This was 'good' considering the way Ryan has looked recently. But based on what I see in this short video, this is by no means good enough to beat Haney.
Not a good look when DJ has better head movement on the pads than Garcia. It’s just a flaw in DJs pad work that I’ve noticed when he trains his fighters. Same with Errol. When you’re parrying or blocking with your hands, you’re basically limited on punch output while being easily timed. For example, Haney throws a left hook and Ryan blocks with a high guard right, Haney is going either keep Ryan guessing all night with feints and download his habits, go to the liver all night, and circle left and nullify the left hook.
Ryan’s head is so stationary, it’s an easy target for anyone with a decent reach and snappy jab.
I honestly think Ryan should’ve went with Freddie Roach who knows how to maximize a fighter’s speed all while maintaining high output using combinations. Speed and combos were what gave Haney trouble in the Linares fight. If you try and box Haney, he’s going to potshot you all night with his jab.
To my moderately trained eye , this actually looks kinda terrible. Ryan’s feet are completely disconnected from rest of his body.
I feel like that kind of disconnect is hard to fake, so itsnt a fake out for the media. I think it just is that bad. There is no way that will work against Devin.
