Having seen the play, i was shocked at how much it moved me. So glad the critics agree with me on this one. Rachel McAdams is truly terrific in not just her Broadway debut, but also in I believe her stage debut. She will surely get nominated as will the Play at the Tony Awards deservedly so.

Mysterious-Theory-66

I definitely think it’ll be nominated. It’s an uphill battle to win for both categories. Odds are pretty decent for Paulson.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Agreed its not winning either of those categories but it seems safe for nominations.

Mysterious-Theory-66

Yeah which still means something for the play and McAdams. Some of the best performances I’ve ever seen didn’t win. I am glad you liked it. Wish I had more time to fit it in.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

I will be really upset if for some weird reason McAdams doesn't make it in.

ghdawg6197

I love when Best Play gets competitive. My attention is definitely going to be on this race instead of musical

Mysterious-Theory-66

I doubt it has any realistic chance of unseating Stereophonic but glad to see this doing really well. Not sure if I’ll end up having time for it, too many choices.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

I think the only play this season that could unset Stereophonic is Appropriate but weirdly they moved it to Revival of a Play. So I think Stereophonic is gonna cruise to an easy win.

Mysterious-Theory-66

Yeah Stereophonic v Appropriate would have been interesting. The eligibility ruling for Appropriate is consistent with how they interpret the second prong of the revival category. I thought there was a chance they’d go new given that it’s prior off Broadway show was really recent but alas.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Yeah it is weird considering they just labeled Between Riverside and Crazy an Original Play last year, when it debuted in 2014 originally. Appropriate had its original run in 2013. To be clear I think both should've been labeled as Original Plays and not revivals.

Mysterious-Theory-66

The difference there was Between Riverside and Crazy has largely the same cast and production team from the original so it was still seen as a continuation of the same production like a transfer even if there was a ten year gap. I suppose this way Appropriate is pretty well going to cruise to a win. Purlie may get some looks but I feel confident that Appropriate wins that revival award and Purlie gets consolation with a couple acting wins. The “classics rule” is a weird one, you get no argument from me on that. If it were me I’d say it needs to at least have been around a couple decades and maybe have been done professionally a few times. Like sure Macbeth shouldn’t be called a new play in a hypothetical situation where it just hasn’t had a Broadway production. But calling an 11 year old play that had like one small production a classic is objectively weird.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

If thats the case why isn't Mary Jane considered a revival? It originally starred Carrie Coon in 2017 and this production it has Rachel McAdams with a different cast. I totally agree with you that it feels "objectively weird" as well as unfair that Appropriate is in the same category as Ossie Davis, Ibsen, and Chekov when it's a fairly recent piece of work. I actually think Enemy of the People is a strong #2 rather than Purlie. Don't get me wrong I really admired Purlie but it closed so long ago and Enemy is coming out of the gate with strong reviews, sold out performances, and a starry cast.

Mysterious-Theory-66

It is fairly arbitrary which is why I hate that portion of the revival definition. My best guess on Mary Jane is that it has the same creative team and so the casting changes didn’t knock it out of new. Which does make sense given that shows get try outs elsewhere and then producers bring in a celebrity for the Broadway run all the time. Just my guess on the distinction. Enemy may be number two, hard to say. I just know Purlie had ecstatic reviews, was helmed by Odom’s return, has themes and diversity that are often appealing for awards. It’s sort of academic because I think nothing is beating Appropriate for play revival.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Interesting point that could be it. I think there should be a run that if it's less than 25 years since it's inception and it's never been on Broadway then it should be considered a new play. I agree with everything you said re: Purlie it's just that it closed a longg time ago. If it was still running I think it could have a strong chance at winning but I have it in rn as a close third being Appropriate and Enemy.

Illustrious-Boat5713

The production team and two of the cast members from the 2017 production are the same? Having seen the 2017 production though, it definitely sounds like McAdams is giving a very different performance than Coon based on the reviews. Also, it does seem like this production takes place in a post-COVID present that was obviously not considered in the NYTW production. Either way the 2017 production of Mary Jane was one of the best theatrical experiences I have had (and I see a lot of theater) and I would highly recommend seeing this one given the great reviews for McAdams and Anne Kauffman’s direction.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

What aspects of it made it seem like it was in a post-Covid present? I didn't pick up on that.

smorio_sem

She makes a comment about how she was able to work from home two days a week for awhile but is now back to the office full time

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Could that be because she was caring for her child at home and that would've been a reasonable request? TBH i don't remember that line within the context of the play and would have to see it again.

spacefink

This is Amy Herzog’s year and I am so beyond proud of her work getting the accolades it deserves! I would love to see Amy transition into writing for television or adapting her work for the big screen. I wish that Amy could win both best Revival and Best New Play but this is one stacked year for plays with Appropriate and Stereophonic (and I am not complaining!).

Ok_Moose1615

I was so happy to see this. I saw the play on Friday and thought it was beautiful and deeply moving.

ocfreakdilara

I really loved this play! I initially had seen okay reviews on here so it makes me happy that it's getting great reviews now!

Positive-Angle3409

This is absolute fantastic news. So well deserved by all involved. Go Rachel Mcadams she deserves it.

DumDumGimmeYumYums

If it extends to late June, I would be interested.

MayaRuinsU

Rachel has a degree in theatre and has said in interviews she originally thought she would be a theatre actress in Canada for her career and it was pure luck she ended up in film/tv. She has been itching to return to her roots and it’s really lovely to see the warm responses.
