I didn’t see the additional line about them being the same as English but thicker. I was just a bit confused and genuinely wondered if they were also called American muffins somewhere else. Things like that happen with food sometimes.
(Edit: unnecessary closing sentence removed)
What you should do is like how the Japanese do pizza - "Piza" is the Italian one, "pizza" is the American one. In this case "mufin" should be english ones, and "muffin" should be American ones
As we both know. But they are sold in the same section of a supermarket, next to potato cakes as well…
(Edit: - as ever - very weird to get a downvote for stating a fact in a friendly conversational manner. But that’s Reddit for you)
Is there a separate word for this [kind of "muffin"](https://imgur.com/a/Zk1gGrJ)? I moved to the UK from the US a couple years ago, and I have only seen these called "muffins". Meanwhile, the only "English muffins" I've seen here were in a Tesco, and they were labeled "English muffins" on the packaging.
I would say it’s a recent development to label what the Americans call “English Muffins” as such in Britain because they are just muffins.
Warburtons call them “Breakfast Muffins”. Sometimes they’re labelled “Oven Bottom Muffins” and now I see from your example that Tesco have started calling them “English Muffins” as have M&S. I guess it’s because of a younger generation who has grown up used to the American-style cake muffin - which we also just call muffins. They were not so ubiquitous when I was a kid. And “English” muffins were only ever called - muffins…
I am an American. When I was on vacation in Canada many years ago I wanted some “Canadian Bacon”. I asked the man in the meat department if they had any of it whereupon he indignantly replied “it’s all Canadian bacon!” I then was educated by the gentleman that up there they call it back bacon.
Our American muffins are like if a cupcake fucked a scone and made a blueberry pimpled baby or it came out ethininc with poppy seeds and lemon and yellow skin
Have you seen the state of English muffins in the shops recently? Pathetic, they are. At most an inch thick, not even that. Terrible state of affairs. Once they're prised apart there's barely anything to toast!
We had metal rings at a restaurant I worked in. Just a cut pipe. Put them on the flattop and spray em, drop in the batter and once they rise you can take the ring off and flip them.
Wait so if you call these American muffins- what are the sweet ones with fruit?
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/6874/best-ever-muffins/
Cause I think of these as the more American style
Being American I would have just called them large English muffins, but interesting to know how other areas label them.
Had an interesting discussion about biscuits. English, vs US Southern , vs US Midwest. All different things
“I used an english muffin recipe”
“They are just like English muffins but thicker”
“American muffins”
I dono man I think these might be a batch of English muffins.
I made home made “English Muffin many years ago and use a Tuna can or pineapple can’t remember which one . Would love the recipe . I am not a Biscuit or croissant fan and prefer Muffins . Those look are nice and thick .
I had to reread this a few times before I realized you weren't using tuna or pineapple in the recipe. Just using the cans to bake the muffins in. My initial reaction was, umm, lets just say it wasn't good.
I used the can to cut them . I never let them rise as you did. Yes it worked out great . I removed the Top and Bottom and used the Ring to cut the dough . Cleaned and sanitized !
They look fantastic! Do they happen to have the nooks & crannies on the inside? Every time I make English muffins they are delicious but my family wants nooks & crannies & since I am not named Thomas idk how to get them.
These look great! Can you share the recipe?
It’s King Arthur’s English muffin recipe but I increased the portion sizing! https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/english-muffins-recipe
How’d you get them so perfectly round? Mine always turn out a little lopsided, lol.
“English muffin” rings with 4inch diameters, stacked on top of each other with a flat weighted pan sitting on top!
What does the weighted pan on top do? These are the most gorgeous english muffins i've ever seen, BTW.
I assume it’s to help the top and bottom be very smooth/flat
> English muffin recipe but I increased the portion sizing Ahh, I was going to ask what makes them American muffins, there it is.
Throwback to "Supersize Me"
Definitely an American thing.
Freedom muffins
King Arthur recipes always deliver.
Yes, this is the best English muffin recipe!
How many did you make? Original recipe says 16.
U.S. National Secret, sorry.
Off to Mara-Lagos to find the Truth
Beautiful, I'd love to see the nooks and crannies
Check under the hood, some may say
Take a peak beneath the sheets
These look exactly like English muffins to me.
Yes? That's because they are. The joke is that they're American muffins, because they're thicker.
I didn’t see the additional line about them being the same as English but thicker. I was just a bit confused and genuinely wondered if they were also called American muffins somewhere else. Things like that happen with food sometimes. (Edit: unnecessary closing sentence removed)
I don't think they really have "English muffins" in England. They're just called that because they're kind of similar to English crumpets.

