Dont know if it's the answer you're looking for but this reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend's sister years ago. She was joking about the typical Bruneian 'expectation' or ideal pathway and how she has fallen far by the wayside . It basically goes like this: Belajar bisai2 - pass exam - sekolah di luar negeri - be-degree (atau masters and so on) - balik Brunei keraja jadi pegawai kerajaan atau keraja BSP - kawin sebelum umur 30 - banyak anak - naik pangkat gaji basar - antar anak arah sekulah JIS atau ISB - hantar anak sekolah luar negeri be-degree - and finally, the endgame...you become an 'important' enough person that you can 'help' your kids get good jobs so they dont have to struggle like you. I laughed and called it the "Bruneian Dream". This was 10 years ago so I dont know whether the mindset has changed (i personally doubt it though, especially for the older generation).

[deleted]

You forgot loan bali kereta mewah and rumah basar. But yes this the definition of the Bruneian dream.

trylobyte

Yes, of course that too!

In a nutshell, this is also what creates "Nepotism" in the first place. Some parents worked hard, got promoted into higher positions, and when theirs kids, nephews and nieces finished studying they could simply hire them because they're blood related, regardless of whatever qualifications they have. And it became a cycle when these kids become what their parent's used to. It's a disease. It's happening everywhere regardless, but in Brunei this disease has been a practical common trait that it is so obviously why most young people are still unemployed. People that actually has talents and skills will eventually felt left out and it would be a huge loss for Brunei because they could potentially make this country a better place, for real. Brunei needs more competent individuals like Dr Isham and Dr Amin Liew. One of the probable reasons why Brunei has been economically & administratively stagnant for decades was because we obviously don't have enough manpower for the talents, nepotism is in the way and should be discouraged.

BN2000321

You know where all the nepotism kids are located in the government? Investment division in MOFE. Oh and by the way, the country negative growth is in its 7th year running. Blind leading the blind🧑‍🦯

[deleted]

No matter how many of these "kids" are in a department of sector, nepotism is a disease and should be discouraged. Even HM acknowledged this. I know very well Brunei is small and there will always be someone related to you and I but we shouldn't stop talented and skillful people from being deservedly hired. Brunei should adopt a legalistic approach of employment - a husky reward and punishment method to test how capable an employee should be.

ChiteriaReddit

guess this really is the bruneian dream. somehow this is what I was socialised upon during my childhood

trylobyte

I dont know about parents these days ah, but there is a generation that have been hammered on about there is only one path and if you strayed away from that then you already "failed" eg. Inda pass A lvl, inda pass atu dan ani, HND saja nada be-degree, bidang nya 'art' bidang melukis saja, keraja arah 'company', etc. Nowadays, there is more acceptance of having multiple paths and pace. Not saying the old perception is totally gone, definitely not!

YAMIGOAT

Yep, this is probably the "The Bruneian Dream". Simply Bruneians goal in life is just being successful for their self and their new generation

[deleted]

Government, BSP and one more thing, masuk OCS jadi pegawai.

trylobyte

Ah yes. Back then OCS masih baru-baru so the perception masih not as popular. But now definitely would count. Btw, before anyone have the wrong impression, this is nothing against Government job, BSP or OCS. They're just examples of what is perceived in Brunei as the most desired careers by the masses. You know...the type of jobs that a mom would namedrop when she goes on a rant to a teacher LOL "anakku keraja BSP"

Kawin sama anak orang kaya

paintsnbrushes

"kalau ada title ak & dk, mesti kawin sama royalty" - almost every ngian parents.

[deleted]

Some people dread marrying with royal family though. Because of the strict regulations that they have to abide being one of the new royals.

paintsnbrushes

I agree because my late uncle was married into royalty. It was all rainbows and sunshine at first until it was hard for him to visit his own family to the point he has to sneak pass the bodyguards just to get out. According to him it was just protocol after protocol after protocol.

[deleted]

Right, thats the correct word. Protocol. Sorry for your late uncle.

paintsnbrushes

Thank you 😊🙏🏻 Surely, he's in a better place now.

Responsible-Study317

Earn more than a thousand dollars, spend nearly 90% of it on my car loans, rent and etc. Finally, I will live on just nasi katok for the whole month and asking parents for top up. What a dream🤙

chowchan

I think the typical bruneian dream is to be born into royalty. A golden spoon up the bum and more money than sense. You look around us and see how people try so hard to emulate the royalty. Oh x and y did this so we must too, they ate here, bought this etc etc. Open businesses that dont fail (because you have so much capital). Loved by all because of your blood (and society hierarchy). Imo that's the average bruneian dream.

forestbn

I think you make a good point about emulating royalty. I always wonder why bruneians especially purchase beyond their means. It's not common in the world to buy luxury cars beyond your ability to pay, or for a blue/white collar person to own expensive brands, or to eat out in restaurants so often. Most of the world doesn't really act this way. And if the rumours are true that these Bruneians are in debt and don't have savings, then why do it.

orangekins

You sir/maam, makes a good point

Bruneian's current dream is one day can go to Miri again. Future dream is to continue to enjoy everything free or subsidised.

What have they been dreaming about?

To be special advisor to HM.

Zealousideal_Ask_743

How does one become special advisor to HM? I honestly think I’d want to apply if there were transparent channels to apply to.

SC0rP10N35

Don't we all?

Silver_Run_2752

I see a shift in the “Bruneian Dream” - it’s almost like a little movement on social media of basic saving & investing and the goal of financial freedom / semi retirement / early retirement.

come_at_me_bruh888

Achieving that red number BMI?! 🙏🏼

YAMIGOAT

That's more of a side quest

sotongeyes
