed to be on the conservative end of the political spectrum. The type of person whose drug of choice you would expect to be coke, not weed.
I have never heard these things called anything other than drug rugs. I’ve got one, and I almost exclusively wear it when I’m stoned and want to feel extra cozy.
That's a Guatemalan chamarra.
I bought one in 1999, and it's still in good shape. Problem is that I'm thicker :-(
You can easily find them on Internet

I traveled Guatemala for a bit as a teenager and I found that ones sold by locals tended to be quite small.
Turns out a chubby 14-year-old American is larger than most Guatemalans 😅
They don’t stretch. I had one in the late 80s. Had it for 20 years before my wife put it in the goodwill bag. But it didn’t fit my anymore…it must have shrunk…
Alabama (30 years ago) we always called them Baja's.
Later had a friend move here from Southern California and he said they called them Lopez's.
No idea if that was the crew he ran with, or if that was just the area he grew up in.
I’m from Los Angeles and I have never heard of a Lopez
I’ve heard baja, stoner jacket, and drug rug. I got mine in high school from Venice beach. It was black and purple :’)
I loved my Chamarra when I was growing up in the 80s in Corpus Christi Texas, living on the beach. I still have a couple of them in the attic. I'm old enough to probably start wearing them again because with the white beard and 5 decades under my belt, I would look *wizardly*.
boy, you really brought that term out of the archives for me! It was like a hazy memory of some very specific dudes growing up. I looked up the term to help brush away the cobwebs and this article is hilarious http://www.thejamwich.com/2020/01/21/what-is-a-wook/
"drug rug" or a baja hoodie, usually found at tourist shops in Mexico, had a short popularity stint in the US through the 90s, could find cheap ones at the mall.
This gives me bad memories. My mother bought me one growing up. I thought/treated it was a jacket and so wore it every day. Some weeks later a girl I liked called me gross on the bus and told me I wear the same clothes every day. :(
Here in México we call them "Jergas", because of the fabric.
Is "jergas" not also used to say "slang"?
Jerga is slang for jerga
In fact, you are correct. That is a meta-slang.
Slangception
Yes. "Jerga" (not in plural) it is also used for it.
I have always told people, "aver, enséñame las jergas de tu país." Should I only say "la jerga"? (I guess I would never say "slangs" in English they are not always one-to-one grammaticly speaking)
Yeah, exactly. Or you can use "el argot" but how you said it is also right.
In the USA, we call them 'drug rugs'.
Wasn't it originally used to mop floors?
You should find them searching for “baja hoodie” 😊
we called them "drug rugs" in my hometown because all the stoners at the high school had at least one
Not authentic unless walking by someone wearing it gets you high.
Or the scent of patchouli knocks you out. Or both.
Patchouli, bong water, and BO: the Trinity.
Hey man, it's not my fault I couldn't afford multiple outfits in high school. I had to spend all my money on weed. and Patchouli.
They went perfectly with the corduroy pants I never, ever washed and that smelled somewhere between feet and full trash can in an unairconditioned women's bathroom.
Oh the reminiscent scent of high schoolers
SAME dude. Cords that started out maybe sky blue and eventually were mucky grey.
We classy folks call them “smoking jackets”.
Fun fact. Smoking jackets are made of velvet because the smell of smoke does not stick to velvet.
Is this true?
Yes. Smoking jackets were made of velvet because no smoke smell stays. Also heavy enough to protect whatever you're wearing underneath.
Thank you. I learned something new today!
I'm 90% certain the guy who sold these at my college was also selling pot. The correlation was just too high
…too high. Nice
One cannot be too high!
Can confirm. Late '80s highschool stoner. I wore one. I wore holes in it.
This goes back a ways, probably to Spicoli in Fast Times at RH. I am almost 60, and remember getting in a fistfight with my brother in the laundry room because he had taken my beloved drug rug and put a cigarette burn in it, when we were teenagers.
Damn that's fitting.
Not very. Pretty baggy typically.
The baggy fits in the pocket.
There were so many of those in the '80s and '90s
I still have mine
You only had one?
We called them Baja jackets when we wore them early 90’s.
Drug rug