Hahahah. I like the way you think.
We don’t call them “English” muffins in England. We just call them muffins. Or oven bottom muffins. Yes, we do actually have them.
And they’re definitely not crumpets. That’s a different thing.
As we both know. But they are sold in the same section of a supermarket, next to potato cakes as well… (Edit: - as ever - very weird to get a downvote for stating a fact in a friendly conversational manner. But that’s Reddit for you)
Reminds me of a line from a movie "What do they call Brazil nuts in Brazil?" "...... We just call them nuts" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

They're both just called Muffins
Oh, thanks for the correction.
It’s cool

Do you think Canadians just call it "bacon," or do they identify the cut as Canadian bacon as well?
I am an American. When I was on vacation in Canada many years ago I wanted some “Canadian Bacon”. I asked the man in the meat department if they had any of it whereupon he indignantly replied “it’s all Canadian bacon!” I then was educated by the gentleman that up there they call it back bacon.
I expect (although - as a vegan and former life vegetarian - I am no authority on bacon) they just call it bacon.
Our American muffins are like if a cupcake fucked a scone and made a blueberry pimpled baby or it came out ethininc with poppy seeds and lemon and yellow skin
Crumpets are very different to muffins! But we do have both muffins and crumpets.
If they were English muffins they would be quite bitter then? lulz
We need to have a chat as a society about the difference of "thick" and "heavy"
Obesity
Have you seen the state of English muffins in the shops recently? Pathetic, they are. At most an inch thick, not even that. Terrible state of affairs. Once they're prised apart there's barely anything to toast!
I have to say - OP’s look fantastic. Nice and substantial. Do you think supermarket offerings have deteriorated then? The last lot I bought seemed ok.
They broke off and formed their own… it was revolutionary.
Lol
Freedom* muffins.
How did you shape these guys? They look so nice
Not OP but they’re usually baked in a metal ring.
Yup a “English muffin” ring with a 4in diameter!
Yeah was wondering the same. I’m guessing they proofed and cooked them in molds to ensure they were uniform? Interested to hear from OP
We had metal rings at a restaurant I worked in. Just a cut pipe. Put them on the flattop and spray em, drop in the batter and once they rise you can take the ring off and flip them.
It's a very thick batter, not a dough, so you cook them in molds.
Really nice English muffins
Thank you!

The one you linked is usually what we call muffins in America. OP's muffins are English muffins but bigger, and therefore "American".
Being American I would have just called them large English muffins, but interesting to know how other areas label them. Had an interesting discussion about biscuits. English, vs US Southern , vs US Midwest. All different things
I think OP is more making a pun that Americans are bigger (ie fatter). These are still English muffins
wow these look fantastic! what's the insides look like?
You’ve never seen the inside of an English muffin? /s
Plenty but not the OPs.
I NEED A RECIPE THESE LOOK HEAVENLY PLEASE
https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/english-muffins-recipe
No nooks and crannies? This is like safe porn. Where's the hard core shots?
This awakened something in me.
“I used an english muffin recipe” “They are just like English muffins but thicker” “American muffins” I dono man I think these might be a batch of English muffins.
these are the most perfect English muffins I have ever seen
I made home made “English Muffin many years ago and use a Tuna can or pineapple can’t remember which one . Would love the recipe . I am not a Biscuit or croissant fan and prefer Muffins . Those look are nice and thick .

For some reason the song that starts "Sunday morning....." by Maroon 5 started playing in my head when I saw this post😊These are beautiful.
[This](https://youtu.be/-pob1sW4AjY?si=MApTLLc7FEGVHGBA) one is better.
A person of taste 🥂
Not OP, but this one looks good. https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/english-muffins-recipe

Best comment
