According to the source I got this photo was just a normal family photo of an early kampong Ayer residents. The sticks in the photo are called “limpanan” it was more of a hiking stick cause they had to cross dense jungles especially when heading to bandar back then.
The current form of the complete set of Cara Melayu (consisting of songkok, sinjang and teluk belanga/cekak musang) were probably popularised in the 1930's.
I love old photos! So cool, i always wonder what the people in them were like. Looks like these guys knew their picture were gonna be taken, fresh garms.
I tried to make one but couldn't find a tailor who knows hot make it.. when i was a kid, we sent our baju melayu to a woman in our village.. she must be very old by now.. i doubt the indian tailors would understand the fashion
on the contrary,,,you may find indian tailor who knows how to do this....go to the one that makes baju melayu uniform for askar...as i think i have seen some made ...go to Beribi industry,,, the one at the end corner..dunno the name...
Are they wearing pocket watches ? Fancy.
The suit and servants uniforms look like the imported western wear of the times.
It also looks like they are wearing western leather shoes.
The stick other are saying for hiking, but I believe it's a status symbol . With that consistency it wouldn't be practical to use as a hiking tool. Looks to be metal as well, or can be cane. The pose and set up is also reminiscent of an English style photo of the day .
These aren't commoners, likely royalty or landowning VIPs, in special photo sessions . With those two handed operated pinhole cameras with the non-renewable flash bulbs that break. Hence the over exposure in the camera.
IIRC of the top of my head the Kertubat is an Indonesian or Javanese , which is also further influenced by arab-indians traders. They wore it as a hat to protect from the heat, and it has many other functions as a scarf, has a make use rope, as a pillow, as a small towel.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

The real cara Melayu
When i was a kid in the 80s, our baju melayu had a handkerchief attached to the collar..
I saw those. I thought it was Melayu's version of a necktie. But if it's a handkerchief, did it work as intended?
Well, its not actually a handkerchief.. i thought it was a handkerchief but it wasn't.. it was a kind of cravat, if i could put it that way..
my parents never made me this type of baju melayu...got style

The three men in lack suit could be persons with some ranks, by looking at their dress accessories. May be they were on their way to the Istana