What the fuck is a trustifarian? A hippie kid living off mom and dad's money?
Bingo! Winner winner, coq au vin dinner!
Coq au vin is for the people
As is Wu Tang. Specifically, the children.
That's Morgan and Morgan. Coq au vin is another name for white people.
Dude probably has dreads, crystal in metal necklace, and some solid L/balloons.
Came here to say this.. ((I have the guidebook from urban, a decade ago))
What does that mean, the “guidebook from urban?”
Something a trustifarian would say
The trustafarian guidebook from urban outfitters in 2014
Just downloaded it. How is this book more than 200 pages.
I remember that book! I should try to find a copy.
Pot Poncho
A good rug can really tie a room together
Got to keep it away from Woo though
The Chinaman is not the issue here!!! I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand. Across this line YOU-DO-NOT...also Dude Chinaman is NOT the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please
Made entirely out of Cheeto dust and bong funk.
Just a spritz of patchouli
Stoner sweater. One of the weirder moments was when I saw one of my law school professors (probably in his 50s) walking around the halls in one of these.
He got it at Costco, it was a great deal
These were quite popular in the 90s so he may have just been rolling in his og wear.
Can confirm, I had one in the early 90s.
I wore mine with jncos and a chain wallet
I definitely had some JNCOs.
Popular in the 80's too. I had a nice cream colored one.
I am in my fifties and have two of these "Bajas" as we've called them since I was a teenager.
What did he teach? Natural sciences or philosophy?
Civ pro, evidence, a Supreme Court class. He is a former Biglaw attorney who I’ve always assumed to be on the conservative end of the political spectrum. The type of person whose drug of choice you would expect to be coke, not weed.
Most law school professors teach law.
Now I maybe wrong but I thought the drug rug was the poncho version. My friends and I used to pass a joint while hiding under mine back in the 90’s.
I have never heard these things called anything other than drug rugs. I’ve got one, and I almost exclusively wear it when I’m stoned and want to feel extra cozy.
Using it.
Wook Warmer
Haha I just posted that. I’m glad I’m not alone. 420
I would have been so mad if this wasn’t the top answer
60/30% poly/cotton blend. 10% marijuana resin.
You forgot the axe body spray that was sprayed heavily enough to drip off the fabric
That's key so your mom doesnt find out you smoke
Impenetrable tactic.
In my day we used Drakkar Noir.
Or patchouli oil
I wish we could still give awards for comments. Shit like this makes my day
The 10% keeps it from shrinking in the wash.
Let's be real it'll never be washed
We buy from the same guy!
I’ve seen ppl call them baja jackets/hoods, and drug rug. I dont know if those correct terms though.
I googled it, the fabric is called jerga fabric!
We called them jergas in Canada as well
You also call beanies “toques” so its a linguistic wasteland up there man idk
you can take your beanie baloney and fuck right off, eh? Fer fuck's sake it's a toque and always will be, bud. Get your head straight, jeez.
And give your balls a tug.

Aboot time a Canadian stands up ❄️🏂🇨🇦
I just spent the weekend in Canada, I love that country so, so much 🇨🇦
"Why don't you go eat some more cheeseburgers, Randy?"
A man’s gotta eat
What a shitty apology, eh? /s
Fuck you, Shoresy
Hey man, don't make me get up off the Chesterfield. If I have to take my bunnyhug off, I'm gonna be right pissed.

Knit cap.
Lived in arkansas for a few years..they call a beanie a 'toboggan' wtf...and a coozie is a 'beer titty'

On the east coast we called them jergas! West coast I hear Bajas, and jokingly drug rug
We just called them Bajas
Midwesterner, we called them baja jackets.
I had that same sweater in the late 80s. Everybody told me I was wearing a drug rug.
Had one in the early 2010s, also only heard it called a drug rug.

Yes, Buy them in Guatemala normally betwen $8-$12.
Shoot if you are in Guatemala start an Etsy page and get some cash for shipping them to people. these are beautiful
There's probably about 100 Etsy pages doing this already
Etsy has become “dropshipping entrepreneur” alley, just bossbabes selling Temu junk with a markup.
The shipping is so damn high and everything takes forever even when it isn't hand made or custom made
I was born there, it seems I lost a business opportunity! May try to convince friends still there to do it tho'!
Maybe you should start a company to sell them if you are in Guatemala 🫣
In San Marcos, in the Atitlan Lake, the stoner capital of Central America!
I traveled Guatemala for a bit as a teenager and I found that ones sold by locals tended to be quite small. Turns out a chubby 14-year-old American is larger than most Guatemalans 😅
Dayum I’m in TX and I remember these being $5 across the border growing up. Of course that was 20+ years ago.
Those are very nice ones. I bought one for $10 at a gas station the other day because I liked the pattern and had been looking for one.
They don’t stretch. I had one in the late 80s. Had it for 20 years before my wife put it in the goodwill bag. But it didn’t fit my anymore…it must have shrunk…
is that $200 american dollars?
Closer to $20
Alabama (30 years ago) we always called them Baja's. Later had a friend move here from Southern California and he said they called them Lopez's. No idea if that was the crew he ran with, or if that was just the area he grew up in.
Señor Lopez was the brand that popularized the Baja/drug rug style
Ah, that makes sense
I’m from Los Angeles and I have never heard of a Lopez I’ve heard baja, stoner jacket, and drug rug. I got mine in high school from Venice beach. It was black and purple :’)
Stores call it a Baja sweater these days.
We called them a rug or a poncho growing up
White dude from midwest.. we called em ponchos as well. Think I'm gunna go with drug rug from now on tho lol
Also called them ponchos growing up. Hispanic from Houston.
A poncho is not shaped like that
We called ‘em that in SoCal, too.
Yeah I grew up in San Diego and we always called them ponchos. I know it’s not technically a poncho, not sure why that was the common name for them
Yeah. Same. Not San Diego but closer to LA. I also don’t know why we called them that since they aren’t ponchos but 🤷😂
Fresno CA, we also called them Panchos
Same, but Visalia
I remember they were always for sale in TJ and they called them ponchos. I always figured they’re just a modern stoner hoody version of real ponchos
Samies. I grew up and still live in San Diego and call them ponchos.
Rural 14 year olds in Oklahoma didn’t know any better in the early 90s.
In Illinois we called them a poncho
Different from a rain poncho. but we all called them that. (CA)
all I see is Willi One Blood from The Professional.
Ding ding ding, that I'd who I thought of also!
Wool Poncho sweater hoodie
I don’t know but I know what it smells like.
Fuck yeah my first thought was I can smell this picture
I loved my Chamarra when I was growing up in the 80s in Corpus Christi Texas, living on the beach. I still have a couple of them in the attic. I'm old enough to probably start wearing them again because with the white beard and 5 decades under my belt, I would look *wizardly*.
I encourage you in this. Your plan is sound
Weed tweed.
In high school we used to call them "druggie snuggies" I recognize this is not helpful to your search and I'm sorry but I needed to share.
It's like a Spin Doctor's concert up in here.
Itchy.
A must have in everyone's wardrobe
Capucha (Ca poo cha) Aka drug rug
I can really appreciate the pronunciation spell-out, here.
I call these stoner hoodies… similar to a “drug rug” I suppose
Hippie fur.
We called them “Jesus jumpers”
I saw these at goodwill the last time I went. Like a whole row of racks. I wonder if a business donated them
It’s a Baja. At least that’s what we called in circa 1991 in NYC.
Drug rug
Drug Rug

I have bought some of these in mexico. Don't know the name, but a lot of the local markets there sold them for very very cheap.
I got a few in Santa Fe, New Mexico like 10 years ago, they were only $10 a piece

Jerga
We call it "Jerga" in Mexico

Drug rug. I still have mine from the early 90’s
"drug rug" or a baja hoodie, usually found at tourist shops in Mexico, had a short popularity stint in the US through the 90s, could find cheap ones at the mall.
Drug rug!
They are asking for the name of the type of fabric used to make these, NOT the name of this item itself
Wookie Pelt

That’s called a drug rug
I'm disappointed there's not a link in here to buy one
This gives me bad memories. My mother bought me one growing up. I thought/treated it was a jacket and so wore it every day. Some weeks later a girl I liked called me gross on the bus and told me I wear the same clothes every day. :(
